Sad news for Dhoni as he had given statements during the recent India vs England series that he wanted to continue playing as captain in the IPL. The statements given by the owner Goenka:

"Despite having a good side the team did not get expected results last year. Last year we failed. We could have done much better"

"Mahi was cooperation personified when we conveyed the decision to him,"

"Yes we have opted for Steve Smith as captain of RPS for the forthcoming IPL season. I have been thinking about this decision since the end of the last season and discussing it with my management team.

And our thought is to have a younger captain at the helm of the team this year. We have a very good mix of youth and experience in the team and feel we need a young mind and a young captain with different ideas to spearhead Rising Pune Supergiants."

What will dhoni be in the team for if he isnt the captain?

Poor decision to leave Dhoni out, he still is the best LO captain and is the best finisher for any team that he represents, nevertheless he is always going to be supportive of Smith and help Pune the best way he can.

Faf should have been made captain but Smith is a good captain so not too disappointed by this decision. Seems Dhoni wants a stress free end to his career. He deserves that for being one of the greatest LO batsmen and captains.

Dhoni and Smith are way different captain. Smith gonna give two hoots to dhoni's guidance. He is not kohli and this is not Indian team. He will run it his way. Already last year there were masala reports of Smith not liking the way dhoni captains.Owner was thinking to sack dhoni as captain last year itself.

Yes Faf would have been proper choice.Aussies run away mid-series.

Was always on the cards after dismal showing by RPS last year. Yes! RPS was marred by injuries but he also seemed unimaginative with his captaincy.

Sad to see his steep decline both in skills and stature.

Dhoni won't give unsolicited advice, if he is asked he will comply. Kohli isn't captaincy material anyway so he needs to be spoon fed and frankly, there is no harm in seeking help once in a while from a senior pro like Dhoni.
Good luck to smith, Pune desperately needs a change of fortune.

He was disinterested in last ipl and his captaincy was terrible. He didnt utilize ashwin properly and differences between dhoni and ashwin cropped up as well

Is this a serious question?

Which Indian wicket keeper Batsman is better than Dhoni at the moment? Rishabh Pant and Ishan Kishan still need some years before even thinking about matching Dhoni. And even after that, there are 8 IPL teams, maybe 10 teams from next year, So, Dhoni will be a valued cricketer and will easily go for 1.5 to 2 Million USD for the next five years in the IPL.

In T20s? There are lots. Keeping for 20 overs is not that difficult. And Dhoni's batting has regressed, he is not the same big hitter anymore and other keepers are on par in batting

From what I read, they weren't happy with his leadership so they preferred to go with Steve Smith.

Its not surprising.

Anyone who seriously followed CSK of 2015 and Pune of 2016 would know Dhoni's captain was completely out of bizarro world. In 2015, it was baffling to see CSK going to finals even though we made 1000s of mistakes.

After that, I think Dhoni's LOI captaincy got better when he captained India against NZ (hadn't watched that series closely so can't say). As an advisor to Kohli, he has been very good too.

Anyways, Steve Smith is a poor choice. He is not a great captain anyway.

Ideally it should be Faf but I guess he is not guaranteed a spot with just 4 foreigners.

MSD wasn't special by any means last year but for a franchise it takes a lot more than just a good team to click. I think they have over-reacted to the poor performance last year, especially now with MSD fresh by getting free from national duties as captain, he deserved one more season.

Anyway I think MSD will still be a key part of the decision making process but I don't know, Smith wouldn't have been my first choice. I would have liked to see an Indian captain, perhaps Ashwin? He is a thinker too and a permanent feature in their side.

How is Smith a certainty but Faf isnt?

Wow they chose Smith over Faf,hopefully Chennai next year get both of them.(Dhoni and Faf)

His value reduces to less than half if you take away his captaincy. I am talking about these days.

Even the owners know he is a washed out player long back and his performance both as captain and player is very poor. So i think it is better for the owners to move on from him

Faf can be a better leader but not sure whether he can get into the final eleven everytime so yes smith would be ideal

The owners want a player who takes responsibility and not blame the team mates for poor performances. Dhoni is never known for that and he never resigned as a responsibility. So he has to be forced out

Right, a person who's won U19 WC and is winning test matches on a roll without any help in captaincy is a noob. Reason he has not won an Ipl ?

No no no kohli is a novice and needs every bit of spoon feeding from dhoni the master strategist according to dhoni fans.

lol Smith don't have a good record in ipl now he's almost certain in all games. they should be appointed a captain who's likely to be permanent.

Firstly captaining at U19s doesn't compare with captaincy at the international level, its an entirely different challenge. Secondly even saha or ishant could captain us in India and we would have won by a similar margin, the day dhoni retires people will realize his contributions and show how vulnerable we are. It won't be long before kohli will be on his own and then we'll talk. The only deserving guy for captaincy was ashwin.

I dont think india has missed him at all in test matches. HE doesnt deserve to play test matches out of india anyway and the less said about his horrible captaincy it is better.

I dont think india will ever have such a poor test captain in future because nobody will be so shameless as him to continue to play and captain without contributing in any way.

He is a disgrace to test cricket.

Who are these loads of wicket keeper batsmen better Dhoni? Even the so called future superstars can't keep to save their lives and not to forget the fastest ever stumping performance of Dhoni. Wicket keeping is a full time job otherwise it costs you big matches.

In batting, so far no Keeper has come near him in IPL but one or two may match him this year. So, Dhoni's combined value of a good keeper plus batsmen is still not matched by anyone.

Even if someone matches Dhoni in the next 2-3 years, there will be still be 8-10 IPL teams who would be looking for a such value player and thus ensuring Multi Million Dollar contracts for Dhoni. Remember we are not talking about the Indian team here with a single spot to be filled, this thread is talking about only the IPL.

Faf is a far better T20 batsman than Smith.

I thought IPL will be a 10 team affair from next year. Many 2015 articles point to that.

Will there be a decision taken or its already decided?
Already decided. There was never any talk of a 10-team IPL. RPS and GL knew what they were getting into when they bid for the franchises, which is why BCCI had to create special rules with the reverse bidding for it to make financial sense for the bidding parties.

No decision has been taken, no guarantee either that csk and RR will be allowed without ownership changes atleast in rr given it was the owner who was caught.

Huh? Guys.....

It's already decided, mate. Let's not bother discussing about this any further.

Where are you getting this news from? You do know the original teams were sold only for 10 years and 10 years will be over soon? Then there might be a new auction with new teams

And he we have 42+ old player who is untouchable even after 2 whitewash. Reason for our demise. You can not let a selfish person to be decision maker. He will never do right thing for the team.
