This could be curtains for Liverpool after City have just destroyed Man Utd in a one sided match. They were so dominant that could have won the match with just 8 or 9 players. Man Utd look terrible at this moment in time, they have no imagination, flair or creativity in the side at all. If City do win it it will be because they demolished Utd at Old Trafford where as Liverpool drew that match.

Manchester City struck an important blow in their pursuit of a second successive Premier League title with a convincing derby victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Pep Guardiola's side knew anything but a win would leave Liverpool at the top of the table and in charge of their own destiny with only three games left.

City were anxious in a goalless first 45 minutes but turned up the heat after the break to take them one point clear at the top of the table.

They have played the same number of games as Liverpool, performing with control and composure to eventually outclass United.

Bernardo Silva's low drive went inside United keeper David de Gea's near post after 54 minutes and the keeper was at fault again when Leroy Sane's drive went straight through him.

Liverpool must now respond at home to relegated Huddersfield Town at Anfield on Friday, while City travel to Burnley on Sunday.

City's players showed nerve as well as quality to come through what many felt would be their toughest assignment between now and the end of this enthralling title campaign.

They could have been forgiven for fearing the worst after a goalless first half in which they were superior but saw chances get away and also demonstrated a tendency to over-elaborate.

Instead, they moved through the gears after the break to run out easy winners in front of their jubilant fans, who clearly recognised the significance of winning this game in hand to move ahead of Liverpool and stay in control of their own destiny.

Sane's introduction after Fernandinho's injury gave City extra cutting edge but it was the magnificent Silva who made the breakthrough when his low shot went past the pedestrian De Gea.

City never looked back, although in truth they barely had a moment's trouble defensively all night.

Sane's second - proving again what an attacking weapon he is - merely gave the scoreline a greater air of reality and the closing stages resembled a training exercise as City kept possession and United chased shadows.

Guardiola and his players celebrated at the final whistle after their second big win after edging past Spurs on Saturday. Two big questions. Two big answers from Manchester City.

The biggest question of all - who will be champions? - remains to be answered, but at least City know it remains in their hands.

Man Utd look lost
If United and manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer were looking for a crumb of comfort from a chastening night, it was that they at least performed with a little more respectability than when they were trounced 4-0 at Everton on Sunday.

And that was about it.

In every other respect, the flaws which make the gulf in class between these two clubs so huge was brutally exposed by City.

United were outmanoeuvred in all areas of the pitch, with De Gea's current decline emphasised by his questionable role in both goals.

Whether it is ongoing contract negotiations or a malaise from this troubled season at Old Trafford, De Gea is light years away from the keeper who had earned such a glittering reputation.

United sank fast after City went ahead, Old Trafford a sea of thousands of empty red seats as City went through their party pieces to close out the win.

Paul Pogba was again poor, even suffering the ignominy of losing a straight aerial challenge to the diminutive Raheem Sterling, while Fred had a nightmare alongside him.

City supporters responded to the Stretford End chants of "Ole's At The Wheel" with "The Wheels Are Falling Off", although United are still in the hunt for a top-four place.

The away fans had a point after United's seventh defeat in nine games in all competitions and are now without a clean sheet in 12 games, their worst record since August 1971.

United are currently not even in City's shadow and the scale of the task facing Solskjaer is becoming ever more stark with each defeat

5-0 for Liverpool.

A walk in the park against a very poor Huddersfield team.

Salah, Mane and Robertson were brilliant for Liverpool.

An easy win for the Pool as expected. Liverpool and Man City are guaranteed to take the first two spots in the league. It is just a question if someone can take a few points of City in their remaining three matches. The front three were phenomenal for Liverpool as they have been all season. Good to see Ox back again looking fit and hungry. Was unlucky not to get on the score sheet. Bring on Barca!

97 point second place position incoming.

Don't bet on it. Burnley away is gonna be tough as it Leicester at home. Newcastle won't be doing Liverpool any favours either but yes City are favourites for sure.

I can easily it see happening. When's the last time City and Liverpool dropped points? I think it was West Ham for Liverpool and I think Palace or Leicester quite a while ago for City.

90% that City have won it. There is still 10% chance that they may draw a match at Burnley or Brighton. Liverpool should win their remaining home game versus Wolves but they may also drop points at Newcastle too. The slight hope Liverpool will have is City still have two away matches.

Liverpool once again put the pressure back on Manchester City as they returned to the top of the Premier League with an emphatic win over Huddersfield at Anfield.

Jurgen Klopp's side are now two points clear of the reigning champions, who have a game in hand, with Naby Keita's goal after 15 seconds setting the tone for a dominant display.

Winning possession high in Huddersfield territory, the Guinea midfielder swept a close-range effort into the bottom left corner from Mohamed Salah's pass to record the Reds' quickest goal in a Premier League match.

It was also Liverpool's 100th goal in all competitions this term, and they doubled their lead when Sadio Mane glanced Andrew Robertson's superb cross into the bottom right corner.

Salah then lobbed Town goalkeeper Jonas Lossl on the stroke of half-time to deliver a third after running on to Trent Alexander-Arnold's ball forward.

While Huddersfield twice went close to scoring through Juninho Bacuna and Karlan Grant, it remained largely one-way traffic after the break.

Salah and Keita both went close to their second goals of the evening before Mane headed in his second from Jordan Henderson's cross to briefly become the Premier League's joint-top scorer, on 20 goals.

However his Egyptian team-mate Salah regained that honour, converting from another Robertson delivery in the closing stages to move on to 21 goals, sealing a fine team performance.

Liverpool have now amassed more points than Arsenal's unbeaten "Invincibles" team of 2003-04 and have 12 points more than the Manchester United Treble-winning team of 1998-99.

No team has ever reached this number of points (91) and not gone on to win the title.

Manchester City, though, can regain top spot if they win their game in hand at Burnley on Sunday (14:05 BST), after which both teams have two games left

That's true, I just don't see it happening, you never know though. It would be the choke of the century if City drop points now seeing as they have no other competitions to have to focus on and the league is the priority.

Don't think it will happen. City know they have 3 games to go. The players will give it their all. However, stranger things have happened and it's not over till it's over.

Agreed they've always been professional and are quite good at finishing off teams. It's unlikely that they'll be dragged down now.

Arsenal losing again - this time 1-0 to Leicester.

City won despite not being at their fluent best. Was hoping Burnley would hold on even though it was just a matter of time before City struck. In the other match De Gea's error again cost United a crucial point. I feel his form is due to his heart no longer being at Man United. With all the uncertainty around him he'll most likely leave in the summer.

Really poor game tonight at Old Trafford. Really represents the lack of quality in both teams. United aren't going to get top 4 unless Chelsea and Arsenal get even worse due to by UEL fixtures. I'm not personally confident in Chelsea to beat Watford and Leicester however I don't see Arsenal doing any better than us.

Dutch duo Virgil van Dijk and Vivianne Miedema have won the Professional Footballers' Association Player of the Year awards for 2018-19.

Liverpool defender Van Dijk, 27, beat Raheem Sterling, Bernardo Silva, Sergio Aguero, Sadio Mane and Eden Hazard in the vote by his fellow players.

Arsenal forward Miedema, 22, beat Steph Houghton, Nikita Parris, Keira Walsh, Erin Cuthbert and Ji So-yun.

Manchester City forward Sterling won the men's Young Player of the Year.

City also provided winners for two other awards, with England forward Georgia Stanway claiming the women's young player prize and England captain Houghton receiving the PFA Special Achievement award.

Van Dijk succeeds Liverpool team-mate Mohamed Salah, who won in 2017-18, and is the first defender to take the award since Chelsea centre-back John Terry in 2004-05.

Miedema, who helped Arsenal clinch their first Women's Super League title since 2012 earlier on Sunday, follows Chelsea and England striker Fran Kirby.

The rock at the heart of Liverpool's title challenge

'Calm & unflappable' Virgil van Dijk wins PFA Player of the Year award
Van Dijk has been one of the key players in Liverpool's ongoing title challenge this season, playing in every one of their Premier League fixtures.

Signed in January 2018 from Southampton for a world record fee for a defender of £75m, the Netherlands international has been a rock at the heart of the Reds' defence.

Liverpool have kept 19 clean sheets from their 36 league games this season, 28 of which they have won.

He has also contributed three goals and two assists during the campaign.

"It's the highest honour you can get as a player to get voted player of the year by the players you play against every week," said Van Dijk.

"It's special. I'm very proud and honoured to receive it."

Van Dijk could still end the season with a Premier League winner's medal with Liverpool trailing Manchester City by a single point with two matches remaining.

Chelsea playmaker Hazard, who won in 2014-15, was nominated alongside the City trio of Aguero, Silva and Sterling, and Van Dijk's Liverpool team-mate Mane.

The free-scoring forward behind Arsenal's title win
Arsenal women forward Vivianne Miedema celebrates scoring against Brighton
Vivianne Miedema set Arsenal on their way to securing the WSL title on Sunday
Netherlands international Miedema is the top scorer in the WSL this season, netting 22 goals and providing 10 assists in her 19 appearances.

In all competitions this season, the prolific striker has scored 39 goals in 46 appearances.

The former Bayern Munich player hit the opener as Arsenal secured the WSL title with a 4-0 win at Brighton's Amex Stadium, in front of a new league-record crowd.

"I'm obviously really proud to represent my team here, we've had an amazing year, especially with winning the league," she said.

"I'm just really happy I could help my team all season long with scoring goals and it means a lot."

Miedema, who was also nominated for the women's young player award, is the first Arsenal player to win the senior prize since team-mate Kim Little claimed the inaugural award in 2013.

This summer, she will hope to propel the Dutch to success at the Women's World Cup in France, as they look to build on their triumph at Euro 2017.

Miedema was the only Arsenal player nominated, seeing off City trio Houghton, Parris and Walsh and Chelsea pair Cuthbert and Ji.

Sterling goes close to senior prize but wins young player award instead
PFA Team of the Season - Ederson, Robertson, Laporte, Van Dijk, Alexander-Arnold, Bernardo Silva, Fernandinho, Pogba, Mane, Aguero, Sterling
Many believed it was a two-horse race between Van Dijk and Sterling for the men's Player of the Year award.

Instead Sterling, 24, takes the young player prize, beating City team-mate Silva, Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford, Liverpool right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold, Bournemouth midfielder David Brooks and West Ham midfielder Declan Rice.

He succeeds City team-mate Leroy Sane in winning the award.

England international Sterling has enjoyed another extremely effective season for reigning champions Manchester City, scoring 17 league goals and providing 10 assists.

He could end the season with a domestic treble of winner's medals, having already won the Carabao Cup with City, who lead the title race and face Watford in the FA Cup final on 18 May.

Sterling has also received recognition for his stance against racism in football this season, having criticised newspapers' portrayal of black players and calling for stronger punishments for supporters who racially abuse players.

Van Dijk wins BBC readers' and pundits' votes
Van Dijk was also the pick of both the BBC Sport readers and pundits for player of the year.

The Dutchman received 56% of votes by BBC Sport readers, with Sterling in second place on 26%.

Tottenham forward Son Heung-min, who was not shortlisted for the PFA award, got 6% of votes in third.

Twenty-one pundits - Alan Shearer, Ian Wright, Alex Scott, Paul Ince, Phil Neville, Jermaine Jenas, Rachel Brown-Finnis, Stephen Warnock, Chris Sutton, Pat Nevin, Danny Mills, Mark Lawrenson, Martin Keown, Danny Murphy, Chris Waddle, Leon Osman, Sue Smith, Joleon Lescott, Mark Schwarzer, Matthew Upson and Kevin Kilbane - chose their top six performers of 2018-19.

Van Dijk and Sterling were their two outstanding candidates, with the former earning 14 votes to the latter's seven.

Both were selected in a PFA Premier League team of the year dominated by Liverpool and Manchester City players.

PFA Team of the Season - Ederson, Robertson, Laporte, Van Dijk, Alexander-Arnold, Bernardo Silva, Fernandinho, Pogba, Mane, Aguero, Sterling
Van Dijk was joined by Reds team-mates Alexander-Arnold, Mane and Andrew Robertson, while Sterling has City colleagues Aguero, Silva, Ederson, Fernandinho and Aymeric Laporte for company.

The only non-Liverpool or City player in the side is Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba - a selection that has been met with some criticism.

Women's Young Player of the Year Stanway has scored 11 goals in the WSL this season.

She has the chance to win two domestic trophies this season, with City facing West Ham in the FA Cup final at Wembley on Saturday, having won the League Cup in February.

Stanway, who made her senior England debut last year, beat overall women's Player of the Year Miedema, team-mate Walsh, Chelsea midfielder Cuthbert, West Ham United forward Alisha Lehmann and Bristol City keeper Sophie Baggaley.

Special Achievement award winner Houghton, 31, is set to lead the Lionnesses at this summer's World Cup in France, having won 104 caps for her country to date.

Her husband, former Liverpool, Bradford and Bolton defender Stephen Darby, retired after being diagnosed with motor neurone disease last year.

Houghton has said she would give up her World Cup place to care for him if necessary, although he has said he will not let her do that, while England boss Phil Neville has praised her response to the news.

Houghton was also named in in the PFA's Women's Super League Team of the Year alongside City team-mates Parris and Demi Stokes.

Chelsea provided three players - Ji, Cuthbert and Hannah Blundell - as did Arsenal, with Miedema, Little and Lia Walti selected.

Baggaley and Birmingham City defender Aoife Mannion make up the 11.

Leicester midfielder Hamza Choudhury has been charged with misconduct by the Football Association in relation to comments made on social media.

The 21-year-old wrote the messages in 2013 and 2014 and apologised for them earlier this week.

The FA said the comments constituted an "aggravated breach" as they included reference to ethnic origin and/or race and/or sexual orientation.

Choudhury, a graduate of Leicester's academy, has until 13 May to respond.

One of his messages contained a racial reference, and in another he said he did not "feel sorry" for anyone who took their own life.

"They do not represent my true beliefs," said the Loughborough-born England Under-21 international, who in another post criticised women's football.

"I've learned a lot as a person in my early years as a professional - certainly enough to know that some of the thoughtless comments I have made in the past are both hurtful and offensive.

"I'm deeply sorry to anyone I have offended - both at the time and since they've been recirculated."

Tottenham had two players sent off as they missed the chance to guarantee Champions League football next season with a 1-0 defeat to Bournemouth.

It was far from ideal preparation for Mauricio Pochettino's side, who face Ajax in the Champions League semi-final second leg on Wednesday in Amsterdam, having lost the first leg 1-0.

Son Heung-Min was dismissed for pushing Jefferson Lerma at the end of a frantic first half, in which Eric Dier was lucky not to have been sent off and Bournemouth could conceivably have had two penalties.

Then, just over two minutes after coming on at half-time, Juan Foyth was also shown a straight red card as he slid studs-up into Jack Simpson.

Bournemouth gave a senior debut to 19-year-old Irish goalkeeper Mark Travers and he made five saves in the first half to keep Spurs at bay, but was a spectator in the second half.

Despite their numerical advantage, the Cherries were unable to capitalise until Nathan Ake popped up to score a 91st-minute winner, heading in from a corner.

Spurs have now won just once in their past four league games and stay third on 70 points with only next Sunday's match against Everton to come.

In the race for a top-four spot, they are four points clear of fifth-placed Arsenal, who have two games remaining. Chelsea can go third if they beat Watford on Sunday.

If we get 3rd after Spurs bottle it and win the Europa League I can't wait to see what the media is going to come up with. The agenda has to stop.

Nevermind, they'll just change it to Hazard to Real Madrid stories every week. Maybe a fake story about Willian wanting Mourinho back? How about Alonso's past?

Liverpool hang on for a 3-2 win... over to Deluded Brendan!

What is deluded about Brendan? Liverpool again showing their character by getting a late winner. The two subs combined to get a crucial winner, now I am hoping Leicester can at least hold City otherwise it'll be over coz Brighton won't do it in City's last match. Mo Salah's head injury is a major concern as well. In a strange way Liverpool were lucky that Newcastle scored their first goal otherwise Trent would have been sent off for handball seconds before. Ten men Liverpool would have struggled to win at Newcastle.

The mighty and relegated Huddersfield hold Man Utd adding further humiliation to Ole's overrated boy's!:uakmal This must be incredibly embarrassing for the self proclaimed "biggest club in the world". Reality has set in after Ole was getting some beginners luck in his first few weeks as United manager. Look at his overall record as manager to see a very average one at best. Despite having a run of facing average teams Man Utd have struggled to win most if not any of them. £86 million Pogba, £75 million for Lakaku and £500,000 a week for a bench warmer like Sanchez!!!:maqsood I could have done much better then them.

Deluded Brendan is a Twitter meme, don't get so upset by it...

Liverpool got very lucky in that game, not deserved but that's what champions do, somehow find the win.

So Man U back in Europa League they need to get rid of Ole and appoint someone with proven track record heck how about Arsene Wenger to become United boss for 2 years to get things. Back on track

Of course I will get upset if you criticise the great Brendan Rodgers:ashwin I will remind you of this later on in the day after the City-Leicester match is over:uakmal

Kompany won the title for City with that incredible hit. Even it it hadn't gone in Man City would most likely have scored anyway with continued pressure on the Leicester goal. They just took the pressure off Leicester after the goal was scored. The deciding factor of the title race was Liverpool's inability to defeat a pathetic Man Utd side at Old Trafford.

No, the deciding factor was not being able to hold Leicester at home from 1-0 lead - how, I had explained somewhere in PP. To narrow down, that call to save Clyne's wage cost those 2 crucial points.

Man City beat United at Old Trafford. We came up against one of the weakest United sides in recent years yet couldn't score against them. Other events also played a part throughout the season like us drawing at West Ham.

Congratulations Man City!

Absolutely phenomenal performance to win the league and thwart a blistering Liverpool.

Congrats to Man City and their supporters for winning the league. Another missed opportunity for Liverpool due to some crucial draws like home to Leicester and away to Man Utd and West Ham. You need to be almost perfect to win the league against this Man City side. Seeing how much Man City have net spent compared to us the difference between the two sides is nothing. Irony is that Liverpool and and Man City want the others trophy more assuming Liverpool win the Champions League. The transfer window opens very soon although I don't expect major investment from either of these two sides. There should be plenty of in's and out's at Man Utd who again lost at home to Cardiff:uakmal

No tactics Pep starts and Mahrez when no one would have and he scores . No tactics Pep :broad

Manchester City retained their Premier League title and finally ended Liverpool's magnificent challenge after surviving a scare to come from behind and outclass Brighton at the Amex.

Pep Guardiola's side started the day knowing victory would ensure they would be the first team to retain the crown since Manchester United 10 years ago - but any slip-up could let in their relentless pursuers Liverpool, who were hosting Wolves at Anfield.

And when Glenn Murray gave the Seagulls the lead with a glancing header from a corner after 27 minutes, anxiety rose in Sussex and hopes rose at Anfield that Liverpool might win their first title in 29 years.

Manchester City's response was instant, emphatic and ruthless as they swept Brighton aside to end the campaign with a record 14 successive league victories, making it 32 in all, which equals the record they set last season.

Sergio Aguero pounced in the area to equalise inside 83 seconds and Aymeric Laporte arrived unmarked on the end of a corner to put City ahead before half-time.

Brighton had no way back and City completed the formalities in spectacular style as Riyad Mahrez fired high past Mat Ryan just after the hour and Ilkay Gundogan's spectacular 72nd minute free-kick sparked wild celebrations.

City may not have repeated the 100 points that won the title last season but this was arguably an even sweeter success given the season-long battle with Liverpool.

Man City stung into action
City knew their task at kick-off here in Sussex - but whether it was a combination of nerves or unwitting complacency, it took the fright of going behind to kick them into action.

City were careless and lacking in urgency until Murray bundled in a near-post header.

It was the signal for the last assault on the title.

Aguero swiftly put the show back on the road and once Laporte escape the attentions of Murray to head home, this was job done.

It was a fitting decoration that the final two goals of City's season were thunderous efforts from Mahrez and Gundogan, demonstrating the quality that is spread so liberally through this squad.

Brighton, to their credit, did not simply stand aside and allow the party to take place: Chris Hughton's side were organised and resilient but once they levelled matters up, City were irresistible.

And even the home fans accepted the inevitable by the final whistle, rising to first give a standing ovation to City captain Vincent Kompany when he was substituted and then to Guardiola and his team once referee Michael Oliver had sounded the final whistle that confirmed they were were Premier League champions for the fourth time and for the sixth time in total.

City's achievement, completed with that astonishing 14-game win towards the winning post, is underscored by the fact they saw saw off a Liverpool side that lost just once this season - to City - and amassed 97 points.

This is a magnificent feat by Guardiola and Manchester City.

The best team always ends as Premier League champions - and no matter how superbly Liverpool have performed, they came up against a truly outstanding team that was just one point better.

Brighton survive again
This was a day of celebration for Manchester City - and also one of satisfaction for Brighton as they look forward to another season in the Premier League.

It was a particularly special day for their iconic 38-year-old Spanish defender Bruno, who was making his final appearance. He was cheered throughout and made an emotional farewell when he was taken off.

Bruno, clearly loved down here, was also acclaimed during a post-match speech.

The Brighton fans left for summer in good heart after surviving late worries that they may be hauled into the relegation fight and now shrewd manager Hughton will start plotting again to ensure they are in position for another season of consolidation when it all starts again in August.

You're inevitably going to drop some points here and there. I think the most crucial result was the Man City game at the Etihad where they lost 2-1. Had they managed to get at least a draw, they would be champions right now.

This has been a premier league season to remember. The sport itself is often too ugly, too overpriced, too cynical and let us be honest, the English game is now about as English as chicken tikka masala. However, Manchester City, Liverpool, Tottenham and to a lesser extent, Chelsea and Arsenal, have pushed the boundaries of exciting football. Skill and athleticism have been shown at a high level by more participants than ever before, wonder goals scored by the unlikeliest of champions. The quality on display this season, and hopefully for seasons to come, are unparalleled by the moribund game in Spain, Italy and Germany. Yes those leagues have some great teams, great players and a few great moments but the sheer depth of world class talent is not on show.

The champions are as such because they have played the most consistent and a times, the most beautiful football. The runners up and that really is too small a term for them, are Champion's League finalists. Their opponents on that day will be a team finishing fourth this season, and playing football just as breathlessly, recklessly and skillfully as any other in the top flight. Arsenal may yet take a spot in the Champion's League, against Chelsea, nowhere near as fun to watch as City or Liverpool but cold, calculating and pushing their own brand of winning.

It is a remarkable collection of sides and players, Salah, Firminho, Mane, Stering, Kane, Aubemeyang, Lacazette, Hazard, Aguero and co. Attacking football at its very best and enough to re-ignite a bit of the love I once had this game now so beset by lies and cheating.

It is far easier to win a home match against Leicester then draw or win at Man City. Also have to remember that City missed a last minute penalty at Anfield as well. The crucial matches were the few points Liverpool dropped against so called opponents. Unlike City we also failed to win against one of the worst Man Utd sides at Old Trafford.

True, but just that one game could have made all the difference, Liverpool went into that game with mindset of winning but were very unlucky with a ball nearly crossing the goal line. In the end, millimetres made all the difference.

Yes football is very easy once you can exploit the riches of Abu Dhabi sovereign wealth built off the back of slave labour.

At least in cricket despite its inequalities, there's some semblance of a level playing field. Scotland can beat England, Afghanistan can push India and Pakistan.

Had we won not drawn home too Leicester we would have been champs.
