So is his decision to bowl first the correct one?
 
Hope a good show by Rizwan, looks like man with strong nerves, plays well under pressure. Lets see.
 
WI also bowed first after winning the toss in both the matches. Cant really say they lost the matches due to their call rather lack of execution.

I think its a fair call. Bowlers need to ball the right areas to have any chance against NZ batting.

Decision is correct, but is our bowling attack strong enough to take advantage of the green conditions? Let's see. As I am typing this, a wicket just fell yeh!!
 
Tough to judge captaincy with a weak team in NZ in a short series.
Would get a better idea when we play at home or UAE.

Sarfraz's captaincy was abysmal in UAE, and was not helped by having pace pro coach who didn't like playing 2 spinners.
 
he seems proactive, and fairly self confident in the way he carries himself. giving nasim a second spell so quickly after his abysmal first spell is brave too.

can think of many other former pak captains who would go to abbas instead.

The bowler asked for a change of end. This wasn’t exactly a brave move
 
Pretty proactive and isn't doing the typical. I doubt any Pak captain would have given Yasir this many overs in the first session on a greenish wicket with four other pacers.

Tbf to him his hand was forced because Naseem’s first spell was abysmal. But Yasir had to keep going because he was giving nothing away.

Someone like Azhar would have brought back Abbas for a few overs. Also Abbas is used to bowling long spells.

Obviously its too early and these are little things, but not much wrong until now except that review.

Decision to bowl - defensive - ill advised?
 
Haven't seen any difference to what the script was. Shaheen/Abbas to start off every session with 3-4 over spells and then replaced by Faheem and Naseem. Did not try Haris or Fawad finger spin to test the bounce and stuck with Yasir blindly.

Fielding positions were standard with a third slip gap as usual. It is what the script says, whether Azhar, Babar or Rizwan is the skipper.
 
Review on KW which should have been taken at the end of the day - why was it not?

"I asked for a review and they said it was 50/50 - I felt it hit the toe of his boot first but the skipper said it hit his bat first - so we didnt take the review - I suppose that's part of the game"

Rizwan far too excited behind the wickets to judge any review. Last person to consult with at all times

Lol he's been very good so far. Extremely unlucky with all those drop catches and that one LBW.

We can not judge his captaincy in this match because he is not the captain- he is the stand-in captain. Firstly, Misbah and Waqar management has alot of control over decisions that is why you do not see alot of out of box captaincy during the tenure. Add into it Babar Azam who was seen near the boundary line telling Abbas what to do. It might look great in our culture but these practices are not common in successful companies, organizations and teams. When Rizwan was appointed captain for one test, it should mean Babar has to sit and watch as a spectator, Misbah and Waqar have to give advices where necessary but the leadership is solely given to Rizwan. Once the test is over, Rizwan should be told thank you for taking the leadership role but now Babar is the leader and Babar gets the same treatment now.
Confidence and backing should be given to the captain and leadership is something which has to be entrusted. Rizwan taking the review when Azhar said so shows he does not have the legitimacy as a captain. Babar has legitimacy but he does not get the confidence and backing required for leadership.
The issue with Misbah and Waqar is not that they are useless like Intikhab Alam it is the opposite they interfere too much and do not back the players to play the natural game.

The review has been his biggest mistake but I guess it was a marginal call so can’t blame him too much. However I think most captains in the world would have taken that review especially against the opposition’s main batsman.
 
Pathetic and poor (unless there is a reason) for not having come up to the stumps for Abbas post lunch on Day 1.

Showed tremendous ability doing it in ENG so very surprised here.

The commentators were talking about this today, but this was the thought on my mind on day 1 spell 1.

Add to that the CONTINUED problem from the England tour where the slips are too deep! How many times have we said this in England???

And then that atrocious missed review.

I really am not impressed with Rizwaan. It's just a joke.
 
NZ commentators all praises for him, the only real detractors are Pakistanis. I’ve enjoyed his captaincy.

Completely agree with thinking outside the box when things are not working in your favour. Dummy captain or not it’s the taught process that counts at the end of the day, you can follow the script your are given but shouldn’t be afraid to have your touch in it.

Especially in the last few sessions they could have tried that out. They kept Abbas ineffective which is a pity.
 
Pretty clueless imo but I guess he's there to learn on the job.

Very predictable, brings on his strike bowler when expected. Doesnt stand up to the stumps to Abbass. Puts in a short leg to a leggie with little to no bounce. Has fielders standing at mid off or mid on not saving the single or not tempting to the batsmen to hit over the top.

Worst of all, he's dropped his head now. He doesnt look like a natural captain, should have gone with someone like Sohail who has a better cricket brain.
 
I don’t understand why are the bowlers are constantly bowling at 125-135 km range why hasn’t captain walked up to bowlers and asked them to bend their back I remember why couple years back Amir did the same Sarfraz threw him under the bus

The bowlers he has that even the greatest captains can't do anything about it
 
Captain's knock from Rizwan - tough for him am sure but doing well on 53*
 
He has been very good & smart since the start of the game, has set aggressive fields (unseen of from a PAK captain except Imran), rotated well whatever trundlers he has and now showing exemplary guts with the bat

Have some shame criticising a player who has saved Pakistan from an embarrassing follow on. What can he do with such a pathetic batting and mediocre bowling. It was a splendind fighting knocm from Rizwan despite added captaincy pressure.

Where have I criticised his Test batting as much as I have criticised his ODI and T20 batting? If it makes you guys happy, enjoy it.

We are going to lose this Test unless rain saves us. The thread is about his captaincy and not his batting by the way.

People like you are pure cringe. Criticise people who are performing and leave everyone else. Pakistan won only one t20 on this tour and that too had MOTM contribution from Rizwan. Rizwan is here to stay whether you like it or not.

I said it three months ago, but Rizwan is better suited to the captaincy than Babar.

He’s smarter and he’s a tough competitor.

I don’t think Babar has Rizwan’s leadership skills or his analytical skills.
 
If the main batsmen in this Test showed half as much guts and determination as Rizwan has, Pakistan wouldn't be in the mess they are in.

Areas to improve, but can't fault his fight, spirit and determination.
 
Rizwan can become great player for Pakistan for a long period of time in all formet .one of the Pakistan player along with babar i like very very much. Keep going lad ,All the best .

Can’t really blame him for missed catches and overthrows. His DRS usage needs to improve though.
 
Today is the day where we will see what Rizwan is made of. He has two options in front of him:

1) Try to bat out the day and salvage a draw
2) Try to take on the NZ bowlers and look to score those 300 runs to win.

I firmly believe, whichever approach Rizwan takes here, a defeat is inevitable.

However, the approach Rizwan takes here will define his captaincy and the direction in which he wants Pakistan to go. I remember Kohli took on the Aussies in Adelaide few years back when they needed more than 350 runs on the last day to win. Despite the fact that India lost that game, it laid the marker of Kohli's captaincy and Indian cricket direction.

Now Rizwan has that opportunity today to put Pakistan on that win-at-all-cost direction. Let's see what he decides. If we see the same try-to-block method to stave off defeat, then Rizwan will be just another cog in the wheel.

Rizwan does not make the decision and fans should know that. He is a stand-in captain and these kind of decisions are made by Misbah and management. But what I can tell you Azhar Ali and Fawad have the capacity to stay longer but not score at the required rate whereas Rizwan and Faheem have the ability to score runs but can not stay for as long as what Azhar and Fawad can. Pakistan will try to play out the overs initially but once one of Azhar and Fawad gets out we might see the shots. Game would be only interesting if
1) Fawad and Azhar play out the first session. Pakistan will go out for a draw then.
2) One of the player gets out early and Rizwan gets set and plays the natural game allowing Faheem to attack too later. That will make us closer.
The highest probability is we will get out under 200 confused thinking rather to attack or defend.
 
i dont think they will go for the win.they should try and bat the first session without losing a wicket.
 
If we pull off the draw here, surely Rizwan deserves the Nishan-e-Pakistan!

How in the blue h*ll have we taken this game into Lunch day 5?!
 
He’s going to be a fantastic vice-captain for Babar. Seems to listen to players around him and open to trying things. Overall pretty good showing. Seems like responsibility brings out a better side of him.
 
I feel tempted to let Rizwan continue as Test skipper. He seems to be relishing the responsibility and fight.

Let Babar focus on his batting
 
I absolutely HATE Wicket-keepers as Captain, but have to say Rizwan looked better than Babar. Best thing could be Babar to run the show and Rizwan support him wholeheartedly.

Ian Chappell’s go to guy was Rod Marsh, (one of the best cricket minds ever who was Australia’s academy director for almost 2 decade between late 1980s to mid 2000s - the period when they unleashed some of the fiercest beasts of the game ever seen from that academy) who never led Australia; neither Allen Knott (the go to guy of Tony Greig, who left for WSC with his captain, otherwise would have played like 125 Tests).
 
Rizwan comes as a natural leader having led KP, Peshawar, Pakistan A at the domestic and list A level and he is a fighter. He should remain as captain IMO
 
Can Mohammad Rizwan captain the team in Tests?

Yes I know what youre thinking but hear me out. Babar, when offered the captaincy, said he didnt want it. He wanted to score as many runs as possible for Pakistan, I believe him.

Rizwan seems a better test captain in every way. He is aggressive, wants to not just win but dominate other teams, in their own backyard. I must admit as optimistic as I sometimes believe myself to be, my personal strategy after tea yesterday was to tuk-tuk NZ into oblivion. This is what Misbah would have done. Rizwan said no and went for the win instead. Yes, he came up short, but this kind of jigra you dont find every millennium. He is the quintessential Pakistani cricketer in almost every possible way. Why not give him a chance, if Babar truly just wants to bat.

I know this is wishful thinking and if Babar wants the captaincy he should rightfully have a go at it, but when it was offered to Babar he was the only decent choice. Now we have two. Not a bad problem to have, maybe in a year or two.
 
I like his attitude, would prefer him as a captain in tests to Babar. Babar has the added responsibility of carrying the team, and if he hits a bad patch, the whole team gets affected
 
Yeah he’s good. If Babar fails down the line (hopefully not) and if Rizwan is still performing then why not.
 
Why can't you people just let the guy play? Make him open, make him captain, take gloves off him. Lol he is doing well in his current role. Just leave him to that. Our fans absolutely lose the plot when a player does well.
 
Babar should stay captain and rizwan should continue being the vice captain

He did drop a catch but nevrtheless an excellent series for him one of the 2 stand out performers for Pakistan long may it continue
