More than one in 10 school entry-age children in England are at risk of measles because they have not had their vaccine jabs, data reveals.

Coverage for the two doses of MMR that helps protect five-year-olds against measles, mumps and rubella is currently at 85.5%.

That is the lowest for a decade, and well below the 95% target recommended to stop a resurgence of measles.

Measles is highly contagious, more than Covid, and can cause serious illness.

Nine in every 10 people can catch it if they are unjabbed and exposed.

As well as a distinctive rash, measles can lead to severe complications, such as pneumonia and brain inflammation, and sometimes can be fatal.

Vaccination can remove almost all of these risks.

Two doses of the MMR vaccine give 99% protection against measles and rubella and about 88% protection against mumps.

When a high percentage of the population is protected through vaccination, it becomes harder for the disease to pass between people.

But since the start of the Covid pandemic, there has been a concerning drop in the number of children receiving these vaccines on time.

Experts say some parents may not have realised doctors were still offering appointments, or did not want to burden the NHS.

Coverage of the first dose of the MMR vaccine in two-year-olds has now fallen below 90%.

This means that more than one in 10 children under the age of five are not fully protected from measles and are at risk of catching it.

Among all five-year-olds in England, 93.7% have had one dose and 85.5% have had the recommended two doses.

In 2017 the World Health Organization declared that the UK had eliminated measles - meaning that although some cases could still occur, the disease was not widely circulating and spreading.

Measles remains more common in some other countries, meaning it can return to the UK and spread in people who are unvaccinated, if given the chance.

The UK lost its elimination status after cases ticked up again in 2018, with 991 confirmed ones in England and Wales, compared with 284 in 2017.

Measles cases have plummeted during the Covid pandemic, largely because of social distancing and less travel.

But the UK Health Security Agency is concerned that measles could make a comeback in the unvaccinated when restrictions are fully lifted.

It is asking parents and carers to make sure children are up to date with their jabs.

The MMR vaccine is free on the NHS when a child turns one, with a second dose offered at about three-and-a-half, before they start nursery or school.

Dr Nikki Kanani, from NHS England, said: "If your child has missed a vaccination, please contact your GP practice to book an appointment as soon as you can to make sure they have maximum protection against disease."

Vaccines minister Maggie Throup added: "If you are unsure whether your child has had their full course of the MMR vaccine, check their red book or talk to your GP. The vaccine is safe, it will protect your child and their school friends and is very easy to access."

Unvaccinated teenagers and adults are eligible too.

Prof Helen Bedford, an expert from London's Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health, said: "It is never too late for children, young people and young adults to have their MMR vaccine and they can have a second dose even where there has been a long gap since the first."

It seems that the sea of discussion around the Covid vaccine in the UK and global media is now having hesitancy effects with other vaccines.

That’s ok, they don’t need any vaccines whatsoever, they should rely on their natural immunity and should be just fine!

Measles was a huge child killer at one time.

While the MMR jab causes 1/1,000,000 to suffer brain injury, that compares to 1/10,000 who will suffer it if they get measles, and of course the fewer taking MMR, the more likely their chance of measles (and hence brain injury) becomes.

So your kid it at least 100 times more likely to suffer brain damage if they don’t get the jab than if they do, and probably much worse odds than that.

But you dont know how the measles vaccines can also end up in a bad way, they can grow horns, become infertile, and all that other important/eye opening stuff I keep reading from KingKhanWC and his like minded fellows on this here forum.
The other day I heard this 39 year old guy in the US who was on the kidney donation list and is an anti vaxxer, is probably going to lose out on getting his replacement kidney and will probably die soon. But he wont get the covid vaccine, because he would much rather die free than live a slave with microchips in hi body and DNA altering medication flowing through his veins like some very educated British Pakistanis on this forum want you to believe.

Nothing but respect for such solid minded folks?

I've heard that if you mix lemon juice with hot water in the morning, and have a CBD vape then you can't get measles.

I've heard that if you exercise daily, eat healthy, take vitamin D, drink the mean green juice, then you can survive measles.

Also back when the measles vaccine was made the science was not that advanced.

None of the tweakers and drug abusers got COVID, and thats fairly well documented too. Maybe we should all start doing it. lol

Surviving measles is not the issue, only 3 out of a 1000 might die from it.

Its the pain and suffering that we want to avoid, especially in children.

This should make all Anti-Vaxxers (esp. mullahs in Pak) line up for the MMR shot.

Males infected with the measles virus can experience testicular inflammation that can permanently interfere with sperm production

Back in the day, when Walls ice cream had started in Pakistan, all the clerics were accusing it of having birth control doses in the ice cream :D

lol. The measles vaccinces are approved, Covid vaccines are not approved by your own FDA.

The reason why kids arent have having these vaccines is due to Covid being over exxagurated. Along with cancer screening and many other medical appoitments have been left behind because Covid was the priority.

If someone cant understand the difference between an MMR vaccine which was first introduced in the last 60's and the Covid vaccines which little to none long term data, they need help.

Pfizer COVID vaccine received full FDA approval Aug 21. Moderna was approved yesterday I believe.

I meant to write not all.

The point still stands measles vaccine has been around for 50+ years. The long term damage of Covid vaccines is not known.

Covid vaccines are also not required by most. All children should have the measles vaccines.

Only fools try to use this to prove everyone should have Covid vaccines.

wait what? COVID vaccines are not approved by the FDA?

Now I have read and heard everything. Thank you very much for coming and sharing your insightful views.

So now you are ok with measles vaccine? I have it on record you claiming that you do not believe in any vaccines and you never had any at all because you have exceptional natural immunity. You have never been immunized for anything or injected any sort of vaccine.

Polio vaccine, if people did not take polio vaccine because it had not accumulated the data for over 60 years.

The iron lungs.

Ive never had any but please show me where I stated I dont believe in any vaccines?

A child in year 10 knows there is a huge difference between a vaccine which has been around since the 60's compared to the Covid vaccines today which have no long term data.

ITs best you stop now before embarrasing yourself more and more.

Ok, so did said child in year ten wait for sixty years of data before deciding on the measles jab?

No vaccines ever?

Not even when you were a baby?

A healthy child of ten can wait a decade at least before taking the Covid vaccine. In 10 years we will have a lot more data.

Are you supporting babies being vaccinated against Covid?

I was in Pakistan as a baby for a couple of years so was never vaccinated.

Ive had measles and others such as Chicken pox, recovered quickly.

However If I had a baby I would get him/her vaccinated as we have a long term data for these vaccines and their potential damage.

Ok bro. :)

Agree with you, the infant vaccinations are important.

I think people are missing the point of this news.

So many kids havent had their vaccine because Covid was the priority. This is a disgrace, Covid should never had priority of this or other issues such as cancer screening etc. Big Pharma with governments have really made a mockery of the health systems.

Hilarious! It is a well known fact that many parents refuse the MRR vaccine for their children, are they dubbed anti-vaxxers? No.

Anyone who dies from measles/polio will have a valid cause of death [dies of] on the death certificate; and not some mumbo jumbo, [dies with] reason.

Measles/Polios have decades worth of data which stands up to scrutiny, meanwhile Covid vaccines barley have a year’s worth of data.

Covid is just a fancy way of saying, flu.

At least there is a silver lining, hygiene is now a priority!
