Premier League 2018/19: Reasons to be excited for the new season

THE return of the Premier League is just around the corner, and fans are already chomping at the bit. Whether it be seeing a new star signing in the flesh or cheering their side onto a historic opening-day upset against a Premier League giant, fans from all twenty teams have reasons to be optimistic. Here, we take a look at why every club has cause for optimism in the 2018/19 Premier League season...

ARSENAL

With Arsene Wenger gone, the new era begins with a bang - at home to Manchester City and away to Chelsea. It will be a new-look Arsenal this season and there is optimism that Unai Emery’s work on the training ground will reap rewards. Fans can’t wait to find out.

BOURNEMOUTH

Eddie Howe is now the longest-serving manager in the Premier League and it is continuity rather than change that Bournemouth offer right now. But as well as the usual scalps, has the time come for a cup run? Excitement, as well as excellence, will be the target this season.

BRIGHTON

The novelty of Premier League football hasn’t worn off just yet and with new signings from Mainz, Deportivo and RB Leipzig already on board, these are exciting times to be a Brighton fan. The club has never finished in the top 12 of English football. Could that soon change?

BURNLEY

For the first time in 51 years, European football is back at Turf Moor. Sean Dyche took Burnley to seventh spot last season and the reward is the chance to take the Clarets on tour. Burnley are building something special and there will be high hopes of another fine season.

CARDIFF

Back in the top flight after four seasons away, Cardiff are the sole Welsh representatives following Swansea’s relegation and they will be loud and proud. Neil Warnock will be looking to ruffle a few feathers in the Premier League with his unique brand of football.

CHELSEA

Antonio Conte used up his goodwill in a fraught campaign last time out so Chelsea fans will be re-energised by the arrival of Maurizio Sarri and the promise of much more entertaining football in 2018/19. Key players could be on their way out but a new cycle looks set to start.

CRYSTAL PALACE

After losing the first seven games of last season without scoring, both Roy Hodgson and the Crystal Palace fans will welcome the opportunity to have parity once more. When Wilfried Zaha is fit and in the form of his life, Selhurst Park always offers the prospect of thrills.

EVERTON

Marco Silva made good starts at Hull and Watford but there will be bigger expectations at Everton. After supporters were left underwhelmed by Sam Allardyce’s best efforts, there is a far greater appetite for the style of football that Silva could bring to Goodison Park.

FULHAM

Fulham fans were excited already following their return to the Premier League but Jean Michael Seri is a huge coup for the club. What’s more, after a 43-year wait to get back to Wembley, they are there again for their first away game of the season against Tottenham.

HUDDERSFIELD

Huddersfield shocked the Premier League by staying up and beating some big clubs along the way but is there more to come? David Wagner says the club made “a big statement” in breaking the club record to sign Terence Kongolo. They go again come August.

LEICESTER

Riyad Mahrez will take some replacing but Jamie Vardy remains and maybe the time is right for Leicester to refresh the team anyway. With James Maddison perhaps the most promising player in the Championship last term, the Foxes are still not in the mood to quit.

LIVERPOOL

After going so close to Champions League glory, Liverpool look an even stronger proposition for the forthcoming campaign. Naby Keita and Fabinho bring added strength to midfield, while Xherdan Shaqiri means Jurgen Klopp now has depth in attack too. The new addition of a reliable head between the sticks will please Reds fans too. Is this their year?

MANCHESTER CITY

Can you make the best even better? Pep Guardiola thinks so. With Mahrez on board and Leroy Sane well rested there are enough exciting players at Manchester City to believe this could be the start of a dynasty. This side looks ready for a serious tilt at the Champions League.

MANCHESTER UNITED

Paul Pogba returns as a World Cup winner and with Fred in midfield, is the platform now there to get the best from him at Old Trafford? Alexis Sanchez begins his first full season with the club and with Romelu Lukaku improving too, it’s a big year for Jose Mourinho.

NEWCASTLE

The summer signings have yet to come to fruition at Newcastle but supporters are well used to that. While there is Rafa Benitez there is hope and if the proposed takeover does finally go through then the chance to build on last season’s top-half finish remains.

SOUTHAMPTON

After a dramatic escape from the drop, Southampton are ready to put that behind them and embark on a new era under Mark Hughes. The goalkeeper problem has been addressed with the signing of Angus Gunn and with more arrivals promised, improvement is expected.

TOTTENHAM

Spurs fans are looking forward to a third successive season of Champions League football and aspirations remain that they can challenge domestically too. Kieran Trippier even returns as a national hero. Time for Mauricio Pochettino’s young guns to deliver trophies.

WATFORD

After the upheaval of last season, Javi Gracia will be hoping to instil a little calm at Vicarage Road but they have the players to excite as well. Gerard Deulofeu has signed permanently and a fit-again Nathaniel Chalobah will help. Could Will Hughes and Richarlison kick on too?

WEST HAM

The familiar sight of West Ham making major moves in the transfer market has not always left supporters enthused but this summer feels a bit different. Record signing Felipe Anderson has real quality and in Manuel Pellegrini, there is a proven winner at the helm too.

WOLVES

Such is the buzz at Molineux after their Championship title win, there is a waiting list for season tickets. In Ruben Neves and Diogo Jota, they have players of Premier League quality and Rui Patricio has now joined them. Fans are hoping for much more than mere survival.

Tottenham Hotspurs won 2-1 against Newcastle United

I am so off the PL and it looks even worse after the passion and global appeal of the world cup. I just hope Man city keep up their attacking flair and that Liverpool can challenge, then it MAY be worth a watch.

Oh and as an Arsenal fan, these new signings bring no new hope.

Liverpool looking very good v the West Ham. All the forwards getting on the score sheet then Shaqiri and Sturridge coming on and looking impressive as well. Plenty of options on the bench as well, early signs are good.

They played Joe Gomez alongside VVD today who is inexperienced and played as a right-back last season. This might not be the best idea against better teams and exposes the fact that Liverpool still don't have enough defensive cover. Makes me wonder why they didn't push to sign a centre-back in the transfer window. Someone like Maguire or even James Tarkowski who was very impressive for Burnley last season. If they are to pursue silverware they need another solid CB to partner VVD.

Manchester City look unstoppable again. I do hope we get a tittle race but it's really difficult to see that happening.
 
Wilfried Zaha has committed his future to Crystal Palace by signing a contract extension, with no release clause, on improved terms to establish him as the highest-earning player at Selhurst Park.

The Ivory Coast forward, who only signed a five-year deal last summer, is now under contract until the end of the 2022-23 campaign and is understood to be earning around £130,000-a-week. The Palace chairman, Steve Parish, had admitted over the weekend that there had been “some noise in the market” but, despite Chelsea, Everton and Tottenham Hotspur having been credited with an interest in Zaha, no formal offers were ever received for the 25-year-old during the transfer window.

The player, without whom Palace failed to register even a point last season, had spoken with the club’s hierarchy and assured them he would not agitate for a move. That offered some reassurance with the contract extension, first mooted at the end of last season, now signed.

“It’s absolutely fantastic for the football club,” said Parish. “We’re all so committed this year to giving it our best shot, and this is the final piece of the jigsaw.

“It’s nice to put all those stories to bed, stories that we knew weren’t true and were just rumour mongering. Wilfried the player that we’ve seen all summer has done everything properly and right. He’s shown the respect he’s got for this football club, and he should be applauded for that with all the noise that was going on around him. Today, we’ve settled everything in terms of his long-term future, so we’re absolutely ecstatic.”

He added: “Wilf grew up a stone’s throw from Selhurst Park from the age of four, and has been with the club since he was 12. This agreement is yet another example of his lifelong commitment to the club, and our commitment to him. This is an amazing day for everyone here at Palace, our supporters and of course Wilf – and is richly deserved.”

Zaha, who joined Palace at the age of 12, has made 288 appearances and scored 44 goals in two spells at the south London club either side of a brief period with Manchester United. He scored on his full debut in 2010, the first game of Parish’s co-ownership post-administration, and is Palace’s joint-highest Premier League scorer with Chris Armstrong. He has claimed the club’s player of the year award in each of the last three seasons.

Parish had made clear that Zaha is worth “more to us than what anybody would ever pay us‚“ with no elite club formalising their interest in securing him.

“I’m very pleased,” said Zaha, who has been employed by Roy Hodgson in a central striking role and scored the team’s second goal in Saturday’s 2-0 win at Fulham. “Obviously, I just wanted to get it over and done with, so I can just focus on the season. I’m buzzing that we managed to get it sorted.”

TBH, Arsenal was an easy game for them with emery trying out a new system, they looked comical playing out from the back, saying that Ozil, Lacazette and Bellerin could have and should have scored, would have changed the game completly.

As for now De Brynes injury is a huge blow to City, he was there puppet master pulling the strings, it may just blow open the title race.

The story of the orange Lamborghini sums up the malaise at the heart of West Ham, a club with another new manager, another £100m of summer acquisitions and four straight Premier League defeats to show for it all.

The vehicle was parked up in the same bay for days last spring at the club's Rush Green training ground and when a regular visitor asked why, it emerged that it belonged to striker Diafra Sakho, who had left the club for Rennes in France three months earlier.

'He'd just bought it and left it there,' a source tells Sportsmail. 'The sheer waste of it, sitting there for everyone who walked past to see.'

The gargantuan incomes of Premier League football allowed a bang-average forward, who has since flunked in the French league and been loaned on to Bursaspor in Turkey, to view the idea of handing back a £200,000 leased vehicle as simply not worth the effort. Yet the same river of TV money has done pitifully little for the basic football fabric and infrastructure of the club he left behind.

When David Moyes made use of his manager's changing room at Rush Green last season, he was surprised to find 14 people also occupying it. He discovered that he was expected to share.

When the 'Beast from the East' struck last winter, Moyes had to take the players into the gym as there was inadequate undersoil heating at Rush Green. The gym wasn't big enough, so extra Astroturf was laid outside it as well.

West Ham insist that Rush Green has had millions of pounds spent on it and is a fitting Premier League training ground. But an even more fundamental requirement for Premier League success is a serviceable system to find and buy the best players – and a picture emerges of this club’s being far below the required level.

'They have a handful of scouts and no target lists,' one source tells Sportsmail. 'The transfer policy seems to stem from the same four or five agents calling [co-owner] David Sullivan and telling him what he needs.

'I've not come across a Premier League club like it for sheer lack of football infrastructure. The Premier League income affords them this way to try to buy their way out of trouble. The rest of Europe just laughs at this kind of thing.'

Here is a club that does not seem capable of looking beyond which players are on the market. It is thought that David Moyes had wanted to overhaul the club's antiquated and random way of buying players, earlier this year, having built his success at Everton on a meticulous system.

There were promises to fans from Sullivan that things would change after the home defeat to Burnley last March provoked a pitch invasion. But West Ham's big bang instead came with the arrival of Manuel Pellegrini, who has brought Mario Husillos, sporting director of Malaga, a club relegated from La Liga last season. Very early days, but as yet no improvement.

Pellegrini has been decisive on some matters. He insisted on a three-year deal for Jack Wilshere, while Sullivan was inclined to offer the midfielder one year. New goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski and the new central defensive combination are solid enough. Yet the initial signs are of a club still lacking any sense of what kind of football they want to play, or of how to bring the best from their players.

Marko Arnautovic is the best player on the club's books yet the very last thing he needs is a manager who tells him so. Moyes reined in the mighty ego and reaped the rewards, managing him more successfully than Mark Hughes at Stoke or Slaven Bilic. The more affable Pellegrini, whose man-management touch is much lighter, has made Arnautovic captain. His old Stoke traits seem to be back.

Few, if any, players will tell you Pellegrini has put a little fear in them. Liverpool again pulling of an important "away" win at Wembley. Still not at our best up front yet delivering the goods means we should be serious title contenders. The bench is as strong as it ever was, they're will be many bigger tests starting with PSG in the Champions League on Tuesday. Firmino walking away with an eye injury is a concern.
 
Shock result for Everton but a much needed win for the hammers who have spent a large amount of money.

Very happy with LFC's performance against Spurs esp taking all 3 points. We have a squad which is very confident but will have a spell where our form declines. It's important to keep winning while we are on form.

Some big games coming our way in the next few weeks now.
 
Top of the league.

As long as we don't slip up on the banana skin that is WHU, Liverpool will be the ultimate test. I honestly think their attack is better than City's and if our defence can can handle that while also having Hazard on peak form, I think there won't be a team in Europe we couldn't beat.

Personally I think we still need a lot of work defensively though and our high line is not going to work vs Liverpool so I hope Sarri took some notes from the Roma games last season (and drop Luiz for Christensen before it gets embarrassing please).

Mourinho seems to be on the verge of being sacked. Apparently the Man Utd team were discussing his impending departure on the way back home from their defeat to the hammers. Zidane is supposedly improving his English speaking skills ready to take over the Man Utd hot seat. Mourinho's signings have not worked out in particular Pogba has been a complete waste of money and Sanchez seems disinterested as well. On the way out he'll be hinting how the board didn't back him in the transfer market:13:. They are already struggling the keep up with the front runners Man City, Chelsea and Liverpool. Even Arsenal and Spurs seem better then Man Utd at the moment. They will struggle to finish in the top four if things don't improve very soon.

Liverpool again struggled to create any chances with the front three failing to impress. Don't know why Klopp won't give Studge or Shaqiri a starting place, they look threatening whenever called upon. The replays seem to suggest Dijk getting a foot to the ball before Sane went down. All in all a fair if disappointing result for a Liverpool die hard like me. We need to sign a creative midfielder when the window opens as Wijnaldum and Henderson are to similar. The team is crying out for goal scoring midfielder/s, the front three need support from the middle of the park. Great teams score goals from everywhere. I am walking on with hope in my heart:maqsood
 
Liverpool were a little lucky to get away with a draw but it's a result they'll take. They've had a tough run of fixtures where they've played Spurs, PSG, Southampton, Chelsea, Chelsea, Napoli, Man City. They've had to play a game every 3 days. And from that, they didn't lose a single game in the league. They will also take the result considering that they're really not at the top of their form right now. If this was peak form Liverpool, you'd back them to win almost all of those games.

They'll also be happy being joint first knowing they've only dropped points (draws) against City and Chelsea away while winning away at Spurs.

Man City on the other hand will rue the opportunity to beat Liverpool at Anfield. They're not going to get a better opportunity than getting an 86th minute penalty against a slightly off-form and tired Liverpool team.

It was clear City's primary purpose today was to not lose. Their defense played quite deep. Walker never really got forward. They made a lot of fouls in midfield and stopped potential counters. Fernandinho was very lucky to have stayed on the pitch. You could see Liverpool players were tired after 60 minutes or so as they were not pressing at all and lost the ball in midfield a lot. One of Liverpool's strengths is winning second balls but after the 60th minute, City players were first to every ball.

Pep will regret taking Aguero off and probably should have started Sane, who has a habit of tormenting Liverpool. Klopp should've put on Shaqiri and have him run at City defenders at some point. A front three of Mane - Salah - Shaqiri could be pretty exciting.

Also, Liverpool's most hyped signing of all time, Naby Keita, was timid today. He lacked energy and seemed afraid to be on the ball. Robertson was also very poor defensively. Lovren was fantastic and Van Dijk was probably man of the match until he gave the penalty away.

For City, Sterling was pretty average as he usually is against Liverpool and Mahrez was wasteful. Everyone else was fairly decent. Fernandinho probably a little lucky getting away with fouls and fisticuffs.

I am sure no one outside of West London thinks that. Best player in the premier league this season definitely but he is some way away from being the best player in the world.

The best player in the world is still Messi by some distance. It doesn't matter who gets nominated for Fifa Player of the Year awards, Messi is judged on a completely different standard to everyone else. If any other player had a year like Messi last season they would've won POTY.

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho was involved in a furious touchline bust-up after Ross Barkley's 96th-minute equaliser rescued Chelsea's unbeaten Premier League start at Stamford Bridge.

Mourinho's side looked on course for an outstanding win over his former club after two goals from Anthony Martial overturned the first-half lead given to the hosts by Antonio Rudiger's 21st-minute header.

He bowed his head in disappointment as Barkley scored in the dying seconds after a goalmouth scramble, but then reacted angrily as Chelsea technical assistant Marco Ianni celebrated in front of him before then pumping his fists in Mourinho's direction again.

The Portuguese jumped from his seat and was then held back by a mixture of stewards and Manchester United staff as he attempted to get down tunnel at Ianni.

It was a dramatic conclusion as Mourinho saw victory snatched away after he had replied to the taunts of Chelsea fans by holding up three fingers to remind them of the three Premier League titles he won while in charge at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues looked in control when Rudiger took advantage of Paul Pogba's poor marking to head home Willian's corner, but United responded superbly after the break and Martial's double - a smart, swivelling finish and a composed, low effort - put the visitors on the brink of three points until that frantic finale.

Liverpool were definitely quite lucky today. Their passes in the final third just aren't coming off. Shaqiri looks impressive. On the bright side, they won ugly and are still unbeaten in spite of having played the top 3 teams.

The real question is who is going to beat Manchester City though. They look absolutely brilliant and play the most incisive football. They've already played against their bogey team at their bogey ground. Who, if anyone, will beat them? I don't see anyone else capable of winning the league. Think Liverpool will swap 2nd and 3rd between themselves without really threatening to usurp Manchester City.

Head to head LFC can beat any team including City both home and away but City over a 38 game season are very consistent. As we have seen today, they dont just win games against lower opposition, they destroy them!. All Liverpool can do is stick with them towards the end of the season. If by April, there is 3 or so points between them, City under pressure might make some mistakes and Liverpool can cash in. But at the moment, its hard even for a die hard Liverpool fan like myself, we will win the league.

Great wins for Brighton and Watford today.

True. But Liverpool have already played them at home and were for the most part outplayed by Man City. Obviously United or Chelsea can beat them on their day but as things stand City look scary. City at Etihad will be a very difficult prospect for anytime.

The other thing about City is technically and tactically they are far superior to any other team. They have so much quality that City can score a goal at will. If it's 0-0 with 10 mins to go and City need a win, you'd expect City to get that goal.

Liverpool have got by with a number of wins by a single goal margin after an early goal. But apart from the goal they don't look threatening.
 
Liverpool winning games when the front 3 haven't been at there best. Don't know how much longer that can go on for but when they are firing, Liverpool will be close to winning the league. Still backing City to win the league.
 
The difference between Liverpool and Man City is creativity in the middle of the park. Man City have creativity in the form of Silva and De Bruyne compared to our stale and unimaginative first choice midfield of Wijnaldum, Hendo and Milner. Keita has not done much so far, Fabinho is another defensive midfielder, Lallana is past his best and Ox is a long term injury. Champions elect have midfielders who score goals when the going gets tough. We need to buy at least one creative midfielder in January like a Nabil Fekir or Aaron Ramsey who we are strongly liked with or even both.

Other then that the Chelsea man clearly provoked Jose by saying something untoward when running past him when celebrating the equaliser. It's due to Jose's glum expressions that he is often disliked, the man needs to lighten up:viru If Liverpool were lucky then so were Spurs, their keeper won it for them making some fine saves to keep the Hemmers out.

Gotta feel for Rafa at Newcastle. Seemed as if someone was gonna buy them until a few months back then the interested party pulled out. A club with enormous potential is being ruined by a terrible owner who has already told the manager he won't be getting anything to spend in January. I won't be surprised if Rafa just walks away.

The other thing about City is technically and tactically they are far superior to any other team. They have so much quality that City can score a goal at will. If it's 0-0 with 10 mins to go and City need a win, you'd expect City to get that goal.

Yeah, actually forgot about that game, probably because it was a 0-0 bore draw. The front three of LFC need to start firing again to challenge as they have shored up their defence and addessed their goalkeeping woes.
