A powerful earthquake has hit Gaziantep in south-eastern Turkey, near the border with Syria, killing at least 17 people.

The US Geological Survey said the 7.8 magnitude tremor struck at 04:17 local time (01:17 GMT) at a depth of 17.9km (11 miles) near the city of Gaziantep.

The quake was felt in the capital Ankara and other Turkish cities, and also across the wider region.

Many buildings have collapsed, and there are reports of people trapped.

Local Turkish officials say at least 17 people have died - but the death toll has been rising steadily.

Turkish Interior Minister Suleymon Soylu said 10 cities were affected: Gaziantep, Kahramanmaras, Hatay, Osmaniye, Adiyaman, Malatya, Sanliurfa, Adana, Diyarbakir and Kilis.

A BBC Turkish correspondent in Diyarbakir, north-east of Gaziantep, reported that a shopping mall in the city collapsed.

The tremor was also felt in Syria, Lebanon and Cyprus.

"I was writing something and just all of a sudden the entire building started shaking and yes I didn't really know what to feel," Mohamad El Chamaa, a student in the Lebanese capital Beirut, told the BBC.

Turkey and Syria earthquake - live updates: More than 350 people killed in 7.8 magnitude tremor
At least 350 people have been killed and many more are injured after a 7.8 magnitude earthquake, and several aftershocks, caused widespread destruction in Turkey and Syria.

The earthquake has caused widespread destruction across Turkey and Syria, toppling buildings and sending panicked residents out into the cold winter night.

Rescue workers and residents are frantically searching for survivors amid the rubble in several cities on both sides of the border.

At least 130 buildings have fallen in Turkey's Malatya province, which neighbours the epicentre, governor Hulusi Sahin said.

In the Turkish city of Diyarbakir at least 15 buildings have collapsed and rescue teams have called for silence as they listened for survivors in a toppled 11-storey building.

In northwest Syria the opposition's Syrian Civil Defense described the situation in the rebel-held region as "disastrous", saying entire buildings had collapsed and people were trapped in the rubble.

Syria's state media reported that some buildings collapsed in the northern city of Aleppo and the central city of Hama.

Death toll hits 2,700
We've had an update on the death toll in both Syria and Turkey tonight.

The total number of fatalities reported is now 2,730.

Of these, 1,762 were confirmed in Turkey.

Another 538 were recorded in government-held Syria, and around 430 in opposition-held parts of the country.

The death toll from a strong earthquake in south-eastern Turkey, near Syria's border, could rise eight-fold, the World Health Organisation has warned.

The toll, which currently stands at more than 2,700 people, has increased rapidly since the first earthquake struck early on Monday morning.

About 12 hours later, a second powerful tremor hit further north.

Rescuers have been combing through mountains of rubble in freezing and snowy conditions to find survivors.

Countries around the world are sending support to help the rescue efforts, including specialist teams, sniffer dogs and equipment.

The US Geological Survey said the 7.8 magnitude tremor struck at 04:17 local time (01:17 GMT) at a depth of 17.9km (11 miles) near the city of Gaziantep.

Seismologists said the first quake was one of the largest ever recorded in Turkey. Survivors said it took two minutes for the shaking to stop.

The second quake had a magnitude of 7.5, and its epicentre was in the Elbistan district of Kahramanmaras province.

An official from Turkey's Disaster and Emergency Management Authority said it was independent of the earlier tremor and not an aftershock.

The death toll in Turkey has exceeded 1,760, while some 1,000 are confirmed to have died in Syria.

The WHO has warned that those numbers are likely to increase as much as eight times, as rescuers find more victims in the rubble.

"We always see the same thing with earthquakes, unfortunately, which is that the initial reports of the numbers of people who have died or who have been injured will increase quite significantly in the week that follows," the WHO's senior emergency officer for Europe, Catherine Smallwood, told AFP.

Ms Smallwood added that the snowy conditions will leave many people without shelter, adding to the dangers.

At least 3,000 believed dead in Turkey and Syria

The latest death toll from this morning's devastating quakes has now exceeded 3,000 in Turkey and Syria, according to reports.

Some 2,316 people have now died in Turkey, according to the country's disaster agency.

In neighbouring Syria, at least 1,293 people have died, according to the government and rescue groups cited by the AFP news agency.

It reports that in government-controlled areas, Syria's health ministry says 593 people have now died. In rebel-held parts of the country's north-west, at least 700 people were killed, according to the White Helmets rescue group, as quoted by AFP.

Turkey and Syria earthquake updates: death toll passes 4,800 with numbers expected to rise – latest news
At least 3,381 have died in Turkey, while Syria toll stands at 1,444; WHO says deaths could pass 20,000

  • International rescue missions have rushed to Turkey and Syria after one of the most powerful earthquakes to hit the region in at least a century left more than 4,800 people dead, thousands injured and an unknown number trapped in the rubble. The early-morning quake and dozens of aftershocks brought down entire apartment blocks in Turkey and heaped more destruction on Syrian communities already devastated by over a decade of war.
  • At least 3,381 people were confirmed dead in Turkey, according to the Anadolu news organisation, which cited the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority. With the death toll coming from Syria, the most recent figure for which is 1,444, that brings the total toll to 4,825. The WHO has warned the number of dead could rise to more than four times this figure, or about 20,000, in the coming days.
  • The first quake struck as people slept and measured magnitude 7.8, making it one of the most powerful in the region in at least a century. It was felt as far away as Cyprus and Cairo. The European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) said preliminary data showed the second large quake measured 7.7 magnitude and was centred 67km (42 miles) north-east of Kahramanmaraş, Turkey, at a depth of 2km.
  • More than 7,800 people have been rescued across 10 provinces, according to Orhan Tatar, an official with Turkey’s disaster management authority.
  • As of 6am, early 13,000 rescue workers, many of them volunteers, had left Istanbul to help in impacted areas, according to the news organisation Sabah, which cites the governor of Istanbul. Many are bound for Hatay, where, according to reports, there is growing anger at the lack of assistance for people trapped under the rubble.
  • Syrian opposition said ‘hundreds of families’ are still trapped under rubble. Time is running out to save hundreds of families still trapped under the rubble of destroyed buildings after this week’s devastating earthquake, the head of the Syrian opposition-run civil defence service said on Tuesday.
  • In 1999, when a quake of similar magnitude hit the heavily populated eastern Marmara Sea region near Istanbul, it killed more than 17,000 people.
  • The death toll could rise to more than 20,000 people, said Catherine Smallwood, the World Health Organization’s senior emergency officer for Europe. “There’s continued potential of further collapses to happen so we do often see in the order of eightfold increases on the initial numbers,” she told AFP, speaking when the estimated toll stood at 2,600. “We always see the same thing with earthquakes, unfortunately, which is that the initial reports of the numbers of people who have died or who have been injured will increase quite significantly in the week that follows.”
  • Joe Biden spoke with the Turkish president, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, on Monday to offer condolences and reaffirm Washington’s readiness to assist in rescue efforts, the White House said. The US president “noted that US teams are deploying quickly to support Turkish search and rescue efforts and coordinate other assistance that may be required by people affected by the earthquakes, including health services or basic relief items”, said a White House statement.

"My Country Is In Great Pain": Turkish Community In Delhi On Devastating Quake

"Hello, are you safe?" Sercan Unsal, a Turkish-origin person settled in Delhi, utters these words every few minutes as he rings relatives and friends in earthquake-hit Turkey and disconnects soon after hearing the answer from the other side in affirmation.

"As the rescue operation is underway, I don't want to occupy the phone lines. There is no electricity and people living there are also facing network issues. We just want to ascertain whether they are well and fine. I ask them 'Are you safe'. If they say 'Yes', I cut the call," 45-year-old Unsal, who owns a Turkish restaurant here, told PTI.

The 7.8 magnitude earthquake on Monday and multiple aftershocks killed more than 5,000 people and flattened thousands of buildings in Turkey and neighbouring Syria. The quake was centered in Turkey's southeastern province of Kahramanmaras and felt as far away as Cairo.

Turkish-origin people living in India are trying to stay calm despite knowing that their home country would take several years to overcome the devastation.

Some are still oblivious of the whereabouts of their loved ones, Unsal said. A few Turkish-origin people have left for the country after they did not hear back from their family members, claimed Unsal.

Some are calling their loved ones sitting here anxiously waiting for reply and watching the news continuously for updates.

Unsal shifted to Delhi 25 years back while most of his family is in Turkey. Soon after the earthquake reports came in, he telephoned his family members.

"I heave a sigh of relief knowing my family and in-laws are safe. We are fine, yet not fine," Unsal said.

With every passing hour, Unsal, who lives here with his son, is receiving reports about the demise of friends, a school teacher and his family, and several of his neighbours are still missing.

"It is very heartbreaking to know. Every time I call, I get to know about so and so's death and it is devastating to know that my country where I spent my childhood is facing this," Unsal rued.

There is also regret among the Turkish expatriates as they feel they are sitting while most of their family members are on roads without roofs and have to witness the tragic and heart-wrenching scenes.

"We are sitting safely at home. Thousands of miles away...our family members back home do not have place to spend chilly nights and many of their friends are still missing. It is making us restless," he noted.

Around three friends have left for Turkey as they did not hear from their family members, he informed.

"My friends' families live in Hatay and their houses have been demolished. Their family is not responding which is why they left for the country," Unsal informed.

Unsal thanked India for extending help to the country. "I welcome India's move to send help to the country. I want to thank the government. It fills my heart." Fidan Duman, another Turkish-origin person living in Delhi, is overwhelmed with emotions as devastating news keeps on pouring from his country.

Talking to this PTI reporter, Duman, a civil engineer who lives with her two children and husband in the capital, said in a heavy voice "though my family is safe, my friends and other acquaintances are still nowhere to be found".

"I wish I could talk to you more but I am in no position. My country is in great pain. My family is safe but so many people are dying," she said.

India on Monday decided to immediately dispatch search and rescue teams of the National Disaster Response Force, medical teams and relief material to Turkey following Prime Minister Narendra Modi's instructions to offer all possible assistance to the country.

Around 23 Million May Be Affected By Earthquake In Turkey, Syria: WHO

Senior officials from the World Health Organization (WHO) said on Tuesday that Syria's humanitarian needs were the highest after a major earthquake killed thousands there and in southern Turkey.

Adelheid Marschang, WHO Senior Emergency Officer, said Turkey had a strong capacity to respond to the crisis but that the main unmet needs in the immediate and mid-term would be across the border in Syria, already grappling with a years-long humanitarian crisis due to the civil war and a cholera outbreak.

"This is a crisis on top of multiple crises in the affected region said at the organization's board meeting in Geneva," she said.

"All over Syria, the needs are the highest after nearly 12 years of protracted, complex crisis, while humanitarian funding continues to decline."

Death toll passes 7,800
The latest death toll from Monday’s catastrophic earthquake has passed 7,800.

In Turkey, 5,894 people are confirmed to have been killed, while 1,932 people have died in Syria for a combined total of 7,826 fatalities. There are fears that the toll will rise inexorably, with World Health Organization officials estimating up to 20,000 may have died.

US says helping quake-hit Syria but not Assad

The United States said Tuesday it was working with partners to provide earthquake relief in Syria but would stand firm against working with the Damascus government.

The United States also said it expected to send further assistance to Turkiye after sending two rescue teams to the NATO ally, which suffered heavily as well in Sunday’s earthquake.

“In Syria itself we have US-funded humanitarian partners that are coordinating lifesaving assistance,” Secretary of State Antony Blinken told reporters as he met his Austrian counterpart.

“We’re committed to providing that assistance to help people in Syria recover from this disaster, just as we have been their leading humanitarian donor since the start of the war in Syria itself,” Blinken said.

“I want to emphasize here that these funds, of course, go to the Syrian people – not to the regime. That won’t change.”

The United States has refused normalization of relations with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad or any direct reconstruction aid, seeking accountability for abuses during the brutal nearly 12-year civil war.

Very few building in world can remain unaffected after 7.8 quake. If it happens near major subcontinent city damage would have been 10 times or more worse. I pray these places recover soon.

During 2005 earthquakes in Pakistan, local politicians/chieftains/bureaucrats stole aid sent to Pakistan and sold it in black market. A decade after the earthquake, these evil animals were still selling stored aid blankets in local markets around the country.

And during recent floods in Pakistan when aid was sent to Sindh, local Waderas stole the tents, blankets and food meant for starving / dying children and stored it in their castles' massive storage rooms.

Heck, one of the so called "Islami" political party used Tents meant for flood affectees at their convention as carpets . https://tribune.com.pk/story/2390293/tents-meant-for-flood-affectees-used-at-jui-f-convention

I just hope the aid meant for Turkish/Syrian victims may reach to them!

The safest places are Australia and Africa. There can be Tsunami issue if the quake happens in the ocean, but at least they get sufficient warning to evacuate the coastal areas.

I have heard similar stories in 1962 war. Soldiers were not even given blankets because corrupt man in middle sold them in black market.

Death toll nearly 12,000, this is so heart breaking, RIP.

Praying for a speedy recovery for Turkey and Syria

:(

Cherry Blossom leaving no stone unturned over humiliating Pakistan and himself. The turks blatantly told him to get lost and that he was not wanted in Turkey at this time of their tragedy.

Has he gone to Turkey? What for lol

However its nice to the Pakistani army helping out, they have experience after the tragic quake in Pakistan a few years ago.

Aleppo is gone. A settlement was there for 8000 years. It was devastated in the civil war but now the destruction is complete.

City after city appears to have been saturation-bombed, like the Berlin, Munich, Essen, Cologne, Dresden of 1945.

USA and west supported terrorists in Aleppo.

Btw as we were told Asad is brutal , killing his people so USA had to bomb the nation and fund terrorists too. I assume the UK and USA , because they care sooo much have sent in their rescue teams to help?

Strange comment. There has been an earthquake. Act of God. I have never seen one so bad.

I was pointing out, sadly much of Aleppo was already destroyed.

you didnt answer my question so I think its a NO, USA and UK have sent no rescue teams. Strange since they were willing to bomb and kill to help Syrians not long ago.

Turkey's president Recep Tayyip Erdogan has defended his government's response to two catastrophic earthquakes, saying it was impossible to prepare for the scale of the disaster.

At least 15,000 people are confirmed dead in Turkey and northern Syria.

Critics claimed the emergency services' response was too slow and the government was poorly prepared.

Mr Erdogan accepted the government had encountered some problems, but said the situation was now "under control".

The leader of Turkey's main opposition party, Kemal Kilicdaroglu disagreed.

"If there is one person responsible for this, it is Erdogan," he said.

The president rejected the accusation and said unity was required in the aftermath of the disaster, "In a period like this, I cannot stomach people conducting negative campaigns for political interest," he told reporters in Hatay.

Thousands of survivors have been spending a third night in freezing conditions, with hope fading for many trapped under the rubble.

A World Health Organization official has warned there could be significant injuries caused by freezing temperatures among survivors of the quakes.

Syria is Putin’s sphere - he was happy to barrel bomb the rebels, so let him help.

USA has sent help to Turkiye:

However, UK is helping Syria and Turkiye:

All this stuff is easy to look up.

Its easy to blame US and NATO for everything.

It’s the same with colonization ( I find all colonizers appalling). But some posters here will bring up colonization past, which is fine. But when you bring up ottomans . They disappear from the thread. . Oh well

It is remarkable that all the Islamophobes are using this thread to do point scorings.

Over 10,000 people have died. Have some respect.

The fact is this is an area with huge risk and the authorities should've known about it.

For all Turkiye and Erdogan's bluster, these buildings should've all been built to standard.

Earthquake proofing should be front and centre. With all the supposed economic growth which has nosedived recently. It's inexcusable having buildings 'pancake' as they would in Third World.

In Syria it's a tragic enough situation.

This is Erdogan's Katrina. He's already marginalized the Kurds and this disaster is the final straw in the crazy charade he and his government have been up to.

Not avoidable but so many more lives lost than should've been.

Putin is Assad's lover.

Given how eagerly Gadaffi was disgraced, why did UK & USA wilfully ignore Syria ?.

Because unlike Ukraine, with this proxy war, Syria doesn't ultimately matter and Libya was an easy target.

Turkey and Syria earthquake updates: death toll passes 21,000; US grants aid licence pausing Syrian sanctions

The US Treasury Department said Thursday it had issued a licenCe to allow earthquake-related relief to get through that would otherwise be prohibited by sanctions on Syria.

“US sanctions in Syria will not stand in the way of life-saving efforts for the Syrian people,” deputy Treasury secretary Wally Adeyemo said in a statement. “While US sanctions programs already contain robust exemptions for humanitarian efforts, today Treasury is issuing a blanket General License to authorise earthquake relief efforts so that those providing assistance can focus on what’s needed most: saving lives and rebuilding.”

The license lasts for six months. It expands on broad humanitarian authorisations already in effect.

The United States will provide $85m in initial earthquake aid to Turkey and Syria, which will include medicine, shelter and other supplies, President Joe Biden announced. “Our hearts remain with the people of Türkiye and Syria,” he said on Twitter.

I don't think anyone is disrespecting the victims of the quake. We are just pointing out to a poster the double standards he holds on another issue.

There has been a call to lift sanctions off Syria...the US and their lapdogs the UK governments and others have ignored this call. Sending a few dozen people isnt anywhere near as helpful as lifting sanctions.

Sanctions are economic terrorism. US refusing to lift these while Syrians are suffering shows how sick and disgusting the west is.

A Pakistan Air Force (PAF) aircraft carrying tents and relief goods arrived in earthquake-hit Adana, Turkey on Saturday as the country grapples with the devastating effects of a 7.8 magnitude earthquake.

The aircraft carried 16.5 tonnes of humanitarian assistance relief goods from the people of Pakistan for the earthquake-affected people of Turkey.

“PAF is also making all-out efforts to repatriate stranded Pakistanis in coordination with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Pakistan Embassy in Turkey,” the PAF said in a statement.

The press release added that eight Pakistani passengers will also be evacuated to Pakistan.

My guess is Shahid Khan.

Whoever it is may Allah (SWT) bless him.

It's not remarkable at all since most of them come here for that specific purpose. I'm also on a couple of British forums and it's disappointing that once the initial shock has worn off, some start showing their true colours by making tasteless jokes about using duct tape to fix the fault lines or use it as an opportunity to have a go at Erdogan, although what he could have done to stop an earthquake I'm not sure.

Erdogan had a terrible response to this heartbreaking disaster. But once again erdogan also had a terrible response to the failing economy also.

Shahbaz Sharif has been a complete embarassment. He seems like he is eager to hug the president of Turkey. While president is trying to keep him off with 10 feet pole. What a disappointment.
