Its why i believe misbah should bat 3, he has a one track method (which i am not insulting by the way)
Bat at 3 He can just be the anchor of the innings, when he bats at 4 i believe Pakistan loose momentum in the middle overs which is the most important part of an innings, i recall inzie and yusuf milking middle overs for fun. Misbah biggest issue is the lack of rotation

Bat 3 skip, anchor the innings.

And Niall earns us the bronze.

Agree with this. If he plays early in the innings at least it'll preserve wickets which can be used to attack later on, at 4/5 he just kills momentum in the middle overs

Myke Bevan struck at 69 only and was one of the greatest finishers. Another ignorable thread.

Exactly, even for the anti misbah brigade if he gets out quickly at least then he can't do any more damage to the innings. I really do believe his best spot is 3, he can hold up an end. Your best batsmen bats 3, and few series ago Misbah had a purple patch i still say he is PK most consistent batsmen. i just think he needs to man up a bit.

From overs 19-35 you just need to stay in the game by keeping scoreboard ticking, biggest issue with Pakistan is we cannot hit the 1s and 2s at will. Id leave middle overs for Fawad who is the perfect number 5 and id opt to drop hafeez to bat 4 think he is pretty good when it comes to rotation and boundary hitting.... (Hafeez killer is that he cannot face high quality opposition with a new ball) privilege to share an idea with someones rather than fan boy talk !

Bevan played most of his cricket in 90's when 300 was very rare and average ODI totals were between 220 - 250. A SR of 70 was considered good in 90's. It is not the case in current scenario.

YK SR not bad at all for 76 when compared to Misbah.
Just his avg is low. Misbah avg seems to be in the top 10 of all times at that position but at a low SR penalty.

average of 58 says hi!
3 centuries says hello!
and in last he played in 90s where 300 wasnt normal and this strike rate was normal but still he had multiple batsmen in team with better strike rate to cover it!

All I see the third or fourth average at number 4 misbah . Where's the problem

All I see the 4th or 5th highest average at number 4 misbah . Where's the problem

Below is the complete list of 44 batsmen from OP.

Problems is.... (as if you did not know :) ) that at a S/R of 66.48, Misbah scores 199 runs in 50 overs!
where as old timers like Carl Hooper and Arvidna DeSilva score 257 and 247 runs in 50 overs.

.

I will take the 48 runs in every match thanks.

So basically 48 runs in 72 balls? 96 runs in 144 balls?

Works for me as long as it comes every match. But I do love strike rates stats without context, how they impact wins or losses, or how much the %age of runs make up of team total, the relative quality of the other players in the team, the average runs score by the first three wickets before the number 4 shows up.

I recon most oppositions will be happy with allowing a specific batsman to score 66 runs in 100 balls in any average ODI match. Average here will be 66 and that will be top the charts of all time.

On Topic: Why 4th spot? Is he batting at 4th spot nowadays?

He said in his recent interview he will most probably bat at number 4 in australia series. W63L35 i found another great stat for you i limited it to last 3 years and misbah strike rate drop to 62.98 from 66.48 :p wow look at that younus strike rate!

Why?

There are plenty of other batmen who average in high 40s or more..... Misbah is the only one is doing what NOBODY else is doing.

Specifically when the yearly S/R of the all teams combined has gone up from 65 to 82....in last 22 years.
Average on the other hand has only gone up from 26 to 29.... only 3 points.

Now compare that last 22 years (all team) trend to Misbah's career...... he has gone into OPPOSITE direction. His S/R from 88 ... has dropped to 74. You think, it is not a problem???

Do forget to notice...how Misbah's average increases, as his S/R drops! :)

Don't ask me..... I don't select the team.. You'd be better off asking selection committee, team management and the captain...... who select team.

May be you know why the Captain kept Fawad out of the team for this long?

No comment of the graph? :) I wasted 15 minutes for nothing! :(

:P

Nope....Fawad is a start....let's come back to him after the oz series.

Nope....Fawad is a start....let's come back to him after the oz series.

Start? He started 5 years ago... scores a brilliant 100 on debut in tests...decent ODI record but yet, captain Misbah could not convince selectors to give Fawad a chance. :basit

I wonder, how much convincing Misbah had to do .....to keep playing Asad in ODIs even when he was averaging below Afridi under Misbah.

Of course, Asad's Afridi-like average was making the average of 48 (that you love) ...look great! Wasn't it?

So, just to be clear we have moved on from the discussion on strike rates to selection fantasies?

Wow!!!! I hope, a few more heads come out of the sand.

I have no hope for some, but a lot of others are waking up!!!

Mark my words, Misbah WILL try to bat with higher S/R in this series.

Please don't blame me..... You are the one who asked me ....

Oh I don't blame you for waddling in to selection fantasies, but is that your compelling 'proof'? One player who is yet to be tested against real opposition....

Oh I don't blame you for waddling in to selection fantasies, but is that your compelling 'proof'?

Again.... you brought up the "selection fantasies" into the discussion.... when we were going along fine talking about S/R! :) No... need to get frustrated. It is just a simple debate on cricket. There is no prize for winning or punishment for losing an argument. :)

One player who is yet to be tested against real opposition....

If Misbah does not think him as a threat to his position in the team and captaincy, I am sure....Fawad will do just fine against "real" oppositions....whatever your definition of real opposition is.

But speaking of.... real oppositions;

1) vs Australia at PERTH .... .2nd highest scorer in the match.
63 runs at S/R of 90.
http://www.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine/match/406206.html

2) Vs England at Oval .... highest scorer in the match.
http://www.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine/match/426430.html

3) vs South Africa in Dubai.... highest scorer for Pakistan, 2nd highest scorer in the match.
http://www.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine/match/461568.html

India, NZ and West Indies are left... so I don't know, how real of an opposition they are, in your books.

Yousaf has mentioned this many times about misbah only for him to be insulted and being accused of bitterness when in reality he is just calling a spade a spade.

You and I are also examples of getting abuse for saying the right thing....and leaving a few people speechless :) Otherwise, why would they throw insults and abuse.

Saw it. Beautifully explains the mohali baggage misbah brings with him everytime on average

Pakistan might as well stop playing cricket if we accept the Bs propaganda by Misbah every time that i have to bat the way i do because of the early fall of wickets and that it is impossible to consolidate, score at a reasonable rate while playing risk free cricket and not losing any further wickets at the same time.

Whatever you say, a 62 strike rate is just inexcusable. That too batting at four.

ODI numbers - batting average and Strike rate do not always tell you the complete story if looked at in isloation.

Add them up and it throws some interesting results

Untitled.jpg

MoYo, Inzi, Younis, all around the same 115-116 mark. Sanga and Kallis at 119 aren't too far away either.

Who are the ones below Misbah the list? Lara, Dravid, Mahela, Chanderpaul, Fleming. Not a bad company to be in :)

Well since the average SR has increased by about 10 since the 90s and averages have also gone up due to flatter pitches, bigger bats, lower quality bowlers etc.

Players who played mostly in the 90s should get additional 15 points. SRT played till 2012 so an addition of 10 points will be sufficient. It will be great if you can do that.

^wait i noticed that the stats in the list are from 1994 and onwards. In that case every batsman who has played at least 5 years in the 90s should get an addition of 10 points. I also noticed that you have only considered SRTs career upto 2007( why is that?). If you are not going to change that then add 10 points to his stats otherwise add 5.

Again if anyone can do this it will be much appreciated.

Well, if adding Ave and S/R tells us the complete story then....... your own story is still incomplete.

Let's apply your brilliant formula on Afridi.......... whose average (23.40) plus S/R (115.69) comes out to be 139.09!!!

I'll let you figure out where Afridi will be placed in your brilliant table...... :)

Don't forget to tell us.... Who are the ones below Afridi? What type of company he is in? Bad or Good?

Have you ever watched a show called "The Desperate House Wives"? I am thinking of writing a show called "The Desperate Indian Fans"! ;-)

There's a reason why Afridi doesn't figure here. Thread is about those who have batted at 4 and scored more than 1000 runs. Read the OP once again please :)

Better title for your show would be "The Desperate Afridi Fans" who search for Afridi everywhere :P

If you have this on an excel, can you also add a product column at the end. Would be interesting to see the list sorted by product.

oooooooo....... my bad. I am sooooooooo sooooooooorry!!!!! I sincerely apologize......!!!!

I should have known that your BRILLIANT formula ONLY WORKS for #4 batsmen in ODIs .... !!!

Now it is clear.......... so I will nominate your post as POTW!!!!

Mods... I nominate above chart as POTW!!!

Not just Yusuf, Imran himself said so and i believe a couple of more big x Pak players of the past completely forgot which ones.

A strike rate below 80 in the current is pretty poor I think unless you average 45+ and are one of the most frequent century makers in ODIs.

What what what????

Going by your logic lets do it for No. 2 batsmen (i.e. the opening batsman). Guess the batsman with 3000 runs, an average of 25.12 + SR of 102.52... so adding them up is 127.5

Lets again apply same logic to a No. 7 batsman who have scored more than 1500 runs. We have a clear winner here, a bloke averaging 23 and SR of 130... That's an awsome 153... Not many No. 7's could even touch this figure...

I think you have already guessed the person, so you must also understand that adding these 2 figures up makes no sense at all...

Batting at number 4 scored a duck in last inning and today batting at same number again scored 4 runs in 12 balls so far let see if he can boost the run rate instead if destroying the platform set by Shehzad and Sarfraz

Why does he play like this always? Such an excellent platform given by the openers, yet he will just do tuk tuk. Don't hit boundaries but at least keep taking singles.

At least today Misbah fans can't give this excuse that too many wickets were down so he had to play at this strike rate.

Look what Misbah did to Afridi!!! OMG......!!! I can't believe it!!
