Following back injury to Yasir Shah, the team management had asked the selection committee to call Mohammad Asghar as a back up player for the three-Test match series against Australia commencing from December 15,2016 in Brisbane.

The national selection committee has concurred with this request and Chairman PCB has approved the name of Mohammad Asghar. He will join the team as 17th member.

Is this just a back up precaution?

Or he is ruled out of 1st test ?

:))) He's being billed as the 17 year old spinner on Cricket Australia website

This is gonna be interesting

True major...i have seen his age to be 22 on cricinfo early this year during PSL ...
But after that edition it seems to have reverted to 17.
Typical!

Hahaha just googled him and his age is showing as 17.. If you're gonna lie at least do it right

Good, would suggest that the management have no faith in Nawaz fulfilling the role of a specialist spinner, don't blame them either

Gohar would've been a better option. Ah well atleast Zulfi wasn't picked

What? Why? Srsly rofl, if you're gonna pick a spinner at least take into account the opposition's team composition first and the conditions.

Same brainless, thick-headed selections. When we needed Asghar the most aka in the world t20 we picked some other jobbers in SPIN conditions ***, no genuine spinner taken..

Now that we need a specific type of player for the conditions we're gonna face, we pick Asghar... when we already have Nawaz, both offer the same thing more or less outside of Asia.

And then this poor boy is going to get smashed by a team filled with goddamn LEFT HANDERS on tracks where debutants like him see their career fall apart, then selectors led by Inzi will say "uh yeah we need seniors" and Zulfi will replace him for WI and stick around for 4 more years.

Why not just select another back-up pacer in case one of our legendary pacers continue their rut, can't do worse in Aus then a sla..

Asghar is great. Best spinner in the country.

But it will be a difficult tour for a debutant, pitches are not that good for spinners there.

Also, people need to stop making fun of his age. He's a well built guy looks like having good genes and looks about his age, some insecure people who may not be as well built are attacking him.

Bring proof or don't make allegations.

Yasir Shah, Mohammad Nawaz, and Mohammad Asghar.

That's three spinners turning the ball into left-handed batsmen. That's as illogical as it gets.

I realize we don't have a good offie (Hafeez doesn't count) so an extra pacer made sense. If Yasir Shah got injured, they could have played the fourth pacer.

This isn't a strategic selection. It's more of a "we hope Yasir Shah stays healthy" selection.

the nawaz selection was foolish by the team in the first place, they couldn't take him to australia.

sadly there is no right arm offie in pakistan currently

He is the Best Spinner but we needed a spinner in place of Nawaz who could turn it away from Lefties.

Pcb should have ensured that Nasir Awais & Junaid Ilyas should have played this FC season and one of them should have been picked if they gave optimum performances in Fc Cricket to counter Aussie Left handers.

Great point ,sir. Need an off spinner in the team desperately.

Pakistan should have picked Mohammad Hafeez especially after he cleared his bowling action. He would have been the best replacement for Nawaz.

17?!?!... But during the PSL he said he is 19 or 20.

So after passing one year he did not gain a year but lost three. Wow, as they say "Only in Pakistan"

All in all Asghar is a good choice, HOWEVER, he further weakens our already weak lower order.

Great choice! Always rated him highly this could be his chance to prove himself on an international level.

Poor decision, should have sent Hafeez. Would have strengthen batting too.

Hafeez is flopping like there is no tomorrow on the domestic pitches and you want him sent to AUSTRALIA?

If he replaces Yasir, then he is going to bat at #7 or #8. Top 6 are already taken.

So he is good enough to play as one of four specialist bowlers after bowling a grand total of zero overs for ages before the last Quaid-e-Azam Trophy match?

Is there a better off-spinner available at the moment? Slow left-armers are not going to work in Australia against 7 left-handed batsmen.

And we have no proof to suggest that Hafeez will work as a bowler either. If push comes to shove, I'd rather play four pacers.

The worst place to debut. I feel for Asghar. You play 8 months in the UAE yet you get to possibly debut in Aussieland.

You can thank Inzi and Misbah for that. The same thing happened with Babar, poor lad was thrown in the deep end in New Zealand. Had to come in and bat at number three in the second match of his career on a green mamba. Good thing he scored that 90* otherwise there would already be murmurs starting for his dropping.

Asghar is the future of Pak spin bowling, but why select him here?

Aus is a graveyard for spinners and even seasoned spinners have struggled, so this will be a very tough start to his career.

I can only hope, he isn't judged on the basis of his performances in Aus (if he plays) and dropped for the UAE games.

I rate Asghar very highly but I'm surprised they didn't call up another leggie, perhaps Shahzaib Khan.

Asghar will be a very good bowler but he's very raw and hasn't played much 4 day cricket.

Lol selecting a left arm spinner when Australian team has a lot of left hand batsmen. This is the Pakistan "think tank" for you . :)

Really dont understand whats wrong with that.. Herath is a left hand bowler who bamboozled Australia. On the side note, I'm not comparing him with Asghar. In the end Yasir is a right hand leggie(offspin left hand bowler in other words)

Left arm spin bowler bowling to multiple left handers on unhelpful conditions for spin bowling, there is a lot wrong with that.

Asghar is a fine talent but this is the wrong series for him to come into.

Hopefully Yasir is fit for the 1st test
