Maryam Safdar named in Panama Papers as beneficiary

The daughter of Pakistan's Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has been proved to have been involved in the Panama Papers scandal, a German newspaper said, as it backed up an earlier claim.

German daily Suddeutsche Zeitung on Monday posted documents on Twitter confirming that Maryam Safdar is the beneficial owner of offshore companies named in Panama Papers.

Al Jazeera searched the database of the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) that includes 11.5 million documents leaked from the Panama-based law firm Mossack Fonseca, and found Safdar's details.

Safdar was listed as the beneficiary of Nescoll Limited, an offshore company registered in British Virgin Islands. Her brother Hussain Nawaz Sharif was listed as the signatory.

Allegations of corruption against the Sharif family are being heard in Pakistan's Supreme Court.

Prime Minister Sharif told the court in a written submission last year that the leak was not the proof against him, as his children were not his dependents.

He said he was not holding any offshore companies. Sharif also claimed that he had paid tax and declared all of his assets in 2013.

The Panama Papers leak revealed how Mossack Fonseca allegedly helped current and former world leaders, as well as businessmen, criminals, celebrities and sports stars, evade or avoid tax via anonymously-owned shell companies and offshore accounts.

The story garnered wall-to-wall coverage and dominated front pages of newspapers across the world.

ICIJ, a non-profit group in the United States, coordinated the reporting with 376 journalists from 109 news organisations and 76 countries poring over the files.

I think this should end the ambitions of Maryam Safdar as next Prime Minister of Pakistan.

Forget them, where is our NAB (National Accountability Bureau set up SPECIFICALLY to deal with such situations?) or FIA? All on his payroll, either his relatives or long-term political allies. The first day of the court when the court hinted it will call NAB's head, the government sent him on a holiday to China.

These stories have been uncovered before by a lot of journalists but they were accused by PMLN and their supporters as either working for the 'establishment' who want to 'derail democracy' or because of 'foreign conspiracies'.

If i am not wrong 18th Amendment in the constitution doesn't limit it to 3 times. The ban on 3rd time being PM/CM was lifted in 18th Amendment by PPP+PMLN but there was no limit set.

Trio were punished at least and their crimes were restricted to the arena of sports. These crooks' crimes result in mass corruption leading to mass crime, no accountability, no investment in education or health-care resulting in deaths and negligence on the scale of thousands/millions.

Considering they are looting for decades, they have been in power (this family) for half the time we have had democratic rule yet still whine about not having enough chances, I'd say their shamelessness has no end and neither do they care as long as everyone ignores their corruption.

The Supreme Court on Friday wondered why the Jamaat-i-Islami chose to segregate the main case from its petition, seeking an investigation against 436 individuals named in Panama Papers for allegedly stashing fortunes in foreign offshore companies, and allowed the case to proceed against a particular family.

“What were the reasons to separate the JI petition during the hearing of the Panama Papers [and] that too after 24 hearings,” wondered Justice Sardar Tariq Masood, also questioning whether the real purpose was to keep the hearing focused on a particular family.

Justice Masood was heading a two-judge Supreme Court bench that had taken up the JI plea for a direction against 436 individuals who allegedly stashed fortunes in offshore entities in foreign lands.

On Nov 3, 2017, the party filed an application to remind the Supreme Court about its pending petition which was filed by party emir Sirajul Haq in Aug 2016. Though the judge did not comment any further, he observed that it appeared as if there was something more than meets the eye.
