Mohammad Hafeez's century the highlight of Day 1 of the 1st Test between Pakistan and Australia

Cummins would have been cannon fodder, on evidence of Starc’s performance so far.

Tremain and Maxwell are available for selection, but not been picked.

Yeah i know man. Australian selectors giving Indian selectors a run for their money in terms of stupid selections. Not saying Australia had a chance anyway but still. Picking Peter Siddle? That's a very stupid selection. Starc's not bowling the UAE length. Overpitching everything.

Babar Azam should play at 4 and Asad Shafiq at 6. There has been no indication from Asad that he has taken over the leadership role from Misbah so for him to bat at 4 is not right and also the fact that Asad has done really well for Pakistan at 6. At 4, Babar gets to play the old ball which is much better for him.

Think it's the right decision considering Siddle's experience in these conditions. Haven't seen Tremain bowl much besides some ODIs in South Africa, but he's no workhorse like either Siddle or Hazlewood.

Already seeing a different Lyon this time. Bowling much outside off stump as compared to 2014 when he bowled too much on off stump and middle stump. Also his pace is quick - around 58 mph which is what it needs to be in the UAE. Loopy spin bowlers who bowl at 48 MPH will never do well in the UAE.

If they wanted a work horse who's not past it then maybe Jackson bird?

Holland looks like he doesn't know how to bowl in the UAE. Flight and slow pace does not work in the UAE. Younis would have taken Holland to the cleaners here.

Babar Azam should be at number twelve.

Garbage of a cricketer.

Neither are Bilal Asif's FC numbers inspiring, nor is his age promising. Why are Pak wasting their time with him?

First hour to Pakistan. Australia look clueless in these conditions. You have to bowl extremely defensively on these wickets and just limit the scoring. Just don't have bowlers to do that.

I slept mid way of the innings and then ramiz bhai woke me up saying imran khan invited them over after the oath taking and they were still calling him either skipper or imran bhai and that imran compared virat to sachin and said virat is a global super star.

Good start. People going on how Imam looks shaky out there and Hafeez shouldn't be playing. But I want a win. Last time we defeated a good Test cricket side (i.e. not West Indies or below) was 2015 vs England in UAE. I'll take even a weakened Australian test series win, it's a step up. Start making UAE feel like a fortress again.

Imam looking well set at crease. Hope he goes on to convert into a big score

Why is Steve Okeefe who led Australia to victory against India last time not playing?

He had a number of alcohol and attitude related problems come up over the years. Given the fallout over the team culture and cheating scandal and the desire to change that, he missed the A Tour and thus the squad.

He didn't take many wickets at all when cricket started back up in September so they looked elsewhere.

First 2-3 days are boring in U.A.E the real fun begins on 4th and 5th day. Where things speeds up. Quite the opposite

Absolute road of a pitch. This is so boring. at least make pitch more helpful for bowlers to make for an interesting game. We should not take serious anyone scoring on these flat roads.

It's an ominous sign for Pakistan. It's a flat road and Hafeez is banking on it and cementing his place again in the team. Pakistan has been haunted again by a pretty mediocre player. I am sure he will be in 2019 WC squad. Pakistan cricket is going backwards...

agreed. Series like these serve ttfs to cement their places. This is false hope that we have seen in the past so many times getting exposed. Sarfraz must be licking his lips to smash these spinners to his hundred and shut up the haters about his performance. lol

You sure have a lot of confidence in Pak batters. More helpful conditions for bowlers probably would’ve meant we’d be down by 3 or 4 wickets by now.

I think we just need to appreciate the openers have done well.

Grind Aus into dust by batting six sessions. Holland and Siddle are anyway not threats. Only need to watch against Lyon and occasional Starc burst.

In article on ESPN it is stated that Bilal Asif can bowl the doosra thanks to his strong wrists according to Mushtaq Ahmed. Excited to see if he will bowl it in this match.

Cummins is australias best fast bowler. He is one of the rare bowlers who bowls well in subcontinent conditions. He was really impressive in india and bangladesh, on rank turners. Cummins would have been very handy on these flat roads and maintains decent line and length throughout every over of his test match and produces bounce when there is none, he is better than starc in these conditions .

Pakistan is lucky cummins is injured.

Maxwell, Handscomb are good players of spin, they should have been picked.

starc and siddle are bowling very well, why take them out of the attack? hafeez is a superb player of spin bowling. get him out early with seam with new ball. dont bowl lyon until hafeez is out.

Cummins is a hit-the-deck bowler, and UAE wickets are graveyards for this style of bowling. Pakistan would have feasted on his half trackers. Not saying Siddle is a massive upgrade on Cummins, but with Holland being so inexperienced they needed a workhorse at the other end to keep Starc fresh.

Hafeez will play for another 2 or 3 years. And with Sarfraz struggles as captain I wouldn't be surprised if he take the captaincy soon as well.
