You're still not getting my point. As good as Vijay's 100s were they are NOT memorable and iconic. Flat pitch or not Azhar scored against some of the best oppositions out there. Most of Dhoni's best innings came on paratha pitches but nobody cares because they came in iconic victories or draws against quality opposition. Same with Jayawardene and Sehwag. Vijay has scored better 100s in places Dhoni and Sehwagh can only dream to do but he is underappreciated because he never really was that impactful as them

Vijay's knocks at Brisbane, Adelaide, and lord's most definitely were memorable. And while Rahane's hundred at Lord's was the innings of the match, Vijay's second innings 95 will most certainly be remembered for a long time as a hugely important innings in an iconic victory.

Excuse me, who are you to judge that, his knock at Brisbane and lord's were far better, you are more importantly forgetting it was bowlers, who disappointed us on both tours, vijay is a much better batsmen than ali, though ali is young.

I never said his 100s weren't better or that he isn't better than Ali. It's simply the reason why he is underappreciated

I still think he was overshadowed in most of those matches by Kohli and Rahane respectively

Exactly, vijay is one of the most underappreciated cricketer in indian team so is rahane, I still believe jinks is better suited at 3 while puji would be good at 6,while rohit at 5, however we will discuss it another time .

He isn't someone who is capable of winning matches for the team. Until he learns how to do that he won't be appreciated as much.
It's the same story with Ajinkya Rahane.
For example had India won or drawn the series against Aus or England they would have been much more appreciated.
Azhar, Warner, Smith etc have all built their names over wins for their team
You are trying too hard lol. Murali Vijay is under-appreciated by indian fans that doesn't mean he is a nobody and hasn't contributed for Team India. He is doing his job which is to see off the new ball.

And that's THE point. A knock cannot be iconic if bowlers don't help you . Unless of course you are batting in the 4th innings.

Definitely. I wrote him off after a few intl matches. However, he has been a remarkable batsman in the last few months.

Which Azhar are you talking about? Sorry I did not get you. Azhar Ali? Which hundreds are iconic? Sorry I don't remember any iconic innings of him which is better than Vijay's 2 150's on pitches which were substandard to be honest and 144 in Brisbane against the Aussie bowling attack.

Don't bother.

His 100 vs Sri Lanka in the highest 4th innings chase?
The pitch has nothing to do with it. According to your logic All of Dhoni's 100s would be redundant. The fact remains Vijay is yet to play a knock which will get people talking and taking him as a serious threat who can take away the game from the opposing team <--- Acricketfan Your thread asks why fans go gaga over batsmen like Ali and not Vijay. This is my answer.

I am not debating the quality of his batting. For all I know he could be better than everyone on that list. Get that through your heads.
I'm giving you a reason as to why he is underappreciated. What are you guys trying to prove?

He is underrated by most non-Indians and some Indians, and overrated by some Indians.

What we are trying to prove is that an innings will only be impactful if the bowling is good enough to take advantage of it. Any decent bowling attack would have taken advantage of Vijay's 144 at Gabba or 146 at Trent Bridge.

TheNightWatchman Pujara >>> Azhar Ali if you consider iconic, memorable, matching winning knocks.
Quality and ability wise too Pujara is light years ahead.

The issue here is why Vijay is underrated despite being one of the best batsmen in the world today (which Pujara and Ali are not). The OP maintains a high standard and bringing in Azhar Ali is unnecessary and serves no purpose.Smith and Warner were good examples though.

I can remember only 1 instance when Kohli scored a 100 and India won.Yet Kohli is rated higher than Vijay. Why ?

I don't see anyone going gaga over Azhar Ali. Even Pakistani fans here don't discuss him that much as they do the other players. He is a good batsman as his average 44 suggests and nothing more than that. Vijay and Azhar are both of almost same age and have similar average and are good players. They are not in the league of Smith, ABD, Williamson, Root etc...

Certainly not under-appreciated by selectors and that's what it is important.

Its just that we don't have many threads on Vijay which gives such an impression.

He is an excellent player much like Rahul Dravid who I doubt wud ever be talked much, even if he continues to play like this for a longer period.

Perhaps flamboyance and splendour make all the difference.

Proved his worth yet again on a difficult pitch against a world class bowling attack.

Awesome innings by this guy again. I predicted that he would be succesful in this series and I think he will.
But he's STILL underappreciated by fans. May be the absence of MSD or Kohli's slump will shift the focus on him.

Seriously very under appreciated this guy, he has delivered on difficult pitch once again, just for him i watched yesterday's game.

Murali Vijay set to join Essex

Murali Vijay, the Indian opening batsman, has joined Essex for the remainder of the County Championship 2018 season, the Board of Control for Cricket in India announced on Saturday, 8 September.

Vijay recently played in the first two Tests of the ongoing Test series against England and was subsequently dropped from the side following unimpressive performances. He registered scores of 20 and six in the first Test, while he was dismissed for a duck in both innings of the Lord's Test.

However, prior to the series, he scored 53 in the first innings in a practice match against his new county side – Essex.

The Indian batsman said that he was thrilled to be part of the county set-up, and said in a statement that he "can’t wait to play for Essex"

"I was here with the India side about a month ago and saw first-hand just how good the crowd is. I can’t wait to play for Essex and hopefully win some matches," said Vijay.

Anthony McGrath, the Essex County Cricket Club's head coach said: "We’re delighted that Vijay has chosen to come here. He’s a great batsman who can score runs at the top of the order.

"Vijay’s run-scoring ability means he can be the difference-maker in a game, and that skill is something we were looking to bring in towards the end of the season and something that we’re excited about.

"The campaign is coming to an end and we have some really big games over the next month, so getting someone in with the experience and international quality that Vijay possesses could make all the difference for us," he added.

Essex are currently fourth in Division One of the County Championship, having won four of their 11 matches, with as many losses and two draws while one of their games ended without a result.

Solid test player but he's now come to the end of his international career. He should be phased out. Done a good job for India though .

I still feel that he should be in the team ahead of Dhawan. Yes he had a poor couple of games but again if we are going to play experienced players, he should be ahead of Dhawan.

"Done With BCCI, Want To Find My Way Abroad...": India Opener's Startling Admission

Not all stories in Indian cricket have a happy ending. Same is the case with Murali Vijay it seems. The veteran opener who has played 61 Tests (3982 runs), 17 ODIs (339 runs), nine T20Is (169 runs) has said that he is "almost done" with cricket in India and wants to go abroad to pursue the game. The 38-year-old till recently played in Tamil Nadu Premier League. He last played for India in December 2018 in a Test match against Australia in Perth.

Murali Vijay said that his age is becoming a hindrance in getting opportunities in Indian cricket.

"I am almost done with BCCI (smiles) and I want to find my ways abroad. Play little bit of competitive cricket," Vijay told WV Raman on Wednesdays with WV, a weekly show on Sportstar.

"After 30 in India, it's a taboo (smiles). They see us as 80-year-olds walking on street. I don't want to get into any controversy . The media should also address it differently. I feel you are peaking in your 30s. Sitting here right now, I can bat the way I bat now. But unfortunately or fortunately, the opportunities are less, and I have to search for my opportunities outside."

"Maybe if I would have got as much backing as Virender Sehwag, things might have been different."

In 2020, Murali Vijay pulled out of the Tamil Nadu squad for the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. Recently, he featured in an amateur golf tournament. They participated in the Chennai Open Golf Championship

he cheated on a team mate by have relations with his wife, i think it was DK. He deserves no respect

Vijay is a successful test opener.

DK has achieved what? He is husband of India's most successful Squash player Dipika Pallikal although may have earned more money through IPL inspite of achieving less in his sports than his wife.

At the end of day, DK must be thankful of Vijay for this.

DK won India the Nidahas tri series with a last ball 6 which not many in international cricket have achieved. DK was unfortunate to be born in the same era as Dhoni. Dipika may have been most successful squash player but the sad truth is in public more people will recognize him than her.

Murali Vijay has a test avg of 38 with 10 f his 12 100s in India. He was a mediocre opener. If he was successful as an opener he wouldn't have been dropped.

Most importantly DK has character which Vijay lacks.

Lol, Murali Vijay should be thankful to BCCI which allowed him to play tests far more than he actually deserved.

And it was downright pathetic of him to name Sehwag in his comments. Sehwag was far more talented than Murali Vijay will ever be in his 7 births.

Murali vijay's second innings was a desperate move by DHoni as India lacked solid openers. It was like India going back to washed up RP singh just because he had decent outings in the previous tour. During his first outing he was decent. He and Kohli almost pulled off a 4th inning Gabba chase.

He was the best Asian opener during 2013-2014 season. Best Indian batsman when you combine Eng, Aus and SA tour. Unfortunately fizzled away quickly.

Another thing, the backing you get from the selectors is based on your talent and past performance. They backed Sehwag because they knew he had the ability to do great things in the future, when he eventually would come out of his bad phase. And that backing by the selectors of Sehwag bore great fruits.

Winning a Nidahas Trophy is not really some huge achievement. Even Stuart Binny produced a magical figure vs Bangladesh which not many can achieve. DK had a lifeline to prove himself via T20 World Cup last year but he failed in both games vs Pak and SA and was dropped for England game so he didn't really made the most of the chances he got.

Vijay on other hand is a test opener who has hundreds in Australia and England as opener apart from being pretty good in Asian conditions too and was a key member of Indian team during their transition. He alongwith Kohli and Rahane were pretty good overseas around 2013-14 and showed the character which I doubt DK ever showed. This was DK's chance in T20 World Cup but he produced nothing.

Now coming to public recognition, it doesn't really matter because DK won't be remembered highly among the Indian cricketers because his achievements are miniscule. His career basically went the Rayudu way.

Sehwag was also dropped if i am right. He forced his way back. Also Sehwag was a game breaker in Asian conditions. Bazballed long back to force a result. His occasional ENA failures should be viewed with context.

His performances in Asian conditions were so supreme because of his out of the world strike rate, his performances in SENA can be forgiven. And it's not like he did nothing in SENA, he had his moments there as well.

Journey man cricketer. Avg player. Was lucky that he got picked for the test team during his purple patch.

The team management kept him for too long and destroyed the peak years of Mayank.

I mean SEN conditions. He was decent in Australia much like most of the Indians. New zealand one s eries was terrible pitches. Other series he literally gifted his wicket away. Nothing to do with conditions.

I guess I understand the flak he is getting here. His comments suggests his is a case of sour grapes. He has himself to blame, his form was poor and he was done so rightly dropped.

However, he had a decent test career in my opinion but with competition from Rohit, Rahul, Dhawan and Mayank, he had to make way. No second thoughts really.

for 2 years from 2013-2015 he was just behind Virat and Rahane in the Indian team. But after that phase his inconsistency crept back in. His constant wish to play white ball cricket cost him his Test game. He had a great technique for an opener but when his white ball game crept in, he became lose outside off stump. Threw his wicket away a lot of times after spending lots of time at the crease.
