Mayank Agarwal - Next big thing for India?

Thanks to small boundaries, otherwise he is a poor man's Azhar Ali.

This is a blistering knock now.

87° from 39 and going strong

100 in 45 balls - his maiden IPL hundred!

Amazing innings but is that bowling a bit weak?

Definitely not the best bowling line up in IPL and this is a small boundary but great batsmen are recognised as much by their resistance to great bowling as they are by their ability to cash in when there is an opportunity to punish the opposition which is what he's done tonight.

Agarwal c Samson b Tom Curran 106(50) [4s-10 6s-7] - wonderful innings - easy win for Punjab am sure.

They have Samson, Butler like players too. Punjab needs to continue this onslaught and bat them out with 230+. Anything below that isn't totally out of reach on this ground.

Will he be finely put of his misery and be replaced with Rohit Sharma or someone else?

He is a very good player but because of improving his hitting ability for IPL, he made a slight change in his technique and kept high batting stance which is why he is troubling against the inswingers. He needs to be persisted and will do well.

The only problem is Rohit will be back and Gill should be given a longer run. Their is KL Rahul also knocking the door and after two tests, Virat will replace Hanuma Vihari.

So, our top 5 batsmen would be Rohit, Gill, Pujara, Kohli and Rahane. Then you have Jaddu and Pant and the bowlers. So, there is no place for Mayank, KL, Vihari, Shaw and Pandya in the test team.

He is a stud batsman. He focused too much on IPL and odi hence he has been poor recently.

He will bounce back. Just need to fix his stance a bit. He smashed the same bowling in 2018.

He is a killer. He just needs to fend off the new ball for a bit. Hope he is still considered but I guess Rohit will come in because well management picks players based on marketability.

Mayank has under performed but he needs to be trusted completely. Give him the full series imo.

India XI in next test:-

Rohit
Gill
Pujara
Kohli
Rahane
Pant(wkt)
Jadeja
Ashwin
Saini
Siraj
Bumrah

India alternative XI:-

Mayank
Shaw
Vihari
KL(c)
Iyer
Pandya
Saha(wkt)
Kuldeep
Umesh
Ishant
Shami

You can make an alternative XI and it can still beat quite a few teams going around in the world.

Sick of seeing that high backlift from Indian batsmen.

This guy should play for India in ALL formats!!!!

Bump!

It seems he will struggle to make it to any format in the current Indian team. Is his career across all three formats over with the emergence of likes of Pant, Gill and KL Rahul ?

Mayank Agarwal should take Pakistani citizenship :)

I think Mayank will certainly make Pakistan an extremely strong unit in Asia especially with his batting at top order. He will be their second best batsman atleast.

Some things are inevitable in life. Death, his dummy batting against left hand seamers. Taxes you can avoid if you are smart.

Shaheen will break his toes in the first net session.

Very Dodgy technique against pacers, don't seems to having different gears (always tries to play airy shots). So far whatever I have seen of Mayank does not boost any sort of confidence in me to say he is a future star for India.

Looks more like India's version of Shehzaib or Shehzad

Wrote this about Mayank 10 years back, not much have changed (except the promising start that he got to his test career which seems just shortlived, as of now).

Shaheen will break his toes in the first net session.

But is he gonna bowl him on toes? Last time I recall, he was bowling wide outside off and wide short stuffs to Buttler and Woakes.

Fine player. Just shows the batting depth in India when players like Agarwal, Iyer and Vihari are on the sidelines and only get a chance when the main players are not available.

If they played for Pakistan, Sri Lanka or Bangladesh, they would easily be the batsmen in the team.

So i guess you didn't wait for your verdict till he performed in SENA in tougher conditions. A criteria you usually use for Pakistani batsmen.

Pakistan should not take performances in Asia for granted, considering the fact that our so-called great batsman Babar himself struggles on Asian pitches and cannot play spin.

Agarwal was scoring double-tons for fun against the same South Africa that restricted Babar to a solitary half-century with Maharaj making him his bunny.

Agarwal is a monstrous player in Asian conditions with better technique and mentality compared to Babar.

Very useful HTB. Enjoy his game against spin, in the future hope to watch him and Iyer bat a full day in India against some visiting spinners. Both are brutal against all forms of spin, remind me of 90s Sidhu.

Mayank and Shreyas have lived to their reputation by proving that if given a consistent run, they will do a pretty respectable job in test cricket and are good enough to walk into most of the sides in the world.

To be fair, Vihari hasn't been given the chances at home which is why his stats are deceiving but he too is very good.

Is there any Indian batsman you have not declared better than Babar, Rahul, Rahane, Pujara, Agarwal, Gill and the list goes on. Let them perform for few year than we can decide. Players get found out more they play. Most of these Indian batsmen have excelled at home. There is no doubt they are very good batsmen but calling them better than all season all format player like Babar, who has been breaking all kind of records, is bit early.

I was never really comparing Agarwal with Babar. Most posters agree that Babar has a lot to prove in test cricket.

My question simply was that if a Pakistan player does well in Asian conditions, you raise doubts on their abilities to do well overseas. If an Indian batter does well in Asian conditions, that Indian batter becomes the next big thing.

Is that fair?

Too many next big things from India these days. It is hard to keep track of those. :inti

Despite all next big thing threads both India and Pakistan will do well to find one batsman in tests who can average near 50 or higher in the next 5-10 years.

Babar is a more prominent and renowned batsman than the likes of Iyer, Agarwal etc. simply because he plays for a far weaker batting team where the level of competition is very low comparatively.

Babar made his debut in 2015 and he has played 150+ LOI matches and he has batted in the top 3 for almost 99% of these matches.

If he was in India, he wouldn’t have played one-third of these matches because he would be competing with players like Kohli, Rohit and Dhawan. Who are the senior batsmen in Pakistan? Average players like Hafeez and Malik, who wouldn’t even make India’s C team.

Babar is a very good player but India produces a dozen batsmen like Babar every generation. A young Indian batsman trying to establish himself in the Indian team is a completely different ball game compared to Pakistan.

Pakistani fans get overexcited when it comes to Babar because he is the first Pakistani batsman in 15+ years who has the game for all formats, but that is something very normal for India.

If a young batsman Pakistan scores double-hundreds and big hundreds at home/Asia against quality teams, I would be very excited and won’t care how he fares outside Asia.

NZ 62
Mayank 150, 62

Never looked like getting out today before the injury aggravated. Wonderful player to have for home tests.

This test he scored just 2 runs less than 11 NZ players across 2 innings. Need more of this HTB especially at home.

Strong competition in India, surely. Not easy to play 80 tests and still average under 40.

How can Kohli continue to hold a place in this Indian side at home? He doesn't open, has no secondary skill. Purely looking from batting PoV, if Rohit and KL Rahul continue to open (looking at how well they did in England) there are 3 slots open for batsmen since Pant, Jadeja, Ashwin, Axar, 2 fast bowlers will occupy the spots from number 6.

Mayank and Iyer have proved that they are better than 2021 Kohli especially against spin, so they occupy number 3 and 4 positions. Gill and Sundar are youngsters who pass the eye test, and must be backed at 5 because of age and immense potential, I'll have both of them over Kohli for sure. What about other non-opening options? Can Sarfaraz, SKY, Vihari be any worse than Kohli, not to forget that they all can bowl and are younger.

Forget XI, I don't see how Kohli even makes it to the Indian squad. He can take Pujara, Rahane along with him and leave the test side for good. Time for BCCI to make the call, Indian cricket cannot allow Kohli to drag the team down any longer.

33 is fairly young for a batsman. Kohli will probably retire from T20Is soon and the 2023 World Cup will most likely be his farewell in ODIs.

In Test cricket, he will continue for another 3-4 years. India needs him both as a batsman and as a leader. He is the greatest Asian Test captain ever and deserves more respect for his leadership.

Nonetheless, if he is finished as a batsman and this is not just prolonged poor form, it is unlikely that BCCI will have the courage to pull the plug on his career especially at the age of 33. He is one of the greatest players and superstars of all time.

One can draw parallels to the way Ganguly was disposed after 2005 but Kohli’s stature as a player is way bigger.

Ganguly was always viewed as a fairly dispensable Test batsman especially when compared to the other big guns - Tendulkar, Dravid, Sehwag and Laxman - who were all superior. His value as a Test cricket was mainly due to his captaincy.

Besides, the younger batsmen like Agarwal, Iyer etc. will get plenty of chances moving forward because both Pujara and Rahane are on the brink of getting discarded, so there are plenty of spots up for grabs.

There is virtually no chance of Kohli getting axed unless he voluntary retires from Test cricket which is extremely likely. He will definitely try to stretch his Test career by quitting LOIs in the next couple of years.

'Just look where the bat has gone': Gavaskar slams Agarwal's shot selection, asks 'don't you make mental adjustments?'

Gavaskar questioned Agarwal's shot selection, saying that although the batter looks like a million bucks while middling the ball, the India opener appears a tad vulnerable against the moving ball.Sunil Gavaskar was not impressed with Mayank Agarwal’s dismissal on Day 1 of the third Test between India and South Africa in Cape Town on Tuesday. Agarwal, who was dropped on 0, scored 15 before he edged Kagiso Rabada to second slip. Gavaskar questioned Agarwal’s shot selection, saying that although the batter looks like a million bucks while middling the ball, the India opener appears a tad vulnerable against the moving ball.

"Agarwal is a very good player when the ball is hitting the middle of the bat, for the simple reason that he’s got that lovely little push but when the ball moves a little bit, that bat speed gets him into trouble. We have seen that edge when he was on 0, that would have been a terrific catch. Look at that… see how hard he has pushed at the ball," Gavaskar said on air. "Really if the bat and pad were together, he would have played and missed it. But because he went for it… he has gone for the ball… and in Test cricket there is an aspect of leaving the ball. Leave it as much as you can in the first hour. Just look where the bat has gone. Had it been close to the pad, he would have been fine."Gavaskar admitted that this knack of poking at the balls away from stumps could well stem from the fact that a lot of batters these days play plenty of T20 cricket, where playing shots is the way forward. But the former India captain stressed on the importance of making adjustments in the mind upon transitioning from one format to another."To a great extent yes, but then it has got to be the mental adjustment more than anything else. Don’t you make mental adjustments from Test to 50-overs to T20 cricket? That is what needs to be done," Gavaskar pointed out.

He is a very good test opener with a penchant to score important runs. Should be persisted with. Going forward, he should open with Rohit with Vihari/Gill at 3 and Iyer/Rahul at 5. Don't know how long Rohit will continue to play tests as he has just started blossoming recently but then he is almost 35. Gill could be shunted to opening once Rohit leaves.

Mayank Agarwal suffers major health scare, admitted to ICU in Agartala

Mayank Agarwal played a key role in his side’s 29 run win against Tripura in the recently concluded Ranji Trophy clash. Up next, Karnataka is slated to play against Railways in Surat. The team was traveling to Surat when the incident happened.

Mayank Agarwal has been admitted in ICU after complaining of burning sensation in mouth and throat while he was boarding a flight.

Despite being out of favour in the Indian Cricket Team, Mayank Agarwal has been performing well in the domestic circuit. He is currently playing well and leading his side in the ongoing Ranji Trophy clash.

Furthermore, Mayank is keen to prove his worth in the shortest format of the game. With the Indian Premier League barely a month away, Agarwal is desperate to perform for Sunrisers Hyderabad in IPL 2024 in vying for another chance in Team India.
