Mohammad Rizwan "I saw how Asad Shafiq batted with the tail and learnt a lot from watching him"

Mohammad Rizwan speaking after play today in a virtual press conference:

This is Test cricket and sometimes you will get good partnerships across the 5 days and the match can fluctuate. South Africa has some good batsmen, but we have some good bowlers and I feel that we will succeed once this partnership is broken.

When I started my innings yesterday the pitch was unplayable and I managed to get through that difficult period and I went on to make a century. The pitch has improved but there is still something in it especially for the spinners. The South African batsmen counter-attacked today but tomorrow is another day.

Every match is important to win and our aim is always to win every match. Before this match we had a meeting and we all said that we will not go for a draw and we all agreed that we wanted to win the series 2-0. This was the message that was also given to us from the captain and the coach and not to think about a draw. We are still on that plan and have this mindset.

Yesterday I was struggling a bit, finding the edge but I decided to counter-attack. The Almighty always rewards the brave and I decided that I would bat in a brave way rather than play defensively. At one point it looked like we would just get a lead of 230-240 on this pitch but our bravery took us to a lead of 370.

You have to learn to bat with the tail and at this level you cannot make any excuses such as that you were batting with the tail. Asad Shafiq batted well with the tail and Shahid Aslam said to me that I should learn from Asad Shafiq on how to bat with the tailenders. Batting with the tailenders is tough and I watched how Asad Shafiq batted with the tail and learnt a lot from watching him.

I still believe that this pitch is good for the spinners but 2 pace bowlers have taken 5fers in the match and of course Linde has too. It’s all about breaking the current partnership and tomorrow is a fresh day and our strength is our bowling and I’m sure we’ll get into them.

Prayers are with me and they do help in my success. Cricket is all about pressure, whether it’s domestic cricket, club cricket. You will get a good ball at whatever level you are playing at. Even Under-15 or Under-16 level a young bowler can get you out by bowling a good ball.

To me it doesn’t matter who the opponent is, Bangladesh, South Africa or Australia - the fact is that whoever plays best on the day and handles the pressure best, will win the match.

I believe in hard work and the rest is up to the Almighty. If my effort and hard work is less than the opponent then I won’t succeed. I always try to avoid putting myself under pressure and like to play with a positive mindset and open mind.

A lot of my team-mates gave me advice overnight and this morning. Yasir Shah was teasing me saying that he doesn’t consider me a batsman as I haven’t scored a century and if you score a century today then I will accept you as a batsman, as even I can score 50s.

When I went back to the pavilion after the innings ended Sarfaraz Ahmed hugged me. It’s a team game, it’s healthy competition between Sarfaraz and I but we have a lot of respect and admiration for each other.

We are all focussed on serving our country and playing for the star which is on the chest of our shirt. It doesn’t matter whether we are from Sindh, Balochistan or Karachi, we are all focussed on the same goal. We may be from different regions or play for different teams in domestic cricket but when we play for our country we are one.

I hope he was being sarcastic when he said that

earlier in his career, shafiq did play many good innings in the UAE.

Plus, shafiq had perofrmed in Australia in the past, i think it was Gabba where he gave that perofrmance.

As usual, ttonty fans here will hate him

Shafiq is underrated on Asian conditions.

not really, an average of 48 might look good, but plenty of other middle order batsmen outperformed him in the tests he played.

performance in tests asad shafiq played in asia, minimum 500 runs scored, excluding openers:

Shafiq is underrated because he isn’t in the team anymore.

No difference between Shafiq and Fawad. Both are high 30s averaging batsmen. At least Shafiq was good to watch.

I wouldn’t mind him opening either. Can be a decent makeshift opener and do a better job than “specialists” like Masood, Abid and Butt.

Shafiq had a few good innings with the tail, ie Gabba, Hundred in 3rd test SL 2012, hundred in 2017 2nd test against SL, a few others earlier in his career. But most of his innings failed to result in wins. Neither of the three mentioned hundreds resulted in wins.

Inzi and Younis were extremely good batters with tail. Inzi probably one of the best. Inzi's 92* with a broken finger in SA 07, 138* against Ban 2003, his knock with Mushi against Aus, 100 against WI 2005, and many others.

Younis was also brilliant, his 200* against Zim 2013, 218 against Eng 2016, and a few others.

Lara, Mike Hussey and Laxman were also extremely good while batting with tail.

Exactly. If India can do that then why not us?

Why invest in flop opening options rather than people who have done it in the past. If Azhar wants to play he should only open the innings. Someone like Asad might at the least score one fifty in a series compared to flops like Shan, Abid or Imran.

Why can't we think out of the box?

Confident guy is Rizwan.

Has faith in his own ability and knows his strengths.

Pakistan needs more players like him, rather than mentally weak cricketers we keep producing.

It's because he always wilted under pressure, no one doubted his talent.

In my opinion Asad didn't have a problem with pressure. He has a few good performances under pressure, Lords 2016 he rescured the innings with Misbah from something like 64/4 and in SA he put up a 200 hundred run partnership coming in at 30/4 if I recall correctly and then he fought out a draw in Palekelle. The real problem with Shafiq was that he just wasn't consistent enough and couldn't string together a few good performances, demonstrated by the fact that he was never able to score 2 centuries in a single series. His usual returns were 1x100 and 1x50 in a series with low scores in the rest of the innings. A guy, who more often than not, had no real contribution would obviously have many failures in pressure situations and those just tend to stick out in the minds of fans.

He's definitely trolling.

He must be.

Shafiq is the guy you don't watch if you want to get better.

Lol... by and large Shafiq was a terrible player with the tail.
Could not score boundaries and invariably it would be on the tailender to score runs, while he himself would just sit in and hope for the best.

The gabba knock which everyone is mentioning was aided with great contributions from Amir, Wahab and Yasir who;
(a) are not bunnies and can hold a bat, and on that occasion played out of their skins.
(b) They also faced the same amount of deliveries in the partnership that a batsman would; Shafiq didn't try to farm the strike.

Playing with the tail is a great and rare skill that very few batsmen have.
You have to have great composure and self belief; something Shafiq never had. This together with the ability to clear the boundary or find the finest of gaps to score boundaries because the field is all on the fence.

Inzi, younus, lara, Hussey, Steve Waugh are some of the best guys i have seen at this.
They were all great players under pressure with immense self belief. They also knew how to pace the innings, and had the ability to hit and clear the boundaries.

There are so many examples of them playing great knocks with total bunnies at the other end.

The best player with the tail was VVS Laxman. He would farm the strike for atleast 4 deliveries every over and would take a single of the 4th or 5th delivery of the over leaving the bowler just 1-2 deliveries to get the tail ender out and as a result the bowler would strive extra hard and the tailender batsman was competent enough to not get out.

VVS would also score a few boundaries in the first 4-5 deliveries he would face every over and before you know it, you see he has a last wicket partnership of 70-80 and the tail ender is 5-10 runs not out.

Sometimes this method does not work and the tail ender has to end up facing a full over and when he manages to get a single of the first few deliveries it adds to the frustration of the opposition

Ultimately in the end tail enders need to hold their own as well because if a tail ender is virtually useless, all it takes a world class bowler is one delivery

Rizwan won't be able to do jack if the likes of Hasan Ali, Yasir Shah, Nauman Ali don't know how to bat at all

Burn for Shafiq haters

Should not be.

It seems like Rizwan’s vantage point is 2016 ENG and AUS.

Given Rizwan’s age and proximity to the squad post 2015, he can be excused for the comparison.

If he starts being just as effective as Shafiq that will be a different thing though.

Not tempted to change Rizwan’s batting position though.

Fawad is better against pace as per my observations but Shafiq is still slightly better against spin, the likes.

Shafiq also rallied with the tail quite often, but failed to be a shadow of himself when Misbah and Younis retired.

Still I feel as though we needed to play Shafiq at 6, where he scored quite a few runs. Was at his best at that position.

Nevertheless, we had to move on, and we shall be doing the same in two years or so if Fawad does not put up consistent performances.

Fawad opening won't work outside Asia, against a swinging ball he didn't convince me back in England.

Azhar opening is a better short-term solution.

I'd maybe consider shifting Rizwan up to 5, I think that he could score a lot more runs batting alongside better batsmen.

Don't like this from Rizwan - Shafiq is probably the worst example in anything related to cricket especially on battting with the tail where he has failed to achieve this multiple times.

He is right. He learnt what not to do while batting with the tail.

The advice regarding following Asad Shafiq's tactics when batting with the tail came from coach Shahid Aslam.

Quite a surprising comment, I think he's just being nice to Shafiq since he got the boot. Shafiq was one of the biggest mental midgets in the team and we've had quite a few over the years.

I would happily take Asad Shafiq in place any of from the lot of our supposedly "openers", and make him open the innings.
Asad can't get any worse than them. And he is an excellent fielder too.

Rizwan is way ahead of Asad Shafiq, this was a match winning hundred (Shafiq never had one) . Please, don't make that Choker your role model.

Thing is Shafiq is still young and has airtight technique so just give him time he will come good.

I hope he was being sarcastic when he said that

Sounds like a fake statement. It was Sarfraz that played well with the tail. Not Asad Shafiq. Unless he is talking about that Gabba Innings. Rizwan is already miles ahead of Asad Shafiq.
Rizwan is making tough runs, coming to rescue regularly (that was what MIsbah and YK did) Not Asad 'Too scared of pressure' Shafiq.

Everyone should learn from the great Asad Shafiq. He was that good that Pak has stopped picking him for the Test side!:misbah
