Stats are nearly identical. Gambhir a bit better batting stats, but Hafeez is obviously the better bowler.

Both are pretty good captains/tacticians in the shorter formats.

Who was the better player overall?

Gambhir won his team 2 World Cup finals  Hafeezs best chance was Mohali 2011 but he bottled it

Gambhir averages 40 at a SR of 85 and Hafeez averages 32 with a SR of 75. There is a major difference in their stats.

Gambhir is better in all 3 formats.

Gambhir is better in all 3 formats.

Hafeez with the ball- Average of 36 with economy of 4.13 in ODIs, Ave. 34 econ. 2.67 in Tests, Ave 24, econ. 6.7 in T20Is.

Gambhir couldn't bowl at all.

Gambhir at his peak was better than Hafeez at his peak. In fact Gambhir was one of the top batsmen in the world at his peak.

However, currently Hafeez is better. Gambhir is a hack these days.

Funny pics in the OP...Hafeez with the bat and Gambhir with the ball....if that is the comparison, then probably Hafeez

Gambhir was way ahead of Hafeez in terms of batting, but Hafeez was an all rounder, one of the best LOI all rounder for a few years back in the day. not easy to compare their overall worth when one is a batsman only and one is an all rounder

Hafeez could have been an excellent utility player for Pak had he had more heart, dropped down the order and had a legal action.

Sadly he had none of the 3.

But was an excellent timer of the ball and an entertaining bat to watch.

On a serious note...Gambhir is leagues ahead as a cricketer....not batsman....not any other caveats....just as a cricketer...Gambhir all the way.

Gambhir was a champion cricketer and a double World Cup winner. Hafeez has served Pakistan well since his comeback but there really is no comparison.

Statistics aside, Hafeez is personable, noncontroversial and is a gentleman. Gambhir is arrogant.

As a cricketer, Gambhir used to have a better all round game than Hafeez in all conditions and all formats.

Captaincy wise, there isn't much sample size but Gambhir wins it because of his IPL exploits.

Gambhir produced an 11-hour knock to save a test match in Napier, he kept his head when wickets were falling all around him to hit a 70+ in a World 20/20 final, he scored a world cup final match winning 97 when chasing after his side were 30 odd for 2.

Sure he had a lot of flaws and apart from a short 3-4 year window he's had a disappointing career but he's still been a better cricketer than Hafeez imo.

What controversies does Gambhir have? Gambhir has never been banned for anything cricket related as far as I know.....Hafeez might be feeding hungry kids in Africa in his spare time but that doesn't make him a better cricketer.

youtube and see his arguments on the field with Kohli. His off field comments on Dhoni- the one man responsible for his resurrection. Look at his comments on Pakistan. He has a very nasty behaviour for his size

LOL! i think the original poster clearly said that Gambhir was way better than Hafeez.

Hafeez is not even half a player of what gambhir was. Comparing hafeez to gambhir is gambhir's insult honestly. He is a far superior batsman of what hafeez is

Gambhir was nothing special tbh. He looked like a hack. Hafeez meanwhile is one of the classiest players I have seen.

That cover drive! Wow wow wow!! :raja

Unfortunately, anyone becomes special when you compare him with the "blessed in all facet".

I have difficulty analyzing Hafeez's fielding prowess. He is usually safe, but a lot of times just drops them out of nowhere.

Hafeez would have had better stats had he dropped himself down the order... but sadly hubris got the better of him.

A lot of people saying Gambhir is way ahead; But in keep in mind that both of them have 11 and 9 ODI and Test hundreds respectively.

Hafeez has played 39 more ODI innings and 39 more T20I innings.

Sir Hafeez is also not done yet:hafeez2, he's also the future Pak captain as he has the ashirwad of Misbah. Hafeez might have poorer stats as compared to loud mouth gambhir, but hafeez still knows how to get into the team, even without performance ;-)

Then what is the meaning of this comparison? One is a genuine opening batsman who was ranked number one in test cricket in 2009, and was awarded the ICC test player of the year award, while the other is a bits and pieces LOI cricketer. There is a small matter of one, being the highest scorer in 2 LOI ICC finals for the winning side.

Hey genius.. With your logic... What do you think of Don Bradman and Ricky Ponting and hafeez?

People have to remember that GG stats are till 2012 , and the way he batted in loi between 2007 -12 , he would have averaged over 45 in last 5 years .

This thread comparison

Gambhir was the top Batsmen for nearly a year or so, has the most consecutive 50+ in test record.
Hafeez just bits and pieces player.

Seriously, how do you even compare?:hafeez2

Here is a gem of stat with regards to Bowling:

Gambhir has better bowling Strike Rate than HAfeez in First class and List A cricket :)))
Rayyman :Now talk na!! :kp

Gambhir deserves to be compared with Saed Anwar and not gutless cricketers like Hafeez.

Gambhir vs Anwar is a better comparison. Remember Gambhir has two great knocks in ICC tournament finals (WC +WT20) and his knock in Napier was one of the best knock ever played by Asian batsmen in NZ conditions.

He was one of top players between 2007-11.

Bring on Saed Anwar for a comparison not the likes of Hafeez.

I don't know about the thinking behind comparing hafeez with gambhir, come on there is no comparison between them, honestly speaking hafeez only can compare with any oridiniary first class player in Pakistan who can only perform on flat tracks against oridiniary spinners, against quality bowling or even on good tracks he always struggle, he was played all his cricket due to his bowling and 95% runs he scored against third class Sri Lanka bowling in UAE or in Bangladesh where he faced spinner mostly, and about professor of cricket, who can't be professor if someone play these many years international cricket, he has to play only first class cricket in Pakistan

All these people Indian fans making Gambhir sound like a legend LOOL. Hafeez was and still is the better player. If you look at stats, in ODI's, Hafeez and Gambhir both have 11 centuries and average 40. Gambhir batted with Ganguly, Sehwag, Tendulkar and much recently Dhawan, all terrific openers. SO obviously, he had much less work to do and much less pressure. Hafeez on the other hand never even had a partner and the ones he did have consisted of guys like Awais Zia, Imran Nazir, Ahmed Shehzad, Imran Farhat, a poor Sharjeel Khan, Nasir Jamshed and other poor guys who I don't even remember. So, despite all of this, he averaged the same as him despite barely ever getting to bat at home.

In Tests, Gambhir mostly got to bat at home and Hafeez never played in Pakistan IIRC yet the have almost the same average. Yet again, Gambhir was in terrific company so less pressure. Now more so because Laxman and Dravid were legends in Tests.

As for t/20's, I don't think anyone can argue Hafeez is STILL a much better player than Gambhir ever was.

Now lets talk about the bowling. Hafeez at one stage of his career was the No.1 ODI bowler, IIRC and would have stayed if not for BCCI conspiracies but that's another topic and I don't want to talk about that here. So anyway, as far as being the better player is concerned, Hafeez would walk into any team at peak in either bowling or batting, not so much for Gambhir.

:)) Good joke.

:)) Good joke.

I just saw that. :harby Regardless, doesn't make much of a difference. Hafeez would've have averaged higher than 40 had he played in Pakistan more. The hundreds he hit in UAE would surely have been bigger hundreds.

No place for 'ifs' and 'buts'in cricket, the only thing that matters are the results achieved by teams and individual players.

I think its pretty clear he's the better player regardless of that.

Retro Hafeez was the best player and cannot be compared to Gambhir who was just a batsman.

Majority of the posters here don't see it as clearly.

Majority of the Indian posters. I would expect the sane Indian posters to think otherwise however. Hafeez was never an extraordinary player but leagues ahead of Gambhir even at his worst.

Regardless of what? One averages 40 odd while the other averages 32 odd (ODI cricket). What's there to compare? Not to mention Gambhir has an SR of 85 odd while Hafeez has an SR of 75 odd.

Go through the posts again, will surely help.

Professor Hafeez could not hold a candle to Gambhir. Ghambir avgs 50 in SA vs Steyn and Co I believe while we all know how professor Hafeez wets his pants at the thought of Steyn :)...

:))) .

Gambhir held Top rank in Test Cricket for quite some time.Had the record of most consecutive 50+ scores in Tests.
Hafeez is a bits and pieces cricketer who was never even in top 10 by any parameter, not batsman, not bowler, not all rounder, through out his career.

PS: Gambhir has better SR than Hafeez in bowling (overall first class and List A games) :kp

Lool and you're ignoring each and everything else I've mentioned. Very mature of you to fetch out a couple out a couple of statements for your own use from the bigger comment. Hafeez is galaxies ahead of him as cricketer for the simple fact of being the No.1 bowler in the world at his peak whereas Gambhir was not even a part timer.

Hafeez has been ranked #1 all-rounder in both ODIs and T20Is. He has also been a Top 10 bowler in ODIs.

Bringing in Hafeez's bowling stats is stupid argument. Obviously Gambhir hasn't bowled, so what's there to compare?

Batting front, I don't think anyone who is not biased will have a doubt that Gambhir was much better batsman in all 3 formats. Clutch player and at his peak he was amongst the best in the world.

Hafeez was the number one ranked alrounder at one point, I don't think the numbers you posted are accurate.

I pulled it from the official ranking site bro. You can verify!
If its wrong someone should send ICC a letter.

Alright, the site seems incredibly buggy when trying to pull out comparison rating or rankings. But honestly, this comparison is absurd to say the least.

As for all rounder rankings, Herath is in top 10 for quite some time as an allrounder. Some thing to think about.

In Test matches. Where there are barely any all-rounders.

Hafeez averages more than 36 with the ball :))

Now if that's what makes him better than Gambhir (since he ain't half the batsman that Gambhir is), then let it be so.

Hafeez is close to GG as a batsman.

Averaging 36 is better than averaging infinity.

Hafeez is a better overall package than Gambhir. If Gambhir has a bad day with the bat, then he is done, he cannot contribute alot more to the side, Hafeez on the other hand can bowl plenty of economical overs and snag a wicket here or there.

Hafeez was ranked the best alrounder at one point, was Gambhir ranked best anything?

#1 Test batsman in late 2009.

I don't know why this discussion getting longer, I am Pakistani and love Pakistan cricket but there is no comparison between hafeez n GG, hafeez just a ordiniary player

Hafeez was a utility cricketer, but Gambhir during the 07-11 period was one of the best bats in the world. He has 2 really memorable innings in world tournament finals.

Hafeez, unfortunately, could not hit the same heights.

I didn't know this about Gambhir. I was only a kid back then. Ever since I have followed cricket, Hafeez and Gambhir have been equal. That is after 2011. One could argue that though Gambhir was great from 07-11, Hafeez was just as good a player overall from 11-15.

Gambhir as a person may not be very likeable but the guy was one heck of a pressure player and arguably the best player of spin bowling in last 10 years.
Have won important matches for India like 2007 t20 wc final and 2011 odi wc final.

Lol theres no comparison in any format
