This weekend the ICC is expected to announce that the two top ranked Test teams will play a World Championship Final at Lords in 2019.
We have known this for ages, and teams like Australia have thrown out every single player aged over 30 to ensure that they are as well positioned as possible for this.
Yet meanwhile Misbah-ul-Haq is clinging on to the Test captaincy by his fingernails. His batting has been exposed as that of a very fit middle-aged man who has lost his hand-eye coordination and reflexes, while his captaincy has to be seen to be believed. In the Third Test in Australia he actually opened the bowling with Yasir Shah.
In case you have forgotten, Yasir Shah had been overbowled to the tune of 40-2-167-1 in the First Innings, and Misbah's decision to open with him instead of Wahab Riaz reaped a return of 14-0-124-1 (while Wahab Riaz was used as first change and took 7-0-28-1).
Misbah's batting and especially his captaincy have already been completed exposed. He is clinging on by saying that a new skipper should not have been exposed in New Zealand and Australia, presumably for fear that he might average 11 with the bat and lose all 5 Tests, except hold on..........
But doesn't there need to be a new skipper and new Number 5 to try to propel the team to the 2019 Test Championship Final and indeed to play in it?
Doesn't that mean that Misbah is actually BLOCKING the development of the team?
Because either he intends to play in the 2019 Final - he'd be 45 years old - or he is being selfish and blocking the development of the team to play in it.
It has to be one or the other. There are no other options.
