So where do we stand? Modi launched this a while ago and has been touring these countries nonstop from last 1 year. Has he made any significant regarding this?

Just read about Mercedes deciding to start manufacturing some SUVs in India. Any other news?

I've heard that Apple will be making next batch of iPhones in india..

I'm sure it has worked. Have to wait until 2016 to say definitely. But Modi has relaxed most of the restrictions on India's capital account. FDI is bound to go up.

FDI in Indian market will suffer once FED increases the interest rate( may be in Sept-Oct) and if by then FDI in manufacturing occurs it just might balance the Rupee considering we have been seeing negative inflation in Whole Sale Prices.
Going to be turbulent second year for BJP lets see how they manage it.

DRDO opens up missile production partnership for Indian private sector

In a bid to promote the domestic defence industry, the Defence Research and Development Organisation
(DRDO) has allowed private sector firms to both develop and produce missile systems such as vertical launched surface to air missile systems programme.

"Under the Development cum Production Partner (DCPP) programme, we have allowed the private sector to
co-develop missile systems with us and then also produce them," senior DRDO officials told ANI.

"Private sector firms have responded very enthusiastically for participation and bids have been received for the Vertically-launched Short-range Surface to Air Missile system (VL-SRSAM) project," they said.

The effort is part of initiatives to prepare the private sector industry to be able to develop complex military systems under the 'Make in India' project of the Narendra Modi government.

The all-weather air defence missile system is being developed to provide point and area defence against various aerial targets like jets, fighter aircraft, unmanned aerial vehicles.
The canister-based state of art weapon system would be able to identify, track, engage and destroy the target with a high kill probability. It has a strike range of about 40 km.

The DRDO has also helped private sector industry including Tata and Baba Kalyani industries to develop the ATAGS howitzer which is likely to be the main artillery gun for the Indian Army in the next many decades.

India spends a lot of money importing arms. Its public sector enterprises that produce weapons are quite badly run. So getting the private sector involved will likely result in an improved trade balance.

I see more "Made in China" products than "Made in India" ones these days. So many people import stuff from China and sell it in Indian markets. :inti

Yes, there is a shift to Indian Defence. Most make in India projects are related more to defence than FMCG.
If you like to, purchase stocks in Indian defence players and Indian Auto makers (hint : L&T, Adani, TATA and M&M, Reliance)

In other sectors, India will just have to produce better and faster than china. When it comes to buying in consumer goods, the end user will always choose money and not the source of material.

You are correct. Also:

1. India has the problems which democracies have, that is restless labor and division of power between the federal government and multiple states. China therefore has an advantage.

2. I has an advantage because it probably can form deeper technological alliances with the Western democracies which do not trust China.

3. The end user will choose the cheaper product, but if WTO allows then tariffs if necessary can make the domestic product competitive.
