Mayank Agarwal - Next big thing for India?

Sunday, 05 August 2018

A spectacular and unbeaten double century by Mayank Agarwal and a hundred from Prithvi Shaw powered India ‘A’ into the lead on a dominant second day of the first unofficial Test against South Africa ‘A’ in Bengaluru on Sunday. The home side ended the day’s action with a 165-run lead as they took charge of the contest.

The pair shone as they recorded a 277-run opening stand in reply to the visitors’ 246-run total. Shaw played the more measured innings between the two, bringing up his seventh First-Class hundred before his dismissal in the 59th over on 136 (196 balls, 20 fours). Twenty-seven-year-old Agarwal (220*) at the other end produced a brilliant batting display, smashing 31 boundaries and four sixes on his way to his double-ton landmark.

Following Day One’s Rudi Second (94) led fight back, the tourists came into the second day on 246/8 with Malusi Siboto (13*) and Beuran Hendricks at the crease. The lower order’s resistance didn’t last long as India’s Mohammed Siraj (5/56) picked up the final two wickets with no runs added the overnight score.

With the Indian batsmen on top form, it proved to be a difficult day for captain Khaya Zondo and his bowlers in the field. Dane Piedt (1/56) and Duanne Olivier (1/69) provided the only breakthroughs, accounting for Shaw and Ravikumar Samarth (37).

India ‘A’ reached stumps on a hefty 411/2 after 87 overs, with Agarwal and captain, Shreyas Iyer (9*) at the crease.

He is already 27.

He should have already been given a chance in LOIs earlier.India have crazy batting talent.

Unlucky to miss out.

Looked more catchy on the eye to me than Prithvi Shaw.

India are blessed with so many super talented batsman.

India need to get rid of Rahane from the Test side. This guy or Gill should be brought in.

Quality innings on Test Debut.

Amazing how Kohli the Superstar and role model is rubbing onto the indian youngsters.

Just have a look at his silky flexible wrists drives through the offside against Lyon. Kohli's speciality in those shots.

Looks like Agarwal and Prithvi might cut shot Test Careers of Rahul or Sharma/Vihari.

Vijay will be dropped soon and Agarwal will partner Shaw once he gets fit.

May be India might drop Vihari and accomodate Rahul in the middle order but Vihari will first get a decent run I think.

I remember competition between Agarwal and Shaw was pretty tough when Shaw got picked but Agarwal got his chance due to Shaw's injury and Rahul and Vijay's failure and he grabbed the oppurtunity with both hands.

Indian Batting Culture and History keeps producing batting gems.

It was a flat wicket. So I will not read much into his technique.

However, he seems to have the will to succeed. He was determined to score runs and play confidently instead of getting bogged down like Vihari.

Overall, a very good innings considering the pressure on him. Its been a while since I saw an Indian opener score some runs.

Rahul does not play with a straight bat even while defending. The bat always comes down at an angle. He has technical issues and with low confidence, those issues are getting magnified.

Mayank showed Rahul how to play with confidence today.

Got to say he looked good and played really well. I think India have found another good batsmen here.

Vihari is very useful when India decide to play 4 pacers like they did in the last Test and there is no other spinner in the team.

Decent effort for a debut.. Still this is the roadiest of all roads.

Impressive performance so far from him, should end up with a 150 or mor vs SA in 1st Test

Amazing career he's had. Now an Indian test opener. Several years younger than me and from my school. Was known as a flair, very aggressive batsman. Don't think anyone at the time (junior cricket) thought he was a future test cricketer.

What a combo - Mayank and Rohit :)

The year 2019 has been a year of inspirational performances with the bat in Test cricket. Heading the list of course has been Australia’s comeback man Steve Smith, who redeemed himself with a stunning performance in the Ashes, which helped the Aussies retain the urn by drawing the series 2-2.

Smith in fact had the highest Test score to his name this year until India played their first home Test of the year and youngster Mayank Agarwal slammed a record double century to move ahead in the list. Agarwal managed to convert his maiden Test ton into a double on the second day of the Vizag Test.

Mayank scored 215 against South Africa before being dismissed by Dean Elgar. His brilliant innings included six sixes and 23 fours. The right-handed batsman had also become the fourth Indian cricketer to convert his maiden Test century into a double-century. Dilip Sardesai, Vinod Kambli and Karun Nair are the other batsmen to achieve this record in past.

Smith, who made his comeback to Test cricket after 16 months during Ashes 2019, played an innings of 211 in the fourth Ashes Test in Manchester. He had joined Marnus Labuschagne in the middle when Australia were two down for 28 and put up 116 runs for the third wicket along with the right-handed batsman.

The fourth Test of the series was a comeback game for the former Australian captain as he had to miss the third Test due to concussion, after being hit by a bouncer from Jofra Archer in the third Test at Lord’s.

Jason Holder (202*), Kane Williamson (200*) and Ross Taylor (200) are three other batsmen who have scored double-centuries in 2019. Holder’s maiden double-century came in the third innings of the opening Test against England in Bridgetown. Williamson’s double-century came in the opening Test against Bangladesh in Hamilton. Taylor reached the milestone during the second Test in Wellington.

Cheteshwar Pujara came close to scoring a double-century during the fourth Test in Australia earlier in the year but missed the mark by seven runs.

Meanwhile, Mayank’s double-century and Rohit Sharma’s century saw India declare at 502/7. Opening the innings for the first time together, they put up 317 runs for the first wicket. Their partnership was third-highest opening partnership for India and highest against South Africa.

I am confused at the bolded part... I understand he doesn't have lots of experience but he turns 29 in February. He is hardly a youngster :))

And this is his official age... Subcontinental players tend to be slightly older than their official age too!

Iftikhar Ahmed syndrome - everyone is a youngster until they turn old

India opener Mayank Agarwal, who converted his maiden Test century into a double ton on day two of the first Test against South Africa in Visakhapatnam, was extremely pleased with his individual effort and the game's overall progress.

Agarwal had earned his maiden Test cap in the Boxing Day Test against Australia last December and scored a fifty in his first outing for a winning cause. A three-figure mark didn't elude him for long, as he marched his way to 215 on Thursday, 3 October, hitting 23 fours and six sixes before being dismissed by Dean Elgar.

The right-hander, who has been a consistent performer in the Indian domestic circuit, and aggregated 2,141 runs in the 2017/18 season alone, couldn't be more pleased with his maiden Test ton.

"The word 'finally' makes a difference, but I am happy with the way I played," Agarwal told the host broadcasters at the end of the second day's play. "I'm extremely happy. It's a feeling that I really can't describe. It's my first hundred, and to make it a double."

His opening partner, Rohit Sharma too blossomed in his maiden Test innings as an opener, scoring a stroke-filled 176 which had an exactly identical boundary count to Agarwal. The Karnataka batsman heaped praise on Rohit, the limited-overs vice-captain, as he reflected on the 317-run partnership.

If Rohit and myself, we can keep batting together like this, it will make it really hard for the opposition.
Mayank Agarwal

"If Rohit and myself, we can keep batting together like this, it will make it really hard for the opposition," he said. "We had a really good partnership, to lay the foundation. The way he (Rohit) dominated the spinners was great to see from the other end. Initially, it (the pitch) did do a bit for their seamers. As the sun came out, it got better."

The 28-year-old identified patience and hard work as the key virtues for his success. "To be very honest, I would like to say you need to think about your own game. You go through different emotions – somewhere you feel, maybe I am batting well, maybe I will get my chance, but it doesn't work like that. You've got to be patient and keep working."

India eventually declared at 502/7 in the final session of play, before spinners Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja took three quick wickets to have the visitors reduced to 39/3 at stumps. The pitch already looks conducive for spinners, with ample turn on offer, aided further by erratic bounce.

"As we came to the lunch on the second day, the ball started keeping low, and around tea, it started turning," Agarwal said on the conditions. "Good signs for us."

"(On Ashwin and Jadeja) They have bowled with good pressure. If we can keep bowling tight areas, and the way the wicket is playing now, I think we can benefit from it."

BCCI introduced TW3 method to detect age long back. You cannot fudge age. He is legit 29. Only reason he didn't get a chance earlier was not because he was not good. Just that Kohli loved to persist with oldies. Mayank Agarwal has been screming for selection for the last 4 or 5 seasons. He should have walked in atleast 3 or 4 years back.

Yet Manjot Kalra ended up being a year older than stated. TW3 is only semi-reliable till the age of 16. Not doubting Mayank is the stated age but the system isn't foolproof

His age is right unless he joined school at a late age and did some golmal there too.

When I was in 12th, he was playing for the junior team which had players max from 8th std. I'm 32.

Looking good for another 100 in 2nd Test vs SA

Great positive knock again, were BCCI a bit too late in getting mayank into international scene? he has looked solid since his debut against australia.

Looks a really good player

He is decent. Not a special player. He like many Indian batsmen are good on Indian pitches. Good thing about him is that he can handle bounce very well. As usual he will get exposed in England like Dhawan, Rohit and countless others before..

Some people are late bloomers for example Michael Hussey and Misbah UK Haq

High quality player. The hard yards in domestic cricket are paying dividends. He knows his game , he knows how to get big scores. Hence you see him being able to adjust.

This is the importance of having good pitches in domestic cricket.

how to you counter swing bowling though? for the Asian batsmen I mean. Need batsmen with solid defense hey?

Agarwal is pure class. As I said earlier, he is the best Asian Test batsman at the moment after Kohli and Pujara. Indian batting pedigree is unmatched. Agarwal is more assured and confident after 7 Tests than the likes of Azhar and Shafiq after 10 years.

By God what a knock!!!

243 with 8 sixes.

He just broke the Indian test record of most sixes in an inning.

Way to go kid.

"Thank you," says Mayank Agarwal to Deep Dasgupta on Star Sports. "I changed my mindset in 2016. Dropped my fear of failure. After that, I only got hungry and hungry. There have been times when I've not got runs, so when the going is good, just thinking of making it big. Really enjoyed the time since I made the Test team. Playing in Melbourne was special, and having contributed to the series win Down Under was a top feeling. That's the feeling which has stuck with me. It's the feeling that makes the team go out there and win tournaments."

Agarwal is a solid addition to the squad but his test is to prove outside Asia like it is for all Asian players.

He actually played a very good knock in Aus on just landing.

Yes but consistent performance outside Asia in tests is what makes very good players a great one. The next away tour will be big for him. We always have plenty of batters to do brilliant at home.

Saw the highlights. Full of gorgeous shots. His six hitting is like ROhit Sharma. One interesting thing is even he is beaten in the flight he is able to make last minute adjustment and hit the ball a long way over the rope. Terrific late adjustment. Scores all around the wicket. 20 more tests like this he will be a termed as certifiable Sehwag clone.

Might turn out to be next Pujara. Boult would be really tough challenge for him.

Looking forward to that. I believe he'll do better than KL , Dhawan etc.

He must perform if we are to win that series. We can't afford being 10-2 and I have zero hopes on Rohit

Hopefully Shaw will be in team as to when Rohit we slide him in.

@ OP the answer is > NO!!!!!!!!!!!!! Prithvi Shaw is the BIGGEST THING TO COME TO WORLD CRICKET....... STop this conspiracy to keep him out of the team.....

lol at some saying he is a poor man's shewag. He is going to be far better than shewag. Mark my words. This guy is a future Great. Phenomenal player.

He plays like kohli actually. Very similar style. More aggressive though.

Don't forget Shaw will be back. That kid is destined for greatness too.

Some fans don't learn. Don't call him the next big thing please.

The last 3 'next big things' from Indian cricket were Pant, Pandya and KL Rahul. They didn't live up to fans expectations and are turning out to be average and inconsistent performers.

Irrespective of his performance against NZ in NZ he should get as many chances as KL Rahul. :inti

Bang on!

You cannot create hype based on lusty blows in franchise tournament and expect them to perform in test cricket.

Selectors and Kaptaan must be given credit

I think playing first class cricket on pitches which allow you to bat long periods have helped him.

He seems to be able to adjust his game to the situation and see off good spells of bowling. Once set he knows how to go big.

I think he can do a good job in LO cricket.

well unlike pandya Rahul and pant, Mayank is very skilful. He has a bright future. Rahul has always been a dud. His technique was always poor.
pandya is poor test player.
pant is well pant.

Basis his 6 hitting prowess, we should get him in our LoI teams as well. But the problem is that we are too hung up on a laggard like Dhawan since eternity especially in T20s.

Like Rohit, he too is a slow starter. But unlike Rohit, he doesn't make up for his slow start. So at least in T20s, he is as useless as Dhoni. At least Dhoni still has his great keeping skills to boot, Dhawan has nothing else to show.

Dhawan is in the team because he is the best tournament batsman we have by far.

lol, we aren't playing any more ICC tournaments for next 1 year at least. Do we need to carry him for that period just because he is a tournament player? And mind you, T20s have never been his forte, ODIs are which we won't be playing at all for next few months.

Dhawan is in the team because he is the best tournament batsman we have by far.

He has played 2 T20 WCs and failed in both the tournaments. Was also dropped in both tournaments after repeated failures.

BTW,kudos to you for believing in Mayank way back in 2011 when he was struggling in IPL.

Mayank has all the skills to succeed at this level. He also has an aptitude to go big after starts.. In this series he will certainly give a good start to team but cannot expect big scores unfortunately. The pitches will be green and survival type ones..

If he bats like this on the whole tour I am afraid for him but he is playing his last international matches. Was all at sea in the early part of the match.

He batted one complete session which is quite good for an opening batsmen on this wicket. On a similar wicket with pretty much same amount of grass, England were bowled out at 58 and that team had Cook, Root and Stokes.

I know.
Even in this innings he outdated Shaw, Pujara and Kohli. But from what I was seeing live he will not often survive in these conditions. For me he looked the most lost out there early in the innings.
Don't forget he has strong competition. Sharma is a sure in in the next test series. His injury was actually a blessing for him.

Nope. Agarwal will always be preferred ahead of any other opener not named Rohit.

He is phenomenal at home and chances of him doing well overseas looks higher than Shaw and Rohit to me. Too early to make statement on Gill. He is more compact than Shaw but surely at this age, he will also have hard times in difficult conditions at international level.

He really is not made for these conditions. He is all at sea. It will be shameful for India if there is so much talk about batting talent and this guy continue to be their test match opener.

He played pretty well in the First Test. And even the likes of Kohli struggled on this pitch. Plus this is his first ever outing in Newzealand. You can’t throw out players like that.

Not saying he deserves to be drop. It's a personal judgment on his batting. I don't think he has got it to make it at the highest level.

He did pretty decent in Australia and scored two double centuries in India. I don’t think you will have many players who can do well all conditions. Heck, India never had such an test opener like that for decades.

and out comes the hate brigade. They will forget about how he mauled australia right off the couch. He needs time. He is a phenomenal player. He just started his career. Only a matter of time before he learns how to adapt to swing conditions.

he did better than any other opener including your Latham and other fodders who struggled to cross 10 in australia.

Some players are just better in certain conditions. Warner made a career our of being a huge home/new Zealand and south africa bully. He sucks vs swing, spin.

Flopped big time.

But, he should be given another chance. One bad series shouldn't mean getting dropped.

It was his first poor series, save that 1 fifty.

He is least of our concerns at the moment.

This guy can and should represent India in all formats. Great find. Probably our best find in last two years.

What a sight it is to see Mayank and Rahul opening for Punjab. Future of Indian batting right there!!!
