Mohammad Azharuddin: An all-time great?

He bats at no4 in my atg11 in Odis for India..

Only if you pick one of Sehwag, Ganguly, Rohit and ICCDhawan.

In most all time lineups, you would end up playing Ganguly at 3 as he did in 2003 CWC and Virat at 4.

Azhar bhai is a grade A choker and a mental midget.

He is more talented than Seh ag, Ganguly etc. all that talent means nothing if you cannot score when the things get tough. He had his moments though.

I would rank him a tire below the likes of Laxman/Ganguly/Sehwag.

No he is not an ATG. Even though he had the potential. He is at best an Indian great. Does not feature in all time ODI or test squads for India.

Not even close.

You know nothin about cricket then... He was one of the best. It always carried the Indian team in the 90s era after sachin.

He wasnt an ATG but still one of tge finest batsmen to play the game.

Have watched live cricket in the 90s??
For What I saw he is the only one who carried the team on his shoulders.. People loved him relied on him. On few occasion the crowd went berserk after Azhar got out. Did this need to say something..

Azhar was a very good ODI batsman of his time. He was better in ODIs than tests.

He was a good batsman, he played some excellent knocks against the South African and Australian bowlers something which our legends like Inzi and Yousaf failed to do.

Not close to being an ATG. Was a pretty good batsman though, very pleasing to the eye. I followed his career throughout the 90's, but missed out on how good he was in the 80's.

Amazing hand/eye coordination.
Wrists that were magical.
Superb balance at the crease.

One of my all-time favourite batsmen.

At his best Azhars strokeplay made Tendulkar look ordinary.Immense ability, great fitness but a cavalier attitude.

Azhar was a fantastic player and brilliant to watch when in full flow. He is not an ATG though. He is surely an Indian great in tests. In ODI's he was very good for the time he played in but lots of others have come in and have overtaken him in that format. He unfortunately does not make both the tests and ODI all-time X1 for India.

Azhar was not just an excellent batsman but also a brilliant fielder and catcher. He captained India for 10 years and India was undefeated at home in a series under his captaincy throughout the 90s. (Only home series India lost in the 90s was under Sachin)

ATG or not, I don't like to compare cricketers across eras, but one thing is for sure, don't simply go by the numbers. Although I started watching cricket from 1992 onwards, still scoring runs was never so easy as it is today, people scoring double centuries in ODIs for fun, 300 has become a joke. It wasn't so easy earlier, so all those runs
the players of the past scored were more meaningful and hard earned.

Above average batsman (good in ODIs, okay in Tests), but a terrible human being. A disgrace to Indian cricket overall.

NO. In odis, our best ever middle order batsmen was Yuvraj Singh. Azhar is better than Dravid though.

In tests, he is behind VVS.

So, overall nowhere close to ATG.

Former India captain Mohammad Azharuddin has filed his nomination for the president's post in the Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA) which will hold its elections on September 27. Azharuddin, whose nomination was unceremoniously rejected two years ago, submitted his papers to former Chief Election Commissioner VS Sampath on Wednesday.

"I want to take inputs from everybody and work for promoting cricket. I want to do something for districts also (towards growth of cricket)," Azharuddin said.

Vikram Man Singh, son of former cricket administrator PR Man Singh, has submitted his nomination for the vice-president's post. Those who filed nominations, include Ajmal Asad (secretary), P Srinivas (joint secretary), G Srinivas (treasurer) and P Anuradha (councillor).

The panel for the election will be announced after the withdrawal of nominations on September 23, sources said. It is understood that the election bid of Azharuddin, Vikram and others has the backing of former cricketers and administrators Arshad Ayub and Shivlal Yadav.

Azharuddin's nomination paper for HCA president's post was rejected in 2017 by the returning officer on the grounds that he failed to produce proof of BCCI lifting the ban imposed on him for his alleged involvement in match-fixing.

Election officials had also said then that there was no clarity on whether Azharuddin was an eligible voter form the club he currently represents.

Only ATG status he should receive is for (alleged) match fixing.

At the end of the day ATG are made on basis of performance and not talent. Azhar does not deserve to be rated as an ATG.

Moreover, his involvement in fixing clouds a shadow over his entire career. He sold his country for money, terrible, terrible person and we made him MP :facepalm

No! The match fixing allegations further tainted his reputation. Not from the elite class, no way!

In his days he was most styllish Indian batsman. He will be in All time great Indian OD team. But could not take his game to next level. He is like Mark Waugh , Carl Hooper , David Gower etc.

Haven't seen a more stylish right handed batsman than him.

Azhhar was a quality player. He had the great start to his career by scoring century in hist first 3 tests. However his average away record puts him out of any ATG contention.
He was natural successor of Viswanath in terms of style. However both were surpassed by Laxman.

Very good player. Bats in at 4 in my Indian all-time ODI XI, remember not many batters have had success at that position for India.

Not an ATG though. A very good player in both the formats without any shadow of doubt.

I will play Yuvraj in my team but at 5. He definitely finds a place. Its always a pleasure to have Yuvi- Dhoni combo in your XI and I wont gonna miss that.

Azhar will stabilise the batting at 4.Either of Azhar or Dravid can do that, I picked Azhar. He was better than Dravid overall in ODI cricket.

Former India captain Mohammad Azharuddin was on Friday elected President of the Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA), life coming full circle for the man who was once indicted for match-fixing and banned forever from playing.

ALSO READ: Cricket In Hyderabad Has Suffered A Lot, Want To Bring About A Change: Mohammed Azharuddin

The stylish batsman of yesteryears polled 173 votes while his opponent Prakash Chand Jain got 73 votes. His entire panel won their respective contests.

The victory marks his official entry into cricket administration after his nomination was rejected on technical grounds.

The 56-year-old, who has also served as a Congress MP from Moradabad in Uttar Pradesh, led India to a spate of Test series wins over England, Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe at home in the 1990s.

The former batsman fell from grace after he was implicated in the 2000 match-fixing scandal that shook the core of Indian cricket. However, the Andhra High Court had ruled that the investigation against him was not conducted properly.

The operative part of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) report stated: "The evidence against Azharuddin … clearly establishes the fact that he took money from bookies/punters to fix cricket matches and also the fact that the 'underworld' had approached him to fix matches for them."

Azharuddin, who appeared in 99 Tests and 334 ODIs, filed his nomination for the president's post in the HCA last week.

One of the most graceful batsmen of the mid 1980's to late 90's, Azharuddin started his career with a hat-trick of Test hundreds against England during the 1984/85 season.

His wristy stroke-play was a treat to watch and he could hit anything bowled on the imaginary fifth off-stump towards deep mid-wicket boundary with ease.

He was possibly the best all-round fielder those days and whose reflex single action throw from close-in could only be replicated by Ravindra Jadeja among current cricketers. Also the unmatched swagger with his collar-up and the gibberish manner in which he spoke had its own charm.

Azharuddin and Ajit Wadekar formed one of the first successful coach (cricket manager)-captain partnerships in the early 90's when India were invincible at home with Anil Kumble at his deadliest best.

He led India in an unprecedented three 50-over World Cups (1992, 1996, 1999) while others like S Venkatraghavan, Kapil Dev and MS Dhoni captained in two editions each.

The last of his 22 Test hundreds came against South Africa in his 99th and final match after which he was indicted for match-fixing.

While his fall from grace was quick, the road to redemption was filled with a lot of problems, including personal tragedy, and controversies that never seemed to leave him.

He lost his younger son Mohammed Ayazuddin in a bike accident in 2011.

He tried to enter sports administration through the Badminton Association of India but was found ineligible.

Even though the court termed his ban "illegal", the BCCI never fully warmed up to him and he is yet to get his pending payments, one-time benefit cheque and pension.

By 2016, he was gradually getting acceptance in the system and would get invitations for various BCCI functions, including the annual awards night.

As the top representative of Hyderabad CA, he will now become relevant as the N Srinivasan camp and its rivals fight for power in BCCI.

Match fixing existed before Azhar also.

Also , one person alone cannot fix a game , you need at least 3 - 4 top players to do that.

Not an all time great, but one of the greatest of his era. He had excellent technique.

Unfortunately, he bottled it with the match fixing scandal.

Seeing how we reward crooks like Azhar, Jadeja and Prabhakar, Indians have no right to lecture Pakistanis about their fixing problems or shame Butt, Amir, Asif. First set your own house in order, then worry about others. News like these make me sick.

My all-time favourite Indian batsman.
Apart from tendulkar the 90s indian batting was pretty mediocre. The contrast effect of Nayan mongia at the other end made him look good. He barely performed under pressure. Limited in ability. And then the fixing thing happened.
Gavaskar wipes the floor with Azhar everyday of the week as far as ATG batsmen from india are concerned.
Also because wristy style is not natural to the western players so they found him to be exotic in a sense. That may explain why he was admired outside the subcontinent.
We have had atleast 10 better batsmen over the years.

Had potential but didnt reach ATG level

Great player but good never have been an ATG.

He had technical issues with the short ball. He was however one of the best ever players of spin and a good player of the moving ball.

He’s a little bit like Zaheer Abbas. Elegant, wrist and stylish, a class player but not good enough for the Tendulkar/Miandad class.

Superstar of World Series -1985 triumph for India.

Azhaurddin was the most stylish batter of his era and poster boy of Indian cricket until Sachin arrived.

Collars up, taweez hangin', chewing gum, high backlift, white helmet, wristy flicks that only he played.

What a playa!

Azar was most famous cricketer in India on par with Kapil of his era.
Everyone used to like him, he was my favorite batsmen.
Superb talent.

Among Indian batsmen taking all the formats(and prioritising as per their era),

Sachin Tendulkar
Virat Kohli
Sunil Gavaskar
Rahul Dravid
Virender Sehwag
Mohammad Azharuddin

So, he is the 6th name that walks as the best batsmen India have produced overall. If you ask this to casual Indian fans, they will rate Ganguly very high as well.

Many Indians believe Ganguly as second best batsmen of his era combining formats after Tendulkar and Dravid as third best with Sehwag following next.

In tests, Laxman was comfortably better though and Pujara is on the way as well.

Azhaurddin is ahead of Ganguly for me. He had a 5th gear and was a perfect middle order batsman. As a test batsman also Azhar bhai had more class

Are you going to tell me Ranjitsinhji is not an Indian cricketer? Brother he's the very foundation of Indian cricket.

But how can you add him in an Indian XI when he never ever played for India? That's the first criteria of a country all time XI.

One of cricket's supreme stylists taking batting aestheticism to heights of divinty.Often his most elegant shots resembled the touches of a painters brush looking like a ressurected Ranjitsinghji when executing the leg glance. In his era the best of all on the legside.Azhar took oriental artistry to regions unexplored at Lords in 1990 when scoring 120.Overall to me for sheer style or elegance in the top 5-6 batsmen of all time .At his best Azhar could sit with the gods of Olympus with his majestic touch .

Unfortunately he did not live up to the promise he displayed in his earlier career when it looked as though he had st the seal to becoming an all-time great. He was very successful against strong attacks at home like Pakistan in 1987 or earlir England in 1984 when scoring 3 centuries in debut tests but failed on succesive tours of Australia and England in 1985 to 1986 or in West Indies in 1989.Later succesful in New Zealand but classical only in flashes on tours of Australia and South Africa.Gave blemishes of his genius at Cape Town in 1997 when scoring 114 aside Tendulkar but his only succesful tours were that of England and New Zealand.Neverthless he was outstanding against great attack sat home like Australia in 1998 as well as South Africa in 1996 and 2000.Azhar mercilessly treated the likes of Warne,Donald etc.At many junctures in his career Azhar after periods of loss of form heroically ressurected himself from the depths of despair to regain glory like in England in 1990 ,1992 at home v England and against Australia in 1998 and South Africa in 2000

In ODI's to me the best batsman in the world before ascendancy of Tendulkar.Simply classical improvisation.A big match-winner who led many a succesful run chase.

Azhar also had an average of over 55 in tests won which was praiseworthy .His knocks shaped many a win.

What may go against Azhar was his relative inconsistency against genuine pace .Still he did take the likes of Imran or Wasim apart in 1987 or Hadlee. His record is comparatively low against the best of his time overseas .Batsmen who could be classed with Azhar like Vishwanath,Mark Waugh , Gower or even Majid Khan had a better record against genuine pace.I rate Zaheer Abbas ahead as he has better performances in England an Australia and also scored 4 double centuries.

I would rate Azhar just a notch below Martin Crowe,David Gower,Gundappa Vishwanath .VVS Laxman or Colin Cowdrey.

But how can you add him in an Indian XI when he never ever played for India? That's the first criteria of a country all time XI.

Cared to check if India even independent then bro?

Is Bhagat Singh British?

Ranjitsinhji is the foundation of Indian cricket. I think it is a huge statement to say he's not an Indian cricketer. No one in Indian cricket can accept this statement.

He was the biggest attraction in Cricket when he played..Arguably our greatest ever right up there with Sachin in terms of sheer aura and stature.

How would you compare Azhar with Vishwanath or even Mohinder Amarnath. Not suspect against genuine pace? Was he aftr Ranjitsinghji the most stylish Asian or Indian batsmen of all?

Do reply to your opinion on my analyiss kindly. How do you compare Vishwanath or Amarnath with Azhar? Both were better against genuine pace if you asess records.Azhar unlike Vishy was not at his best against West Indies or in Australia.Nor did he ever equal Mohinder in Pakistan nad West Indies in 1982-83.

In test cricket Vishy ahead being a better performer against genuine pace bolwing and never scoring any of his 14 centuries in a losing cause? Was Azhar better than Zaheer Abbas?Let us compare the likes of Azhar,Vishy,Mohinder,Crowe ,Mark Waugh and Gower. As a sheer stylist Azhar could join the very top.

Ranjitsinhji is a different category of elite altogether. He's a folk hero in English cricket and was the most celebrated figure in the game during his time. For me, as a legendary figure he's up there with Sachin and Gavaskar.

Didn't watch Jimmy and Gundappa live but they are too well respected heroes of Indian cricket.

I guess Azhar and Gundappa are similar class.

Jimmy is someone you could take a gamble on if you needed to pick someone to bat for your life. His performance against West Indies quartet in WI is considered by many even outside India to be the greatest display of batsmanship ever.

The guy has an average of 36 odd away from home. Yes, he was a good batsman. But don’t stretch it too far.

1990s wasn't the era where you got easy pitches or opponents on tours to inflate batting averages.

Even the best if the best averaged 30-40 in certain countries during 1990s. It's all relative.

Azhar bhai averages 60 in India.

Dubai: A video clip of Mohammad Azharuddin last week brought a strong sense of déjà vu with it. Clad in a T-shirt and golf shorts, a baseball cap and the collars turned up as usual, the former Indian cricket captain was flicking some throwdowns at him – non-chalantly as ever – towards the imaginary mid-wicket.

Ask him about it and ‘Azzu bhai’ – one of the most enigmatic characters of Indian cricket is almost embarrassed at it. ‘’Yes, it’s the handiwork of my son (Asad) and daughter-in-law Anam (sister of tennis icon Sania Mirza). It’s part of my routine to visit the cricket stadium every evening for some jogging and stretching etc but on that day, they insisted that I have a hit too. Little did I know that they will put the clip on the social media,’’ said Azhar.

As fit as ever at 57 years, the man with the magical wrists would have been perhaps a perfect package for the IPL franchises in the era of T20 with his uninhibited strokeplay, lightning quick fielding and an ability to roll his arm over for some gentle medium pacers. Asked if he would have enjoyed the shortest format, Azhar told Gulf News during an exclusive interview over phone from India: ‘’I think I would have enjoyed the format,’’ before adding in zest: ‘’May be, you can ask the franchise owners if they would have bid for me.’’

It was last September when Azhar, after spending years in the wilderness due to the Indian board’s ban on him on match-fixing charges, took a fresh guard in the sport as the president of the Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA). The state body, on their part, honoured him by naming a stand at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium – and this job occupies a lion’s share of Azhar’s time now.

‘’Yes, it’s quite a challenging job. There are 226 affiliated clubs and you have to run it with a completely neutral perspective. It’s much tougher than leading a side where you are handling 15 persons,’’ he said.

The cricket officialdom perhaps never had it so good with two former India captains in administration now – with Azhar as the head of his state body while Sourav Ganguly is now the president of Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Graeme Smith, one of the most successful captains of South Africa, is now the Director of Cricket South Africa. Asked about the phenomenon, Azhar said: ‘’It’s welcome trend because we have played the game and can see things from a players’ perspective. As far as my role with Hyderabad is concerned, I am channelising all my energy to ensure that that the team comes up to a certain level as they have not done well in the last three to four seasons.’’

A staunch backer of the Indian Premier League (IPL), Azhar takes heart from Ganguly’s announcement a few days back that the BCCI is exploring all the options now to host the league – even if behind closed doors. ‘’I hope the league can eventually get a window where we get to host a minimum of seven matches. The league, whether one likes it or not, has given a lot to the sport in the last 10-12 years.

‘’It’s a stage where cricketers get a lot of attention if they perform and get recognised quickly. Just think about it, a Hardik Pandya or a Jasprit Bumrah may still have been struggling in first class cricket if the IPL was not there. I think it has been a win-win situation for the BCCI vis-à-vis the cricketers and don’t agree with a section of critics who often call it a money-grab,’’ he observed.

An owner of 6215 runs from 99 Tests and 9378 runs from 334 ODIs, Azhar was undoubtedly one of the most attractive batsmen to watch during his time – though his distinctive style would be a tough act to follow for any youngster. Has he ever thought of giving back something to the sport by taking up a coach’s role? ‘’ Yes, I am ready to give it a shot. If I get an opportunity to work with the Indian team, I would jump at it without batting an eyelid,’’ Azhar said.

However, while on the subject of coaching, the Hyderabadi feels that much is made out of the ‘support staff’ with each team these days – be at a national, state of franchise level. ‘’I am amazed to see so many people accompanying the team these days. For example, my specialisation is in batting and fielding and hence if I coach any team, I don’t really a batting coach. Isn’t it? ,’’ he countered.

Any conversation with Azhar cannot be complete without a reference to the India-Pakistan matches in Sharjah – and surely enough – he cannot stop reminiscing about them. ‘’Oh yes, there are so many memories of them during my career. But before I talk about those matches, I must thank Abdul Rahman Bukhatir and Asif Iqbal for their idea of starting the Cricketers’ Benevolent Fund Series (CBFS). It’s not only cricketers from India and Pakistan but other countries who have benefitted from them – and it used to be serious money for those days,’’ he said.

In fact, Azhar’s journey from a prodigiously talented debutant into Indian cricket’s folklore began with that of Sharjah itself in 1985 when India managed to defend a meagre total of 125 runs to win the opener of Rothmans Cup, the first-ever international tournament in the desert, against Pakistan. ‘’I remember being the highest scorer from either side with an innings of 47 runs as Imran Khan captured six wickets. Those days, we used to visit Sharjah twice a year – once in March and then again in October and were part of some classic contests,’’ he said.

Finally, which one of the India-Pakistan matches would rank as the most memorable one for him? ‘’Oh, it’s got to be the 1996 World Cup quarter final in Bengaluru. I have never possibly played in a more intense match in my life and it was huge relief to win the cliffhanger and make it to the semi-finals,’’ Azhar said.

It was also India’s best-ever World Cup showing under Azhar, who led the country in three of them between 1992 and 1999. The Men in Blues’ campaign ended in an anti-climax as their semi-final against Sri Lanka was abandoned at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata – with Match Referee Clive Lloyd eventually awarding the match to the Lankans.

It was a night of shame for Indian cricket at the hallowed venue – but that’s another story!

Azharuddin was in the same category as Salim Malik. Both had swagger and were classy but a level below of being an ATG.

https://sports.ndtv.com/cricket/ombudsman-reinstates-mohammed-azharuddin-as-hyderabad-cricket-association-president-2479195?amp=1&akamai-rum=off&__twitter_impression=true

Mohammed Azharuddin was on Sunday re-instated as President of the Hyderabad Cricket Association by Ombudsman Justice (retd) Deepak Verma, who also "temporarily disqualified" five members of the Apex Council, which had suspended the former India captain. In an interim order, the HCA Ombudsman a temporarily disqualified five members of the HCA Apex Council --K John Manoj, Vice President, R Vijayanand, Naresh Sharma, Surender Agarwal, Anuradha. The Apex Council had "suspended" Azharuddin for alleged violation of its constitution.

Allegations of Conflict of Interest were levelled against Azharuddin. Justice (retd) Verma in his order pointed out that the complaint against Azharuddin was not forwarded to Ombudsman and in effect has no legal validity.

"Apex Council on its own accord cannot take such a decision. Therefore, I deem it appropriate to set aside the resolution (if any) passed by these five members in suspending the duly elected President, issuing a show cause notice and direct them to refrain from any subsequent actions against the President of HCA, Mohammed Azharuddin," Justice (retd) Verma, said.

"Therefore, I direct that Mohammed Azharuddin shall continue as President and all complaints against office bearers shall only be decided by the Ombudsman.

"From the aforesaid facts and features, it is clearly reflected that instead of encouraging the game of Cricket, each one is playing their own politics for the reasons best known to them. Thus, it defeats the very purpose for which HCA has been formed", Justice (retd) Verma noted.

Regarding the five Apex Council members, Justice Verma in the order said, "I would like to make it clear that, just because these five members believe on their own accord that I am not ombudsman does not take away my powers which are now been confirmed by the High Court judgment and the minutes of the 85th AGM as well".

"These members cannot evade the due process of law just by stating that they don't agree to my appointment. It is clear from the above, that these members have malafide intentions and do not want smooth functioning of HCA.

"It is for this reason and reasons mentioned above, I hereby direct that these members are temporarily disqualified from performing their duties as office bearers of the Apex Council till the time these Complaints attain finality," the Ombudsman said.

Happy Birthday to the maestro.

Definitely not an ATG.

He was a really good player though. I got to see him live when I was a kid.

Azhar's talent was next to none and even during his playing days when India was Sachin and Sachin was India, i always used to tell my dad that Azhar is more talented than Sachin. He was a bit of Lara that way who could get out to some random bowler one day and could thrash the greatest of bowlers the very next day. No one broke the heart as badly as Azhar did in 90s. I felt cheated and betrayed by my favourite player whose posters used to adorn my bedroom wall, watching cricket has never been the same for me since then.

Basit Ali claimed that there was a lot of respect for the former Indian skipper in the Pakistan dressing room.

“Before every India match, I was given the responsibility to sledge the Indian players. I was told to disturb Sachin (Tendulkar), Jadeja (Ajay), Sidhu (Navjot), Kambli (Vinod), but the moment Azhar bhai’s name used to come, the entire team unanimously said no one would disturb Azhar bhai. I don’t have words to describe the amount of respect we used to have for Azhar bhai in our dressing room," said Basit on his Youtube channel.

‘’Be it Wasim (Akram) bhai, Salim Malik, Rashid Latif, Inzmam-ul-Haq and Waqar Younis, they would not dare to sledge Azhar bhai. I don’t think any Pakistan player ever insulted Azhar bhai.

“Azhar bhai used to bat at No 3 and when the likes of Ganguly and Dravid came up, he started batting low down the order and gave the youngsters his slot," he added.
