Religiously or non religiously ofc :moyo

Discovered it about a year ago and have to say it's like an upgraded version of a nap. Relieves stress and allows you to zoom out of life and petty problems and look at things from a very broad POV.

Personally it has made me calmer and mind less foggy.

Anyone else have experience with it? Asking for a dost. :asghar

Not as much as I should for enhanced mental health.

Playing music helps, I find.

Chuhay ki daal for dinner, mediation for relaxation. You’re a fascinating man, Suleiman.

there are many different types of meditation - which are you refering too

Was waiting for this question, didn’t wanna say everything in the OP.

I practice vipassana usually but have also recently tried Sufi based meditation which I’ve found to be more fulfilling. You focus on your breath in both but the latter you’re also doing it in remembrance of Allah.

never worked for him, i prefer dyna-phyc to control my subconcious - if your talking about relaxation then cue controlled deep muscle relaxtion has worked for me, its where you tense all your muscles one at a time and then relax, it can put you in total bliss.

I don't even know how to do it. Some explain the exercise and procedure.

so i have been experimenting with different meditations over the last month and i must say it makes a remarkable difference in your life in where you are most present and your awareness levels skyrocket, the voice in the back of your head dissappears or weakens and you can enjoy life again like when you were a kid.

but while meditating today i started having weird visions, some were normal day to day things but then something happened i saw someone, who i dont want to reveal but it was a mystic figure.

I have been doing two different types, normal meditations focusing on the breath and belly or dhikr reciting while eyes closed.

Just curious, what this mystic figure a mythological figure from any specific religion?

I have started doing Zikr since 2 days. Its normal up until now. Any tips would be appreciated.

Interesting. I've been doing it for about 4-5 months now consistently have not felt that, but did see a bright white light a few times with my eyes closed (room was dark too) whenever I was about a month into it. I do occasionally get random muscle spasms and strong twitches at times that jolt me awake, I've heard that is because you've been carrying a lot of stress and tension throughout the day and the body is releasing it then. It's like when you're dreaming and you fall down stairs or trip in the dream but your body reacts and you wake up in alarm.

But yeah I think the consistency has paid off and I've become more mindful overall.

Same as you, I've experimented with numerous types of meditations, and try to incorporate zikr into them as well. I respond the best to the guided visual imagery meditations I've found.

guided and visual meditations is what i need to do next, have heard from alot that using this in business and visualising your goals can accelerate you towards them, its like steroids for sucesss without the side effects.

i am using oura ring which also takes body measurements in mediation so it has alot of guided stuff in there.

I rediscovered religion two years ago, and became the servant of the Supreme Deity, Lord Shri Krishna, I started meditating and prostrating every morning and evening. Have got a dark prayer bump on my forehead and peace in my heart now.

Square breathing helps, to stop the internal chatter.

Could be demonic. I've heard that when you are in the state of trance induced by Dhikr, there are chances that the demons approach you. This is especially the case if you arent fulfilling the rest of obligations (salah etc.)

By the way, i just started Dhikr since last few days. Do you have any specific tips which maximize the spritual experience?

Can you please elaborate on what square breathing means?

The military do it to control fear.

1. Breathe all the way in on a count of five
2. Hold your breath for a count of five
3. Breathe all the way out for a count of five
4. Hold your breath for a count of five
5. Go to 1

I find it stops the mind chattering away and helps to become still.

Could have been that, having stopped all the intellectual overthought / mind chatter there was room for something useful to float up from the subconscious mind, something you need to know.

Is meditation related to yoga at all? I have become inflexible and stiff being a westerner, and have thought for some time now that yoga would be good for body and soul.

I would join a yoga class only I don't want to bump into any Indians there which would be kind of embarrassing. How messed up is it that I would feel more at home there if I was white? :(

Do Indians even do yoga in west, I never see a single desi in these yoga ‘studios’ in States atleast, so u r good .

Patience and observe after 1 week the execution of tasks how less of time it takes and how much more focus you have gained.

Actually that would be even more embarrassing. All the white folk would be expecting me to be super flexible like Dhalsim from StreetFighter, what a disgrace it would be to turn up stiff as Arnold Schwarzenegger on my first day. Maybe I should practice with some youtube videos first.

From what I’ve read, Sufi orders always recommend doing only the zikrs prescribed to you by the Sheikh, who will also then interpret your visions and dreams, if any. Certain names of Allah or certain Quranic verses incanted too often, or more often than you can handle in your current spiritual state, can lead to disconcerting effects, not the least of which are visions, which can be angelic or demonic.

There’s the infamous wird of death, which I’ve probably mentioned in other threads too. I’m sure we are all familiar with the verse:

كُلُّ نَفْسٍ ذَآئِقَةُ الْمَوْتِ

A wird of this verse, performed ad infinitum, reportedly induces the soul to temporarily depart the body and hover over it, but this only occurs once you’ve got a glimpse of the true terror of death. There are reports of people who weren’t ready but performed this wird nonetheless and went stark raving mad.

This may be an extreme example, but an example nonetheless. The zikr you’re doing needs to be one you can handle in your existing spiritual state.

Thanks a lot. Yes my primary motive is focus and clarity of mind. I need to get rid of a lot of clutter.

Yes thats what i have heard. Generally a Sheikh gives something to do Zikr. And also you need to be regular with Salah to maximise chances of a true spritual experience.
I know of a woman who committed suicide after she tried to do Zikr in order to get control over a Jinn. Such things are really risky. Always start with a mild Dhikr. Like Subhan Allahi wabihamdihi and Subhan Allahil Azeem.

Yep, it is called The Box breathing technique. Maybe it is different in the UK but US Navy SEALS do 4 seconds in, 4 seconds hold, 4 seconds exhale.

No meditation doesn’t need to be related to yoga. Yoga uses meditation techniques but meditation itself can be independent of yoga as there are numerous ways to practice it.

It is just a way of centering yourself and you can just as easily do it at home.

There are three things that I recommend when you get stressed out:

1) Taking a cold shower for 15-20 minutes. It literally makes me feel fresh.

2) Breathing exercise. Try to do it for 10-20 times a day and you can see the difference.

3) Dhikr. This is an Islamic concept so maybe non-Muslims may not want to do it. It is basically remembering God and uttering His praise over and over. It is a way to humble yourself in front of God.

meditation and yoga are different but related as the end goal is the same - peace of mind and soul.

in islam, if meditation is dhikr then yoga is salat.

as for yoga classes in the west there arnt really indians, hindu, buddists or toasist that you will find, most are just normal westerners trying to find peace while practising age old eastern religious practises, the reason for this is its been hyped up quite abit in the west in the last 10 years.

demons do not approach you - they are in your subconscious already there, the job is to take them out by becoming aware of them.

as for tips then what ever dhikr you choose to repeat, stay focused on it, after 10 mins when you do go into a state of trance like you mention your mind will wonder, but stay focused on your repeatitions, dont worry about the thoughts just dont attach yourself to them and let them past - the best tip i found was from tony robbins, think of them as clouds over your head and let them past, when they do new ones will pop up again dont judge them, dont label them dont think of them just let them past while you keep your focus on the repeatitions.

Regarding the zikr to capture a Jinn, I’ve read about it too in books on black magic: it entails reciting Surah Al-Jinn (predictably enough) next to a grave, preferably old and delapidated, for 40 consecutive nights. Few who’ve tried have succeeded, because if being in a graveyard for 40 nights straight wasn’t terrifying enough in and of itself, what makes it worse is the Jinn start appearing well before the 40 nights are done, the hallucinations and dreams that one gets are dreadful, and if this chilla is broken, one dies.

At least this one draws the line at mere recitation of an actual Surah. There are others downright disguising methods which would shock you and cannot be mentioned here.

this is true for all meditations and they advise teachers. However i belive the advise was more for old times where access to information was not there, these days you can just get on the net for an ocean of infomation. my best resources for this are special meditation forums or reditt where there will be very experienced meditators to help you.

also there is no guarantee that your teacher will guide you to the right path - this is the most difficulty you will find, its the same what happened with mirza ghulam ahmed a huge scholar who was deceived by his visions through meditation practices. Most teachers are there just to make money.

but when you are on some forums with specialists you have many teachers to help you.

as for what you are saying about this incident of death, then it seems like you are referring to astral projection, i dont think its actually true, your soul cant just leave your body without death, this is actually new age spirituality **.

Yes. I still remember the woman i talked about in my previous post. She had young kids. Her elder son was in school with me and i remember what he went through when his mother went missing for few days before her body was found. Better stay away from these things. Not safe at all.

I am not sure if its total **. Because i have had such an experience once. I have mentioned it in the jinn bhoot thread once but in real life i havent talked to anyone about it except this one time when i spoke about it to my friend only to receive ridicule. Long story short, i was in bed, woke up, walked out of my bedroom, saw my dad standing near a window in the corridor, walked down the stairs but realized something is wrong. The next moment i woke up in bed and realized i never got out of bed in the first place. Then i actually got up and out of my bedroom to see my dad there in the corridor near the window. He was even wearing the same clothes that i saw in my "vision". It felt so real that i can't explain it. However,I am open to any other reasonable interpretation of it because it spooks me out to this day when i think about it. It happened 4-5 years ago.

discipline is best which means choose a time and use it everyday, i usually do mornings and night, sometimes if im feeling it then in the evenings as an extra.

what your suggesting is time travel, because even in astral projection or if your soul leaves the body it can travel anywhere but stays in the present moment, however i dont believe in this theory because the soul is created as life progresses, just like your body goes from baby to adult, when you die is when the consciousness manifests into the form we call soul which is actually formless.

The mysteries of the soul are immense. How are we to know it can’t experience the future, or at least a vision of it?

The mysteries of the soul are immense. How are we to know it can’t experience the future, or at least a vision of it?

ofcourse and it deserves a thread of its own but i dont belive in what your saying, the soul for me is just the mind which after death manifests into a different sort of energy what we call soul, the body being the vehicle is just a training program were the mind is evolving with time and experiences and with death the mind transforms into the soul. Just like evolution applies to the species it also applies to the soul, this is how Rumi puts it:

I died as a mineral and became a plant,
I died as plant and rose to animal,
I died as animal and I was Man.
Why should I fear? When was I less by dying?
Yet once more I shall die as Man, to soar
With angels bless’d; but even from angelhood
I must pass on: all except God doth perish.
When I have sacrificed my angel-soul,
I shall become what no mind e’er conceived.
Oh, let me not exist! for Non-existence
Proclaims in organ tones,
To Him we shall return.

meditation of the breath
Bismillahi 'r-rahmani 'r-raheem

Saints say that a human being has in each day 24,000 breaths- in and out. In evey in-and-out breath, there is an action, whether good or bad.

That is why when you.... breathe in and breathe out.... breathe in with "Allah," breathe out with "Hu." Take in good action and cleanse yourself with that breath. Breathe in God's Attributes and Names meditating on the name of "Allah" Ta'ala. If that Name goes through your whole system, He is taking you into an unknown area, an area full of treasures that you do not know about. That is why you breathe out with "Hu."

Therefore meditate on the name "Allah" because God introduces His complete unknown Self through His Beautiful Name "Allah." When you do good actions, you do not know how much God is going to raise you. That is why it goes with "Hu," also.
Every breath in is an act, and every breath out is an act. Whether you breathe in or breathe out you expend effort, energy. So you are doing at least 24,000 acts every day. Think, then, whether these acts are like dead trees that have to be cut and thrown into fire or like living things that must be put into eternal area of heaven.

fighting depression with dhikr
Bismillahi 'r-rahmani 'r-raheem

May Allah keep us from the evil of our egos. As much as you are able, fight your ego. There is a different test each day; Allah Almighty is looking. If you go after your ego like a sheep, then it is dangerous. Keep to the right hand and go on, straight. Then there will be peace and satisfaction for you, here and in the Hereafer.

May Allah Almighty let all of you taste real faith. It is sweet, real faith's taste. When you taste real faith, you keep it, never losing it. The one who does not taste, he quickly leaves, quickly loses.

Which way makes you taste real faith? Dhikr; dhikr makes you taste the taste of iman. Say Allah…and you may taste the taste of faith. Whoever feels darkness and depression in his heart may say Allah, Allah, Allah…, and then nothing can stop his heart. When you say Allah, Allah, Allah…, there is no darkness in your heart. But if it should continue, keep your tongue silent and make your heart say Allah hu, Allah hu, Allah hu, haqq,* and you should hear the same dhikr, which we are now saying, in your heart.

Now listen! Three times Allah hu, haqq. Any time you may want to listen and keep your tongue silent, look at your heart, and you may, you must, hear that dhikr going on, never stopping. When you are listening, then darkness and depression are going away.

"Allah, Allah, Allah, truth (or reality)." This dhikr was transmitted by the Holy Prophet (s) to Abu Bakr as-Siddiq when the two of them hid in the cave of Thaur near Mecca during their flight from Mecca to Madinah.

Wa min Allah at Taufiq

I just found this and Wow, it works amazing to quite the mind and become present, you can use it before you do meditiation or when ever you want to be in the zone

breathing techniques start at 14:00 but advise you watch it all.

Thanks for posting this man, really resonated with it. I was diagnosed with severe anxiety disorder end of March and that’s when I initially started focusing on breathing from a day to day to hour to hour basis. At first I was like man how is such a small thing gonna calm the chaos in my mind but it works. You really center and ground yourself activating the relaxation response in your body.

I also think it’s important to breathe correctly. Too many people breathe into their chest, and just expand that when the right way is to breathe into your diaphragm like he shows here “breathe into your side ribs”.
