Minorities being hated for sports loss, Mohammad Shami the latest victim

Minorities get abused in India only because of bigotry against minorities, or more particularly, muslims in India. Using Hasan ali as an example doesn't really work out because Hasan Ali is a muslim too and so it's pointless saying he wasn't abused based on his religion.

We dont know who owns these accounts.

Some posters here claimed the same thing about the tweets vs Shami. With huge populations, it's impossible that there won't be a few who look at things through bigoted lenses. When Shami came out to bat the next game, the mostly-Indian crowd gave him a rousing ovation. But that doesn't mean all Indians will continue to admire or support him and not drag his religion into coloring their views.

More over Hasan Ali was singled out by his own captain and some ex-cricketers. What else do you think the ordinary fans will react like?

Danish Kaneria lost many games for Pakistan, I don't recall anyone ever targeting his faith. If anything, most people didn't know or cared about what his religion even though he was open about his Hindu identity.

Yeah no, that's because social media was barely a thing when he was playing.

lmaoo what are you talking about? he was routinely ostracized for his faith. both by fans and his own teammates. he is just lucky twitter wasnt around during his playing days or it would be open season on him

Well you never heard of any important Pakistani public figures and political orgs calling for him to move to India unlike what happens in India where almost every single Muslim celeb has been told to go to Pakistan just because they occasionally (very rarely) choose not to be sheep and mildly criticize the Indian govt.

Stop lying lmaoo. He's never been insulted by fans for his faith and most don't even know or care if he's Hindu, he was Inzy's favorite spinner despite being a mediocre bowler and with no other redeemable qualities.

This brings us to the next question - Are there any hindu celebs in Pakistan for them to get ostracised like the Khans in India. Everytime I ask this question, I'm reminded of one fashion designer and one chief justice. What stops the minorities in Pakistan from ascending to fame like in India and why are they disempowered?

Islamophobia may be pretty high in India, but it's also true that muslims are some of the most decorated celebrities in India as not just actors, but film directors, music directors, choreographers, producers, etc., and this is just the film industry. You see so many players of muslim faith in the IPL, is there even a single hindu cricketer in the PSL?

It's an apples to oranges comparison, Non-Muslim minorities are only 3-4% of the population in Pakistan while in India non-Hindus are 20% of the population, so of course you're going to have 5x as many minority celebs. Your question is just as disingenuous as asking how many Muslim footballers have played for Mexico or how many Hindu actors do they have in Russia.

Can you prove your claims that he was regularly insulted by teammates because of his faith.....

Which is why I didn't ask how many hindu players in the Pakistani national team, but in the entire PSL which will have a larger pool of domestic cricketers.

Let's have it your way. Sikhs are just 1.7% of the Indian population, yet you have so many Sikh celebrities just in the film industry like Dharmendra, Sunny Deol, Bobby Deol, Arijit Singh, Diljit Dosangh, Honey Singh, etc. How do they find their way to fame in India despite being in a smaller proportion than the proportion of Hindus in India. In Pakistan, you need the ulema and the supreme court to give permission to the hindus to construct a single temple in Islamabad. There is no doubt that islamophobia is pretty high in India which I would never deny, but the empowerment of respective minorities in both countries are not comparable. You don't see the same kind of anti minority sentiment in Pakistan simply because minorities are barely empowered in Pakistan.

It's why I chuckle when Pakistani posters say Pakistan is far more tolerant than India and people are free to celebrate the victory of arch rivals over them. Do you think any hindu in Pakistan would have the balls to celebrate an Indian victory over Pakistan while living in Pakistan? They barely get by their lives as it is, never mind doing so like it happens in India.

One example, In this clip on PTV , shoaib akhtar touched upon this but he restrained himself -

He was basically saying -
Hindu has won you the series, ab bol
A player told him why is he taking food from here.
He further went to say, baat khul jaayegi rehne dein.
Doc agreed with him too.

That’s literally one statement by Shoaib Akhtar who has a tendency to make up stories for views.

The funny thing is that all fans doubted Shoaib credibility and say he’s a liar and makes up stories. They said this when he says Sachin was scared of him or that he was offered millions of dollars to fix etc etc but one time he says this for views and Shoaib akhtars words becomes more reliable than word of Ram for these Indians..

Give other examples.

What do you mean give other examples.
Im not your employee over here.

What is the guarantee you will not trash my next example as you have done with my previous example.

Please dispel the first example

Let me clarify this for you.

1. One person saying that Kaneria was disrespected for religion is not a good way to make your point and does not demonstrate a large scale malaise as it seems to be in your mind.

2. You may need to check statements of other Pakistan cricketers who denied this.

This topic on one person Kaneria was discussed in detail in previous threads.

Read this and take it in.

Hassan Ali's wife has categorically rejected tweets from an impostor Twitter account, clarifying that neither she nor her husband or daughter have received threats from the people of Pakistan.

Hassan Ali's wife, Samiya Arzoo, took to Instagram to share the screenshot of a fake Twitter account

In a series of tweets, the user, claiming to be Hassan Ali's wife, tagged the prime minister and the PCB to take action against threats being issued to the fast bowler, his wife and daughter.

Samiya Arzoo clarified that it was a fake account, requesting fans to report the impostor account.

"So many tweets circulating from this fake account that I, Hassan and my daughter are getting threats from the people of Pakistan, which is absolutely wrong," she wrote in an Instagram story.

"Instead, we have seen tons of support. Please don't believe any such statements and don't follow any such accounts on Twitter pretending to be me.

"I am not on Twitter. Please report the accounts claiming to be me," she added.

This whole social media, freedom of speech is getting out of hand due to the sheer amount of abuse.

Going forward I fear even forums such as this might have to verify your identity, (something which the Australian government is already proposing).

Obviously the amount of Indians are the major culprits as they have a majority of the world's population. Social media Platforms need to be moderated better and countries like India need to start educating on how to behave online.

You can never stop social media abuse. Most of the hate Hasan Ali received yesterday was from normal young adults who were invested in the match and not trolls. Social media gives a platform to publish whatever anyone thinks in his mind and censoring social media is basically like asking to censor people's thoughts.

The more shameful thing is media highlighting and reporting on abusive tweets by every random troll. That's only giving more attention and screen space to abusive trolls and perverts. Moreover, this unnecessarily hurts the celebrities by amplifying abusive tweets, which otherwise would've been lost in the ocean of social media.

‘You win as one, go down as all’: Ravi Shastri’s strong words on online abuse hurled at Shami after Pakistan loss

Former Indian head coach Ravi Shastri criticised the online abuse of bowler Mohammed Shami, which came after India's 10-wicket defeat against arch rivals Pakistan in the 2021 T20 World Cup. Shami was subjected to online abuses after the Team India seamer finished the contest conceding 43 runs before he could complete his four-over quota.

Since the incident, the entire Indian cricket fraternity rallied behind the seamer and former head coach Shastri insisted that the incident was ‘ridiculous’, adding that Shami has been ‘fabulous’ for India over the past five years.

"I don't read (the news). I heard about it later and that was ridiculous. Mohammed Shami, for me, is a champion. He is one of the real integral parts of the team for the last five years. In all our wins overseas or in India, Shami, Ishant (Sharma), Jasprit (Bumrah) and Umesh (Yadav) have been absolutely fabulous,” said Ravi Shastri on NDTV. "To single out someone from the game is ridiculous. It’s like someone saying that Pakistan lost the game because someone dropped a catch (in the semi-final against Australia). It's ridiculous. It's a team game, it happens.”

Shastri also lauded Virat Kohli for standing up for Shami during a press conference after the match. Kohli, who led the Indian T20I team for the final time, had spoken in length about the vile abuse towards the player while insisting that the team stood “200 per cent” behind Shami.

"One message that we had in our team right from the beginning - you win as one and you go down as all. There is no finger-pointing in this team,” Shastri said.

"Virat was brilliant in the press conference where he stood up for Shami. Hats off to him.”

Shastri added that Kohli had not discussed addressing the incident with him before the press conference.

So am guessing he wont be abused now because he's done well for India today?

5 wicket haul in a South Africa away Test should be enough in any circumstances — we shall see !

More impressive for me was not his 5-for but he also picked his 200th test wicket @ career average of 27.10 and strike rate of 50. Those are huge numbers, specially since Indian cricket has never been associated with good fast bowlers.

The hate is pathetically uncalled for.

Unfortunately in social media, lunatics and idiots get more coverage than sane voices. And secondaly, its possible to doctor social media. Call it an exact combination of two for whatever happened during world cup. I am sure there are enough lunatics in my country who could abuse a player because of religion and then as was clearly proved that a lot of Pakistani accounts played it's role in amplifying that abuse to increase the chaos and Hate. Be that it may be, in a country of 1.3 bn, some 100s tweets don't define what majority feels about players like Shami, which is that he's simply a champion bowler.

Seems hate is the byword for some on Twitter from what appear to be India:

Here is Saj's tweet about Pakistan U19s - just about a group of young cricketers he met.

Great to meet the Pakistan Under 19 squad. A very friendly and humble group of lads. Now read the replies.

India's veteran pace bowler Mohammed Shami has slammed trolls as neither real fans nor real Indians in his first comments since being subjected to vitriolic online abuse following the defeat to Pakistan at the T20 World Cup. Shami, 31, became the main target of abuse after India were thrashed by their arch-rivals last October on their way to an embarrassingly early exit from the marquee tournament. Cricket clashes between India and Pakistan frequently heighten tensions between the neighbours.

After's India's loss, thousands of hate messages flooded social media, including Shami's Instagram account, calling him a traitor and alleging he had taken money to throw the game.

In an interview with the Indian Express on Monday, Shami said those who trolled him were neither "real fans nor were they real Indians".

"When people with unknown social media profiles or even one with a few followers point fingers at someone, they don't have anything to lose," the paceman said.

"For them nothing is at stake because they are nobodies... we don't need to engage with them."

Shami added that he did not need to prove his loyalty to India to anyone.

"We know what we are, we don't need to say what India means to us because we represent the country and fight for the country.

"So we don't need to prove anything to anyone by saying or reacting to such trolls."

Since making his debut in 2013, Shami has taken 209 wickets in 57 Test matches with a strike rate of nearly 50.

He is currently sidelined due to a wrist injury, but added that the present Indian pace attack was the best ever.

"With the kind of Test match bowling we have now, I don't think we ever had such a period in our cricketing history," he said.
