[VIDEO] 90s players left no legacy for Pakistan Cricket, claim Mohammad Hafeez and Rashid Latif

What legacy is Hafeez talking about, the legacy of Sharjeel Khan, Azam Khan or the legacy Asif Ali left by winning 2 crucial games, are these worth more than 90s cricket.

Akhtar ' one over to SA in Sharjah in Early 2000s, heavier than all the legacy of Hafeez clan
W W . . W .

Shabby bro gave some epic spells

Nothing will ever top getting Dravid (The Wall) & Tendulkar (GOAT) back to back at Eden Gardens. That was Pakistan bowling aura at its peak brother. Give me a hell yeah?

Sports determines a players worth by winning the tournament and not some few games or series.
Yeah I don't buy this that trophies are the be a and end all. They are important, no doubt, but pretending like 90s players leave no legacy becsuse of one less trophy is stupid.

its not. The 90s team had every superstar and big player, yet without Imran and Miandad these guys couldnt do anything.

This is what the whole convo was between Hafeez, Malik and Akhtar. Akhtar said we never got replaced. To which Malik replied, you guys won nothing while we won the 2009 and 2017 trophy. Hafeez than added more salt to the wound.

It doesnt matter how good South Africa team is or NZ team is if they dont win any ICC trophy. Saffers not winning during the early 2000s was a sad thing as they had a great team yet couldnt win anything.

Sure you can criticise them for not delivering in 96 or falling like a house of cards at the final hurdle in 99, but why then does it push them to the extremity of no legacy?

It makes zero sense. Should we just forget all the test series they played? All the bilaterial series back when bilaterials held much more weight and importance?

I'll make an example taking your reference of the 2000s SA team. Cricket lovers remember such things as Kallis's all round brilliance, Gibbs's devastating hitting ability and Smith's brillance in captaincy despite no trophy in that era.

Again, I reinstate that the 2>1 is a simplistic reductionist view that takes no wider context into account.

By this logic, the likes of Iqbal Siqander, Wasim Haider and Zahid Fazal are legends because they were members of the 1992 ODI WC winning squad.

Hafeez is just projecting his insecurities. The 90's stars may have under achieved and not fully maximized their talents but they are well respect, well sought after for commentary, analyst and coaching gigs in Cricket based on their career achievements and the memories they left behind.

Hafeez outside Pakistan will not be in much demand.

Less said about the charlatan Rashid Latif the better, all he does is talk but never ever walks the talk, the PCB approached him numerous times for the Chief Selector position but he takes comfort in his media roles and hides behind "I refuse to work with badniyat incompetent people in the PCB". He was approached by Ehsan Mani and Wasim Khan therefore he cannot hide behind PCB's incompetent leadership and employees.

In an online conversation, Rashid Latif stated that the blame lies with cricketers from the 1990s, though he did not mention any names:

“These guys are wreaking havoc. They keep praising each other now, but all throughout their lives, they fought. Just throw some money at them, and they are ready to do whatever.”

Latif was very happy to work with Wasim Akram at PCB and crack jokes, laugh at his banter, jokes when he was getting a hefty paycheque of Rs 1-2 million from PTV. Ever since Latif was fired from PTV, he has just been spitting venom left, right and centre and is now selling his manjan at Geo.

Trophies alone are not enough, what about how consistently well the team performed, just because you fluke an ICC trophy but are in the bottom of the rankings for the most part leads credence to the claim that your ICC tournament win was a fluke. Everyone who has watched Cricket in the last 10-15 years consistently can clearly tell that Pakistan was for the most part a bottom tier team whereas India which consistently performed well in all Bilateral events, series and always reached the semi finals and finals of ICC events were Number 1.

So Rashid bhai has once again turned his back on his 90s brotherhood?

This whole convo was more about knocking down Shoaib Akhtar a few pegs & show him his aukaat than a debate over which team was better

Akhtar being his usual narcissist self - claiming how players like him were never replaced , basically taking a dump at Hafeez & Malik and they replied back in kind - as anybody wud have. Malik wanted to do it tongue-in-cheek but Hafeez decided to go no-holds-barred

Akhtar probably realized his original statement was bit disrespectful to his co-panelists - which is why he did not go full monty on them

like i said, SA has done consisstently well from 2000 to 2010, but since they never won ICC trophies between than it did not matter.

Pakistan during the last 15 years not doing well in series didnt matter as it still won 2 icc tournaments.

It feels soo weird when you listen to people like Akhtar and Younis making self claims of being Legends and irreplaceable. lol.

Like Younis i get it is a legend, but he himself doesnt need to say it.

And Akhtar lol,

What’s the deal with all these show anchors calling every panelist a legend? I can understand when you call a Wasim or Waqar a legend, but Hafeez, Malik, Shoaib, Amir - they’re all far from legends.

By the way towards the end Shoaib Malik also said to please check man of the match records for Bharat vs Pakistan matches. I think that was also a subtle dig at Shoaib Akhtar. Did he win any against Bharat?

IMG_9139.jpeg

Is he wrong though?
The whole mess of Pakistan vs India world cup streak started in the 90s.
By 2003 it should have been 4-0 to Pakistan.
How on earth did the 99 team lose to India.
90s team post 92 left no legacy, just match fixing and infighting.

As usual Hafeez is talking non sense. Pakistan had won many test series from 1980-2000 in England & NZ at home & away. Nowadays, Pakistan is struggling to compete even at home. Pakistan won 1992 WC, in 1996 they had one bad game against India in knockout, in 1999 reached WC final, won 2 test matches in India in 1999 in Chennai & Kolkata, won Carlton & United Tri series in Australia in 96-97.

Guys like Hafeez, Shoaib Malik, Shahid Afridi & Misbah are responsible for decline of Pakistan in ODI cricket. They all played tons of ODIs for so many years without accountability.

90s Pakistani team had politics but still had many noticeable performances and quite competitive most of the time and with many match winners

After 2003 the team was full of politics with some narcissistic players with no accountability.

Question to Hafeez: Did you performed in any big match against big team despite playing so much cricket? Hafeez should be reminded that he was one of the culprit in 2007 WC final, 2011 SF and many other big games

What exactly is Hafeez's legacy , c Boucher b Steyn
Hafeez’s legacy is a quick fire blitz playing a big role in Pakistan posting a big total and winning an ICC tournament final. His final leg of the career was world class.

Hafeez had a chance to create a legacy in Mohali but he played a stupid shot and rest is history, infact in Wt20 12, he was captain going toe to toe with hosts SL in SF when again Rush of blood led to getting stumped against Herath. Poor judgement in play even shahid afridi has more legacy than this fisherman hafeez

Not true.

They left a legacy of toxicity, infighting and of getting away with fixing.

IMO if the Qayyum commission had done its job and given the life bans that several players deserved, PCT would never have seen a 2010 type event.

Have had enough of Shoaib talking nonsense about his legacy.

Shoaib's Test legacy is that of an unreliable quick. Only 2-3 times (Eng 2005, ATC 99) did he last through a 2+ match test series without injury and create regular impact the way a quality Test bowler should.

He does not have a great record in Aus bar two good spells. He never played a full Eng series. He bullied NZ in one test.

He was poor against India in the 2 full series he played against them home and away in 04 and 07 despite chucking.

Shoaib thinks if he was Australian or if Imran had mentored him he'd have 350 wkts.
Reality is if he was Aussie, they'd have used him in 15-20 tests max only in conditions like WACA or on one off dry wkts in subcontinent knowing he's an unreliable quick with a propensity to break down. He'd be the Shaun Tait to Brett Lee.

Shoaib apologists keep bringing up the fact that SA averages 25 compared to Lee's 30. Well Lee fronted up for long series and took the whoopings he got on flat wkts and made himself into something more than a speedgun. Akhtar would just tweak a groin and walk off when the going got tough. His career averages against Aus (35) and India (34) show real picture of what his numbers would look like if he fronted up like Lee consistently against good teams.

Pakistan was done after 2009 and then scandal . Under hafeez capataincy it was first time Pakistan failed to qualify for t20WC semi final in 2014 and he had strong teams in 2012 and 2014 editions . Misbah provided stability by winning in UAE but injected the defensive mindset in Pakistan team . It was only till 2017 Sarfraz changed the mindset and we got some good moments with fighting mindset till 2019 . Then came Babar and rest is history . So basically the respect Pakistan cricket got was due to 90s cricketers.

Hafeez was a typical self-serving, cowardly cricketer who by and large played for stats and his own survival.

And that rant in the clip is self-serving as well.

But nevertheless, where's the lie?

Pakistan after 1992 were mostly about having stage fright against India at the ICC events, being perpetual whipping boys of AUS and SAffers, and as Hafeez said - being utterly irrelevant when it came to World Cups and Champions Trophies.

The good times fans speak of were winning trilateral/quadrilateral tournaments in Sharjah and series wins against ENG and NZ. Passable achievements for a middling team.

He was poor against India in the 2 full series he played against them home and away in 04 and 07 despite chucking.

Watched the last 2 days of Delhi test in 2007 at the ground. Shoaib was built like those fat powerlifters and limped on the field, was always complaining and generally came across as a dramaqueen.

But he bowled quick and everyone at the ground paid attention when he had the ball. Created some anxious moments when he took out Jaffer and then clean bowled Dravid in quick time in India's run chase. Sachin walked in and just shut the game down like a boss. Laxman was also terrific facing Akhtar in the first inning.

He clarified that although Babar didn’t have a great impact on that triumph but the kids associate his name to the Trophy winning team. He made a hard hitting statement but said in the most polite manner
No kids does that.

Hafeez's comments, self-serving as they are, holds some truth.

Alongside the achievements of the 90s team are a shopping list of controversies which had damaging long-term consequences and set a terrible example to future generations.

I'd compare them to a football team of galacticos, each with planet sized egos and individual agendas which superceded the team's needs. Think of all the stupid fights over captaincy.

Despite what the nostalgia brigade say, it wasn't a sustainable formula for success. Waqar in a 2011 interview admitted they never paid much attention to video analysis or drew up gameplans, i.e. bowl this length to X batsman or set that field. It was about getting the ball to reverse as soon as possible and our natural talent would do its thing.

No wonder these same 90s players did little when becoming coaches.

1993-2008 pakistan legacy is same or below as 2014 - 2023 india. No trophies but good in bilaterals.

Usain Bolt, who has won eight Olympic gold medals, is a big fan of cricket. The gentleman’s game was his first love and not athletics.

Bolt followed Waqar Younis and Pakistan team when he was young.

“When I was really small I loved Pakistan cricket team. Waqar (Younis) was one of the greatest Pakistan bowlers ever, and I was a bowler, so I really enjoyed watching him. I was a big Pakistan fan until I got older when I noticed that I should actually support my home team,” added Bolt.

He is from Jamaica and shares a close bond with Chris Gayle and Andre Russell.

This is less a debate about the talent levels of 90s Pak cricketers but more of a reaction by more modern cricketers to the levels of entitlement and arrogance that they have in believing they alone are the be all and end all.

90s ke londay would not survive modern day cricket. High skilled players like Akram, Inzy, MoYo would adapt but the flash boys like Waqar, Shoaib, Mushtaq, Sohail would all be found out and ruthlessly exposed by modern analysts.

Nitpicking from Hafeez. While he gives Imran Khan credit for the 1992 World Cup victory, he fails to acknowledge the contributions of Wasim Akram and Inzamam. He mentions 2003 World Cup failure as well to further push his agenda. It's important to note that 2009 T20 World Cup semifinals and finals were won thanks to the performances of Shahid Afridi and Abdul Razzaq, who were part of the era Hafeez was criticizing.
Afridi falls within Gen Z :ifti He played till 2016

you need to see the full discussion. Afridi was mentioned as one of the 90s player. His international debut came before Akhtar.
lol I know, was just being sarcastic.

But on a serious note, he did win 2009 T20WC and was bowler of the tournament in 2007 t20WC too

He was player of the tournament for his allround prowess

Best bowlers of that tournament were Umar Gul and RP Singh

Said it right in front of a shell shocked Shoaib Akhtar yesterday in the studio who then said then who won all those matches against Bharat and kept a high W/L ratio against batch rivals to which Hafeez again said it was more of Imran Khan’s legacy than 90s team’s. 😳

I am not sure if i totally agree with this but with this statement Hafeez has touched a sensitive topic which not many 2010s, 2020s era Pakistan cricketers go. It’s usually a one way traffic with the 90s era cricketers bashing everyone who came after them. I think last i heard someone talking a similar tone was probably Shahid Afridi during his captaincy days.

Mohammad Hafeez speaking during a TV show:

"Winning an ICC event creates an inspiration among the fans. I am a huge fan of players from 90s, but when it comes to leaving a legacy, they left nothing for Pakistan cricket. They won no ICC event and lost badly in 1996, 99 and 2003. There was a time when we could win a final but ended up losing badly. They were mega-superstars but they couldn't inspire people by winning the ICC events. Then, things gradually changed as we faced difficulties. In 2009, we won the ICC T20 World Cup, although we had lost the 2007 final. In 2009, under Younis Khan’s captaincy, we managed to win, which brought a wave of inspiration.”

“Unfortunately, Pakistan cricket faced a major bad incident, which led to a long exile of cricket from the country, and we still haven't fully recovered from it. Then came the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy win, which was a huge inspiration. Today, people idolize Babar Azam, and the reason is that even though his role in that event wasn't a major one, he was a part of it. The 2017 trophy had a massive impact on Pakistan cricket, and it brought cricket back to the country.”

“Winning ICC events is very important. Unfortunately, the players from the 90s, despite their incredible talent and superstar status, couldn't win such events."

A bit blunt but it has a grain of truth. Indian players get ridiculed often for lack of ICC trophy wins, Tendulkar's career would have been called incomplete without the world cup win. Apart from the rain gift "kudrat ke Nizam" 92 World Cup win, what exactly is the legacy of Pakistani legends?? They had drug bans, match fixing, bottle caps, physical fights with players and fans, so many controversies to just name a few.

Why are Younis Khan and Sarfaraz Ahmed not given their due recognition for winning the rare ICC trophies??

Which country hasn't had controversies? :inti

If you still can’t see what Rashid is trying to do here,

-Rashid as always has been protecting this current players group through media campaigns. He’s the one who has been building false narratives regarding Babar, Rizwan and Shaheen, and he has always found a voice of affirmation in Dr Nauman Niaz.

-the entire, sudden focus on blame on the 90s players is to target Wasim Akram mainly who made a public demand/suggestion to the PCB chairman to change the entire team and core group of players.

- As a result, Babar and Rizwan have been dropped from the T20i side after this public plea by Wasim Akram.

+Instead of blaming the current players for the consistent failures and not living up to the high expectations from them (especially as Rashid Latif is one who has hyped them to the moon), you can see how it is now convenient to start a hate campaign against those who have nothing to do with your performances on the field.

@Slim

If the 90s players are the reason why your team crashed out against USA, and then in 4 days in your home tournament in 2024/25

Then who is to be credited for the 2009 World Cup win and then the 2017 Champions Trophy? Does the credit belong to the 50s Pakistan team?

Waqar Younis is actually the best example of what Hafeez said. Big aura, big hype but a habitual failure in every ICC event he played

Of course people remember Waqar Younis for those big inswing yorkers but he never produced it on big games ! His biggest memory in WC was getting whacked by Ajay Jadeja of all people

I think a big reason the 90s superstars keep berating the current generation only bcoz they used to thrash India regularly in the 90s unlike the 2000s & 2010 when India got the upper hand. every time India beats Pakistan these days- u willl see SHoaib Akhtar , Shahid Afridi, Waqar Younis gloating how they used to dominate India " hamare zamaane " unlike these poor sods who bring infamy to the nation. that obviously gets to the nerves of Hafeez, Malik & others
.
But it ignores the fact that India in the 90s was a bang average team. They sued to even lose to Zimababwe & Kenya in those days

Beating India in the 90s is as relevant as beating West Indies or Sri Lanka today

If the 90s generation players didn’t rate you, they apparently didn’t inspire you either.

Hafeez and Malik are around the same age but Malik was rated higher by Wasim and Co. They wanted to carry and build up Malik whilst Hafeez struggled. On top of it, Hafeez wasn’t really doing any justice to his talent either. The guy was averaging 20ish around 2004/5 and getting out cheaply time and time again. He only found a consistency to his game around 2010. It took him a long, long time to get his act right as a batter at least.

I guess it might have been Wasim Akram or Waqar Younis who might have coined the term Professor for Hafeez

Idk about legacies bit one thing is certain. With the exception of fakhar, no one else from the current unit is making it in an atg odi 15 for pakistan.

My opinion is this.

Who left what legacy is for the fans to talk about. But it’s disgraceful for a generation of players to speak like that of their seniors generation and mock them for lack of trophies or lack of wins. At the end of the day we own it all. The triumphs and the heart breaks are all a part of our continuous story.

Hafeez played a crucial role though after 2010. While not very consistent with the bat, he was a very important 5th bowler for us.

But I really liked Hafeez 3.0 when he learned to play more aggressive cricket after CPL. I really appreciate that the guy made an effort to improve his game and adapt to the modern day requirements which alot of players failed to do so.

bro, the 90s senior talk in a very bad tone regarding every player since 2004. The dumb remarks are coming from them mostly.

The fact that they were involved in match fixing, losing tournaments and only won 1 tournament due to Imran, they still see themselves as relevant and important.

Funny thing is Akhtar falls no where as he never won anything.

Does he know the meaning of legacy?

2Ws
Saqlain
Saeed
Akhtar
Inzy
Even Ijaz

They didn't leave any legacy?

Ye kya khata kya hai ye?

It's harsh to say that no lagacy of players from 90s. Pakistan was a consistent third best test and ODI team in 90s. After 90s, I don't think Pakistan was ever in the top 3 in both formats consistently.

If you start making all time XI for Pakistan in test and ODI, lots of players from 90s will make the cut. May be more than half spots will be taken by players who played in 90s.

Pakistan carried hafeez like characters in their team. Too much.
Hafeez only became extremely vocal when guys like Inzimam, Yousuf and Shoaib Akhtar had left, and Younis was having his own tiffs with the PCB. He was a nobody until 2010 as a player, and he became a loud mouth trouble maker after 2011-12

This is a comprehensive list of success and failures of the 90's team vs the post 90's team. Which team has had the better successes and worst failures overall? Is there any truth to what Mohammad Hafeez is saying in the media regarding the 90's team?

The LEGACY, Hafeez v Steyn

Vol.1, Vol.2, Vol3, Hafeez was epitome of mediocrity all his career , he should be the last one to talk about legacy.

What does he thinks , is he greater than Wasim, Waqar, Akhtar, Saeed , Inzi

Infact Hafeez wont find a place in 90s squad let alone playing XI

Yup, just someoe sharing his Steyn dismissals compilation and Steyns laughter against him will be enough to remind Hafeez about the legacy he left behind.

Pakistan did not win in Australia , lost badly throughout.

90s cricketers have had some dull moments like losing 1999 final where they should have won the title. Fixing allegations but this has been a norm in Pakistan cricket.

90s cricketers have more legacy IMO. People remember wasim, waqar, Inzimam, Miandad, shoaib etc.
Not many to remember in the current era. Hafeez might have forgot that he himself has nothing much to show overall in his career.

From Cape Town to Cape Dhabi

Epic, compilation fitting commentary by Waqar. What was he trying to do , godly reaction at the end by Steyn.

Meanwhile Kohli, Rohit, Dhoni, Gill have all said they were inspired to play cricket by Sachin and wanted to be like him.

That's real legacy, like Ned Stark's legacy vs Tywin's lack of legacy

100s of Pakistani ex cricketers and millions of their fans at the same thing these days and that’s not an issue.

Sunil Gavaskar says this and it’s an issue.
