Misbah-ul-Haq and Luke Ronchi Join Islamabad United as Coaches

The Duo Join Saeed Ajmal As Part Of Home Grown Coaching Staff

Lahore, 4 December 2019 – Islamabad United, the most successful franchise in Pakistan Super League history, are pleased to welcome Misbah-ul-Haq as part of the Islamabad United family in the role of Head Coach. The franchise is also pleased to announce the appointment of Luke Ronchi, a senior member of the playing squad over the past few seasons, as assistant coach along with his player-mentor role.

Misbah was the captain of United over the first three seasons, leading the team to two PSL championships during that span. He is also the most successful Test captain in Pakistan’s history, winning more Tests than anyone in the country’s history, culminating with leading the team to number 1 in the ICC Rankings.

Luke Ronchi represented both Australia and New Zealand in international cricket and has been part of the Islamabad United squad since HBL PSL 3. He was the Assistant Coach with the New Zealand ODI side which reached the final of the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup. He will also serve as part of the coaching staff with the Central Stags team this season in his home country’s domestic season. He will take over the same role at Islamabad United, in addition to being a player.

The duo join Saeed Ajmal, part of the 2016 ISLU championship winning team and now serving as spin bowling coach, to form a strong home-grown coaching core which has made the successful transition from players to coaches for United.

Regarding the move Ali Naqvi, the owner of the franchise said, “From the start one of our goals has been to promote from within. There has been a dearth of Pakistani coaches coming through, and we have aimed from the first season of the PSL to plan towards evolving experienced players into coaching. We are happy to have one former and one current player as members of the ISLU family join the coaching staff. We have already had Saeed Ajmal as part of the staff, and his success in that role has only confirmed our beliefs. Misbah and Luke’s achievements in setting up the identity of the franchise as the most successful one in the league are one of the keys for why Islamabad United is where it is.”

“With the PSL moving completely to Pakistan this year we’ve been preparing since the end of PSL 4 to evolve our franchise accordingly with more focus on developing and giving chance to our local talent. Prior to this we have had Saeed Ajmal be part of our coaching staff, and that is the first step in our long-term goal of members of this family transitioning from playing to coaching.”

Regarding his new role Luke Ronchi said, “I look forward to working at Islamabad United in this new role. I will look to mentor and coach the guys where needed. I love how this team is run like a family, and this constant evolution is a journey I wish to contribute on. I am particularly excited to be in Pakistan for the whole of the PSL. I’ve been to the country thrice now with United and it’s something that I am truly looking forward to.”

Regarding his appointment Misbah-ul-Haq stated, “I am humbled with the opportunity that Islamabad United have offered me, and I take this role as a massive responsibility. I know that this franchise has championship expectations but I am absolutely ready for the task at hand.”

“At Islamabad United we have some of the most talented and exciting cricketers around and I hope to help them play intelligently and fearlessly. I am aware of the dressing room culture of the franchise and I think we can continue to improve it so that United remains the most successful franchise in the PSL.”

Fantastic choice.

Couldn't think of a better leader to lead them to just above Lahore Qalandars on the table.

Hmm I wonder if ISLU appointed him from their own accord? or were they instructed by PCB to sack Deano and subsequently replace him with Misbah?

If it's the latter, Pakistan cricket (and as a nation) finds itself in such a poor state because of this corrupt mentality. This is not a good look for Misbah.

According to Wasim Khan, It's on the job training for Misbah for experience.

So Ronchi is the assistant coach. Then why is he retained as a diamond or gold pick? That's a waste of spot for someone who plays only T10 league now.

The conflict of interest being allowed here is an utter disgrace.

Misbah and his greed finally shinning bright for everyone to see.

R.I.P pakistan cricket.

Islamabad United's glory days are back.

It's no co-incidence that Misbah took the team to multiple tournament wins. Gonna be tough for others this time.

The king is back, so is his pick Sharjeel Khan.

Good going PCB. We need this job for our rookie coach in training. After his father beats him in a series.

I believe Misbah being appointed IU coach was the very first thing that came up with regards to his coaching career. The rest came later. It's rumoured that the reason why the official announcement of Misbah becoming Pakistan's coach-selector took so long was because this was the sticking point; eventually PCB allowed it.

He can be a coach, selector, captain or whatever he wants to be for Islamabad united just please keep this guy away from Pakistan cricket team

this is disappointing news, not just as a cricket fan but as a Pakistani. Sad state of affairs

This is bad news as a fan of the national team. I don’t want him focused on IU affairs. I want him at the competition scouting players and working on his strategies for the national team. Like it or not he’s gonna be the HC for the national team for the next 3 years so I want him completely focused on that. I understand we allowed Mickey Arthur to coach KK while national team HC but that policy has to stop.

Now I will celebrate each time IU would lose. Ridiculous, why this is not a conflict of interest case and how many jobs he needs. Pakistan cricket is revolving around one person, who is not qualified for any coaching job, no wonder kids from IU like Musa playing test cricket.

Well it never ceases to amaze me with his sense of entitlement.

Islamabad United usually do well, and i think it will continue.
Qalandars, who refuse to sack Javid, are in for another wooden spoon:wahab2

This is literally how all the institutions in Pakistan have become a joke

PCB aren't serious about cricket. No serious organization would give someone this much power with Misbah track record as a captain. Not to forget he was a limited batter so he is misfit for that role.

Loving the burn.

These haters fail to realize that Islamabad United Rose to the top under Misbah. And he's here again to lead them to glory!

Even as a captain, he was calling most of the shots in the team, picking players and devising the strategy.

So if you're an ISLU fan, there's a high chance you're going to become the next champions like the previous two times.

The way Dean Jones ISLU coach who helped ISLU to win 2 PSL titles and to qualify for the playoffs in the other 2 seasons was removed to accomodate this guy was utterly disgraceful. Misbah probably did this as payback for Dean Jones benching him for many of ISLU games in the PSL.

Petty and pathetic stuff.

Is Deano going to coach another team or is he staying away from PSL?

I feel uncomfortable about the number of roles Misbah is holding.

He's a good man, an honest man and someone who has Pakistan cricket's best interests at heart, but for one person to hold so many roles is frankly ridiculous.

He will be judged by results, no need to fret.

An honest good man understands his limitations, he does not bite more than he can chew

If it's for making money then I wouldn't blame him at all but the thing is that it's hurting Pak cricket.

It would have been much better if Misbah didn't coach a PSL team and instead watched games to scout new talent.

That's your opinion , but in my opinion he is not honest and doesn't care about Pakistan cricket team.

All the positions Misbah is holding is for the show of camera. He doesn't do anything to train players. He can get more responsibilities in the paper and get big pay cheque.

What a signing.

Misbah picks Steyn. It's too easy for him at the PSL, becoming the champions has become a habit.

I think they were lacking a bit in bowling but don't see any weaknesses now. Solid tactics backing them too.

You are on troll mode now. No disrespect to Steyn, but he's made of glass now. What a waste of a platinum position.

If he was a "good and honest man", he wouldn't have ousted Mickey to serve his own self-interests.

Misbah is educated and intelligent enough (as an MBA holder) to know he should not be involved in this decision and stepped away from the committee, if he wanted to apply for the role.

Also if he really has "Pakistan cricket's best interests at heart", he wouldn't have put himself forward in the first place, given that he has no relevant experience and little/no qualifications.

Yesterday, I found out that Misbah's appointment had been delayed because he had demanded to also be appointed as a PSL Head Coach.

I am grateful of Misbah for restoring Pakistan's reputation following the 2010 spot-fixing scandal, however this alone does not warrant him to have this sense of entitlement.

A good and honest man, who cares about the best interests of Pakistan cricket certainly wouldn't conduct himself like this.

Misbah speaking to the press :

"Regarding the Islamabad United commitment, that preceded me taking up the Head Coach and Chief Selector role. This came later"

"If I am not trustworthy, then I shouldn't have any role. Even if I'm not working with IU but I'm biased or unfair and I don't do my work properly then I shouldn't be in this position. If I can do this properly, then me being in PSL will be a plus point. I can work with my players on development for Pakistan's future and I can closely see the opposition as well. I can see their performances closely. The T20 World Cup is also coming up so working in this environment is important for my development, that I work in PSL and get involved in this T20 cricket and improve myself. You have to do everything separately. When I am with IU, I won't be Pakistan's coach. At that time, I will be focused on IU, and the same vice versa"

Dean Jones' take on Misbah's multiple roles

“It’s difficult to say if taking all these roles might be a bit too much for Misbah but then that is a question he can answer best. Ultimately and usually, it will be down to how many wins and losses he gets for Pakistan and for Islamabad. He is a dear mate of mine and has been a big part of the Islamabad United group and it’s quite possible that he has taken on more than he can chew, but the bottom line is if he called me and asked for advice, I would be the first one to help him out.”

Where are the folks that had an issue with Mickey coaching KK and called it a conflict of interest? Just because it’s their villager Misbah now they won’t say a word. Pathetic.

Let me tell you the difference.

Mickey Arthur was actually a qualified coach.

Bahir mein jao Peshawar Zalmi,

IM back at supporting my United :))

Conflict of interest. Besides, let Misbah focus on the national team instead of PSL. March-April is going to be a hectic month for the national team, and Misbah has to be prepared. Not sure if he’ll be able to multi-task.

This is conflict of interest. To those who compare this with Mickey Arther, he was our head coach only and he had no role in selecting players where as Misbah is Pakistan's selector and head coach as well. Selectors should not be associated with these T20 leagues.

ppers say mickey did not allow certain players like fawad alam and wahab riaz(even though he came back) and others in the team

Fawad is a different case. No captain or coach wanted him for some reason. I think its more to do with his batting style and technique. He couldn't even get selected under Sarfraz so don't know who to blame for his exclusion. Mickey was never pushing Karachi kings player into national squad.

So are we impressed by his coaching so far?

Couldn't care less who he coached but wish he would stay away from the national team.

Islamabad United made one of the worst decisions in their PSL history in appointing Misbah as coach and it showed in the field placings as well as the selections. Was surprised to see 2 bowling all rounders (Amad Butt, Faheem Ashraf) selected reducing specialist bowling to very ordinary Musa and debutant Akif. Drop catches and feeding Azam on his strengths cost Islamabad the match.

This is just a beginning.

After 4 years of supporting islamabad, Ive made the decision to start supporting Multan. There really is no hope with Misbah.

So you were supporting IU when PSL 5 started and after one match you have shifted your support? :virat

No, i made the decision as soon as misbah was confirmed as the coach. I was undecided on who to support but after seeing Multan’s preparation and underrated players I decided to go with them. Everyone likes the underdogs.

I was simply stating this in the thread today.

AMAZING.

Misbah continues his legacy - being the best PSL team and being the most successful PSL person!!

?

Phainta in the first match, and now two wins and you are already in space.

I know right!! Isn't he like, the best ever?!?!? Given the current inflation right now, I think Misbah should be the face of the £100,000 rupee note. I really do. I really, really do.

Looks like Misbah will go onto win ISLU the MisbahSL, I mean the PSL, sorry

Yes.

Deal with it. The success can't sit well with some, I understand.

:najam

Just so happy for you bro. After today's win, which BTW is more relevant than the Allies winning WW2, I'm guessing you're gonna hang an extra garland around that statue of Misbah you have at home, Am I right??!?!

Really don't think it's wise for him to be a franchise coach considering he's also the chief selector and national coach. Huge conflict of interest

Islamabad United has the best team but they have worst coach as well

Islamabad United has the best team but they have worst coach as well.

I have only one thing to say that no where in the world even at street cricket people will not select Rizwan contentiously in T20 but sir great Misbha has selected him over and over again so that he does not have to select Sarfarz.

If Allah gives you a responsibility than you fulfill your job with honesty and passionately.

Both Misbha and Waqar will be packing their bags after this bags after this PSL.

Their team is not the best. Any team which has Shadab, Asif, Faheem, Amad in it can't be the best.

They have very deep bating, very hard hitting openers and good fast bowling. What they are missing plan, spark, finishing, killing factor.

They have real match winner but our national Coach misses Rizwan like players.

LQ and Karachi certainly have better coaches - they're winning so many matches, right? :vk2

KK and LQ are the worst teams this season so far, yet.. you're showing your hate.

Thanks for living up to your nickname - desperation and hate. Take it to the coach discussion thread.

LQ? They have Aqib Javed who is more genious than Misbha.

I must say that i that i thought Misbha is the worst coach ever but Aqib Javed changed my mind.
