Certainly MS have drafted some really impact batter's into their side. The only source of concern looks to be their bowling now.

They don't seem to have power hitters like Zalmi. I think it will be a Zalmi vs Qalandars final, with Zalmi winning. Sultans will be 3rd.

They are without Russow, Miller, Pollard, Tim David this season. Their middle order fire power is what kept them on top of the table, this could be a hard void to fill

MS's hopes lie on Ihsanullah's health. If he can replicate his form from last season then MS has a serious chance at making the finals.

Overall still a solid squad. Their ceiling will depend on how well guys like Malan & Hendricks end up being.

Possible XI
Dawid Malan
Muhammad Rizwan
Reeza Hendricks
Tayyab Tahir
Iftikhar Ahmed
Khushdil Shah
David Willey
Usama Mir
Abbas Afridi
Reece Topley
Faisal Akram

Back down to Earth in this season without the likes of Roussouw, Miller, David pushing 180 scores to 220. Their bowling lineup is awful.

Multan is all set to buzz with excitement as Multan Sultans will begin their HBL Pakistan Super League 9 campaign at home.

The Mohammad Rizwan-captained team will host all HBL PSL sides from 18 till 25 February at the picturesque Multan Cricket Stadium.

The tournament, as announced by the Pakistan Cricket Board, will commence on 17 February in Lahore and the action will move to Multan next day as Multan Sultans play Karachi Kings in a night game.

The Sultans will then host Islamabad United (20 Feb), Lahore Qalandars (21 Feb), Peshawar Zalmi (23 Feb) and Quetta Gladiators (25 Feb, day game).

Owner and chief executive Ali Tareen: “I am extremely delighted that Multan Sultans will be playing their all home games in front of their own fans in Multan. Whenever Multan Sultans play at the Multan Cricket Stadium, the stadium oozes with passion and love and the atmosphere there is second to none. That same passion, love, and enthusiasm of the people of Multan will be palpable in the weeklong cricket festival in the city and it will make for the perfect beginning for the HBL PSL 9.

“We had back and forth discussions with the PCB about the possibility of playing all our home games in Multan because our fans deserve nothing less than that and I am thankful to the decision-makers at the PCB for awarding the MCS, which is one of the most scenic stadiums in the world, all of our home games.

“We have a brilliant record at the MCS and I am sure that the team that we have put together will bring smiles on the faces of the thousands of Sultans.”

Multan Sultans, the most successful team in the history of the HBL PSL, enjoy a tremendous record at home with seven wins in eight games.

After completing their home leg, the Sultans will travel to Lahore to play Lahore Qalandars on 27 February. Their last four group games are divided equally between Karachi (v KK on 3 March and v QG on 12 March) and Rawalpindi (v PZ on 5 March and v IU, on 10 March).

Former England spin bowling coach David Parsons joins Multan Sultans

David Parsons, one of the most renowned spin bowling coaches, has joined Multan Sultans for the HBL Pakistan Super League 9. Parsons brings with him heaps of coaching and player development experience after working as England men’s side’s spin bowling coach and England cricket’s performance director. He is currently working as performance director at England netball.

Parsons has also worked at the Multan Sultans academy in Lodhran in 2020 with up and coming spinners in the likes of Faisal Akram and Umer Khan. Faisal, left-arm wrist spinner, is part of Multan Sultans squad for the HBL PSL 9.

A feature capturing David Parsons time at the Multan Sultans academy is available here:

David Parsons: “I am very excited to be joining Multan Sultans for the HBL PSL 9 as a spin bowling coach. I have had the experience of working at the Multan Sultans academy in Lodhran at the invitation of Ali Khan Tareen and I was very impressed by the young talent there. I am especially excited to meet up again with Faisal Akram, with whom I worked in the academy.

“I know the immense work that Multan Sultans put in on talent identification and bringing together the various facets of high performance within cricket, including coaching and sports science. This makes working at this franchise an exciting prospect for any coach. I am sure that this is going to be an amazing experience.”

Owner and chief executive Ali Khan Tareen: “David Parsons’ presence in our camp will prove to be beneficial for our spinners and I am delighted that he is coming to Pakistan for the upcoming HBL PSL. Parsons is one of the most qualified coaches around the world and I want our bowlers to make full use of his knowledge and experience.

“Parsons is very accessible and eager to pass on knowledge. The players were very comfortable in working with him during his time at the Multan Sultans academy. It is my vision that we work on the technical aspects of our cricketers from the very beginning and provide them world-class facilities.

“After this season, Parsons, and all of our coaches will be conducting camps at the Multan Sultans academy. I am sure the presence of these top coaches at our academy will produce competitive cricketers and help those already in the circuit to become even better players.”

Saqlain Mushtaq will not be working with the Multan Sultans in this year’s edition due to scheduling reasons.

Ali Khan Tareen: "We were delighted to have Saqlain Mushtaq on board because there is nothing better than having local experience and a name as big as his. But, some scheduling difficulties had emerged because of which we had to put our partnership on hold. We will definitely make use of his experience at some stage in the future."

Multan Sultans coaching staff

Head coach – Abdul Rehman
Spin bowling coach – David Parsons
Assistant and development coach – Muhammad Wasim
Fast bowling coach – Catherine Dalton
Assistant spin bowling coach – Alex Hartley
Strength and condition and fielding coach – Drikus Saaiman

Ali Tareen doesn't seem to have winning PSL as his top priority as MS owner. His priority seems to be including female representation in his franchise. The guy would have probably tried to put female cricketers in his team as well.

PSL Nine Supplementary and Replacement Players announced

Multan Sultans had the fifth pick in the third supplementary round and they went for the experienced West Indian wicketkeeper-batter Johnson Charles, who has represented Sultans and Quetta Gladiators in previous HBL PSL seasons.

The fourth round of the Supplementary picks saw Sultans bagging the exciting 19-year-old Muhammad Shahzad, who was part of Pakistan U19 at the ICC Men’s U19 World Cup 2022.

Explosive West Indies batter Johnson Charles returns to Multan Sultans as he was one of the two supplementary picks of the side in the HBL PSL 9 player replacement and supplementary draft on Monday.

All-rounder Muhammad Shahzad, member of Pakistan squads in the 2020 and 2022 U19 World Cups, was the other pick. Shahzad is a regular at the Multan Sultans Academy in Lodhran and was part of the academy side that won Ramadan Trophy in Karachi last year.

Multan Sultans did not have to make any replacements as all 18 players are available for the entire duration of the HBL PSL 9.

Faisal akram has a golden chance for potential T20 WC selection with a big season in the PSL with the Sultans.

This should be his breakthrough season.

Rejuvenated Multan Sultans ready for HBL PSL 9

A regenerated Multan Sultans are all set to enter the ninth iteration of the HBL Pakistan Super League. They begin their campaign at the Sultans Fort, the picturesque Multan Cricket Stadium, on 18 February, a day after the tournament kicks off. Their first five of the 10 league games are at home and they will go on Pakistan tour from 26 February to play the away games.

Multan has been a daunting destination for the away sides as Sultans enjoy an incredible record of seven wins in eight games here. The champions of the 2021 edition, Multan Sultans have featured in the last three finals and their win percentage of 55.22 is the best for any side since the inception of the HBL PSL in 2016.

“I certainly have huge boots to fill as my uncle [the late Alamgir Tareen] has left a massive legacy,” says Ali Tareen, the owner and chief executive of Multan Sultans. “We are a data-driven and analytics-focused team and have put together a squad keeping in mind the four venues and the player availability in the future editions.

“It is no secret that T20 teams with strong domestic cores have incredible success ratios all over the world, and that is something that we have developed with tactical trade deals and strategic player picks in the HBL PSL 9 Player Draft in December.”

Multan Sultans made exciting trade deals with Quetta Gladiators and Karachi Kings to bag Iftikhar Ahmed, one of the most sought after T20 all-rounders, and Faisal Akram, a 20-year-old rising left-arm wrist spinner, who has taken 20 first-class wickets in three matches with a 10-fer for the match. Multan also snapped first platinum and diamond picks, two of the three gold picks and two of the first four silver picks.
Multan Sultans emboldened their domestic core by picking Tayyab Tahir, Mohammad Ali, Shahnawaz Dahani, Yasir Khan and Aftab Ibrahim. The additions of Reeza Hendricks, Dawid Malan, and Usman Khan further strengthened their batting and David Willey, Reece Topley, and Chris Jordan beefed up their fast bowling stocks.

“Left-arm spinners had an impact in the initial editions of the HBL PSL, but over the last few years, the data suggests their potency has gone down. We had a brilliant season last year, but we could not close it, as we would have liked, because we were just a touch behind in the powerplay and death bowling.

“So now we have put together a squad from which you can make an eleven that will consist of scorching fast bowlers who can bowl in any phase of the game and different style of spinners who can complement them. David Willey, Reece Topley, Chris Jordan along with Abbas Afridi and Dahani make a daunting fast bowling line-up. And, now, throw in our wily spinners - Usama Mir, Faisal Akram, Khushdil Shah, and Iftikhar Ahmed – in the mix and you have a perfect bowling line-up.

“Our batting starts with established T20 stars in Rizwan, Reeza, and Malan, and middle-order boasts the batting firepower of Iftikhar, Khushdil, Tayyab Tahir, Usman Khan, Willey and the list goes on.

“So, I am very much satisfied with what we have been able to put together.

“All the credit goes to our chief strategist Nathan Leamon, head coach Abdul Rehman, development coach Mohammad Wasim and our analyst Waleed Ahmed.”

With the philosophy of providing the best resources to the cricketers so they continue to bring out the best on the field, Multan Sultans have gathered a coaching staff of specialists. Abdul Rehman has recently been part of Pakistan men’s coaching unit and is arguably the most knowledgeable coach when it comes to domestic conditions and players. Mohammad Wasim has recently worked as the national men’s chief selector and continues to coach at the first-class level. Nathan Leamon is widely credited for England’s white-ball revolution that made England the first-ever men’s side to simultaneously hold 50-over and T20 world titles.

Multan Sultans is also the first HBL PSL franchise to introduce women in the coaching set-up with the introduction of Catherine Dalton (fast bowling) and Alexandra Hartley.

“Modern-day cricketers play under tremendous pressures and have a lot of expectations attached with them. T20 teams around the world expect them to be at their best and so do we. It is important that we provide them the best resources in shape of highly knowledgeable and skilled individuals in the dressing room, who can help them in their decision-making and manage them according to the contemporary demands.

“All the coaches in my team are widely respected and have proved themselves. I am often asked about the addition of women in the panel. We at Multan Sultans do not see gender or race, but go for the best available talent and that was exactly the case when we hired Catherine and Alex.

“Catherine has been working at the Multan Sultans academy in Lodhran with fast bowlers like Arshad Iqbal, Sameen Gul, Mohammad Ilyas etc. She worked extensively on their technical aspects that helped them immensely and now they are playing for Pakistan Shaheens or in the first-class teams.

“Alex is a World Cup winner with England in 2017 and she has a lot of information to share with our youngsters. We are committed to working with the boys and girls at grassroots so imagine the benefit the youngsters will have when these coaches will hold camps at the Multan Sultans academy throughout the year.”

Multan Sultans will be arriving in the City of Saints a week before their opening game of the season, which is against Karachi Kings, on 18 February. They will then play Islamabad United and Lahore Qalandars on 20 and 21 before taking on Peshawar Zalmi and Quetta Gladiators on 23 and 25.

“Multan will be buzzing with excitement. People in this part of Pakistan absolutely love cricket and their passion and love for the game is next to none. It is something underscored by the fact that every match here is sold out. I cannot wait for the action to begin.”

Let’s see what your all about now Rizwan

This is not a good sign for MS. Key players missing from their squad this time around. Rilee was let go as well, and now Ihsanullah and Topley are also not available, Multan will be feeling like they are in trouble now.

Multan Sultans training session in full swing. How far will they go this PSL? 🤔

England fast bowler Olly Stone has replaced injured Reece Topley in Multan Sultans squad for the HBL PSL 9.

Reeza Hendricks has joined Multan Sultans at the team hotel in Multan.

MS will play their first HBL PSL 9 match today against Karachi Kings. Foreign players who have joined the team so far are David Willey, Dawid Malan, Usman Khan, and Reeza Hendricks.

Olly Stone, Chris Jordan, and Johnson Charles will be joining the team in the coming days

Fast bowler David Willey has been announced as Multan Sultans vice-captain for the ninth edition of the HBL Pakistan Super League.

Multan Sultans are beginning their campaign today at The Sultans Fort (Multan Cricket Stadium) as they play Karachi Kings.

David Willey: “I am buzzing to be joining the Sultans as a vice-captain. This young and dynamic team has all the potential to bag their second HBL PSL title and I am looking forward to working with Mohammad Rizwan towards achieving that goal.”

Owner and Chief Executive Ali Khan Tareen: “David Willey is one of the key players in our side and it is his warrior spirit that made us give him this all-important role in the side. He has been brilliant with Multan Sultans the last time he played and I have no doubt he will bring out his best this year too .”

Two wins out of two. They got off to a very good start in this edition at their home ground. The good form of Mohammad Ali is proving very beneficial for them in the absence of their star fast bowler Ihsanullah.

Fast bowler Chris Jordan has joined the team

Olly Stone has been ruled out of the HBL PSL 9 because of an injury in his right groin.

Multan Sultans will apply for his replacement in due course.

Alex Hartley as an assistant spin bowling coach seems to have made an impact? Usama Mir has improved with his line and length.

The HBL PSL Event Technical Committee has approved Ali Majid to replace Ihsanullah for the remainder of the tournament.

Multan Sultans have proved that they have great depth in their squad. They were playing with only two overseas players today against Lahore Qalandars and they provide too good for them.

First team to qualify for the play-offs of PSL 9 - Multan Sultans!

Batter Usman Khan is flying to the UAE today to attend a personal matter. He will miss Multan Sultans' 5 March fixture against Peshawar Zalmi at the Pindi Cricket Stadium.

Usman is scheduled to join the team in Islamabad ahead of the 10 March game against Islamabad United.

Multan Sultans Coach Abdul Rehman in the post match conference said following:

"Usama(Mir) is a good bowler in T20 but unfortunately couldnt do well in the world cup and New Zealand tour. So it's good luck for us that he has regained his form here, no doubt on his abilities as a great bowler."

"We pick Usman(Khan) on the recommendations of Andy Flower. If we pick players on better techniques rather than performances then we won't waste players like(Imran Tahir, Usman Khan etc) that."

(Speaking on fielding standards)

"If any of our player makes dive to stop the ball we applaud him but the world has moved a lot ahead than that. If we won't raise the bar for our fielding standards then the things won't change for us."

Sultan’s Qualifiers Dominance Continues

2021 vs IU - won by 31 runs
2022 vs LQ - won by 28 runs
2023 vs LQ - won by 84 runs
2024 vs PZ - won by 7 wickets
