Jaipur, Dec 7 (PTI) A Muslim labourer was hacked and burnt to death in Rajasthans Rajsamand, leading the police to today arrest the killer, seen raving against "love jihad" while torching Mohammad Afrazul in videos shared on social media.

Chief ministers Vasundhara Raje of Rajasthan and Mamata Banerjee of West Bengal closed ranks across the political divide to condemn the attack yesterday on the 48-year old worker from West Bengal.

The accused, identified as Shambu Lal Raigar, is seen in the video ranting against "love jihad", a term used by sections of Hindu activists to describe marriages between Hindu women and Muslim men, who they claim seek to propagate Islam.

Police said Raigar was arrested from Rajsamand, about five hours from the Rajasthan capital of Jaipur, today.

"He is seen shouting against love jihad in the video and why he did so is under investigation," DGP O P Galhotra said here.

He said Raigar?s minor nephew shot the video and has been detained.

His minor daughter, who Galhotra said was suffering from a mental disorder, was with Raigar when he was arrested.

In the video, which went viral today, a man in a pair of white trousers, a red shirt and white muffler is seen ranting against "love jihad". He is also seen leading Afrazul to a deserted spot and then attacking him.

The internet has been suspended in Rajsamand to stop the videos from being shared on social media sites. Sources said there were fears the clips could lead to communal tension.

Raje described the killing as deplorable and Banerjee called the assailant inhuman.

"We strongly condemn the heinous killing of a labourer from Bengal in Rajasthan. How can people be so inhuman. Sad," Banerjee tweeted.

SP Rajsamand Manoj Kumar said the accused attacked Afrazul yesterday with a sharp-edged weapon, poured kerosene over him and then torched him.

?This is among the rarest of rare cases and at the end of a trial, we will seek death for him,? the DGP said.

Afrazuls relatives, who described him as the familys sole earning member, demanded strict action against Raigar.

"We want a thorough investigation and the culprit to be punished," a relative told reporters in Malda in West Bengal.

Galhotra said primary investigations revealed Raigar was not affiliated to any organistation.

"It is being investigated why he had that kind of a mindset,? the officer said.

Chief minister Raje appreciated the action by the police and directed that the criminal be prosecuted at the earliest.

?This is a deplorable act which needs to be condemned in the strongest possible terms,? she said in a statement.

Her home minister Gulabchand Kataria, who described it as a shocking incident, told reporters in Jaipur that he had asked officers to set up a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the matter when it was was reported to him last night.

Afrazuls family said it did not know why he was killed.

"We dont know the real reason behind his killing. He was the sole bread winner of the family. We came to know that the person who killed him had called him on the pretext of giving him work," a relative said.

Afrazul had been living and working in Rajasthan for several years.

The killing drew the ire of human right groups which demanded the resignation of Raje and and Kataria, accusing them of protecting those behind targeted attacks on Muslims.

?Although the police have arrested the murderer ... it is important to reach the people who motivated him to carry out this murder,? the statement by bodies such as the Peoples? Union for Civil Liberties, National Federation of Indian Women, All India Democratic Women?s Association and Mazdoor Kisan Shakti Sangathan said.

The statement said this was the fourth such killing in the last nine months, referring to the lynching of Pehlu Khan and Zafar Khan and the killing of Umar Mohammad by alleged cow vigilantes in Alwar. PTI SDA PNT BDS

After Labourer’s Lynching, Shock and Anger in Bengal’s Kaliachak

The village of Saiyadpur in the Kaliachak sub-division of the Malda district of West Bengal has been in shock since the evening of 6 December 2017. The news, of course, still hasn’t been completely absorbed by Gulbahar Bibi and her three daughters. Around 3pm on Wednesday, she was informed over the phone of her husband, Mohammed Afrazul Khan’s horrific killing.

Afrazul, a 55-year-old daily wage labourer in the Rajsamand district of Rajasthan was brutally beaten up with agricultural tools and then set on fire by a man who has been identified as Sambhulal Raigar. He was seen saying any one who commit “jihad” will be met with the same fate in a gruesome video of the lynching that went viral.

Village, Family in Shock; Police on Alert

A visibly shaken Gulbahar Bibi is unable to talk because of the shock, but informs The Quint that she last spoke to her husband on Sunday, 2 December. She lives with her three daughters Jyotsna, Regina and Habiba. The first two are married, while Habiba is now is class 9. Regina was the last person in the family to speak to her father on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the Kaliachak police station, which was burnt down in 2016 in an alleged incident of communal violence remains of high alert lest the issue takes a violent turn in the area. There have been no violent incidents reported so far, say the police.

Victim's Family Refutes Claim of an Affair

According to some reports Afrazul was said to be having an extra-marital affair in Rajasthan, but his family has refuted all such allegations.

A distraught Regina also said that the family demands a death sentence for the perpetrator. “We are making a demand to the government. If they do not give this the strictest punishment then they will be responsible for my father’s death,” she said. She also said that Afrazul was the family’s only male member and now her sisters and mother have been rendered support-less.

I feel sorry for the victim and the perpetrator's family. The man was totally insane. How could one human do that to another human being and that to infront of young children.

sickness comes in many shapes.

It comes in the form of language in this case. Love jihad was a term coined in the UK, but using such phrases in the UK is just a form of trolling. In third world countries which don't understand this, it can become like a match being thrown on naked gasoline.

Social media is to be blamed for this. With fake news being circulated widely, it has become quite easy to brainwash gullible people who would take every news at its face value and wont bother to check the authenticity of the news.

If strong action is not taken ( I doubt ) this is a fire which will engulf all of us. Just look at the temerity of the animal who recorded a video and uploaded it. Showing the middle finger to all of us. I know hindus kill hindus, muslims kill muslims, and they also kill each other. But this is something else. This is ISIS level terrorism, which has to be uprooted now. I am no longer going to use the term love jihad ever again.

Inna lillahi wa inna ilaihi rajioon..

That victim's cry is resonating in my ear......

How can people be this cruel?:(

We have already set a precedent by not taking strong action against the perpetrators of beef related killings. Perhaps these two thought that they could also get away with it.

I can see how this might have unfolded.

Hindu man invites this gullible Muslim laborer for work. The Muslim man works his buttt off and asks for payment. Hindu man starts abusing him and words will be exchanged.

Now the Hindu man who is a local might have thought he could getaway with murder here as the Muslim man is a Bengali and a non local. Take the love jihad rant and burn him alive.

Lock that sucker and hang him publicly. Nobody should even think of doing to the other person ever.

That Muslim man is a 55 yr old . What has he even got to do with love jihad?

My guess is that the motive is to avoid payment for the work. Thanks to his nephew who was shooting the video and posted it on social media.

Why this communal killings are happening repeatedly in Rajasthan? Who is poisoning these people's mind?

Right question should be why have communal killings started in Rajasthan, when it is ranked quite low in communally sensitive states. Kerala has the highest rate ( the last time I checked),

I don't want to rate any killing here. I am just asking why such things are now repeatedly happening in Rajasthan. Who is making these people sic now?

Never asked you to rate killings. Probably Rajasthan has also got the disease that is brewing in states like kerala, west bengal and karnataka. You asked who is poisoning the minds? We breathe this poison everyday. If you feel outrage and sorrow based on the identity of the victim your mind is already poisoned. This poison is here to stay.

I feel outraged that the people like you think that muslims like me always feels outraged and sorrow when only their people are killed. Be a human first, have some empathy for other humans and think beyond the religion fgs.

I said we breathe this poison daily. If you feel you don't have a poisoned mind, that is good. But a lot of us side with victims based on their identities. I am answering to your question about poisoned minds, don't know why you didn't like it.

Looks like British's half done job will be completed if Modi retains power for one more term.

Whatever happened was very unfortunate, that man should be punished, but we have to wait for the other half of the story as well, I condemned this brutal killing, but to say that a 55 year old man can't have affair, well heard plenty of stories of guy's as old as 70 getting involved in loads of things, let's just wait for the investigation to go through and then do the judgment.

Don't worry! Indian Muslim's are treated like king's and queen's in India as they keep telling us not that if it makes any difference to Pakistan/is. Meanwhile. the construction of Ram temple and "Padmavati" thing is causing further tension amongst the two communities.

These Rajasthanis take their valour and warrior status really seriously. Mostly because the rest of the country somehow believes this myth and hypes them on. The reality is, history shows they did a poor job of "protecting" the rest of the region from "invaders." Their history is rife with deceit and treachery among families rather than honour which seems reserved for showboat events, occasions and traditions that continually perpetuate the myth.

Excuse my arrogance but I believe a motive for murder, is established as the main course of an investigation when the murderer is not known.

In case you missed the entire plot, THE ACCUSED TAPED HIMSELF IN FRONT OF THE FREAKING CAMERA!!

This is not rocket science mate.......

Watch the video.

It's chilling.

There is no other side to the story.

This guy needs to be hanged. Anything less is injustice. In fact, the fact he is gonna be hanged is itself injustice cos the death won't be as painful as the one he inflicted on a hapless man.

Looks like British's half done job will be completed if Modi retains power for one more term.

It's a shame that someone like Modi has become India's PM (not saying this because of this incident). Hopefully one day, the world will see the truth.

It's sad that India needs BJP to come to power every now and then to teach Congress a lesson.

Rajasthan Hate Murder Victim Told Wife To Wait. By Next Call, He Was Dead

MALDA: The wail of the women at Mohammad Afrajul's village in West Bengal's Malda seemed drowned out by the memory of the piteous bleating of the 50-year-old road construction labour who was hacked to death and then burnt on video in Rajasthan.

Saiydpur village in Kaliachak, 25 km from Malda town, is dumbstruck by the horror of it all.

Like thousands of men from Malda district in West Bengal, Afrajul had made good in Rajasthan over the last 20 years or so, working at road repair and construction sites. He sent back money to his family regularly and came home for every festival.

Yesterday, he had called his wife in the afternoon and told her to go to the bank and wait. "I am transferring 50,000 rupees," he told her, saying she must confirm the money was indeed transferred. Wife Gurfar Bibi dutifully went and waited and waited. When no money came, she called, somewhat impatiently. And was told Afrajul was dead and how. She is barely coherent now.

The three daughters - Jasmeera, Regina and 16-year-old Habiba - are completely disbelieving of the love jihad charge that has cost Afrajul his life.

"We demand justice from the government, we want the government to punish the man who killed my father. We want that man to be hanged. If the government fails to do it, the blame will be on them forever," said Regina Khatoon.

Regina's husband works in Rajasthan at the same place as her father. So does her uncle, her father's brother.

"They have lied, that he was involved with some woman. Those are false claims. My husband was there, wouldn't he have come and told me? My uncle was there, wouldn't he have come and told my mother that your husband is doing all these things? Never have they said any such thing," she said.

The killer has been identified as Shambhu Lal
In a stomach-turning video that is viral, a man named Shambhu Lal in Rajasthan hacked Mohammad Afrajul to death and burnt the body while keeping up an inflammatory communal rant against "love jihad", the term used by right-wing groups who accuse Muslim men of drawing Hindu women into relationships and converting them.

Chief minister Mamata Banerjee tweeted, "How can people be so inhuman? Sad."

Home Minister Rajnath Singh, in Kolkata today for a meeting with several chief ministers, sidestepped a question at a press conference on the Rajasthan horror.

"Rajnath ji. An incident occurred in Rajasthan. A muslim youth of West Bengal has been killed brutally due to, a result of love jihad. What is your reaction?" he was asked.

Rajnath Singh appears not to understand the question. He looks at Mamata Banerjee who covers her mouth and whispers to him.

"Now this is a political question.....Thank you very much," he replied.

Malda police is on alert in case tensions erupt, especially when Afrajul's body is brought home.

The date is yet unknown.

Good detective skills. The nephew recorded the video secretly, with the terrorist unaware, and the terrorist is ready to get hanged because he wanted to save some money.

Secretly? I don’t think so. The savage can clearly be seen talking in to the camera and later visited a temple where he was also talking in to the camera.

Victim Mohammed Bhatta Shaikh was from West Bengal and as per information, living with a woman Shambhunath was earlier in relationship with.
https://www.google.co.in/amp/m.indi...ve-jihad-burning-love-triangle/1/1105097.html

So Mr. Shambu can have an affair, but he got all upset that another man who happens to be a Muslim had an affair with the same woman.

Whatever be the reason in this love triangle, the killer Shambunath had no right to take the Muslim man’s life. He deserves death penalty.

He is playing with snakes in both hands. India isn’t Pakistan or Bangladesh (or even China if we compare like to like population size) - Indian Union was established on unity & tolerance beyond religion, race, language and class.

May be weak, but at least constitutionally there was secularism (read it as equel rights on race or religion), and after the hostile days of 50s to 70s, Indian society started to identify themselves as Indian first. I am very close to Indian society from professional & academic links and I saw in my generation a matured state of Indian youth who won’t mind sharing a ciggrate or coffee or even life together with peers/classmates with whom he/she might need to speak in English.

Sadly, this guy is challenging that status co - today it’s Hindu vs Muslim; tmro it’ll start with elite vs schedule cast, then the decease will spread down to Gujarati vs Marathi vs Tamil vs Telugu vs Bengali vs ..... India as a state has so many enemy around that I don’t think anyone should do anything that starts it cracking from inside as well.

Whether someone wants to accept the truth here or not but the truth is that since BJP came to power the mindset of local goons or religion based violence has increased.. The fact that the perception of BJP is hindutva party and their deeds are the same and they don’t punish people spewing venom or carrying out religion based law and order issues makes the mindset of a common man with little bit power contacts that he is superior to Muslims who are poor..

Ultimately it’s a case of the already existing mindset Indians have where we are the biggest sociopath-economic racists in the world and secondly now that BJP is in power attitude of religious superiority over Muslims..

There is no hope for change anyone thinking change will happen is mistaken.. Best one can do is carry on with your life and hope you are never a victim of mob violence or religious riots..

As far as I can remember and have lived I can say Indians were never ever together and were always divided on bases of region, religion and caste.. These incidents always happened and will continue to happen whatever anyone says here the mindset of Indians will never change.. Half of them don’t even realise considering yourself superior over someone else because you are of a certain caste or religion is wrong.. You will continue to hear such news till you are alive..

Horrific incident but not entirely shocking. Indians are getting used to such barbarism in their land. Sad reality.

Getting used? It’s been going on since forever it’s nothing new just because such incidents are filmed now due to technology and uploaded on social media doesn’t mean they have just started.

You are absolutely right.

Either conform to our view or you are an anti-national, anti-hindu, pseudo secular, etc. What a load of rubbish. :))

There is a certain toxicity that they bring with them when elected to power and that's very dangerous for the nation.

Horrific incident but not entirely shocking. Indians are getting used to such barbarism in their land. Sad reality.

What is shocking is not the killing, such killings are normal in our society, eg, kerala, and swords, sickles and axe are weapons of choice. What is alarming that he recorded the act and uploaded it for everyone to see. Challenging the state and the society, and thinks he has done the right thing to do. This is not just a criminal, but a terrorist who firmly believes in his hateful ideology. Although it is good to see that the liberals who file mercy petitions for terrorists or those who commit heinous crimes, are firm on the opinion that this terrorist deserves to be hanged.

Hold ur horses, first of all this is not a community vs community matter, yes the guy has some hatred for some community, but this is more of a dumped guy getting nuts case had it been a communal case he would have gone on to rampage and torch houses etc, Ayodhya was because of the whole ram mandir movement, while godhra was because of whole burning issue, so it's not like other party has been not involved, but the point is not that, a day or two ago a hindu guy and his Muslim girlfriend were killed in kerala, an rj got death threats for supporting women flash mob, Its personal enmity and a deranged man.
http://www.hindustantimes.com/...ry-txyMKYjin1l9DOzJg8gj5K.html

By some accounts, Shambu is a disturbed man. He has a palm-sized tattoo on his chest of his 12-year-old mentally challenged daughter holding a globe in her hand, one of his neighbours, a middle-aged man in khaki jacket told HT.

“The daughter is mentally challenged and he knew that she wouldn’t get married. He knew she will always live with him so he got her picture inked on his chest,” said another neighbour, an elderly woman.

Shambhu’s neighbours refused to be named when they talk about him.

The daughter is said to be very attached to Shambu and wouldn’t leave him when he was home.

The child, one of Shambu’s three kids, has been crying and vomiting since his arrest, the woman said.

“Shambhu used to get up early every day and go to Nauchauki lake to practice yoga for an hour,” said one of Shambu’s brother Nirmal Kumar Regar, who works as a lab

technician at a clinic. Another brother named Lokesh, refused to talk.

Neighbours say that Shambu was engaged in marble business earlier but was unemployed for more than two years and his brothers supported him financially.

The elderly woman claimed that he even ‘rescued’ a young woman who had run away to Bengal with a Muslim man

Anita Regar (named changed on request) had ‘eloped’ with one Mohd Babloo Sheikh to Bengal in 2010 when she was 13. She says the man used magic to influence her into going with him to Sayadpur village in Malda. She adds that the place where she lived was a dangerous place.

“They can kill people easily,” she says. In 2012, Shambu volunteered to go and bring her back after her mother lamented that there was no one to bring her daughter back home.

“When he came there, I told him to go back and that I would return on my own. I came 15 days after his visit yet he took Rs 10,000 from my mother as a price for the ‘rescue’,” says Anita, who considers Shambu as a brother and ties rakhi on him every year. She works at a local beauty parlour and is enrolled for Class 12 as a private candidate.

The elder two sisters married, she has a mother and 15-year-old brother to look after.

Shambu’s neighbours say that he was getting threats from Afrazul who also hailed from Malda’s Sayadpur village because he had taken Anita away from a fellow Bengali. After he brought the girl back to Rajsamand, Bengali labourers had beaten him. Shambu fractured his hand in the attack, they claimed.

Anyway back to the topic, as I said their are two sides of the story, so let's just wait for the whole investigation to come through only then can we come to a conclusion.

200 Arrested In Udaipur For Thursday's Rally For Rajasthan Killer: Police

More than 200 people have been arrested for rioting and arson after they defied restrictions, taking out marches in Rajasthan's Udaipur on Thursday in solidarity with the arrested murderer of a Muslim man, the police said today. The police had to charge batons to control mobs who hurled stones at them. At several places, protesters waving saffron banners violently clashed with the police.

Shambhu Lal, 35, had hacked a construction worker Mohammad Afrajul to death, set his body on fire and made a video of the chilling crime earlier this month. He also let loose a communal tirade on the video, accusing the 45-year-old labourer from Bengal of "love jihad" - a term used by right-wing groups accusing Muslim men of drawing Hindu women into relationships and converting them.

His arrest, however, unleashed a torrent of hate online. In social media messages circulating in Rajsamand and the neighbouring Chittorgarh districts of Rajasthan, Shambhu Lal - charged with of murder, spreading communal hatred and criminal conspiracy - was celebrated.

The police responded by blocking mobile internet and issuing orders to curb the gathering of large groups. On Wednesday, near Jaipur, they arrested Updesh Rana, a leader of a fringe group, who had issued a call to take out a rally in Udaipur yesterday.

But scores of people turned up for the rally Thursday, anyway, taking the police by surprise.

"They tried to take out a procession. They were mainly anti-social elements. We have arrested over 200 and seized over 90 bikes. Their links to any organisation has not established," a senior police officer Anand Srivastav said in Udaipur.

The police say more than half of those arrested are from neighbouring districts Bhilwara, Banswara, Chittorgarh and not from Udaipur city.

Rajasthan hacking: 516 people from across India donate Rs 3 lakh to Shambhulal Regar’s wife

Police in Rajasthan’s Rajsamand have frozen a bank account with deposits of around Rs 3 lakh “collected in the name” of Shambhulal Regar, who is in custody for killing a Muslim labourer from West Bengal, burning his body and circulating videos of the incident.

Police officers told The Indian Express that the money was donated by 516 people from across the country to the account being operated in the name of Regar’s wife Sita. Police have also arrested two businessmen for allegedly circulating images on social media of receipts acknowledging their donations to the account. The police crackdown followed an alert that a message was being circulated on social media with details of the bank account, and an appeal seeking donations for Regar’s family.

“We have frozen the bank account in which money was being collected in the name of Regar. Around Rs 3 lakh was deposited before the account was frozen… We will investigate those who deposited the money to check for any links with the accused,” said Anand Shrivastava, IG, Udaipur Range.

In neighbouring Udaipur district, meanwhile, police have imposed prohibitory orders under section 144 CrPC and suspended Internet services, following reports that some Hindutva organisations were planning a rally on Thursday in support of Regar.

Regar, 36, hacked Mohammed Afrazul to death on December 6, even roping in his 14-year-old nephew to film the killing. He later posted videos of the killing along with inflammatory and communal comments to defend the act.

“During preliminary investigation, we came to know that 516 people donated varying sums to the account. There is not a single state in the country from where donations haven’t been received. A substantial portion of the money was transferred through Internet banking,” said Rajendra Singh Rao, circle officer, Rajsamand.

Two businessmen, Prakash Singh and Dinesh Singh, were also arrested under section 151 CrPC (preventive custody) for circulating images of their deposit receipts. “The two circulated pictures of their receipts on social media after depositing money in the account. When we summoned them to the station, they misbehaved with police,” said Gyanendra Singh, station house officer, Bhim station, Rajsamand.

WTH is going on why on earth are we glorifying a killer? No offence to any friends from our neighbourhood but this type of glorification generally happened in our neighbouring state why are we becoming like them? The court needs to act swiftly and give him maximum punishment ASAP since this is a high profile(media) case and if dragged for too long he will get more and more support from political parties/islamophobes..

'We Don’t Look Each Other In the Eye Anymore': How It Feels to be a Muslim in Today’s Rajsamand

Rajsamand: On the morning of December 6, Iqbal Khan, a Rajsamand based businessman, was called upon by the police to identify a body. Near the body, he was told, a motorcycle was found bearing ‘786’, and star and crescent stickers. The dead was likely to be a Muslim.

“When I reached the spot what I saw was a charred lump of flesh being torn apart by street dogs. I had no idea of who he was. Even if I were someone I knew, it would have been impossible to find out,” Khan said.

A few hours later he received a WhatsApp message. It was a video of Shambhulal hacking Mohammed Afrazul and later setting him on fire.

“Main teen din tak nahi soya uske baad. Ek dehshat ka mahaul ban gaya hai idhar. [I did not sleep for three nights after seeing that video. There is an atmosphere of terror],” Khan says.

Mohammed Rafiq, another Muslim resident of Rajsamand adds, “Hum ab ek duusre se aakhein nahi milate. Us raaste se ab hum nahi jaate. Aisa mahaul pehle nahi tha [We Muslims and Hindus don’t look each other in the eye anymore. We don’t go past that road where Shambhulal murdered Afrazul. This sort of atmosphere wasn’t there before].”

“We were together the whole night. There is a lot of anger and suspicion among the people here. But we’re constantly appealing for peace,” said Feroze Khan, a lawyer based in Rajsamand.

Munobar Ashraf Khan, an office bearer in Anjuman, a Muslim religious body, in Udaipur talked about the time when his 13-year-old daughter showed him the video of Afrazul’s murder on her phone.

“Meri bachhi ne dikhaya tha mujhe. Uski zehni haalat theek nahi thi wo video dekhkar. Fir wohi video news channel pe bhi chalne laga. Hum log kaafi dar gaye the. Padosiyon ke ghar sone chale gaye the [My daughter showed me the video of Afrazul’s murder. Her mental state wasn’t good after it. Then all of us saw the video on a news channel. We were quite scared. Went to sleep in neighbour’s house].”

Several Muslims, including those from West Bengal just like Shambhulal’s victim, left the city. While the natives have now returned, the migrant labourers say they will not return till Mamata Banerjee assures them of their safety.

“There were around 30-35 of us who fled immediately. Among us are several Hindus also. They also fear for their lives. We have worked in Rajsamand for last 15 years but never imagined something like this would happen. Contractors there owe us our salaries. In the rush to leave we’ve also left behind our machines and belongings. But we won’t return for all these till Mamata Banerjee gives us a go ahead,” said Najidul.

In the din of communal hatred around Shambhulal Regar, Muslim voices from within the BJP have also started speaking up against the insecurity they now feel. This is what Tanveer, the head of BJP-run Mewar Kshatriya Mahasabha, had to say about the recent developments.

“Baarud ke dher pe bitha diya hai hame. Kaunsa Hindustan hai ye? Yahan jawan bachhe hain jinhe aaj tak maalum nahi tha curfew kya hota hai. Ye aane waale samay ke liye khatarnaak sanket hain. Shambhu koi swatantra sainani nahi tha. Uski puuja kyun ho rahi hai?”

“[We’re sitting on a gunpowder keg. What India is this? There are young children here who did not know till today what a curfew is. These are bad omens of the coming times. Shambhulal was not a freedom fighter. Why have people begun worshipping him?]”

A senior cleric in Udaipur said that fires have been stoked both ways. Not willing to share his name, the cleric said that not only has he now to appeal for peace from the community at large, he has been asking young bloods from his own community to keep their tempers under check and shun the fancies of revenge.

“Children have come to me saying ‘we’ll take care of things’. Now I am firefighting on two ends. They’re saying unless we act now there will be nothing left to fight for in future. I have been asking them to concentrate on studies. For the first time in my life my grandchildren are asking me about the faith and belief of their Hindu friends. Look what has happened to this society.”

Why do you always highlight Kerala and not the other states ?
