NEW DELHI — A Muslim policeman posted in the Ramala police station in Baghpat district of Uttar Pradesh was suspended from his services by the department for growing beard.

Sub-inspector Intishar Ali was asked by his officers a few days ago to shave off his beard or face action. However, he chose to defy the dictum and, consequently, was served a suspension order.

“Yes, I have been suspended because of my beard.” Speaking with Clarion India from Baghpat, Ali said he is sporting the beard for religious reasons and has the right to do so. “Why should I remove my beard?,” he asked.

The office of Superintendent of Police, Baghpat confirmed the reports of Ali’s suspension to Clarion India citing violation of the dress code. PRO of SP Baghpat Abhishek Singh said: “With regard to the beard, he (Ali) was served a notice once in the past as well for misconduct but even then he kept violating the uniform code. Now he has been suspended.”

Ali, who was posted in Baghpat three years ago, hails from a village near Deoband in Saharanpur district. He said he was a devout Muslim and he would offer prayers regularly while on duty at the police station and no one had ever objected to his practice.

“I do my duty and also do my namaz. I never thought I would be punished like this for keeping a beard. I have my right to live and follow my religion,’ Ali said. “There are two more Muslim cops with me here but they do not have beard and it is their choice; I cannot force them to follow my path.”

As the news of suspension appeared on internet, it sparked sharp reactions from social media users who said that the UP police was being “unfair” against a Muslim cop.

People were quick to draw comparisons with other instances in their criticism of the action against Ali. Asif Khan, a social media activist, shared a picture of a cop kneeling before UP chief minister Yogi Adityanath.

However, according to a report by IANS, SP Baghpat said that as per the police manual, only Sikhs were allowed to keep a beard. He said that Ali should have asked for permission from the department and he kept defying the warnings.

When asked whether he was planning to challenge the suspension, Ali said he would request the department to reinstate him but he added that he would not accept the condition of shaving off his beard.

A similar controversy made news in November last year also when the police in Alwar district of Rajasthan asked nine Muslim policemen to shave off their beards. However, the order was withdrawn only the next day after an uproar.

Muslims constitute around 15% of India’s 1.3 billion population but their representation in the police is an abysmal 3-4%, according to a 2019 study by Tata Trust.

So I am assuming there are no Sikh police officers in India? Or is the no beard rule only for Muslims?

Good Decision. Exception is only made for the Sikh Members of the force.

There should be no room for sporting such Mullahesque beards in the Police Force or Army. Country before your religious identities , India is not an Islamic Republic.

They have exempted sikhs from it because as per them beard is not necessary in Islam but it is in Sikhism. A few years ago a muslim Indian army man was also thrown out of the army and declared as a "Bad soldier" for asking permission to sport a beard.

Indian muslims must be so proud of their country LOL

Lol do you see the irony in your post? Sikh’s religion is fine but no room for Islam. But anyways you seem like a brainwashed extremist so no point arguing with you.

Rules should be for everyone. India somehow bends too much for Sikhs.

Service rules of almost every force in India says no beards except for Sikhs.

The person in question knew the rules when he joined the force. He should not expect exceptions be made for him.

What’s the logic? How come Sikhs are the only ones allowed to practice their religion?

cos there army would be turned inside out if sikhs walked out. they are a sizeable minority in the forces as a whole, and a huge presence on the india pakistan border, naturally.

Arguing with an Indian about it will waste your time because he will begin teaching you your own religion. If you're a muslim and a Pakistani, thank your lucky stars.

Just like Polygamy is illegal for everyone except the Musalmaans in India. Different communities get different relaxations.

What a false equivalence! Marriage is a personal affair. Nobody brings their wives along with them to work. And muslims never asked polygamy to be banned for Hindus or anyone. The matter of sporting of beard while rendering services in the force is completely different.

He should be allowed to grow a beard now that he has shaved it off and proved his subordination, which is the first requirement in the forces.

Why is there discrimination in your rules?

It is true that most Muslims have very poor knowledge about their own religion.

And non-muslims have better knowledge of Islam than muslims?
Most muslims know what is required to stay muslim. For anything else there are experts on the religion. Muslims used to look at religious scholars like a person would look at a doctor. Very few do that now though.

Not necessarily better knowledge, but non followers of a religion have the better knowledge about the uncomfortable aspect about your religion. They need reasons for rejecting your religion, while you need reasons to stick with your religion. It was my muslim friends who taught me about the dark aspects of my own religion, sanatan dharma.

By getting raised inside a system, people tend to avoid to look through uncomfortable aspects of the system and tries to justify it via various means. In these cases, non Muslims can point the flaws better than Muslims when it comes to the religion because unlike Muslims, the non Muslims will be free from the restrictions of getting forced not to ask questions and using logics from real life.

Non-muslims have been pointing out flaws since time immemorial. Its nothing new and most of the times they end up displaying a superficial knowledge of the religion, knit picking out of context etc.

I don't see it that way. When someone criticises some aspect of my religion, it helps me dig deep. Doesn't matter if that person has superficial knowledge. What matters is I , the believer, should have as much knowledge as possible.

For eg, it was during school that my muslim friends told me that I worship the phallic representation of Lord Shiva. I was not aware of it earlier.
