Mohammad Hafeez speaking in a podcast

"Before the 2010 episode, there was also a period that had a lot of illicit activities by the 90s players. Several of these iconic 90s names – they think of themselves as greats – they are, I respect them for all the good they have done. But they also did a lot of wrongs.”

“If you go look into their 90s career, it was filled with fights, backbiting, match-fixing and lobbying. The roots of all this – which drove fans away – were laid by the 90s player. They were super talented, no doubt, but their super talent put them away from discipline and right ambassadorship. They couldn’t portray the best image of Pakistan Cricket to the world. They didn’t leave behind a great legacy that we followed.

“If you look at the talent of the 90s players and compare their achievements, you won’t see anything. After the 1992 World Cup, what great things did the 90s players achieve? The roots started somewhere, the 2010 incident just blew up but it started way back.”

Courageous of Hafeez to make this statement.

I rather have the 90’s players that were fighting, match/spot fixing, clubbing and all sorts than to have the current generation of wimps with no masculinity.

Thank God we have upstanding, hardworking honest individuals like Babar, Rizwan, Shaheen and Shadab as our icons.

None of them sit in the pubs, clubs and backbite over who should be the captain. They simply want to play as much cricket as humanly possible.

Good for them, great for Pakistan.

so you would waste your precious time watching a game where there are match fixers that probably taking money to loose a game that you are gonna spend 8 hours of watching and feeling a heart break for?

If I had to choose between 90’s players and today’s generation of players then I’d choose the 90’s. Match/spot fixing is probably happening more often than you think, do I want to waste my time watching them play, nope. But, I also don’t want to watch a bunch of wimps play. They come on to social media and start sucking up to their captain as if he’s some messiah.

Match fixing was a big worry but in itself one only problem.

We also had intentional underperforming (for various reasons), players seen in clubs the night before important games, fake injuries, friends getting favours, grouping, bullying, people trying to remove captains and many more such issues.

Anyone romanticising the 90's era is absolutely clueless.

Thanks to Hafeez for saying boldly.
Pakistan team massively underperformed in 90's. The talents they got the capacity they had , should have been like the Aussies of 2000s. Just one word cup trophy isn't their true reflection. I m not saying they took bribe in every matches to underperforming. But they lacked true patriotism. Apart from Ramiz Raza each player playing regularly of that team was match winners. Yet they succumbed mostly when it really mattered. I havent seen so many captains playing in one playing 11 like Pakistan of 90.

Very good podcast. He gave alot of credit to misbah for the start of his career and how Misbah was crazy enough to make cricket his career very late in his age

Salim Malik was the worst rotten egg out of the lot. Australian players back then gave him the name The Rat.

As a player, none of the current crop comes close.

He powered Pakistan to victory in the 2017 final

Now we just lose
