Sultans thrash Kings to register third win

Karachi, 28 February 2020:

Multan Sultans recorded their second successive home win in the HBL Pakistan Super League 2020 by beating Karachi Kings by a comfortable 52-run margin at the Multan Cricket Stadium on Friday.

A fine bowling performance led by spinners Imran Tahir and Shahid Afridi who shared five wickets between them set the tone of Sultans’ comfortable win after their batsmen had set what proved to be a match winning 186 for six first innings score.

Sohail Tanvir who got a four-wicket haul in Sultans win over Peshawar Zalmi on Wednesday took two wickets for 20 runs.

Alex Hales with 29 and Umaid Asif 20 were the only batsmen to offer some resistance in what was a less than inspiring batting performance by the Kings.

Batting first after being asked to bat at the toss, Sultans posted a formidable 186 for six total in their allotted 20 overs courtesy half-centuries by opener and man-of-the-match Moeen Ali and captain Shan Masood.

The two added 71 runs for the second wicket partnership after Zeeshan Ashraf (23 off 13 balls) had provided the hosts a flying start in a 31-run opening stand with Moeen.

Moeen hit four fours and as many sixes in his 65-run innings that came off 42 balls; he was the second wicket to fall. Shan also faced 42 balls scoring 61 runs with the help of seven fours and one six.

Khushdil Shah (10) was the only other batsman to reach double figures as Sultans innings was built on the contributions by Moeen and Shan.

Pacers Mohammad Amir and Chris Jordan took two wickets each for Kings, Amir conceding 27 and Jordan conceding 29 runs respectively in their four over spells.

Scores in brief

Multan Sultans 186 for 6, 20 overs (Moeen Ali 65, Shan Masood 61; Mohammad Amir 2-27, Chris Jordan 2-29)

Karachi Kings 134 all out, 17 overs (Alex Hales 29, Umaid Asif 20, Chadwick Walton 15; Imran Tahir 3-28, Shahid Afridi 2-18, Sohail Tanvir 2-20)

Result: Multan Sultans win by 52 runs

Absolutely pathetic.

We should not be losing like this against a below average team like Multan.

nothing more entertaining than KK losing under Imad captaincy, Mamoon you are right Babr has to lead the side. Imad is not the captain you can expect better from. Pathetic attitude and signs of insecurity.

Imad should be sacked immediately. No interest in supporting this side further.

Have to give credit to Shan here - watched most part of MS's bowling today and he was damn impressive. Kept searching for wickets, changed bowlers well and his field placings were excellent - probably earned Babar's wicket by blocking his off-side shots against Irfan's 3 quarter lifters. Apart from one loss, they have won other 3 games by clear cut 25%+ margin, which has almost taken them to qualifiers already for the NRR - unless they blow themselves in last few games, with their NRR, 10 points should be enough to take them to next round.

May be, may may be - not a bad choice to replace Azhar Ali .......

As expected. The brainless leftie excuse. Umer Khan's average against left handers is 11.80 in PSL Someone needs to tell Imad. Hate his attitude. Ramiz would have grilled him better.

clearly Imad bowling one over and Umer none...imad has some explaining to do...sounds fishy to me

He has shown to be a good captain and thats why I was willing to give him a chance.

His batting though has been poor and despite the finish, I watched his innings today and it was terrible/ really sucked the momentum out. However he stayed in and helped Multan get a good total in the end and has a knack for working hard and improving.

Pathetic from imad only bowling him self 1 over and not even giving a single over for umer poor poor captaincy they deserve to come last for that

Not a T20 player, even for Franchise level and despite outstanding List A record, neither an ODI player. But, he makes PAK Test side on merit, quite good thinker of the game (otherwise individually he won't have improved so much at this mature age), extremely fit, fields/catches brilliantly, can bowl a bit as well, intelligent enough to be used as a partnership breaker and well educated - what else?

Its a big question mark on the planning of KK management (including Imad & Dean).
6 out of top 8 batters of Multan Sultan's are lefties. If that was the case then why they played umer in the first place, just to bowl against Afridi or Bopara???

Babar should be made captain and Imad should be replaced with Aamer Yamin, as it adds good balance to their team.

Exactly. He has enough attributes to make him key for Pakistan in the longer formats.

It might turn out of be helpful for Pakistan in the long run that Multan gave him the captaincy in the PSL to show and ultimately hone his captaincy skills. If he can fight and have a decent tournament in his worst format that just shows how strong he is mentally.

Fifth highest scorer at a higher strike rate than Roy, Babar Azam. Contributed to 2 wins with the bat. Hawkeye has to turn his hate towards Imad for the time being.

Exactly. The wind was blowing since the morning and lefties were playing since forever. And what is this excuse that xyz cant bowl to lefties. If they cant bowl what are they doing in the side. And this is even more ironic since Umer Khan's average against lefties is better than against RHB (which is also pretty good).
This is exactly what it sounds like. An excuse and a lame one at that too.

Andy Flower has found a good combination and got them playing disciplined and sensible cricket. Shan has improved as a captain. He looks a much better captain than Imad.

Can’t understand why no over given to umer . Then Imad says becuase they had lefties and spin easier to hit then it’s failure of coach and management along with Imad . Pathetic

Anyone wanna help me settle an argument please.

Did anyone have any doubts over shan masood’s catch to dismiss hales?

MMHS what about making Zeeshan open.Good attiude

Yea it’s not a bad idea but wicket keeping wise he needs to improve. In those crunch moments you need your wicketkeeper taking those crucial catches.

Reckon from this tournament the best finds have been Haider ali and naseem Shah. I’m also liking the look of Muhammad amir khan who’s got a little bit of bumrah in his action (shame he isn’t tall otherwise he’d be giving the batsmen headaches).

Nasim was already up there.

They didn’t select him for t20s but I was puzzled as to why he wasn’t picked, however his success is banging down the door for t20 selection. I reckon Naseem and shaheen are a must but I want to see some improvement from Haris rauf.

Multan is probably one of the better managed teams (balancing out with the other team from Punjab), and they identified his potential as opener. I saw his keeping today - probably I can drive my car through his legs while keeping against spinners, means guy is not a natural WK, but may be workable for franchise level. Don't think he is ready for T20I yet.
