MS Dhoni retires from international cricket

Former India captain Mr Mahendra Singh Dhoni has announced his retirement from international cricket. The boy from Ranchi, who made his ODI debut in 2004, changed the face of Indian cricket with his calm demeanour, sharp understanding of the game and astute leadership qualities.

One of the most admired and respected cricketers, Dhoni is also among the most successful captains in world cricket. It was under his leadership that India lifted the ICC Cricket World Cup in 2011 after having led India to triumph in the ICC World T20 in its maiden edition of the tournament held in 2007 in South Africa. With India winning the ICC Champions Trophy in 2013 in England, Dhoni became the first and is still the only captain till date to have won all three ICC Trophies.

While his heroics in the limited-overs formats are well documented, it was also under his leadership that India became the No. 1 Test side in 2009 and the team stayed at the top for over 600 days. He has led India to victory in 21 home Test matches, the most by an Indian captain.

Leaving behind a rich legacy that will be difficult to replicate, Dhoni holds the record for most international matches as captain (332). Unarguably the quickest man behind the wicket, Dhoni has 195 international stumpings, the most by any wicket-keeper.

Mr Sourav Ganguly, President, BCCI: “It is the end of an era. What a player he has been for the country and world cricket. His leadership qualities have been something, which will be hard to match, especially in the shorter format of the game. His batting in one-day cricket in his early stages made the world stand up and notice his flair and sheer natural brilliance. Every good thing comes to an end and this has been an absolutely brilliant one. He has set the standards for the wicketkeepers to come and make a mark for the country. He will finish with no regrets on the field. An outstanding career; I wish him the best in life.”

Mr Jay Shah, Honorary Secretary, BCCI: “MS Dhoni is one of the greats of the modern era. I understand it’s a personal decision and we respect that. ‘Mahi’ as we all fondly refer to him, has had an exceptional career in international cricket. His captaincy has been both inspiring and commendable. He is leaving the game richer from the time he joined. I wish him all the very best for IPL and his future endeavours.”

I wonder why he didn't announce it after last year's World Cup. Anyways, good luck to him. One of my favourite cricketers.

Independence day gift to the Indian nation!

Dhoni was a passenger in the team for a while now.

A legend of the ODI game. Lets hope that he is remembered for his form until about 2013, when he was one of the best batsmen in ODI history

I will write in detail once the news is confirmed. For him I only have admiration and respect, Legend for me undoubtedly.

He shared a video in instagram with the quote - "Thanks a lot for ur love and support throughout.from 1929 hrs consider me as Retired"

Good to see he choose independence day to announce his retirement. One of the best players India ever produced.

End of an era.

One of India's Greatest LOI cricketer and among the greatest LOI captains ever.

A legend, an icon of the game and on Independence Day, Dhoni retires it off in style.

:salute

Best captain from Asia Ever.

Won T20 World Cup
Won ODI World Cup
Won Champions Trophy
Won Asia Cup
Test No.1 team for 2 years

He has achieved everything asked from a captain.

Good decision, thank you for the memories irrespective of the criticism you would remain one of the best middle order batsman.

He has set a benchmark for non metro city players to dream big!

I liked Dhoni - a gentleman and always respectful even to the arch enemy.

If he was a passenger then there will be another 5 passengers in the team.. He (probably) was 4th best bat in the xi in his later years..
A legend of the ODI game. Lets hope that he is remembered for his form until about 2013, when he was one of the best batsmen in ODI history

Will be always remembers as greatest odi captain of team India and can find a place in ATG ODI XI..

I may be over thinking but anyone recons that Sushant's death has something to do with this decision? MSD was aparently very upset with his death and maybe not motivated enough to play internationals anymore.

Good news for his blind haters. The way some Indian fans abused him during his last few years in International Cricket proves that he played for a country which is full of thankless fans. :inti

A legend but not good enough in the premier format of the game!

Why not? He's not a specialist bat, he's wk-bat, and he's excellent in his primary role.. So thats make him good enough for premier format..

Don't think too much bhaijaan. Sab changa si. :inti

Greatest limited overs captain and WK batsman from Asia. A truly inspirational and once in a lifetime cricketer.

My favourite captain and one of my favourite cricketers. Even as a Pakistani, I really.lkke dhoni. Very cool headed and nice guy. Really dislike how Indian fans treated him last few years.

Completely agree. Even as an outsider, I was really shocked at all the hate. Fickle fans forgetting about everything Dhoni has done for the team.

Prolly coronavirus derailed his plans for farewell

Highly doubt that

Bittersweet time. Wanted him to retire for a long while, now its strange to see him go. Thanks for everything but we have the players to replace him.

To be clear, the game of cricket gave more to dhoni than he gave to cricket.

Great Players come and go but the game remains.

Fans have thrown stones on yuvis house, burnt posters of sachin, kohli etc it happens to each and every cricketer.
For ex:look at misbah's condition these days.

One of my all time favourites in LOIs and probably the best LOI captain produced by sub continent. One of the best finishers or the game as well as one of the best keepers. Changed the dynamics of Indian cricket team and gave them probably their best era.

Means nothing. He wasn't going to be picked for the World T20 anyway (even in the covid free world) and he would have still played IPL 2020. So life goes on as you initially thought.

One positive from his rise is that it has probably planted the seeds for future cricketers from the hinterland region - Jharkhand, Chattisgarh etc. They have an inspiration and some good cricket facilities there now.

He would be the wicket-keeper in an Indian All Time Test and ODI XI. But we have it in us to produce better - he would be replaceable in that XI unlike a Tendulkar, say.

He lost overseas test because of weak captaincy. His lack of overseas test runs was nullfied by an excellent batting lineup. So even 30 odd runs were enough.

Always underrated IMO as a pure keeper as his keeping wasn't textbook, especially his footwork, but he made up for this with quicker hands than anyone I have seen in the last 20 years

GOAT player/captain.

Always liked him and Dravid. He just brought that aura behind the stumps that was rarely seen in cricket. Perhaps Gilchrist could match him. Always miss him when India plays.

Will go down as a ODI legend , strong contender of getting a spot in All time ODI XI.

Did captaincy in SENA tests the same way he used to do in the subcontinent. When acted proactively and attacked with pacers, got few success like NZ test series 2009, SA 2010-11, Lords test 2014.

Pretty dumb post. It didn't take long to show your vicious side here against Dhoni. You are actually trying to defend those jaahil fans and yourself here. :inti

The best ODI finisher ever, one of the top 5 batsmen to play ODI cricket. Solid test player but didn't hit the heights of ODI cricket

I may be over thinking but anyone recons that Sushant's death has something to do with this decision? MSD was aparently very upset with his death and maybe not motivated enough to play internationals anymore.

Who was picking him anyway?

What is astonishing is, even in retirement thread few fans dont miss a chance to whine. How difficult it is just to wish good luck and move on? :inti

Huh? Please refer to my prior post for my overall thoughts on the subject:

One positive from his rise is that it has probably planted the seeds for future cricketers from the hinterland region - Jharkhand, Chattisgarh etc. They have an inspiration and some good cricket facilities there now.

He would be the wicket-keeper in an Indian All Time Test and ODI XI. But we have it in us to produce better - he would be replaceable in that XI unlike a Tendulkar, say.

In the meantime, I was merely refuting your point and I had a completely valid counter. Who's whining now?

Greatest Limited over captain of all time from Asia. One of the best finishers the game has seen. Dhoni will be missed.

Some people just want to whine. :inti

Rajdeep just ignore.

Think he meant that Dhoni was a solid test player but didn't hit the heights there like in his ODI career.

Arre bhai...my post was not directed at you. Always liked you as a poster...no complains. Anyway lets move on.

A very sad day for cricket fans
Surely has to be one of the greatest cricketers ever to grace the cricket field
Thank yoh mahi

Always underrated IMO as a pure keeper as his keeping wasn't textbook, especially his footwork, but he made up for this with quicker hands than anyone I have seen in the last 20 years

As a pure keeper he was brilliant.

LMAO that is why you should quote the right person and don't act oversmart here. Reminds me of 'kahin pe nigaahein kahin pe nishana' lol. Are you afraid bhaijaan? Sab changa si na veera? :inti

Means nothing. He wasn't going to be picked for the World T20 anyway (even in the covid free world) and he would have still played IPL 2020. So life goes on as you initially thought.

Then you don't know Kohli's love for Dhoni

Legend of the game. One of the greatest captains of all time and one of the greatest LO batters of all time.

The most impactful Indian cricketer after Tendulkar though I hated both due to both were playing after their decline.
My most favourite memory of Dhoni was when he hitted a winning six to Kulasekra and bring back the WC after 1983.
Anyways have a great retirement and future.

Will miss Dhoni on the field!

Thanks for playing Dhoni, wish you good luck for the future :)

He should have done this immediately after the 2019 ODI WC. He has now retired as an unwanted player

Legend player and huge character. Still remember his swag when he was with the Indian team which toured Pakistan before 2010. How many liters of milk did he drink? Gave us a real phainta in one of the matches.

Regardless of belated timing, Dhoni's legacy as a one day captain is extraordinary, winning three ICC trophies and of course was one of the best finishers of all time.

My first memory of Dhoni was the hundred he scored vs us in Vizag in the famous 2005 tour, thinking who the hell is this guy flaying our attack to all parts.

Tactically he was found wanting in Tests, especially overseas.

Wish him well for the future.

5 litres that I used to heard in my childhood days.

If you pick 2 world X1’s, Gilchrist and Dhoni are going to be the obvious first 2 picks. It’s picking the 3rd place where all the debate is going to happen.

Winning ICC trophies is what we are missing these days badly. For some reaching finals or knockout stage is a good enough accomplishment these days. :inti

Dhoni player a brilliant innings in the semi final last year, who knows if he could have taken india to the final if he wasn't run out.

A true great of the game. Such an iconic figure and ebtertained generations of fans
