Mark Ramprakash appointed England Batting Coach

ECB today confirmed that Mark Ramprakash has been appointed England Batting Coach with immediate effect.

Ramprakash, who began working with the England team last May following periods with England Lions in 2012-13, will work across all formats beginning with a one day tour of Sri Lanka later this month. The 45 year old played 52 Tests and 18 ODIs for England during an 11 year international career as well as playing 461 First-class and 407 List A games for Middlesex and Surrey retiring in 2012, 25 years after making his debut for Middlesex.

Paul Downton, Managing Director England Cricket, said: “I am delighted to have appointed Mark as England batting coach. During his time with both England Lions and the senior teams he has proved a valuable addition to the coaching group

“Mark has formed excellent relationships with players and a strong partnership with Peter Moores and the management team and I have no doubt he will continue to have a positive impact as we begin an exciting winter of cricket.”

Mark Ramprakash said: “I am hugely excited to have been appointed England batting coach and am looking forward to building on the relationships I have established during the summer. I will draw on my 25 years of experience as a cricketer but also am open to learning all the time. I feel we have a very exciting group of players and am relishing the opportunity to continue working with them.”

He will teach them to average 27 in tests ;-) Though he averaged 42 against Australia in the McWarne era.

But seriously, Ramps is an excellent technician, who will have his work cut out to teach them a back-foot game by the next Ashes.

They have their Doctor-Psychoanalyst to help with the mental side of the game. Same bloke who helped Team Sky riders win two Tours de France.

Great technician but mentally very frail.

I don't think he was "mentally very frail" - rather, he was an overthinker, which prevented him from relaxing at the crease and remaining in The Zone.

Mark Ramprakash loses his job as England batting coach

"It's been a huge privilege to support the team over the last five years. I'd like to wish all the staff and players the very best of luck for the future".

Mark Ramprakash has lost his job as England batting coach ahead of the Ashes, the ECB has confirmed.

The former England batsman - who played 52 Tests between 1991 and 2002 - was appointed in November 2014 but will not be involved in the series against Australia, which starts on August 1.

Ramprakash tweeted the news shortly before England's second Twenty20 international against Windies, with the ECB later releasing a statement.

"We will finalise the coaching set-up for the Ashes in the next couple of weeks. Mark Ramprakash will not be part of the coaching set-up for the Ashes," the statement read.

Graham Thorpe has recently been serving as England batting coach in white-ball cricket and could now step up to the role in Test cricket.

England assistant coach Paul Farbrace recently announced that he will leave his position after the Windies tour to take up the job of sporting director at Warwickshire.

Reflecting on Ramprakash's exit, Sky Cricket expert and former England captain Nasser Hussain said: "He has been left with a very vulnerable-looking batting line-up in the Tests and they have not been overly successful.

"He has to take some of the responsibility for that but mainly it's the batsmen who need to take responsibility. Coaches don't go out and bat for you, it's the players.

"We don't know why [the change has been made]. Ashley Giles has come in as director of cricket and may want someone else.

"It might be a little concern that there have been two big changes [with Farbrace and Ramprakash leaving] - but an England fan will say maybe that's what we need in the batting department.

"But a different batting coach doesn't make England's top three look any better overnight."

England's Ashes campaign begins at Edgbaston followed by further games at Lord's, Headingley, Old Trafford and The Oval, with all matches live on Sky Sports Cricket.

Meanwhile Pakistan keeps renewing Grant Flower's contract...

Think he's been too soft on the players. England's batsmen have collapsed time and again under his watch so can't say this surprises me.

Ramps never really had the mental approach for international cricket. He seemed to overthink and get out, though he batted like Bradman for Surrey.

Thorpe had the mental approach in spades, averaging fifty in tests at #5.

Ramprakash was like Dravid, only difference is, Dravid could convert his scores. Agree with Robert, he was not cut out for international cricket. I always thought he was just too soft as a person. Then again, the english team he played in were not brute by any stretch of imagination. Apart from Hussain, Thorpe and Darren Gough, they were softies.
