The movie is a old Bollywood classic. Considered the first blockbluster of Bollywood and a milestone movie. Known for its grand sets, memorable dialogues and spectacular performances by Dilip Sahab, Madhubala and Prithviraj Kapoor.

It has a IMDB rating of 8.4 and Rotten Tomato of 91%

How many PPers have watched it and how do you rate it?

One of my favorite movies, not often that you see Dilip Kumar being the weak link in a star cast. Prithviraj Kapoor was majestic and Madhubala truly celestial. Also the songs are among the greatest of all time in Bollywood. Milestone in the history of Indian cinema. IMDB rating doesn't do the movie justice, was expecting it to be a 9+ score.

In the terms of grandeur and some absolutely magnificent scenes I feel the movie was way ahead of it's time.
But was way too melodramatic for me. Didn't enjoy as much.

My most favourite dialogue is when Anarkali tells Akbar "Kaniz Mabadaulat ke behisaab baksheeshon ke badle unhe apna khoon maaf karti hai"

This is when Akbar grants Anarkali one evening with Salim as her last wish. She would be entombed in the morning.

Its a Epic , a landmark in Indian cinema.

But I do not think its first super hit . Before that also there were movies that made big.

It's a film that is put out once in an era, in that it as a result, defines the time it came out in.

Their are very few films that achieve this acclaimed honor, such as "Sholay", "Vishvatama", "D.D.L.J.", "Tere Naam", "Dabaang", "3 Idiots", etc.

These films may not be five star masterpieces but because of their universal appeal and message, they are able to transcend time barriers.

Also, one of the real-life tragedies is that while filming the famous rose scene, Madhubala and Kumar had reached the point of no longer communicating with one another.

Madhubala had a very manipulative and absent-minded father who was a control freak. He demanded control of Kumar's career in return for him marrying his daughter.

Of course, this led to the end of their relationship and sadness which has not deserted both until their last breath.
