KARACHI: A number of areas in the city plunged into darkness after a high-tension wire reportedly tripped.

Areas including Defence, Saddar, Old City, North Karachi, Soldier Bazar, Gulistan-e-Johar, Pak Colony and others.

K-Electric has not given an official statement on the breakdown yet, while sources in the organisation said it is due to tripping of high-tension wire.

Massive power outage hits Sindh, Balochistan cities

KARACHI: Many cities in Sindh and Balochistan, including Karachi, plunged into darkness after the 500kV Extra High Tension (EHT) line in Jamshoro tripped on Friday evening.

Although the authorities were not clear about the reason behind the recent EHT tripping, a spokesperson for the K-Electric told Dawn that it could take “five to six hours” to restore electricity to Karachi.

The fault crippled the power supply system of the K-Electric, which also provides electricity to Hub in Balochistan, as well as the Hyderabad Electric Supply Company (Hesco) which provides electricity to Hyderabad, Nawabshah, Thatta, Badin, Mirpurkhas, etc.

“Right now we have information that the EHT line tripped little after 10:30pm,” said the KE spokesperson.

A Hesco source said that the teams of the National Transmission & Despatch Company (NTDC) and the power utility were busy locating the area of fault and it could take hours to fix the problem.

Almost the whole of Karachi was facing a nearly complete blackout. Other cities of the province including Hyderabad, Mirpurkhas, Tando Muhammad Khan, Badin, Thatta and some other towns were also facing a similar situation till late in the night.

The fresh power breakdown came as a grim reminder of the May 2017 episode when almost half of Sindh, including Karachi, plunged into darkness due to almost a similar fault.

“Various parts of the city are experiencing an outage due to EHT tripping,” said the KE spokesperson. He said that the fresh breakdown originated at the national grid.

A KE source said that the disruption caused tripping of its key Bin Qasim power plant as well as several grid stations causing a blackout in most of the city areas, including the so-called security red zone.

“NTDC protection and maintenance engineers have moved to the Jamshoro grid,” a Hesco official said, adding that both circuits from 500kV Jamshoro grid had tripped.

The two circuits were feeding electricity to Karachi and some other Sindh cities, he explained.

In a late-night development, a KE official claimed that the partial restoration of electricity in Karachi had begun, but it would take five to six hours to energise all the grid stations.

Apart from the recent fault, it was the second such experience for Karachiites in less than a week as only on August 11 the city had suffered a massive power breakdown due to the tripping of the same EHT lines.

It all came against the backdrop of a tug of war between the power and gas utilities — K-Electric and Sui Southern Gas Company Ltd — which had been unable to settle their differences over gas supply for power generation despite the federal government’s facilitating intervention about five months ago. It further fans fears of an impending power crisis in the country’s commercial capital.

In March 2018, the people of Karachi suffered almost a month of prolonged power outages even in those days when the mercury crossed 40 degrees Celsius due to the infighting by the two utilities. The K-Electric called the insufficient gas supply from the SSGC as the reason behind the power crisis that had made life miserable.

On the other hand, the SSGC rejected the K-Electric’s claim and called the power utility defaulter of approximately Rs80 billion and yet, the gas company had been supplying KE with good quantum of gas only in the best interest of people of Karachi. The issue was temporarily resolved after almost a month of power crisis when the then prime minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi intervened and asked the SSGC to resume supply to the K-Electric.

Electricity went at 10:30 last night. At 2 AM it returned but for only an hour.It came back at 5 AM and that is when I slept.

Heard from my folks that there was a power outage from 10 something (in the evening) until 6 am :dansih

This is unacceptable as K-Electric charge us way more, on our bills, as compared to any electricity provider in the country, and then we gotta see this!!???? :sanga

Whenever there's a power outage, they should be penalised. The same way consumers are penalised when they don't pay their bill on time :yk2

KARACHI: Power restored to most of the areas of Karachi after a night-long breakdown engulfing large swathes of the metropolis on Friday, Geo News reported.

This was the second major breakdown in the city, following the August 11 breakdown.

The power cut that hit the Dhabeji, Gharo, and Pipri power stations impacted the water supply to Karachi.

However, power did resume in the Lasbela district and Thatta and its surroundings in Sindh after a span of six hours. In Hyderabad, on the other hand, electricity resumed partially after eight hours in the dark.

While speaking to Geo News, a spokesperson for the K-Electric had said power supply had resumed in most of Karachi but a complete continuation will take "another 2-3 hours".

Rapid work was underway to resume citywide power supply, he explained, adding that electricity was back on in F.B. Area, PECHS, and Saddar and an operation to resume power in Garden East, Kharadar, and Punjab Chowrangi was ongoing.

"We're making efforts to resume complete power supply quickly," he said.

'Rollover effect on Karachi's electric supply'

Areas that experienced power outage included Defence, Saddar, North Karachi, Soldier Bazar, Gulistan-e-Jauhar, Pak Colony, PECHS, Lines Area, Mehmoodabad, Baloch Colony, and Jamshed Road, among many others.

Sources also informed Geo News that the city's Jinnah International Airport was also impacted by the suspension of electricity, with major portions of Jinnah Terminal and the rest of the airport facing pitch blackness. They added, however, that alternative power sources were being utilised for the sensitive areas.

On its official Twitter page, K-Electric, the metropolis' primary power supplier, said a "500 kV transmission line connecting KE to the National Grid has tripped".

"This has had a rollover effect on Karachi's electric supply due to which various parts of the city are experiencing an Outage. Restoration efforts are underway with some affected areas already back online.

The "power situation in the city is expected to improve significantly in the next 4 to 5 hours. We will continue to share updates," it added.

Earlier, a KE spokesperson had confirmed that the power supply to most of the megapolis was suspended due to the tripping of an extra high-tension (EHT) wire.

They had added that further details in this regard would be shared soon and requested consumers to cooperate.

78 grid stations shut down: HESCO chief

Earlier, Raham Ali Otho, the chief executive at Hyderabad Electric Supply Company (HESCO), had confirmed that various cities of Sindh were experiencing major power outage, owing to the fact that "all 78 grid stations of HESCO [were] shut down".

"There is a technical fault at 500kV station in Jamshoro," he stated, adding that there was a complete electric outage in "13 districts of Sindh", including Hyderabad, Digri, Tando Jam, Matiari, Tando Muhammad Khan, Nawabshah, Mirpur Khas, Umerkot, Sanghar, Badin, Matli, Golarchi, Talhar, Tando Bago, Nindo, Serani, and Khoski.

The National Transmission & Dispatch Company (NTDC) was working to determine the fault causing the power outage, Otho noted, adding that wind farms in Thatta and Jhimpir were also shut down.

Experts' analyses

Syed Tanzeem Hussain Naqvi, a former chairperson at the KE, said a dilapidated system was the reason behind the citywide power outage.

"The load on Karachi's power supplying system is increasing and no upgradation has been done to manage it," Naqvi explained.

There has been no renovation in the system for the past eight years, he noted.

On the other hand, experts said the NTDC system's tripping should have cause a 600MW power shortage, which was why the breakdown in majority of Karachi's areas did not make sense.

Shunt isolators in grid stations help avert tripping incidents, the experts explained, adding that they can curb tripping waves and resume power in an hour.

In the past as well, the experts added, power resumption had taken a long time as tripping crises were not averted due to the aforementioned reasons.

IK never claimed to be a miracle worker. I am giving him six months or a year to show some improvements.

:salute :salute :salute

No power from 4-10 AM yesterday besides a 20 mins appearance.

No power from 4-5.15 AM today, then again from 6.15 to 9/10 AM.

And no power now since the last 40 mins.

Alhamdulillah for K Electric, what would we ever do without this awesome company.

I was in University today when the power outage struck.

Luckily the backup generator was working so didn't suffocate in the heat.

No electricity for 11 hours today. K-Electric breaking all kinds of records :salute

The worst part was that when contacted, they repeatedly insisted it's 'maintenance' and gave no time-frame for it to be completed... At first I thought maybe it'll be done in 2... then 4... then 6... then gave up. Power was finally restored, and then there was a 'blast' and it went again for almost an hour

To top it off, today was the hottest day of the year by far. A high of 41 degrees.

Thankfully didn’t affect me. Electricity situation in general has gotten so much better in Karachi over the years. I remember a time in middle school when there was 4 hours or more of load shedding per day. Had to work my gaming etc around that. Now there is none

Several areas of Karachi faced power outages on Wednesday which were caused by the tripping of an extra high tension (EHT) transmission line in Sindh's Jamshoro district, K-Electric said.

K-Electric, the utility company responsible for electricity supply in the metropolis, initially said it had received reports of power outages from multiple areas and was "actively monitoring" the situation.

Several residents also shared messages on Twitter reporting outages in their areas.
