Ab devilliers retired this year citing fatigue as his reason only a year before a world cup at 34 he had plenty to offer for his team, if anything he has left south Africa in a spot of bother. South Africa has achieved alot in cricket in the last decade barring a world cup trophy. Why wouldnt a player want to fill
that void when he has time and form on his side? He will continue playing t20 leagues but playing one last world cup when his country needed him was too much for him.

On the other hand you have MS Dhoni who is clearly past his best. Absolute legend of the game who has achieved everything for his team but clearly doesn't have much to offer anymore. Holding the team back shamefully yet refuses to retire with grace.

Who is the more selfish individual??

Dhoni. Not even close. Guy should retire if he has any self respect left in him.

Dhoni easily.

AB is not at all selfish.. He was upset about quota system and mentally and physically exhausted by politics and spending time away from family so he retired on a high.. Of he had played for 1 year and imagine his form was crap people would have called him selfish..

There is no comparison AB was many thing but he was not selfish.

Dhoni is a brand with good lobby and money invested so he is greedy and selfish to continue playing at expense of the team.. It’s not just Dhoni but most of sub continent players are the same they continue to play past their expiry date because of pressure from investors, personal milestones, ego, money, limelight etc etc..

I think it was pretty selfish from AB to be honest. He could've retired from tests and t20is. He's going to play all the t20 leagues to make the bucks but cannot play 15-20 Odis for his country?

MSD.

Multi Millionare, achieved everything that is out there, yet he does not retire from ODI's.

Forget ODI's, he does not want to even retire from T20's. A pathetic batsman since 2015 WC. Yet he thinks he is still in his prime. His selfishness is shunting the progress of talented young keepers in Indian domestic system.

Neither are selfish players but if you had to say who has made the more selfish decision it's Dhoni. He's clearly past his best and he is still continuing to play.

I will say both for people make make ab look like saint. He skipped key tour like england test series and went to play for t20 and earn money. Retired when he could have easily played worldcup but he wants to earn more & more through these leagues and fans are going crazy for him. Dhoni on other hand should have retired back in 2015-16 but he chose not to so selfish for playing more International as he can't play other leagues than IPL lol.

One is hurting his team by not being part of it, the other the polar opposite. Take your pick.

By this logic, the entire WINDIES first choice team is selfish.

:110: apples and oranges.

AB hands down! The fact that the guy will continue playing T20 leagues just tells you where his priorities lie. The whole spiel about "running out of gas" is utter hogwash and just solidifies the fact that the guy would rather make a quick buck over sweating it out for the Proteas (specifically talking about the WC, so please don't mention his past achievements). His lack of commitment to his national team is one of the reasons why he'll never be considered one of the greats of the game.

Dhoni's case is different where age has caught up with him and he's clinging on to take one last stab at the glory (WC).

However, when comparing the two's impact on their respective teams, it is not even close! While India might probably benefit from replacing Dhoni, AB's decision has nullified any chance SA stood in the upcoming WC.

Thank you sir

Pretty much both.

AB has no motivation of playing international cricket anymore and wants to continue earning lots of money using IPL and this is at the expense of not playing for his national team .Just look how much SA needs him.

While Dhoni is probably continuing because he himself is greedy for money and wants to remain a brand and continue to be the icon in IPL. If retired, he will be forgotten sooner.

Neither are saint. However, it was more absurd from AB's side to take a break from tests by claiming his dream is WC 2019 and then himself retires from all format of the game when WC is just 1 year to go. Atleast should have played ODI till 2019 WC.

TBH don't think Dhoni is selfish per say, it's just that their mental state is very different and at times disconnected from reality.

What do we do when we are going thru some doubt, we speak to family and friends for opinion. Now imagine yourself being Dhoni and look around who your friends are - film celebrities, industrialists and cricketers and what do you think they tell him day in day out - dude you are god, dude you are the best ever, dude you won India a world cup, dude we love you and you gotta play the world cup. Do you think anyone of them would have criticised him for his slow inning at lords, all of them would have rather sent him glowing congratulatory messages for crossing 10k. Look at Harsha bhogle, he wrote a column y'day that solution to India's no 4 problem is Dhoni as Dhoni is too big a player to not be taken to world cup. These people don't care about India winning or losing for them their personal rapport with dhoni is far more important.

I mean this is what is fed to him day in day out by the people he interacts with on daily basis. It's natural for him to believe them more than some random cricket fans like us. And it happens to all the famous people in India, in all walks of life.
