Mohammad Wasim as Chief Selector for Pakistan - performance watch

Azam Khan got selected for a specific role.he may not fit that role but atleast he is defining roles.
Imad was dropped because he's one dimensional and wanted him to work hard.
Sarfraz shouldn't have been in the squad but you only really have rohail nazir who is a genuine keeper.

Azam Khan’s role in the team is to play as lower order power hitter, surely there’s better power hitters than Azam Khan. Also, why are we so desperate to have Azam Khan in the team, why can’t we wait until he’s performed at domestic level for 2-3 years before picking him?

Imad Wasim is a better ODI player than T20 player, he was dropped from the wrong format. He’s more than capable of batting at 5 for Pakistan in ODI’s.

Can you name anyone that we haven't tried as a lower order power hitter.disagree I believe he's better in t20s than odis.

As predicted, Babar Azam has been trying to get Shoaib Malik back into the team. Apparently, Misbah has no problems with bringing back Malik but the CS does.

Who would’ve thought that Mohammad Wasim would be a bigger problem than Misbah and Waqar.

The first man I want out of the door is Mohammad Wasim.

Babar Azam is the captain of the team, and if he wants a certain player in the team but isn’t being listened to then there’s going to be a major bust up between him and Mohammad Wasim.

Mohammad Wasim is happy to pick Azam Khan who happens to be overweight, and hasn’t performed in domestic cricket but can’t pick Shoaib Malik, who happens to be fit and in form.

Ehsan Mani and Wasim Khan, I’m lost for words.😵

First Misbah
Then Waqar
And now Wasim.

Mohammad Wasim has completely lost his mind. It shocks me how poorly he understands cricket, and how he is still somehow the chief-selector. Even someone who barely watches cricket would agree that Shoaib Malik needs to be in the squad. This utterly deluded individual and con-man needs to be sacked. He is by far the biggest thing wrong with Pakistan cricket today.

He is a guy who's been dying for spotlight and thinks he runs the team instead of captain and coach. He is egomaniac without any insight. His Powerpoint pressers are cringeworthy. Needs the boot.

All the babar fans out in droves.. shoaib hasnt done anything of note in like 3 years.. he a liability in the field and as a batter and bowler...

Babar clearly has low cricket IQ.. there are much better so called all rounders then shoaib...

Has selected decently, but a few errors - namely the openers, and not picking an experienced pacer to replace Abbas, like Waqas Maqsood.

8.5/10 job so far.

I guess Shoaib Malik is a worse fielder than Azam Khan and Sharjeel.

Malik is a far better option than Azam Khan but that’s not saying much. It would be better to pick a younger player, I don’t know who that is but that’s the job of the chief selector. MW hasn’t done anything revolutionary with his selections and by and large has been a disappointment as CS.

Didn’t they say Babar had the final say on selections? I haven’t seen him influence any selection so far other than maybe advocating for Harris Sohail, but he was already the selection committee’s golden boy so it’s hard to say.

Shaoib Malik I's one of the better fielders am not sure what cricket you have been watching.who said he's an all rounder ?

Let’s bring back another failure. Then the blame will be that young players are not getting chances. Let the young players try and fail over a 40+ year old who can’t do much anymore. We can’t afford to carry two 40+ players in the team.

Your statement would have had more weight if you hadn’t said that he is a liability in the field. He is still miles better than 90% of Pakistani players today in the field.

I am surprised Malik has fooled his fans again who want him back. This fraudster made a 20 year career out of fooling fans.

Just a reminder if a bowler is bowling at 140 kph, Malik gets blinded. On top of that if there is a little extra bounce on the wicket, Malik also gets breathing issues.

MW is right and disappointingly, Babar is totally wrong. We just don't move from these failures. How many times do these loseers have to fail before they are sacked permanently.

I have watched more cricket than you have had hot dinners and unlike arm chair fans I go to matches. If you think Malik after a decade or more of failure is the answer then I have no answer.

I’ve liked the fact that Muhammad Wasim has mixed it up and the direction he’s taken with our cricket in terms of selection.

Totally agree that malik should be nowhere near our team, the guy creates fights and is a spiteful human being.

Agreed. Malik has been wronged his entire career despite putting up some absolutely incredible performances.

Its a shame he retired from test cricket otherwise the opening issue we have been having wouldn't have existed at all.

If the world cup t20 was in Australia then it will be a certain NO but due to it being in UAE then he should be in the squad.

Malik was a rubbish test player.

Malik has been wronged his entire career? Biggest joke I’ve ever heard.

So just because you have watched cricket longer than me, that somehow makes you more of an expert on cricket than me? I don't think so.

You are right about one thing though which is that you don't have an answer. Because there is none. If there was we wouldn't be having this conversation.

Thing is, when you're relying on the likes of Azam Khan, Sharjeel Khan and Sohaib Maqsood, you know your goose is pretty close to being cooked. And in such a case, someone like Malik looks like Bradman by comparison. Not just because he is one of the best players of spin in the world and someone who has great experience of playing in UAE, but also because he will likely be a million times better than these guys even when he is 50.

Playing Malik is not the answer. How many times have we selected the guy on the big stage only to see him go missing? What is the logic in selecting a 40 year old? Whether replacements are good or not, you have to make way for the next generation.

I mean I don't know if he has been wronged his entire career. He was a pretty rubbish player in between there until he was finally dropped in 2014.

However, he has looked like a different player altogether since his 2015 comeback. There's more maturity there, there's experience. The strike-rates have gone up significantly. His ability to play spin has only gotten better.

And while some people here might have short memories, I remember perfectly well the role he played in Pakistan's limited-overs middle-order between 2015-19. He was an integral part of Pakistan's rise to No.1 in the T20 rankings and played many important knocks in both formats that most people here have conveniently forgotten even though they have seemingly been watching cricket for ages. Or so they say.

It absolutely is the answer and the only answer. He is one of the best players of spin in the world and someone who has well and truly earned his spot in the side based on his performances. Far more than parchis like Azam Khan or unfit hacks like Sharjeel who will sink us at the World Cup if given the opportunity.

You might be content at watching Pakistan get beaten and knocked out in the first round, but I'm not.

Anyone that considers Malik to be player after a decade of failure knows nothing about even the basics cricket

Sorry but agree with savak

Malik has never been the answer A limited player whos played 20 odd years and never really convinced Esp now as a 40 yr old

Pakistan need to move forward Whether it has adequate players or not doesnt matter Theres no sense in picking malik in 2021 anymore no matter what We need to move on

There maybe short term pain but Sooner or later it needs to be done Id rather it sooner

Your comment shows exactly how out of touch you are with modern day cricket. This isn't the 1990s or the 2000s. Actually bother to look up Malik's stats in T20Is in the last 5 years before you start referencing his entire 20+ year long career.

There's plenty of time to think about the future...in the future.

With the T20 World Cup coming up Pakistan should not be wasting time on parchis and unfit hacks, who don't have a future to begin with.

Everyone here loves to talk about the 'future' and while it may sound nice and all, the harsh reality is that there simply isn't enough quality talent in Pakistan. And even if there is, turning that talent into a international-level player will take alot of time. And this is not that time.

Malik is not the answer but everyone else is terrible

You’ve watched our players play spin, you know they struggle against anyone that’s labelled as a ‘spinner’, you know that Shoaib Malik is by far our best player of spin, and yet you knowing that the tournament will be held in conditions that are mostly suited to him, you think he can’t do better than hacks like Haider Ali or motay like Azam Khan?

If Azam Khan gets into the team as a sumo who can bat like Hassan Ali basically, then what’s stopping Malik from getting into the team?

So you think the opposition will bowl spin to Malik and btw what great trees has Malik uprooted with his amazing play of spin in the last decade.

The opposition will be forced to play their pace bowlers in the middle overs if Malik comes in around the 13th over, I’d rather have Bumrah bowling 1 over in the death and not 2 overs.

I don’t know the statistics but I probably don’t even need to look at them to bet on my house that Shoaib Malik has the best stats against spin amongst the current players.

If you watched the KPL final, you’d have seen one of the players whose been picked for Pakistan (Sohaib Maqsood) struggling against a 45 years Shahid Afridi. Watch the first ball Sohaib Maqsood off Afridi, look at the gap between bat and ball, an elephant could’ve fit through it.

Malik has poor for a decade and shouldn't be anywhere near any team. We saw the same arguments before the WC and how did that turn out.

I was not in favor of including Malik for the wt20 when it was to be held in Aus, but now that it's in UAE, things have tilted in his favor as he is among the best player of spin in Pak still and can shift gears.

If there was a Grandhomme, Maxwell, Russell, Phillips or Livingstone in waiting then surely yes, should have gone with that, but considering the options we have are Azam Khan, Sohaib Maqsood, Khushdil Shah and Haider Ali. Malik seems like a very sensible choice.

I do have a soft spot for Haider and Sohaib, but Haider is in terrible form and out of confidence while Sohaib still suffers from the implosion under any amount of pressure.

So will Mohammad Wasim survive after Ramiz comes into power?

So will Mohammad Wasim survive after Ramiz comes into power?

What can you expect from Ramiz , if you listen to his ideas it seems like its better to commit suicide rather than listen to his ideas.

Malik has poor for a decade and shouldn't be anywhere near any team. We saw the same arguments before the WC and how did that turn out.

I wouldn’t have taken Malik to WC19 only because he’s been very poor in England but for the WT20, the conditions are much different so we really shouldn’t be bringing up the WC19 performances. Let’s look at how Malik performed in the Asia Cup, or how he played in the PSL.

If we can pick players like Faheem Ashraf who has NEVER performed in T20i’s then why can’t we pick Malik. If you had to pick either Faheem or Malik (let’s say Malik will be used as an all rounder) for the WT20, keeping in mind the conditions, who would you pick? And you can’t say neither because we all know Faheem will never be dropped regardless of his stats

So will Mohammad Wasim survive after Ramiz comes into power?

I honestly think despite what people think Waseem has done a stellar job.

Let's look at the resume so far and what his selection has contributed:

Test series (home) vs South Africa- Pak won by 2-0
Test series (away) vs Zimbabwe- Pak won 2-0
Test series (away) vs West Indies- Draw 1-1

T20 series (home) vs South Africa- Pak won 3-1
T20 series (away) vs South Africa- Pak won 3-1
T20 series (away) vs Zimbabwe- Pak won 2-1
T20 series (away) vs England- Eng won 2-1
T20 series (away) vs West Indies- Pak won 1-0 (can't really gauge much from this but a win is a win)

ODI series (away) vs South Africa- Pak won 2-1
ODI series (away) vs England- Eng won 3-0

From what we can see

- Pak has been undefeated in test series so far
- In t20s we lost 1 series against England
- In ODIs one series lost against England

Although i understand that some of these series are against depleted sides, wins are wins and you can't do anything when an A side is not playing.

In terms of limited overs cricket i feel Waseem has tried his best to figure out the middle order conundrum with Shoaib Moqsood (failed), Haider Ali (failed), Iftikhar Ahmed (failed), Hussain Talat (failed), Khushdil Shah (failed), Danish Aziz (failed)

All the names i've mentioned had good domestic stats so they weren't exactly terrible and their selection was justified, the onus is on the player to snatch their chances but if they are failing and you are trying then this can't be helped.

Mohd Wasim's tenure has been short. But he has backtracked on a few things. His logic for dropping Abbas was loss of pace and lack of potency in his second spell onwards. What was the criteria and logic for recalling Abbas again? Did he magically rediscover an extra yard of pace and extra potency in his second spell onwards?

Ok fine Abbas and Azam were questionable selection no one can be 100%. Tell me 1 person right now who is better than him and knows U-19 and 2nd XI players as well as First XI players apart from Rashid Latif and Muhammad Wasim?
He is the best Pakistan got you have no options you think guys like Inzamam will watch domestic 4 day games? Let alone 2nd XI and U-19.

Well you would've been daft not to utilise Abbas's County form and given his experience with the Dukes he was a welcome addition. Although Abbas was useless he had his moments so can't say he was a complete flop.

It’s official, he is the worst selector of all times, after that t20 World Cup squad announcement.

I don't understand the meltdown here. He has selected a decent squad out of available resources. Fakhar will be back before 10th Oct, not that it will make much of a difference.

Good news is that loser Misbah is gone. We have a chance now of reaching semifinals.

It’s a mediocre squad but then again I’m not sure who else there was to select.. Haider Ali? Maybe it would make sense cause he’s young but he’s been a failure as well. Ifti? It’s a toss up between him and Kushdil. It would have been good to pick maybe one more young raw player, someone like Arshad Iqbal but that wouldn’t add much. Asif is a back for sure but his UAE record is decent, we desperately need power hitting down the order, both Asif and Kushdil have that and I pray Razzaq can provide some insightful coaching to these guys. Azam Khan is a terrible selection, I really hope he doesn’t play against India or any other team for that matter as it’s an international embarrassment to see him on tv.

Looks like he will have to resign. He has no teeth. He has succumbed to pressure from the media, social media and ex players and will now be making 4-5 changes in the T-20 WC squad. The guy cannot stand any pressure from the PCB Chairman, PM and others e.t.c.

No he didn't select a good squad it was average at best

Would you rather he stayed with the squad selected instead of changing it

If I be honest, it’s actually all just fallen apart since Ramiz was appointed chairman.

This appointment should have been done after the T20 World Cup

I thought Misbah was the worst thing to happen to Pakistan cricket but Mo Wasim is even worse, I don’t even think he’s selecting anyone he’s basically the press secretary for squad announcements now.

Would you rather he stayed with the squad selected instead of changing it

If he had a vision and direction, he should have shown some balls and stuck to his guns, ignoring all the criticism from all corners. The fact he is being reactive shows he doesn't have the stomach for this job

Selection of Hafeez in T20 world cup is necessary due to his off spin but he is not a good batter. He is another of the mediocrities we have. Malik's case is even much more problematic than Hafeez: How? let me explain:
Old mediocre players and tested ICC event failures. They were not match winners or legends even at their prime form, I am not even sure a prime ever existed. Out of the past 15 ICC event campaigns for Pakistan, malik never performed even when at peak of his playing capability. Malik helped Pakistan win one match against India in champions trophy in 2007 and once against Afghanistan in those campaigns.
All the campaigns I remember post 1983, did the approach to go with old tested mediocres or even legends like shoiab akhtar 2011, inzi 2007, waqar 2003, wasim in 2003, younis in 2015, yousuf in 2011, miandad 1996, saeed anwar 2003 ever help?
Supporters of Malik should tell that how many matches per 100 matches has he won for Pakistan . He also had very bad recent form in CPL. Just because he is politically suave, I am against his selection and think that Sarfraz is a better and 6 years younger bet in the middle order based on spin playing options. Adding both Malik and Hafeez is an old and tested recipe for world cup disaster and more of trying the same thing and expecting a different result kind of idiocy

If he had a vision and direction, he should have shown some balls and stuck to his guns, ignoring all the criticism from all corners. The fact he is being reactive shows he doesn't have the stomach for this job

How do you know wasim is calling the shots and not Ramiz

has been in job for 10 months i think should stay atleast untill next year because i can't see any replacement because none of the former players know anout domestic players let alone 2nd XI and U-19 which Muhammad Wasim Abbasi and Rashid Latif only know because Pakistan does want another Inzamam who says Shan Masood is best t20 opener in Pakistan as he performed in KPL he doesn't even give a damn about domestic for him KPL is more authentic and also inzi says Shoaib Malik is experianced and Asif Ali is best hitter so when world cup comes bring all experianced players back even if they haven't played for 2 years as he said he does that would do if he was selector.

He should be fired for the sole reason of selecting azam khan

How do you know wasim is calling the shots and not Ramiz

If Ramiz Raja is calling the shots then surely Mohammad Wasim should resign like Wasim Khan, because what’s the point of having a CS when he can’t pick his team.

Also, let’s not forget that before Ramiz Raja came, Mohammad Wasim had already made so many blunders like picking Azam Khan for the England tour, so maybe it was another blunder by MW with the WT20 squad selection.

Yes that was a blunder I agree.but if he quits now do you really think he has a chance of being a coach under ramiz influence in the future

If Pakistan's biggest TTF lover Muhammad Akram who even Surpassed Salahuddin Sallu and Iqbal Qasim in TTF loving is going to replace Muhammad Wasim you better make a hockey player chief selector atleast he woukd do better.

Reports indicate that squad to take on Australia in Tests will be announced soon by Wasim.

Big chance for Wasim to come out as a hero .... or maybe not depending on the outcome.

Failure to select the right squad for the Pak v Aus Test series?

Hopefully he will be made accountable for selecting the worst spin duo in Pakistan history beyond pathetic

what can he do, theres literally no spinners in pakistan. im not his biggest fan, but theres no one he could ahve selected who would have changed that negative approach.

I think he is just a dummy selector. The team is selected by Rameez, with minimal input from Babar and the coach .Wasim just announces the squad.

He can select young spinners like

Umer Khan
Asghar
Zafar Gohar
in place of Nauman ali,, he had terrible series against BD in spin friendly tracks which was the last series..

Sajid gets away with his performance against BD in the last series

He has selected three leggies for the ODIs now to show his grudge against Imad Wasim...

Bring back Inzi and MA combo, they are much better than these lot...

what have any of them achieved, zafar notwithstanding they are barely even holding on to their domestic places. zafar might have added a bit more with the bat, but overall it wouldnt have made a difference to the result. you need spinners with mystery, aus have no trouble playing club level conventional spinners.

No point in selecting a 35 yrs old spinner again who had an abysmal run in the last series which was spin friendly..

totally agree, but that doesnt refute my first point, theres no one who would have added anything to change pakistan's approach.

Well you are not getting my point. It is not about achieving more than Nauman, which im sure they atleast would have done equal to Nauman + their fielding would be much much better than chacha ofc,

Even if though they go wicketless , they would have got world of confidence and lots to learn bowling against Aussie batsman ( Khwaja, Warner, Smith and Labuchagne).. They have a future to go with.. Wats the future with chacha Nauman poorly performing

International match experience is different from bowling to domestic lagaan type batsmen..

Several poor selections in the Australia series which backfired.

He has to come under the scanner for those poor selections.

next series vs SL is in july so a while away, Fawad will probably be made the only scapegoat for a teams poor series. No one in PCB is prepared to make tough decisions.

Sajid gets away with his performance against BD in the last series

On what basis are you going to collect them ?

Looks like Kushdil is being given a go and Iftikhar a chance for missing out on the World Cup.

With the current set up we are playing 7 batsmen and 4 and half bowlers.

Shadab for Zahid and Hassan for Wasim are required and then we might be able to squeeze overs out of Iftikhar. But rather than Ifti we should try Hussain Talat as he adds a Pace bowling option and can bat in Top 5.
