Mohammad Asif targets return to international cricket against England

Interviewed Mohammad Asif a few days ago.

Watch this space for the interview guys.

For those asking as to why Asif has not been playing in the QEA Trophy, it's due to a minor injury. The ball hit him on the foot and also he's had a tight hamstring. He told me that he expects to be fit for the next round of QEA Trophy matches.

I understand, appreciate and admire it when people wish to keep a very low profile and want to go about their business privately and quietly without raising too many eye brows but this guy has taken it too far. It is almost as if he has absolutely no drive at all to play for Pakistan again and is least bothered. Even in the 5-6 years of the ban, he always gave the impression of "Nah, i am not interested and bothered to play for Pakistan again so dont really care".

Why has he not played a single domestic match so far? Has the PCB told him in clear cut terms not to bother and that he will never ever be selected for Pakistan ever again?

Salman Butt regardless of how you feel about him, you can tell he is working very hard behind the scenes to get a place in the side and has put the roadwork in.

Asif is in the WAPDA squad.

I spoke with a WAPDA player recently and he said that the team management are reluctant to play both Asif and Irfan in the same match due to fitness concerns.

finally some actual update about Asif... Cant wait till he bowls this season, fitness was something he mentioned he would be working extensively on post last season, guess the extensive bit is missing right now

Any fitness concerns are even more alarming. The guy is 34 years old, he is not a tear away express bowler and for him to have fitness concerns right now is another tickmark against him. Personally i get the feeling the PCB and the selectors arent going to pick him again regardless of how he does in Domestic Cricket.

I strongly believe that Asif can make Pakistan's Test squad for the Tour of England & South Africa and be successful

Asif must show Salman's like hunger & passion and he must hit NCA Gym & swimming pool. He is not overweight but he needs to improve his fitness levels wrt his endurance/energy levels which are down.

Currently He is doing exceptionally well at FC level but as per me his Age speed is around 75 - 77 mph at present which is not good enough at Int level.

If he wants to play again than his Age speed should be nothing less than 79 mph which he can manage only by improving his fitness levels.

Look at Vernon Philander. Amongst Steyn, Morkel, Rabada, Bumrah, Shami, Pandya, Kumar Philander was the slowest hobbering around 80 mph but he took 9 wickets and was Man of the Match.

Pace was never his biggest asset he could those speed and still take wickets with his line and length. Probing outside the corridor of uncertainty time and time again just like McGrath and clever variations.

Yes but 76,77mph pace is only good enough against Eng/SA if you get a very juicy grassy wicket. These days you hardly get such a wicket in Test Cricket so to be really effective like Asif of Past he has to have a average pace of at least 79 Mph otherwise he won't be effective.

Also at his current fitness and pace PCB Hierarchy won't select him. He just needs to put in hard yards for a month only if he really wants to make a comeback.

he just needs one chance. he was never that good in domestic. so ignoring him based on his stats will be a big mistake. let the fish swim for last time.......

C'mon Pakistan, itni talent ki kami kaise? Why are you guys interested in bringing back a player who brought disrepute to the game?

I believe we should select asif as he can better than malik

As much as I think introducing a 35 year old into the squad who missed out on a few years of cricket is a bad idea and a step backwards, I am curious to see how he would perform in England and the tour is only two tests so it is not like a full 5 match experience where a new, younger bowler would learn a lot.

Final nail in the coffin

With Abbas on the scene now, Asif has no chance of an international call-up.

Sadly he will be remembered as a cricketer who did not fully utilised the god-given talent he had.
