Mickey Arthur's Pakistan stint (Part 2) - What will ensure success?

Mickey Arthur has had a mixed bag with Pakistan so far. Some outstanding achievements and some equally big disappointments.

Team is No 1 in T20s but no 6 and 7 in ODIs and Test.

Strenghts
He brings discipline, focus and rigor to team preparations and plans. He is also very clear on what he needs and there is no absence of communication within the team. Manages up with PCB very well.

Weaknesses
His areas of opportunity are innovation, aggression and never say die spirit. Having plan B in close situation and dropping non-performers faster than he does will help him a long way.

Leading up to World Cup 2019, these are the 5 factors that I believe will maximize his strengths and make up for his weaknesses (I am disregarding fixing domestic structure or A/U19 teams etc because that is not a 2 year thing):

1. A strong and performing captain: Sarfaraz is a strong captain who is clear on what he expects of the team. As long as his performances keep up, it will give Mickey the headspace to plan other areas. If Sarfaraz's performance level drops, Mickey will be lost. As happened in NZ. A strong deputy will help too. 7/10
2. Unequivocal support of the Board: - Mickey was abandoned by Cricket Australia when the chips were down for him. So far, he has had great support from the PCB which is helping him make some tough calls. 9/10
3. An innovative mind in the Coaching staff: I feel there is a bit of a muchness in Pakistan's cricket - again when chips are down. Mickey, Azhar Mahmood, Mushtaq are not great thinkers of the game. Someone who can help Sarfaraz do new things and try new methods will bring new dimension to the team. 5/10
4. A Talisman: Pakistan cricket is crying out for an outstanding player that opposition fears. I really thought Sharjeel was it but Najam took him away. Mickey has relied on the A B Devilliers, Steyn's and Kallis's of this world in the past to great success. There is some good talent about now and I can see him getting excited with the likes of Shadab and Hassan. It will allow him to experiment more. 6/10
5. Self Belief: I believe we haven't seen the best of Mickey Arthur. He came with baggage and it has taken time for him to build his confidence back. Only now he is becoming more assertive with seniors and selectors. The fact he can talk openly about his failures shows growing inner strength. Just like his players, he needs to shed inhibitions and go for broke. 7/10

There is a campaign going on against Mickey in electronic media for quite some time now. Almost every other sports journalist and anchor-person has an agenda against him so it will be difficult for him to stay if we face another 5-0 type drubbing that we witnessed in NZ.

Coaches like Waqar and Whatmore used to lose series after series at UAE (in LOIs). So far under Mickey we have won all of our home series although we have been poor in tests. Tour of Ireland and England will be important for Mickey as success there will give him massive boost and leverage to bring about changes he wants in the team.

The fans will be willing to excuse his failures in overseas Test and ODI series as long as he performs exceptionally well with the team in ENG next year.

He will definitely survive.

He has a 5-0 ODI whitewash against SL, CT win, Test series draw in ENG, Test series win in WI, and plenty of opportunities to increase his resume.

He seems to be a long-term option that the PCB has chosen and it is reaping the benefits currently with a reinvigorated LO’s team. The Test team is in dire state but that is because it is untested.

Needs to be more involved in team selection. I'm sure he wants to go with youth and ditch the oldies but Inzi has his favourties.

If Mickey manages to win us the WC, then he will go down as our best LOI coach ever. However, the jury is still out on some of his decisions, such as persisting with the likes of Shehzad, Azhar, Hafeez and to a lesser extent Malik.

I do like where we stand as an ODI/T20 team now, and it is much improved than the Misbah/Azhar-Waqar era where every match we were competing for respectful defeat rather than victory. Under Mickey we have seen an improvement in our fielding standards, heck imo Pakistan was one of the best fielding sides in the CT, we were also trading punch for punch with NZ in the fielding department. We have also seen a substantial improvement in player fitness (we still have a few who need to tighten their belts )

PSL has a habit of throwing a couple of good names every year and the onus is on Mickey to take these names and run with them. I'm very excited about the prospect of Hussian Talat, who imo is a lot more versatile player than tuk tuk mr. selfish ton Babar. However, initial statements suggest that Mickey thinks of Talat as a batting alrounder rather than a proper batsman, and a small part of the blame lies with Talat himself. He is good enough to be in the side as a batsman but he was so showcase his lollipop bowling to make a name as an alrounder.

Mickey is too stubborn at times. I can forgive him for going in with one spinner against Sri Lanka one time but to make that mistake twice in a row is unforgivable.

He has now the raw material to work with. But he haa to be more decisive on youth vs experience. Pakistan's younger players are fearless because they are not used to defeat in county colors yet. Associating with Malik, Hafeez may douse their fire.

He hasn't really experimented enough to find a second spinner with Yasir Shah. From the looks of it, he has found Shadab for LOIs but for tests?

When the playing 11 are technically deficient for tests in home but especially away conditions there isn’t much a head coach can do. England in 2018 is about to be 2-0 to England. Early summer in Uk with moving ball without misbah and younis will mean our only two decent batsmen will be azhar and asad. Not much mickey can do about our batsmen suddenly being able to bat on green wickets. Even with younis and misbah it wasn’t easy to draw the last series.

Mickey is here to stay. I just hope he is able to get the bunch of guys he wants and nothing stupid like the Sharjeel incident happens again.
