Bangladesh veteran Mushfiqur Rahim took to social media to announce his retirement from T20I cricket.

In the post, Mushfiqur Rahim explained the reason behind his decision to retire from the shortest format as he wants to focus on Tests and ODIs going forward. As a result, Mushfiqur Rahim, who has represented Bangladesh in every T20 World Cup since the inaugural edition, will not be available for the marquee event next month in Australia.

He also added that he will be available to play franchise league cricket.

"I would like to announce my retirement from T20 INTERNATIONALS and focus on Test and ODI formats of the game. I will be available to play franchise leagues when the opportunity arrives. Looking forward to proudly represent my nation in the two formats," said Mushfiqur Rahim in his post.

The decision comes after Bangladesh crashed out of the 2022 Asia Cup without a win against their names.

This comes as a second blow to Bangladesh heading into the T20 World Cup. Earlier this year in June, star opener Tamim Iqbal too retired from T20Is to concentrate on the longer formats.

Mushfiqur retires from the format having played 102 matches, in which he scored 1500 runs with six fifties and a high score of 72*. After having enjoyed a brilliant 2018 in the shortest format where he scored 397 runs at an average of 30.53 while striking at 132.33, the Bangladesh stalwart has looked off-colour in years thereafter. Most recently in the Asia Cup, he returned scores of 1 and 4 and also dropped a crucial catch in Bangladesh's must-win encounter against Sri Lanka.

The absence of experienced Rahim leaves a huge void in the Bangladesh middle-order going into a T20 World Cup in Australia. Shakib Al Hasan, who was only recently appointed the T20I captain, will have a task on his hand to find the player that fills the shoes of the veteran on such short notice.

Well done to him for taking this decision - maybe a point to ponder for others too.

Well not like he was going to be getting many T20 offers with that T20I career SR of 115. Made the smart decision for himself. Bangladesh though is even worse off then they were before.

He knows the international teams will hardly play ODIs going forward.

Will get an annual contract to play a handful of tests

He is a brilliant Odi player and a good test player.
T20 is the only format where he wasn't of much use.
Good decision.

Thank you Sir. Good decision. Few years too late but better late than never, I guess.

Mushy, has nothing to offer anymore in T20 even by BD T20 standard. A key player in ODI and TEST for BD. Better to focus on them remaining of his career.

I’ll fondly remember the 72 off 35 balls Mushfiqur scored against Sri Lanka in the Nidahas Trophy T20 match to help Bangladesh chase down 214. That was epic. Never thought Bangladesh could ever chase 200+ That too in SL.

Mushfiqur Rahim became the 3rd Bangladeshi batsman to complete 7000 runs in ODIs after Tamim Iqbal and Shakib Al Hasan during the second ODI against Ireland.

Mushfiq has reached quite a few milestones today.

Fastest ODI century for BD (came from 60 balls).

Reaching 7000 ODI runs. Fourth keeper to do so in history (after Sangakara, Dhoni, and Gilchrist). Also, third Bangladeshi to do so (after Tamim and Shakib).

I didn't watch it but it must have been insane hitting by Mushi... I keep following scores of almost all the games, Mushi came in to bat so late and still got a hundred, that's incredible.

He retired because he was dropped nevertheless brilliant innings today.

Mushfiqur Rahim made a 60-ball hundred, getting to the landmark on the final ball of the innings, in the second ODI against Ireland in Sylhet.

Rahim's hundred came from No.6 after he walked in to bat in the 34th over of the innings. The wicketkeeper-batter remained unbeaten on 100* as Bangladesh made their highest total in ODIs, bettering the 338 they had made in the previous match of the series.

As Sylhet witnessed another high score, Rahim also got to 7000 ODI runs, becoming the third Bangladesh batter after Tamim Iqbal and Shakib Al Hasan to the landmark.

His 60-ball hundred is now the quickest in ODIs by a Bangladesh player, bettering the 63-ball ton Shakib had made against Zimbabwe in Bulawayo in 2009.

I watched his innings live from the Sylhet stadium. He was hitting the ball so nicely.... Mushfiqur is back after quite sometime

He did well but let's not forget opponent was Ireland.

Ireland is exactly not a strong opponent in Asian conditions.

Playing a crucial knock here against Pakistan - picks up his half century.

His incredible style of play makes him an idol for the younger generation, and he stands as the most reliable batsman in the Bangladesh cricket team.

Today during the New Zealand vs Bangladesh, the 11th Match of the ICC World Cup. Mushfiqur Rahim scored a 50 when Bangladesh was struggling after 4 wickets went down quickly. Good knock by the Veteran wicket keeper batter.

Mushfiqur Rahim speaks about his rivalry with Virat Kohli:.

"Some batters in the world love sledging and get pumped up by that. So I never sledge him because he gets pumped up by that. I always tell my bowlers to get rid of him as early as possible,"

"Whenever I play against him, he always tries to sledge me every time I go in to bat because he is a really competitive guy and he doesn't want to lose any cricket match. I really love that rivalry with him and the challenge that comes with facing him and India,”

All of a sudden the first PP instead bad after all, in fact excellent 63-0 10ov. Despite slow steady start. BD need to play their own brand, own ways. No need to go gungho from word go, don’t listen to others or follow others. Steady start you can catch up if you’re still there on a good batting wicket!

Senior wicketkeeper-batter Mushfiqur Rahim stressed on the importance of blending experienced players with young talent in the T20 format, amidst criticism directed towards Bangladesh's senior cricketers.

Currently representing the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) franchise Fortune Barishal, Mushfiqur's team secured a spot in the final after a convincing six-wicket victory over Rangpur Riders in the second Qualifier on Wednesday.

At 36, Mushfiqur stands as one of the oldest players in the squad, alongside compatriot Mahmudullah (38) and Pakistan cricketer Shoaib Malik (42).

Despite facing criticism, all three veterans have made significant contributions throughout their campaign.

Mushfiqur responded to the criticism underlining the importance of melding experience with youthful talent in team building.

"Didn't you say before the tournament that Barishal is the 'team of the old'? Didn't you say that T20s can't be won with experience? I think this is the wrong concept. You need experience in every format. New players will come, and the older ones will go, but they will combine well to build the team.

We want to leave a legacy, and we want the likes of [Towhid] Hridoy and Tamim [Tanzid Hasan] to leave a legacy when they become senior players [for Bangladesh]. It is supposed to be smooth sailing," Mushfiqur said, as quoted from ESPNcricinfo.

He went on to state that preference should be given to the performance and fitness of a player rather than focusing on the age factor.

"It [the criticism] doesn't motivate me. It hurts me.

I can guarantee you that I am better than most players in terms of fitness. I can write it down. More than age, I think the criteria should be fitness and performance. Age is just a number," he added.

The whole Qualifier 2 clash between Rangpur and Barishal was tipped as a battle between Tamim Iqbal and Shakib Al Hasan. The differences between both players emerged, after Tamim retired from the ODI format before the 2023 World Cup.

However, he took back his retirement after meeting Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and later decided to step down from the ODI captaincy.

Both players were booed by the crowd on several occasions during the match. Mushfiqur stated that both players deserved better and said, "To be honest, if the limelight is on the two players, then the rest of us can relax. They will have their 'war', and we will watch. They are both legends.

They have given a lot to Bangladesh cricket. This 'bhua bhua' [a form of booing in Bengali] chant, if they have to hear it, the rest of us should be buried in the ground."

Fortune Barishal will take on the Comilla Victorians in the final of the BPL on Friday at the Sher-e-Bangla Stadium.

Brilliant knock Mushfiq. Wish you got the 200 though would’ve been the first Bangladesh ever to score double ton in Pakistan.

T20 was his weakest format. He has demonstrated remarkable improvement in both Test and ODI after a slow start. Since 2017, his Test batting average is over 48.

Assalamualaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu

I am announcing my retirement from the ODI format as of today.

Alhamdulillah for everything. While our achivements may have been limited on a global level, one thing is certain: whenever I stepped onto the field for my country, I gave more than 100% with dedication and honesty.

The last few weeks have been very challenging for me, and I have come to realize that this is my destiny. Allah says in the Quran: “Wa tu’izzu man tasha’ wa tu’zhilu man tasha’” - “And He honours whom He wills, and He disgraces whom He wills.” (3:26)

May Almighty Allah forgive us and grant righteous Iman to all. 🤲

Lastly, I would like to deeply thank my family, friends and my fans for whom I have played cricket for the last 19 years.

JazakAllah Khair. 👏

Was a world class ODI player from 2014 to 2019 at a stretch .

Rubbish before that , rubbish after that.

Bangladesh should have won more during that time when Shakib, Mushfiq, Tamim etc were at their best. They had a good core of players.

BD should've won at least one Asia Cup. They went to 3 Asia Cup finals. Missed opportunity.

I really admire him as a batsman, he has given clutch performances against top opposition, he could go on one on one battle with the top bowlers from any team which we hardly see from other Bangladeshi ODI batsmen.

I am definitely a fan of this guy, still he could have achieved more than what he did.

Has to be greatest bangladeshi batter.
Good bye legend musfiq.🥹🥹🥹

No. I think Tamim is the best Bangladeshi batter of all time. Tamim has 8000+ ODI runs which is the highest of all time for BD.

Mushi is 3rd (behind Tamim and Shakib).

Sachin's 100th 100 was spoiled by his Cameo. I remember that ... He was in the form of his life then.

Yup.

Tendulkar's 100th century came in that game.

It was a nice Asia Cup. Final was very close also.

Will be rmembered forever for his naagin dance and 2016 wc post after india lost sf against windies.

LOL.

I hated that nagin dance. Nagin dance is very feminine and childish.

BTW, Mushi didn't come up with nagin dance. It was initially started by a spinner named Nazmul. Sri Lankan cricket team trolled BD team with it. So, Mushi did the dance also in return. From there, it snowballed.

Anyway, glad BD team stopped doing it.

imagine close to two decades in ODI cricket and the only achievements you are remembered for is that you helped eliminate India from WC. Golden generation of BD retires without having won one single multi nation tournament.

Indian posters are salty about Mushi I guess (because he made a social media post supporting West Indies over India). :inti

Also, Mushi eliminated India twice (2007 WC and 2012 Asia Cup).

They are salty because a movement eliminated Indian agents from Bangladesh.

Lots of racism from them since then.

Not really. He was a mental midget who celebrated too early while Bangladesh choked against us at the World T20.

And this was when he was actually a good player.

He forged a respectable career in ODIs. I did not think he would ever be a successful ODI batter but he lasted the course and improved his numbers when pitch conditions and rules favoured him.

They should have atleast won Asia cup. Now it is a distant dream.
yes, but it's ok. I have come to realize not to judge any team just by tournament performance alone. What I would like to see is good management progression by BCB. Last board was completely incompetent. I mean the chairman said "Our target is next WC." What a clown. Finally they got booted.

Target is to qualify for next WC and play it. Don't think he meant winning it.

He is a bit clownish but was a good dependable bat in his prime and has served his country well. Farewell Mr. Frodo.

Best moment was him and Shakib eliminating India in 2007
Certainly one of them indeed. And also beating India 2012 Asia cup semi final where BD chased 290 to win. Mushy was tonking them all over the place, his 46 came off 25 balls with 3 sixes and 3 fours.

End of an era

An era of regular chhitrol and bezti on a monthly basis.

What can I say. Mushfiqur Rahim. Congratulations on a good long ODI career. You have been a top player Bangladesh cricket. You have given Bangladesh cricket many good memories. Some of the top ODI moments from you certainly was the 2007 CWC beating India, Asia Cup 2012 beating India, 2018 Asia Cup scoring match 144 off 150 balls against Sri Lanka and 99 against Pakistan. From 2012/13-2019 you was a very dependable middle order ODI batsman for BD. You served country well, being the player with the 8th longest ODI career in international cricket history.

Every good things comes to an end. A Bangladeshi cricketing legend sure.

Happy retirement and best of luck for the future.

One of Bangladesh's best batters. He was a good ODI batter and a pretty good player of spin. Didn't like him due to his immature behavior and statements but seems like he matured as a person in the last 4-5 years of his career.

Wasn't this guy involved in spot fixing in a newzealand test?

Apparently, he handled the ball on consecutive deliveries just to get out.

He failed to touch the ball on the first delivery, and then got out the second instance.
