I to be very honest have not been very impressed with his reading of the squad, its weakness, the fact we have not groomed a single proper spinner barring Shadab and we are seeing the results now.

My biggest complaint against Mickey Arthur is that as a coach he does not read the game well at all. He cannot strategize in the long run, his decision making is strictly on a day to day basis. Did he seriously expect to go into the 2019 WC with Imad as a spinner?

What was the game plan leading up to the tournament? If you exclude the 2017 CT, he has nothing to show for himself, he is all talk in the press conferences with his fitness crusade and talk of playing a modern brand of cricket. I do not see any of it.

Mickey Arthur may have been the coach of that team but it was essentially the team Waqar left behind. Let's be honest, they were fortunate to win.

Team Waqar left behind? The 2017 CT squad was nowhere near Waqar's squad. Waqar is incompetent to the power cube. Atleast Arthur has tried new players but he has not tried anything new after wards and has developed favorites at the expense of the team. He should have axed players who were out of form or not improving after an extended run so that new players could have been given a go.

Mind boggling how we never tried any spinners. It's not like we're lacking in spinners, we're just not selecting them.

When you have a think tank who can't even at least try to rectify that problem then can you honestly expect anything else from them?

Somehow I suspect Mickey is not the only one to blame. Something else is going on.

I cannot believe how long they persisted with Yasir Shah in ODI's. Who knows, he might still take part in the next 2 ODI's.

Plus, the inclusion of Hasnain when he is clearly still raw and far from a finished product. Haris Rauf looked a lot better.

Many other dubious decisions have been made in the last few months.

I'm not giving credit to Waqar. Waqar Younis was and is a terrible head coach. I am though saying that Mickey had just come into the job. I think the past two years are more indicative of Mickey's impact on our one day cricket.

Hard to digest how someone who probably has never been in a sports team at the national level make such claims.

A very good coach, but stuck in a wrong job.

His resume was sound enough to convince CA hiring him as their first foreign coach in 150 years of history, so obviously his technical qualification can't be questioned, but I guess managing Asian teams are not his area.

Definitely not a team like PAK, where he'll have to deal with lots of ego, unworthy arrogance and unnecessary obstacle in his job. Dav was also a failure under PCB after a remarkable career with SRL, BD & NCA Bangalore, because his style was also - my way or highway and he got away with that in BCB or SLCB or IND Academy - that's not possible in a toxic place like PCB, and most foreign coach is bound to fail there or get sacked.

The issue i have with Mickey is his fascination with spin bowling allrounders. He should try specialists rather than constantly playing spin bowling allrounders that don't trouble the opposition

If only he knew spinners existed we would have won some of the matches we lost.

Has OP ever thought that Mickey isn’t the only calling the shots?

Game plan? How does the OP know that the team can’t execute plans given to them? Don’t blame others if the players are thick and dull.

Useless and pointless post by the OP.

Inzi, Sarfraz are equally to blame. They all have a say in the team selection.

Unfair to say Mickey Arthur has no say. His record as Karachi Kings coach is in front of everyone. It was Mickey Arthur's decision not to play spinners in the UAE even though the selectors gave him a few spinners, not play Junaid Khan in the Asia Cup until Inzi flew specially to the UAE to put his foot down, it was his decision not to give chances to Saad Ali and Abid Ali even though Inzi selected them in the squad, his decision to not groom a single spinner during his tenure

To be honest the PCB selection committee has given Mickey Arthur a free hand in his tenure.

Mickey is perfectly calling the shots. There is plenty of evidence where Inzi selected players in the squad but Mickey Arthur made the decision not to play them. Mickey Arthur's record as Karachi Kings Coach is in front of everyone.

Point is he has not delivered, he is carrying a team that has lost its last 20 plus ODI's. The selection of the WC squad looks very unbalanced. Not a single proper spinner was groomed in his tenure. He has to accept the criticism.

The same bowling lineup (Amir, Junaid, Hasan, Shadab, Imad and Hafeez) won you the champions trophy 2 years ago (yes, a freaking 2 years ago) on the same venue. If you want to play the blame game, blame the bowlers who should have improved after that tournament. But instead, they could not improve their performances when they should have been at their prime according to their age. It's the bowlers in the middle who need to get their act together and play according to the plan. You cannot bowl like trash against the No.1 team and the management cannot go out in the middle and play for you.

Regarding the spinners, almost all the pacers of PCT are tailenders with the bat. So keeping the conditions in mind they had to compromise on spinners to increase the batting depth. You cannot go with 5 pure bowlers in a XI in a tournamnet match.

You cannot play a one dimensional attack filled with 82-85 mph pacers, all the other teams have variety in their attack. What stopped Mickey Arthur from trying to groom a spinner who could bat? Why are the bowlers not improving, why is everyone's pace down? Have they been overtrained in the nets? Ultimately the coach will be held responsible

That 2017 CT was an abberation, the team's true ranking and the ranking of the other team's where consistency matters has ultimately stood the test of time.

Mickey Arthur has been as bad a coach as Waqar. I can't remember any Pakistani coach surviving with the results Mickey has produced. Since, CT, Pakistan losing a game against any decent team has become a norm. I have never seen a worst settled Pakistani team before. The bowling is at an all-time low and the batting is at least two levels behind all top teams.

If you take out the CT 2017 win, there is not much difference between Waqar's and Arthur's resume

What spinners do Pakistan have in domestic who can bat? Bilal Asif? Nawaz? Guess what, they are tried and tested failures.

Shaheen's pace is 85+, Hasan's pace 85+, Amir's pace is 85+ and Hasnain's pace is 90+. Only Junaid and Faheem are 82 to 85 mph pacers. But anyways, pace is overrated on this forum. You know the pace of Willy and Woakes but still they were the pick of the bowlers in 2nd and 3rd ODI respectively when the pitch was a batting paradise.

Why is everyone's pace down? You want to blame management for this? Let me give you an example. You are new to your job with a desire to achieve something. You do your hardwork to achieve that and one day you achieve that, you get so much praise that you lose your mind, your focus, your desire and ultimately you think that you have achieved everything. Now the level of your performance is not there and you think that you don't need that hardwork anymore. Your downfall starts here and the outside world will slowly come to now that you have declined. In this situation, who needs to be blamed? Is that YOU or your management? Management cannot do anything forcefully or play for that player. So I hope you got your answer.

For your information, Pakistan's limited overs ranking has actually improved after 2017. So, I don't know what you are talking about here.

Totally agree...

Failure to develop another spinner...Yasir Shah is not the answer!

Spinners like Zafar Gohar, Mohammad Asghar should have had plenty of games by now to develop and we wouldnt have suffered through Shadab being side lined.

I know Imad can bat but he is not your front line spinner...because errrm... he cant spin? He is ok as no 2 or even 3.

Too much reliance on Faheem as the 'golden boy' all rounder hasnt done the trick either...
.....Aamer Yamin should have had a few more opportunities or anyone else in Pak domestic cricket who fits the bill of a seaming all rounder.

Looking at England pitches, the pace option of Haris Rauf would have served more purpose than Hasnain, because of his ability to bowl yorkers at pace and a bit more nous about bowling on dry pitches.

If you take out the CT 2017 win, there is not much difference between Waqar's and Arthur's resume

Arthur should get zero credit for CT win as he was very new in that role. He played Azhar Ali as opener and Shehzad was only replaced with Fakhar when the former failed miserably.

You are not making sense. So we should select an all pace attack for the sake of it just because you feel our spinners in Pakistan aren't good enough. The same Bilal Asif everyone thought was not good enough picked up 5 wicket hauls against Australia and then New Zealand and while he might be an average spinner, it proved that you pick even an average spinner if the conditions demand it.

Pakistan has shot its self in the foot before the tournament even began by going in with such a one dimensional bowling attack which the opposition can easily plan against and counter.

Ofcourse our rankings have improved since Misbah ul Haq but do take a look at Pakistan's ODI record since the CT 2017 Win and specifically since the start of the Asia Cup 2018. In fact look at our ODI record from the CT win onwards exclude the minnows like Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe.

The players will be held accountable seperately but Mickey Arthur and co deserve to be shown the door on the assessment of their own performance. His record at Karachi Kings is in front of us, you take out the 2017 CT win, his resume is poor. A Pakistani coach with that record would have been shown the door. I am not even looking at his performance alone. Mickey Arthur is biased, he has one rule for his favorites and another for players he does not like and his likings/dis likings have hurt the squad selection badly.

The rankings only improved because:

1. CT fluke
2. SL became a minnow team in ODIs after the retirement of Sanga & Dilshan. Pakistan fully capitalized on it by whitewashing them.
3. Pakistan played bilateral series with WI and won it.

Not much has changed. India, England, South Africa, New Zealand, Australia are still comfortably better. Bangladesh is on-par if not better as proven by the Asia cup game. Only SL has become worse team than Pakistan. WI was and is worse than Pakistan, though a full strength WI team is stronger in both batting and bowling.

I think we shouldn't over react on this series because they are no 1 team they have beat india recently in odis so nothing to worry about however if they face us in knockout pak will wil there

Can you worry about 10 wins and 19 losses since Jan 2018? 5 of those 10 wins were against Zimbabwe. It also includes 2 5-0 losses and losses in the Asia Cup.

Okay lets start with that nz series
Pak almost went with the ct lineup
There were bad starts every game and we got beaten by swing bowling.
In asia cup we went with 4 pacers i mean wth and offcourse with hafeez gone, batting was thin. And we were spinner short mickey and think tank thought our pacers are worldclass and they will run through lineups in asia cup.
But they failed. And we were spinner short there and in sa we did okay and finally we have found right combination with batting our top 4 is stablize. And sooner we will click iam sure u will se us through semis

See my last post

All excuses none helps as Pakistan are still losing. How are they going to turn around things when they are playing with the same people who played in those series? Probably one or two like Azhar Ali have been discarded but the others are practically the same.

They have started to drop malik and play haris at his spot is biggest positive and with asif finding form we have lineup.that can consistently score 300 hundre unless hafeez malik come into play and pitches will be directed by icc so there will be bit more balance between bat and ball. So pak has got good chance.
Considering we play our best combo we will reach semis

Considering the problem has been the bowling, what is the correction there? ICC cannot do much when the weather is dry and hot as it has been in the UK over the past 2 summers. We are not going to get too many wickets with grass on it. ICC obviously wants games to go the full 100 overs. Also Pakistan are scoring big only because of the pitches currently in England, if there was more balance England can still score 300+ but I don't think Pakistan can chase it.

Our problem in this series is bowling
But if there was something in pitches pak bowlers would have outperformed england in bowling.
Icc will leave something for bowler it will not be that dull as we think.

Please go back to 2015 WC and see how good those pitches were for bowling. 300 was getting scored for fun then. So, no ICC isn't going to make any extra efforts to bring any balance between bat and ball.

The biggest problem for me under him is we have not had a single spinner, Shadab is all right but he should not be our number 1 and only spinner. In the past we've had Ajmal, Afridi, Hafeez, Saqlain, Mushtaq, all who were great spinners. Hafeez and Afridi may not have been the world class but Afridi regularly picked up wickets and barley every got carted around. I wish we had groomed Zafar, but we played him that one time against England in UAE in 2015 and after that dropped him. He really could of been our number one spinner and with him bowling in tandem alongside Shadab it would be really hard for teams to score off of us in the middle overs, not to mention the wickets they would pick.

The pitches were not this flat in Champions Trophy, I just hope we don't see wickets like the one in the last match.

The wickets in the champions trophy were flat but because of dry weather and heat, it was natural variation. That will happen in this world cup as well at the fag end of the tournament. Initially all the wickets will start of a flat ones. When we get to the business end of the tournament you might get a few which are slow and helping spinners. In CT in the initial part of the tournament, if you see all the games were high scoring 300+ was chased quite a few times, England chased 300 easily against BD and SL did the same against India. Only towards the end we saw a few wickets helping spin and getting slow.

To be honest the PCB selection committee has given Mickey Arthur a free hand in his tenure.

Spin play (either way) isn't Arthur's strength for sure. But, he is very good at developing fundamental skills of a player and operating with pacers which should have suited PCT as well, but both he & PCT is royally screwed by those UAE venues. If UAE remains PAK's home for longer term, I would suggest PCB should be careful before appointing their next HC - none one capable is available in PAK, Indian's won't join (& PCB won't be able to afford top Indian coaches), but may be Hathura or Mahela won't be a bad choice. Arthur would have done much better job had PCT's makeshift home venue been shifted to UK or SAF. PSL is also played in mostly in UAE, hence no wonder he'll struggle there as well.

More than Arthur, the biggest problem for PCT is that cricket God's forsaken venues of UAE - I am damn sure no one ever would have believed that PAK batting can post back to back 360 ish totals, but that happened .... and now bowlers are struggling to cope up with true wickets after manually ploughing on those dust beds for best part of their life, where new ball and extra pace are curse for fast bowlers.

PCB's selection commentate is morally corrupt, ethically biased, professionally dishonest, mission wise radar less, vision wise blind and capability wise incompetent - that's bitter truth and I can post couple of epics to stand on my ground, won't because I don't have 400+ International games playing experience, neither my country is World Champions. This guy Ul Haq took almost entire PAK squad to ICL as their agent to play a fixed league knowing that these players' International career could be over. BCCI wanted to erase ICL from history hence PAK players got out of trouble, otherwise each one would have faced ICC anti-corruption unit for that league, and a possible lengthy ban.

On top of that, this guy was the most powerful Captain since Imran .... allowed 3 debuts in his 4 years, when PAK won 2 U19 WCs during his tenure. And, he has categorically destroyed careers of 3 non Lahore based cricketers (more than Lahore, it's out of his cult group), who would have been MVP of current PCT - Mo Sami, Asim Kamal & Yasir Hameed .... had YK not been that good, he would have been the 4th one and I can name at least a dozen PAK players who could have made a decent International team themselves - never got their chances between that cursed period of 2003 to 2007. One should remember that, it was the period PCB did great to hire one of the best modern coach ever, yet the decline of PAK cricket started from that period, including dirty off-field politics, grouping and I know who is to blame most here.

It's only possible for an organization like PCB to appoint such a person at that package for such an influential role. Arthur is trying to find a breathing space without brawling into a fight that he'll always loose - still might leave unceremoniously. After that, with my little capacity, I'll definitely escalate his name as the Technical Director of BCB (But not as National Coach :( ).

Hope, no one will get upset here - bitter truth hurts, more so from a foreigner.

If you ask Mickey this question, then he will be the first person to admit that there is a problem. But no one works as hard as Mickey to overcome that part.....

P.S. This is how MA speaks in press con's

Happy Birthday to Mickey! Hoping for a special day (not in negative terms) for him as we play the 4th ODI

He can be a good gym instructor not a cricket coach.
Playing with 1 spinner in UAE has been one of his biggest blunders.
Playing bits n pieces has never worked in cricket for any team in any era but he seems to have obsession with guys like faheem.

Lost 10 in a row but the batting order never changes no frontline spinner fast bowlers struggling on flat pitches what exactly is he doing incompetency at it's finest here.

Just talking in press conferences. I think he has accepted that the PCB will not retain him after the WC or he doesn't want to stick around anymore.

Why did the coach allow Imam to come out to bat? Complete stupidity. He could have got seriously injured in a non-crucial game. And it probably led to losing the match, at least tailenders would be able to swing a bit at the end, instead of Imam who could only defend with the injury.

Dunno what we're trying do create some hero story. Or probably maybe they thought 340 or so would be defendable anyway so no harm in this stunt.

he came out only to give a message to Abid Ali that you can't take my place even if I am injured it's my uncle's team not yours.

Both Mickey and Waqar are poor in Odis but Waqar was better in tests

And Mickey has more power and authority than Waqar ever had

Both Mickey and Waqar are poor in Odis but Waqar was better in tests

Actually quite true.

Actually, even in ODIs we weren't as bad as we are now. We used to win some series here and there, even overseas.

Tests - we were really good.

Under Arthur it's a total disaster and lack of any IQ.

You can get rid of Mickey and Azhar and appoint Waqar and Dav or whoever else but the results won't change. The team aren't very good and haven't been for a long time. We have been generally poor in all WC's since 99 and no amount of changes in coaching is going to change that.

Poor selectors
And overall poor players

We've had players come and go

Perform then not perform and drop
When average players like Hafeez/Malik are still in the side

It's trouble
Bowling has gone back towards the likes of 2013-15

Toothless

33) Failure as KK's coach in PSL 4

34) Whitewash against Australia in the ODI series 5-0

35) Whitewash against England in the ODI series 4-0

Make of it what you wish, if you take out the CT 2017 victory, what does he really have to show for himself. Just look at the above and analyze how Pakistan has really done against the top sides like England, Australia, South Africa, New Zealand and India under his watch. Heck the guy even lost to Sri Lanka in UAE. We had to fight out of our skins for that victory against a weak WI team.

If someone like Waqar, Javed Miandad had such a record or string of results to show for themselves during their tenure, they would have been shown the door in a heart beat. For me Mickey just talks in press conferences but does very little, we still have the lower order hitting problems at the death when he first started his tenure and he still persists with his blue eyed boy Imad Wasim.

It will be scandolous if the PCB decides to stick with him after the ODI WC

Markhor, I think it's time to just call out Mickey Arthur for what he really is.

Worse than Waqar! Totally inept and clueless.

We not going for any proper spinner is entirely his idea and strategy. He loves the useless Imad Wasim, plus Malik too.

Also, he doesn't realize where 350 is a PAR score and where it's a good score.

Mickey is only as good as we allow him to be.

I feel PCB has given him insecurities and forced team selections upon him...

How so? He has pretty much been allowed to pick his blue eyed boys consistently. Have the Karachi Kings done the same? I bet Cricket Australia did the same

Mickey is a good man and i wish him well but hes not the right man to be incharge of pak cricket team. Does not understand the importance of genuine spinners. Has a western mentality of playing alrounders. Thats all good if you have decent alrounders but we dont apart from hafeez, the rest are bits and pieces players.

Is Mickey Arthur the worst coach Pakistan ever had?

There is a similar thread for Sarfraz. Why not have one for Mickey?

As a Pakistan cricket fan, I do not remember anytime in my 25 years of watching Pakistan cricket that a settled team has performed so poorly over a long period of time.

Pakistan did have some lows, like the 2007 world cup or failing to cross 100 in each inning in a test against Australia, but they were either short lived or isolated incidents.

I do not remember a losing streak like this one where the team gets a drubbing from all decent teams and lose to even minnows like Afghanistan. The same team even managed to lose an ODI to Zimbabwe which was not even a club level team.

The poor performance is not just isolated to ODIs. Even in Tests, this team managed to get whitewashed by SL at home and lost to NZ at home after several decades. I must say that under Mickey, Pakistan has been left behind by all Asian countries.
India won a test series in Australia. When India toured South Africa, they had a very close series which could have gone either way. Pakistan got blanked 3-0 in both Australia and South Africa. India demolished South Africa in ODIs, Pakistan lost that as well. SL created history by defeating South Africa in South Africa. Bangladesh beat Pakistan in Asia cup to play the final.

Did any coach survive with these results in the Past? The likes of Whatmore, Lawson, etc. were shown the door for far less. Coaches have been terminated for just one big loss in the past. How has Mickey survived simply amazes me.

So, the question is do you think Mickey is the worst coach Pakistan ever had?

Lets judge when the real tournament starts Ys pakistan have been on a horrible run but youve got to take the warm up as it is - a warm up

If pakistan doesnt perform at least adequately he should hav no qualms if his position is questioned after the tournament

Batting failure - blame Grant Flower
Bowling failure - blame Azhar Mahmood
Fielding failure - blame lack of fielding coach
Tactics failure - blame Sarfraz
Selection failure - blame Inzy
Players failure - blame players

What is Mickey paid for then if he has no role in anything?

Pakistan is the most consistent it has ever been under him. Consistently losing that is

For me the problem starts and ends with the captain. The captain is a guy who believes in taveez and ganda rather than skill or strategy. We will never be a top team with this attitude stemming from the captain of the side. Its shocking he is captaining the wc even after the Asia Cup embarssment.

CT Trophy and beating India by 180 runs trumps everything for them

Umm no he is actually one of the most successful coaches you have had. But it does look like his joyride is coming to an end.

Lol at this incompetent con artist. I bet even a local Pakistani coach may end up with having better tactics and selection/team composition decisions than this guy. Heck Sarfaraz looks more at ease and more in command with local coaches like Moin Khan in Quetta Gladiators.

i agree with this. i would take a local head coach complimented by the best available trainer, fielding coach, modern batting coach, and also local bowling coaches for fast/spin (other than azhar).

only good foreign coach we had with good results (barring world cup) was bob woolmer. rest have been useless.

Nice thread to divert blame away from that garbage selector and protector of TTFs Inzamam, who does'nt care Pakistan wins or loses just that his family and friends remain in the team.

Is selector competent who has not built a batting side instead used his position to play his nephew and selfish azam in the team.

I want to burn my tickets for the WC :misbah

It’s time for him to be moved on after the WC. I like him but his excuses and lack of input is becoming tiresome.

Pack your bags.
Doesn't matter what happens next but the whole trio of Arthur Azhar and flower should be out:trump:trump:trump:trump

Ok lets say this team/squad selected on nepotism & personal liking disliking, but can you name some players who are capable but sitting back in pakistan?

I don't think Mickey Arthur commands much respect, because he can barely contain himself or his emotions.

He bloods youngsters well & offers them a chance at the highest level. He is not a good tactician, neither is he a great-reader of the game. In fact, Graeme Smith hid a lot of his flaws when he was the coach of SA. The Saffers of Smith, AB, Steyn, Kallis era were a top-notch side anyway.

Mickey Arthur oversaw the disastrous tour of india & a 4-0 thrashing when he was the coach of Australia. His only answer to defeats was ... yes, you guessed it right, trying out 'different combinations'.

Initially he promoted youngsters, then grudgingly brought back veterans like Clarke, Watson, Johnson. Still he couldn't reverse the fortune, remained hapless & clueless the entire time, right until the moment he was sacked.

Still I think mickey is 1000 times better than divisive figures like Waqar, who picked the likes of Nasir Jamshed, Ehsan Adil, yasir shah, sohaib maqsood, rahat ali for his 2015 WC voyage .

The squad that Inzamam has selected has the best available players in the country. This team should be good enough to at least beat teams ranked lower than Pakistan in ICC ODI rankings. The combo of Mickey and Sarfraz is not working at all. There have been too many poor tactical decisions as well as lack of motivation for players.

Good point. I agree that Sarf+Mickey combo not working for a long time now. Sarf has become a yes man and not playing his team according to his will or he is losing it big time.

ROFL not best available call them the only ones available for the last 3 years who are being pushed in using various excuses.

What about Hafeez and Malik combo, are they the best available?

What tactic is useful with likes of Malik and Imam? And what target can be set with person like selfish azam who is more interested in his 100 than the team total.

Inzamam has destroyed Pakistani team he for 3 years like a parasite has been using his position for finding excuses to bring discarded garbage from 2016 back into the side which he has done again, and will continue to do it unless is sacked for his shameless performance. No batting talent introduced which could look like going the distance. Due to pressure from Sethi to take PSL pperformers he has been pushing in T20 players in ODI and test format.

I am not sure what the Pakistani dressing room is like right now but under Mickey Arthur the Australian dressing room was just horrible, who can forget the homework saga and the numerous clashes between the players like Clarke vs Katich, Clarke vs Hussey, Clarke vs Watson.

He is a con artist who got booted out by each of his previous employers. His career was floundering and the Pakistan job must have come as a God-send for him.

Successfully conned three cricket nations. That has to go down as a big achievement.

I think the only reason Mickey Arthur succeeded in holding onto his Pakistan job is because it is a side filled with predominantly younger players, the only seniors he has had to deal with were Misbah ul Haq, Younis Khan, Hafeez and Malik.

A 40 years old Hafeez is still a better batsman and bowler than Shadab. Please provide name of one world class player who Inzy is keeping out of team.
