Muslims fear backlash of India’s coronavirus fury

In Jharkhand, pregnant woman says told to clean up blood, loses child

Pregnant and bleeding, a woman who came to a Jamshedpur hospital was allegedly asked to clean up her blood, accused of spreading the coronavirus, and turned away-events which culminated in the loss of her child.

The Jharkhand Police has taken cognizance of the incident and the Jamshedpur SSP has been asked to inquire into the matter.

In a letter to the Chief Minister Hemant Soren, 30-year-old Rizwana Khatun said that she had started bleeding Thursday on afternoon after which she rushed to the MGM Hospital. “I was abused on the lines of my religion and was asked to wipe the blood. I could not because I was shivering. I was beaten up with slippers. I was shocked and rushed to a nursing home.there it came out that my child had died,” she alleged in her letter.

Asked about the matter Jharkhand Chief Secretary Sukhdev Singh said: “The matter is being inquired into.”

Modi should be condemning all the discriminatory behaviour, attacks and witch hunts against minorities instead of running about lighting candles.

But no, you won't hear a peep from him on this matter.

Discrimination against Muslims in India due to Covid-19

Meerut: A privately-run cancer hospital in western UP's Meerut waded into controversy this week after it said Muslim patients and their attendants would only be admitted if they tested negative for the COVID-19 virus. The outrageous declaration was made in an ad posted in a local newspaper.

Curiously, the same ad also hit out at Hindu and Jain patients, accusing the wealthy sections of both communities of being "misers" and demanding they contribute to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's PM Cares Fund; it is not known if the hospital claimed to regard donation to the fund as price of admittance for Hindus and Jains.

Faced with backlash over the advertisement, the hospital issued a clarification in a second advertisement. Nevertheless, a case has been filed against the owner of the hospital, who has been accused of "deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings".

Uttar Pradesh, one of the most populous states in the country and where Muslims form around 20 per cent of the population, is also one of the worst-hit by the novel coronavirus outbreak; over 970 cases have been recorded and 14 deaths have been linked to the virus.

Over 150 containment zones, or coronavirus hotspots, have been identified across the state. 70 cases and two deaths have been reported from Meerut, where the hospital is located.

The Valentis Cancer Hospital's specific reference to Muslim patients and the spread of the infectious COVID-19 virus comes amid nationwide hostile reaction to the Tablighi Jamaat, an Islamic sect that defied health warnings to hold a religious event in Delhi last month.

The Jamaat issue also found a mention in the hospital's advertisement.

The Health Ministry has said that around 30 per cent of all COVID-19 cases in the country (or over 4,200) have been linked to the event at the Markaz Nizamuddin, a 1,000-year-old complex. At least 9,000 people participated in the event with thousands later traveling to various parts of the country.

In its daily press briefing the ministry also said that around 60 per cent of coronavirus cases in UP (or around 590) were connected to the Tablighi Jamaat.

Across India the number of coronavirus cases has crossed 16,000, with 519 deaths included in that figure. The country remains under a lockdown imposed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi last month (and extended to May 3 last week) to break the chain of transmission of the virus.

A US congressional panel has expressed concern about a report that Hindus and Muslims are being segregated at a hospital for coronavirus patients in India.

Wards for confirmed and suspected Covid-19 cases at the Ahmedabad Civil Hospital in Gujarat state were being assigned according to the patient’s faith, according to a report in The Indian Express newspaper.

Dr Gunvant H Rathod, the medical superintendent at the hospital, was quoted as saying: “Generally [in India], there are separate wards for male and female patients. But here, we have made separate wards for Hindu and Muslim patients.”

Asked why patients were being segregated, the doctor said it was a “decision of the government” – something which the Gujarat authorities later denied was the case.

Gujarat has a recent history of tensions between religious communities, with the state witnessing some of the most bloody religious riots in India’s modern history in 2002, when Narendra Modi was the state’s chief minister. In February this year there were also clashes along religious lines, although they were overshadowed by the anti-Muslim violence in the capital Delhi at around the same time.

And the outbreak of coronavirus in India has also been used to stoke communal tensions, after a relatively large number of cases in several states were linked to a single conference event organised by an Islamic missionary group.

The US Committee on International Religious Freedom, a bipartisan panel of experts appointed by Congress, said in a tweet on Wednesday that it was “concerned with reports of Hindu and Muslim patients separated into separate hospital wards in Gujarat”.

“Such actions only help to further increase ongoing stigmatisation of Muslims in India and exacerbate false rumours of Muslims spreading Covid-19,” the body said.

It is not the first time the USCIRF has drawn attention to its concerns about India – the body was vocal in its criticism of the Modi government for failing “to provide protection and physical security for its citizens, regardless of faith” during this year’s Delhi riots.

Anurag Srivastava, India’s foreign ministry spokesperson, told reporters: “As if its peremptory commentary on religious freedom in India is not enough, the USCIRF is now spreading misguided reports on the professional medical protocols followed to deal with spread of Covid-19 in India.

“It must stop adding religious colour to our national goal of fighting the pandemic and distract from larger efforts.”

In its statement, the state government said that “no segregation is being done in civil hospital on the basis of religion”, adding patients were being treated “based on symptoms, severity etc and according to treating doctors’ recommendations”.

Since the initial report sparked international attention, the medical superintendent Dr Rathod has issued his own statement, claiming that he was “misquoted”.

“Patients are not segregated on the basis of faith … These reports in my name are false and baseless and I condemn it,” he said.

The Indian Express, which also quoted local government officials saying they would “enquire about” the segregation issue, said Dr Rathod was “accurately quoted” and that it stood by its report. The newspaper is one of India’s best-respected and widely read daily nationals.

Backlash after Indian hospital says no treatment for Muslims

Police have registered a case against a private hospital in India's Meerut city for putting out a newspaper ad saying it will not treat Muslims, unless they have proof of negative Covid-19 test results.

The ad spurred backlash on social media over the weekend, prompting the hospital to put out another apologetic one on Sunday.

In its first advert, the Valentis Cancer Hospital blamed the Tablighi Jamaat - an Islamic preaching group - for the rising number of infections in the city. Nearly 30% of India's total cases, which is more than 15,000, have been linked to a religious event organised by the group in March.

“All but two cases in Meerut are connections of the Tablighi Jamaat,” Dr Amit Jain, who is part of the hospital’s management, told The Wire news site.

The incident has led to many Indians associating the spread of the virus with Muslims.

After a wave of Islamphobic posts on social media, the government called for an end to divisive tweets and posts.

Days after the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation expressed concern over alleged incidents of “Islamophobia” in India, Minority Affairs Minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi on Tuesday said Muslims are prosperous in the country and those trying to vitiate the atmosphere cannot be their friends.

The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) on Sunday urged India to take “urgent steps” to protect the rights of its minority Muslim community and stop the incidents of “Islamophobia” in the country.

Asked about the OIC criticism, Naqvi said, “We are doing our job with conviction. The prime minister whenever he speaks, he talks about the rights and welfare of 130 crore Indians.” “If somebody cannot see this, then it is their problem. India’s Muslims, its minorities, all its sections, are prosperous and those people trying to vitiate this atmosphere of prosperity, they cannot be friends of Indian Muslims,” he told reporters.

The minority affairs minister asserted “secularism and harmony” is not a “political fashion”, but a “perfect passion” for India and Indians.

One non-profit in the Indian capital, Delhi, has found a way to connect the community, as Ramadan begins under lockdown with no gatherings at mosques allowed.

“We thought let’s give ourselves an alternative - let’s give out ration kits to families in need,” Irtiza Quraishi of the Marham non-profit said.

Volunteers will aim to deliver around 200 kits every night. Filled with essentials like wheat, rice and lentils, each kit weighs 18kg and is enough for a family of three or four to survive for a month, Mr Quraishi said.

His team of volunteers have secured passes that will allow them to drive through the city to drop off the rations, which has been funded by the Hamdard National Foundation.

He adds that Ramadan is a month to reflect but now “everything has changed”.

“Our ambitions, our targets for the year - it’s different now. It’s all about survival so we need to work together to make sure everyone survives this.

“The satisfaction from doing something like this is similar to praying at the mosque - giving to others is a form of prayer itself.”

NEW DELHI: In a sharp criticism of the Modi government on Thursday, Congress president Sonia Gandhi said that every Indian should be worried about the “virus of communal hatred” that the ruling party, the Bharatiya Janata Party, is spreading, even as the country is staring at large-scale economic losses because of the nationwide lockdown to contain the Covid-19 pandemic.

Speaking at the Congress Working Committee (CWC) video-conference meeting, she said that despite the fact that coronavirus has spread alarmingly fast in the last three weeks, the central government has acted “only partially and in a miserly way” on the suggestions that health experts and opposition members have given.

She added that the Modi government has also failed to show “compassion and alacrity” at a time when so many people have been severely impacted by the lockdown.

“Let me also share with you something that should worry each and every one us Indians. When we should be tackling the coronavirus, the BJP continues to spread the virus of communal prejudice and hatred. Grave damage is being done to our social harmony. Our party, we will have to work hard to repair that damage,” the Congress president said.

Accuses Indian government of acting ‘only partially and in a miserly way’ to contain Covid-19

She said that she had offered constructive cooperation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi several times and in various letters suggested steps to be taken to mitigate the sufferings of working people. “Unfortunately, they have been acted upon only partially and in a miserly way. The compassion, large-heartedness and alacrity that should be forthcoming from the Central government is conspicuous by its absence,” she said.

She then went on to speak about the distress “our kisans and khet mazdoors, migrant labour, construction workers, and workers in the unorganised sector”, facing at a time when trade, commerce and industry has come to a halt.

“The Central government does not appear to have a clear idea on how the situation will be managed after May 3. A lockdown of the present nature after that date would be even more devastating,” she observed, as she lashed out against the Centre for failing to conduct mass testing and provide protection gear to frontline health workers.

She said that even as testing remained low, there was still a short supply of testing kits and safety gear for health workers were insufficient or of very poor quality.

She also spoke about the looming hunger situation in the country, and the government’s failure to release food grains from its stock to at least 11 crore people who do not have ration cards. “It should be our commitment to provide 10kg of food grains, 1kg of pulses and half a kg of sugar to each person of the family every month, in this hour of crisis,” she said.

The Congress chief said that families of an estimated 12 crore people who lost their jobs in the first phase of the lockdown should be given at least Rs 7,500 to cope with the crisis.

She also said that “funds legitimately owed to our states” had been held back by the Centre. She said despite such limitations, the Congress-ruled states have done well to fight the pandemic.

‘Economic Task Force’

Following the CWC meeting, party’s chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala and general secretary (organisation) released a statement. It hit out at the Centre for failing to constitute an “Economic Task Force”, which the Prime Minister had announced a month ago.

It emphasised that only a cooperative approach with states will help tide over the crisis. “The fight must be bottom-up instead of the top-down, one size fits all policy currently on display. The Central government can vastly bolster the states’ efforts by providing them with adequate financial support starting with releasing their full share of the Goods and Services Tax collected so far and allowing them greater fiscal space to borrow.”

The CWC also recommended that migrant workers “may be allowed to travel under strict conditions of health safety” and “be provided with adequate money and food in the interim”. It also said that the stranded workers should be allowed to return to work after the lockdown.

It urged the government to work on four fronts, containment and treatment, livelihood support, maintenance of supplies, and economic revival, for a holistic approach to tackle the crisis.

Other Congress leaders and chief ministers also pitched in with suggestions.

Former prime minister Manmohan Singh said: “Success of lockdown is to be judged finally on our ability to tackle Covid-19…Co-operation bet*ween the Centre and states is key to success of our fight against Covid-19…”

NEW DELHI (AP) — India’s government is blaming an Islamic missionary meeting for a surge in coronavirus cases, triggering a wave of violence, business boycotts and hate speech toward Muslims that experts warn could worsen the pandemic in the world’s second-most populous country.

The stigma faced by India’s Muslims, poorer and with less access to health care than other groups, is making health workers’ battle against the virus even tougher, according to veterans of other epidemics. India has about 24,500 confirmed coronavirus cases — about one in five of which have been linked to the missionary meeting — and 775 deaths, and the outbreak may not peak until June.

“Not only is the (Muslim) community at a higher risk of being infected, but they will also be at a high risk of spreading the virus,” said Dr. Anant Bhan, a bioethics and global health expert. “It becomes a cycle that will continue.”

About 8,000 people in the Tablighi Jamaat congregation met for three days in March at the group’s compound in the crowded Nizamuddin area of New Delhi, shortly before the Indian government banned large gatherings. The compound stayed open, later giving shelter to people stranded in a 21-day lockdown imposed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on March 24, according to the group’s spokesman, Mujeeb ur Rehman.

On the second day of the lockdown, a government raid on the compound discovered the largest virus cluster in India. Police filed a case against some of the group’s leaders for violating the ban, a charge the group denies. Officials said Tuesday they have arrested 29 people, including 16 foreigners, who participated in the missionary meeting.

India’s communal fault lines, still stressed by deadly riots over a new naturalization law that excludes Muslims, were split wide open by the allegations against Jamaat.

Politicians in Modi’s ruling Hindu-nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party were quoted on TV and in newspapers describing the Jamaat incident as “corona terrorism.”

False news targeting Muslims began to circulate, including video clips purportedly showing congregation members spitting on authorities. The clips were quickly proven to be fake, yet by April 1, the hashtag “CoronaJihad” was trending on Twitter in India.

Lav Aggarwal, joint secretary of India’s health ministry, repeatedly called out the congregation by name in daily news briefings. On April 5, he said the number of virus cases was doubling in just 4.1 days, and would have been a slower 7.4 days “if the additional ... cases due to the Tablighi Jamaat meeting would not have arisen.”

That same day, Dilshad Mohammad took his life.

Panic, blame and stigma were spreading across India when the 37-year-old chicken peddler was shunned by his neighbors in Bangarh, a village in the hilly state of Himachal Pradesh, for giving two members of the Jamaat congregation a ride to their village on his scooter. Neighbors accused him of deliberately trying to infect them with the virus, which causes the COVID-19 disease.

Karthikeyan Gokulachandran, the district police superintendent, blamed his suicide on stigma.

In Rajasthan state, a pregnant Muslim woman was turned away from a public hospital because of her religion, resulting in the death of her 7-month-old fetus, said Vishvendra Singh, the state’s tourism minister.

In Uttarakhand, Hindu youths forced Muslim fruit vendors to stop selling. Shots were fired at a mosque in Gurugram, a suburb of New Delhi, and a Muslim family in the neighboring state of Haryana was attacked by neighbors who accused them of not turning off their lights on April 9, the night Modi had asked the country to extinguish household lights for 15 minutes in a show of national unity.

Doctors who studied previous epidemics warn that stigma and blame for a contagious disease weaken trust in marginalized communities, threatening decades-long efforts against illnesses such as polio and tuberculosis by making people less likely to seek treatment.

Stigma in general is adding to India’s coronavirus death toll, said Dr. Randeep Guleria, head of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in Delhi and among the architects of the country’s response.

“It is actually causing increasing morbidity and mortality. Because of the stigma that is happening, many patients who have COVID-19 or who have flu-like symptoms are not coming forward,” he said.

Muslims were already at a disadvantage when the coronavirus entered India.

India’s 200 million Muslims account for 14% of the population and are the largest minority group in the Hindu-majority nation and also the poorest, surviving on an average of 32.6 rupees ($0.43) per day, a 2013 government survey found.

Muslims also have less access to health care. About 40% of villages with large Muslims populations don’t have medical facilities, a government report in 2006 said. The government in Maharahstra -- the state with the biggest concentration of coronavirus cases -- said Muslim-majority areas had a “paucity of health facilities” in a 2013 report. It said the “threat of communal riots” forced Muslims to “live together in slums and ghettos” where social distancing is often impossible.

In deeply polarized India, some Modi critics have suggested that the government singled out the Jamaat congregation for strategic reasons.

The “vilification of Muslims was done to hide the government’s mismanagement in dealing with the virus and their callousness,” said Professor Tanweer Fazal, a sociologist at the University of Hyderabad.

Aggarwal, the health ministry spokesman, declined to respond.

On Sunday, Modi tweeted that the coronavirus does not discriminate based on race, religion or creed.

“Our response and conduct thereafter should attach primacy to unity and brotherhood. We are in this together,” he said.

His remarks came hours after the Organization of Islamic Cooperation’s human rights body condemned the “unrelenting vicious Islamophobic campaign in India maligning Muslims for spread of COVID-19.”

Astounding level of journalism on display.

Modi should be condemning all the discriminatory behaviour, attacks and witch hunts against minorities instead of running about lighting candles.

But no, you won't hear a peep from him on this matter.

He won't and neither will his bhakhts. They were all jumping on me when I posted that news about the Rajasthan woman losing her child. Even then I said that child's father was forced to change his statements. Now you are getting more and more news of discriminations towards muslims especially in hospitals.

Why are you guys not saying anything now? Mesozoic Rajdeep

Ready to donate plasma for therapy: Tablighi Jamaat

‘Three mosques were turned into quarantine centres’

The Telangana and Andhra Pradesh chapter of the Tablighi Jamaat is ready to cooperate with the State government and donate plasma for convalescent plasma therapy trials to treat COVID-19 patients.

Speaking to The Hindu, a senior Tablighi Jamaat worker said that three mosques had served as quarantine centres for workers and others as well.

He said that if and when the State government requires plasma donations, workers who were quarantined, and also those who were discharged after being treated for COVID-19, would donate. “In letter dated April 21, Maulana Saad (emir of the organisation) encouraged us to cooperate with the authorities and donate plasma to help other COVID-19 patients. We are more than willing to do that, if this is required from us. We will motivate our workers to donate. To spread awareness, we will speak to the emirs of different areas in both Andhra Pradesh and Telangana and work with the governments as we have done in the past,” said Masood Junaidi, a senior Tablighi Jamaat worker, who is also a businessman.

‘Not about religion’

He said that once the State government gives the nod, each district and city and neighbourhood emir would convince workers to come forward and volunteer. “This is not about religion. It is about helping one another,” he said.

In the recent past, at least three mosques of the Tablighi Jamaat were turned into quarantine centres. These include the Jama Masjid Moazzampura in Mallepally and the Masjid-e-Alamgir in Shanti Nagar.

This is even more tragic to see in Ramadan.

I've been saying this years before Modi was elected but we still have Indian Muslims believing they are equal in now what is Hindutva India.

It's time for a partition 2.0. Let the Muslims and Hindus live on their own terms otherwise this ticking time bomb will explode with mass murder on both sides.

Can see that happening in the future now. May be in 2047? India will no longer be a secular country and will become a dictatorship. :inti

Im sorry you have to read so much negativity towards India, esp as you are a fine person and fine poster(not that I agree on everything). We also have other Indian brothers such as Swashbuckler.

Sadly your nation has been taken over by a large number of extremists who are not only ruining the secular nature of India but imho causing great damage to the ancient and peaceful religion of Hindusim.

Every nation has extremists, it's human nature but not many elect them to office. Hope you and your family are well bro and thanks for adding some sense from the Indian side.

One partition happened. Muslims didnt leave India and stayed here. Except J and K there is no muslim majority state in India. So there will be no partition. Not that Indian muslims care much about the views of Brit pakistanis.

People like you will keep dreaming of this partition.

Many couldn't leave, something which RSS history books dont mention.

They will care if youre friends in the RSS keep butchering them. Why not spend the same time and effort telling the BJP and RSS they are wrong to attack Muslims time and again? We both know why lad :sachin

Try the BBC, they have done dozens of programmes regarding partition and UK news media has hundreds of articles. People are still alive today to tell their story of why they couldn't leave, mainly because of the todays RSS's grandparents butchering Muslims.

I find it hilarious that a taliban supporter who routinely advocates violence is giving sermons.

lol. It may be shocking to you but everyone has the right to self defence or do you think only the RSS with their khaki shorts have this right?

When the British came, those Hindus who fought them were terrorists? Im sure they were, as the RSS wanted to be ruled over right?

Muslims in India are being turned into second class citizens. Do you accept a Hindu and Muslim in India are equal?

Chennai Muslim woman faces communal abuse after COVID-19 recovery, brother speaks out

Days after a Chennai-based doctor was denied a dignified burial after he died of COVID-19, another shocking incident of ostracism has come to light in the city. A 55-year-old Muslim woman was allegedly subjected to communal slurs and abusive language after she recovered from COVID-19 and was discharged from a private hospital.

The woman’s brother AJ Jawad, a lawyer, took to Facebook to narrate the ordeal and the humiliation that his sister had faced in the hands of her neighbours on Wednesday.

The woman and her 68-year-old husband tested positive for COVID-19 in the last week of March and were undergoing treatment at Apollo Hospital, Vanagaram. The woman was discharged on Wednesday while her husband is still at the hospital.

“My sister and her husband live in a house near an apartment complex in Chennai. My brother-in-law is still in the hospital since he is a little weak and we wanted him to stay there and get better. He has already tested negative for COVID-19. On Wednesday, when my sister-in-law went to the terrace to dry the clothes, she was yelled at by one of the residents in the apartment complex, who used communal slurs and other obscene words against her,” Jawad told TNM.

She was called ‘Tablighi’, a word being used as an islamophobic slur after several clusters of COVID-19 cases in the country were traced to the Tablighi Jamaat meet in New Delhi which was held in violation of the restrictions that had come in place.

“My brother-in-law did not attend the Tablighi Jamaat conference in Delhi and he was going to his office in Chennai every day till the lockdown. We have no idea from where they contracted the infection,” Jawad said.

What pained Jawad even more was the kind of shaming that the house-owner, who lives in the ground floor of his sister’s building, had to face because of this.

“After news broke out that my sister and her husband were diagnosed with COVID-19, the neighbours actually called for a fire engine and sprayed water all over that building. The house-owner was also not allowed to come out of their house to dispose of the garbage or anything. The house-owner had to send his son in the middle of the night to their relative’s house to pick up basic groceries since they were being shamed during the daytime if they stepped out,” Jawad said.

Adding that it was a certain corporation worker who helped his sister get essentials on Wednesday, Jawad said that the Chennai City Police Commissioner AK Viswanathan had called him to express his regret over the incident.

“I'm extremely grateful to Mohana, the local sanitary inspector, who made sure that my sister’s needs were met. She went above and beyond her job description to ensure this, at a time when I couldn’t step out due to the lockdown. The Assistant Commissioner of Police also checked on my sister and warned the neighbours from the terrace using a megaphone. He said that strict action will be taken against those who stigmatise COVID-19 patients based on caste, religion etc,” he said.

This is not the first incident of stigmatisation that has come out around the disease. Around a week ago, a group of men who were going to bury Dr Simon Hercules, who had died due to COVID-19, were met with angry residents and attacked. Following outrage in the media about the attack, the Chennai police booked around 15 persons under the Goondas Act for attacking the Corporation staff and others who were arranging Dr Simon’s burial.

Police must investigate, there are bad apples everywhere, we don't know who the neighbors are or whether the accusations are true or not. It isn't about them, it is about how civil society and authorities react, that is what sets apart a civilized society from an uncivilized one.

‘We’ve stopped going there’: Muslim fruits suppliers in Noida speak of discrimination and hostility

In the aftermath of the Tablighi Jamaat cluster case, Muslims in India have been earmarked as vectors of the novel coronavirus. One specific form this prejudice takes is the coronavirus-positive Muslim fruit vendor. WhatsApp forwards, politicians, and even television news channels have participated in creating this typecast.

Last week alone, two elected local leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party in Uttar Pradesh were caught on tape unleashing anti-Muslim slurs against fruit vendors in their constituencies. In Deoria, MLA Suresh Tewari was seen asking people not to buy vegetables from Muslims. In Lucknow, MLA Brajbhushan Rajput was filmed humiliating a Muslim vendor.

In April, Newslaundry reported on how channels like TV9 Bharatvarsh lent legitimacy to such rumours by broadcasting misleading segments, coining terms like “corona criminals” for Muslim vendors. The Press Information Bureau, the information arm of the Indian government, decried a viral audio clip claiming that vendors lick vegetables and fruits before selling them. Fact checkers at Alt News busted a false video claiming that a Muslim vendor in Bijnor was sprinkling urine on fruits.

However, the discrimination is not limited to only rural pockets of North India. In Noida and Noida Extension, Muslim fruit vendors claim they have faced hostility and discrimination since the lockdown began. There are over 50 hotspots in Noida and Greater Noida combined. About 500 vehicles transport supplies in the area every day.

Newslaundry spoke to vendors who have been specially assigned by the district administration to supply fruits and vegetables in sealed hotspots. They speak of facing antagonism in high-end residential societies as well as in cramped urban villages.

Mohammad Tariq, 30, has been selling fruits to retail vendors for two years in Noida. After the lockdown, the administration asked him to supply these to Alpha One, a hotspot in Greater Noida. “Some people there looked at us with contempt and told others that they should not buy fruits from these Muslims,” Tariq told Newslaundry over the phone.

Tariq had ventured into the area with four other associates. “One of my boys is Hindu. But they were not asking us to leave on our face. A few people were telling others not to buy from us,” he explained. Tariq claimed that some people did choose not to approach him, but the rest bought what he had to sell.

But things got a little rough. “Once that did not work, they kept saying the Muslims are selling things at higher rates. They said we sold potatoes for Rs 50 a kilo — we didn’t! The penny dropped when the local Residents’ Welfare Association president threatened to call the police because of these higher rates. We packed up. I don’t want to go there again.”

This also happened with Imran, 24, who has been a fruit vendor since he was 16. After the lockdown, he was assigned to deliver fruits and vegetables in a few hotspots — all residential societies — in Greater Noida and Noida Extension. “We had a mobile stall near Gaur City in Noida Extension. We had to remove it,” Imran told Newslaundry. “On April 20, our boys returned from work and told me local residents were harassing them for being Muslims.”

Imran claimed that residents asked the names of his associates and where they were from. He said: “Two days after their inquiry, the boys said they were asked to leave. I asked them to stop going there after that. The residents found one of their own choice, a Hindu, and he’s the supplier there now.”

Imran has now shifted shop to Cherry County, a red zone, and Nirala Greenshire, a green zone, in the vicinity. He says he faces no discrimination there. “There are all kinds of people. I know how to ignore the wrong ones,” he said.

Khalid Khan, 30, another fruit vendor, moved his stall from a hotspot last week. “I had been assigned to Vishnoli village, a hotspot in Dadri, by the district magistrate’s office. Fruits and vegetables weren’t reaching there because of the quarantine,” Khan told Newslaundry. “I started going there in mid-April. For the first few days, people there bought whatever they needed. It seems like when customers were stocked up, they started spreading these ‘spitting’ rumours about us.”

He added: “They were very brash with me and my boys, and said we put our saliva on fruits and vegetables. The village head was especially abusive. He accused us of selling at higher rates and said this is how these Muslims are.”

On April 25, Khalid chose to abandon the venture. “This is happening because we are Muslims, and this never happened before,” he said. “I don’t understand why people have started behaving like this. I have seen these rumours spreading on WhatsApp but I just ignore them.”

Tariq also maintained that he did not face this kind of bigotry prior to the lockdown. “This government does not want this to not happen. They say it shouldn’t happen but don’t step in when it does,” he alleged. “The social mentality is changing. All this circulates on WhatsApp but why believe it?”

I told him that people do actually believe it. “They’ll stop believing it in five or 10 years when it’ll ruin them,” he said.

Imran is more optimistic. “I’ve been supplying fruits and vegetables at 10 to 15 other places. Things have been going fine there, without any problem. Sometimes, those with lower earnings conspire against the sellers who do better to get them out of the picture,” he said. “They want to make money. It happens. We’re not in this for money. This is a national duty.”

Santosh Yadav, secretary of the Mandi Parishad in Noida, told Newslaundry that no complaint of religion-based discrimination towards fruit vendors had reached the district administration. “It is a serious claim and it would have definitely reached the administration had it occurred. But to my knowledge, no such discrimination has taken place,” Yadav said.

He added that vendors continue to supply fruits and vegetables for more than two weeks without hassle.

Yogi adityanath says :

In Uttar Pradesh and other places where the spread of the coronavirus has been seen, Tablighi Jamaat is behind it. Had they not hidden the disease and went about like its carriers, then perhaps we would have controlled the coronavirus outbreak to a large extent," he had said.

Politicians should refrain from making such statements. They should watch their words.

IMO, tablighi batch didn't try to spread on purpose they only wanted to conduct the event innocently. But if they r intentionally hiding (as Yogi claims) then it is wrong & they should cooperate with authorities.

Mumbai Police files FIR against Arnab Goswami, accuses him of spreading hatred

The Mumbai police registered an FIR against Arnab Goswami, editor and owner of Republic TV channel on Saturday following a complaint that he tried to create hatred against Muslims last month.

The case was registered at Pydhonie police station and investigation has been initiated, police said.

Irfan Abubakar Shaikh, secretary of Raza Educational Welfare Society and a resident of Null Bazar in South Mumbai in his complaint to the police alleged that both the channel and Goswami were trying to create hatred against the Muslim community and targeted a mosque in Bandra that had no link to the protest by migrants on April 14.

Shaikh said that on April 29, the Hindi channel Republic Bharat had used footage of the Bandra protest by migrants who had gathered near Bandra railway station. Arnab Goswami was anchoring the show.

“There was no link or issue related to the mosque near the Bandra station. The only issue was that the migrants had gathered in the open space near the mosque. But Arnab purposely highlighted the mosque to create communal disturbance in the city,” said Shaikh in his compliant to the police.

Shaikh highlighted alleged comments by Goswami like ‘Ab se thodi der pehle Mumbai ke Bandra me Jama Masjid Hai.’ Aur Is Jama Masjid Ke Pass Achanak Hazaro logo Ki Bheed Jama Hogae’. (Thousands of people gathered outside Jama Masjid in Bandra) ‘Mumbai ke Bandra me masjid Ke pass kisne bheed jutae. (Who gathered the crowd outside the mosque in Bandra?) ‘Lockdown me har Bheed Masjid ke pass kyu Juti Hai? (Why is it that crowds gather near every mosque during lockdown), which he claimed fuelled hatred against Muslims.

“There were many such questions and debate on the channel intended to blame the Muslim community for the spreading of Covid-19 disease. Goswami had made many such hate filled comments against the community, targeting it,” the complainant said.

Shaikh said Goswami linked the Bandra Mosque to the migrants’ protest without any reason and gave a communal colour to the protest which had no link or involvement if any particular community.

The Pydhonie police registered a case under various sections of the Indian penal code.

“We have registered a case against Arnab Goswami and the owner of Republic TV for the hatred. Further investigation is going on. As part of evidence after taking the statement we have collected the footage of the shows with the clips in a pen drive as evidence,” said a police officer from Pydhonie police station.

One of the hotspots in Lucknow’s Sadar Bazar is called ‘Masjid Ali Jaan and nearby areas’. Similarly, some others mentioned in the list of Covid-19 hotspots are ‘Mohammadiya Masjid and nearby areas’ in Wazirganj, ‘Khajoor Wali Masjid and adjoining areas’ in Triveni Nagar and ‘Phool Bagh/Nazarbagh Masjid and adjoining areas’.

Ashamed to call this Bisht an Indian. Always looks to polarize Indian citizens on the basis of their religion.

Poster barring entry of Muslim traders in Indore village surfaces, case registered

A poster prohibiting the entry of Muslim traders in a village in Madhya Pradesh’s Indore district was removed by police on Sunday. A case has also been registered against unknown persons.

“Muslim vyapariyon ka gaon mein pravesh nishedh hai (Muslim traders are not allowed in the village),” the poster, which was reportedly signed on behalf of residents of Pemalpur village in Depalpur tehsil, read. The poster was apparently put up on Saturday.

DIG (Indore) Harinarayanchari Mishra told The Indian Express that the poster was removed as soon as the police learnt about it. He said a case against unknown persons was registered since it was immediately not known who put the poster.

Upping the ante against the state police and Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, former chief minister and Congress leader Digvijaya Singh tweeted, “Is such act not a punishable offence under our law?”

“Such a division in the society is not in national interest,” he added.

Original report had no mention of 'Jamaatis'.

The Twitter user who posted this has "BJP worker" in his profile and the tweet is still available with 3000+ retweets and likes.

1. Village is a public place and no one can be denied entry.

2. They have the choice of dealing or not dealing with a trader.

I was reading in a book somewhere that during civil rights movement AA were not allowed to shop in some businesses because of their skin color I thought at the time it was in the 60s how can this happen in this day and age cause it's a clear form of biggotary and people can't justify after all this is 21st century

Everyone has the freedom to go to a public place. Similarly everyone has the right to decide which business they spend their money at. No law can force a person to buy or not to buy from a legitimate business. Thats freedom of choice.

Exact same words were said during jim crow laws it's not freedom of choice when a whole group is discriminated against than apartheid, Jim crow would be right of it was freedom of choice
That was the big part of the struggle for these people

Man your views are disgusting ahh!! Surely there's a limit for the madness

I am not interested in Jim Crow or his laws.

I am interested in laws that govern India.

They give every Indian the right to conduct legitimate business.

They give everyone the right to decide who they conduct their legitimate business with.

Thats the long and short of it. No one is going to force or will be able to force anyone into doing business with anyone.

Police complaint filed against News18 India anchor Amish Devgan in Mumbai for spreading fake news on his show ‘Aar Paar’

Mumbai: A Police complaint has been filed against News 18 anchor Amish Devgan for spreading false news on his show Aar Paar on May 1, 2020. The Police complaint has been registered over his false claims of Muslims offering of namaz in Kurla masjid, Devgn also showed a fake video claiming the gathering of people near Kurla Masjid.

The Police complaint was registered at the Kurla police station in Mumbai.

The founding member of Public Care Foundation Shahzad Khan and President of All India Transport Congress (INTUC), Azim Khan filed a complaint against Amish Devgn for spreading fake news through his show Aar Paar on News 18 channel, Amish is accused of hurting the sentiments of the Muslim community.

Shahzad Khan, the founding member of NGO Public Care Foundation, in conversation with Newsd said that the dispute took place in Kurla on April 29 but Amish aired the video of the same on May 1, claiming it was of the same day. He further told us that the location of the dispute between the localites and the police took place in the Wafati lane area which is not even near to Kurla Masjid.

Shahzad further added to it that Amish’s show has not only hurt their sentiment but has also lead the attack on Maharashtra government as it raised the questioned toward their lockdown imposition rules. Khan said that the Mumbai Police and the Muslim community was targeted with the fakes news of Amish Devgn and thus they have filed a complaint against him.

The Public Care Foundation and INTUC has demanded the imposition of Section 129(a) and Section 124(a) on Amish Devgn and News18 for spreading fake news.

The complaint further added that on May 1, Amish Devgn’s show Aar Paar was aired at 7:40 PM, Devgn showed the fake news and claimed it that Muslim community was offering prayers at the Kurla Masjid amid the lockdown.

Amish on his show had said that ” Iss samay ki bohot badi khabar, Kurla se tasveerein aa rahi hai waha par namaaz ke baad masjid mein logo ki jyada bheed thi toh police vahan par gayi hai, Police ke sath badsalukhi ki gayi hai.”

Anchor Amish also showed a clip of people gathering at Masjid by claiming the false statement.

Amish Devgn of News18 India has often faced public ridicule on social media. A Congress spokesperson had once famously called him a ‘names’ during a live TV debate on Devgn’s own TV channel. Since then, his critics have frequently targeted him by calling him a ‘cheap copy of Arnab Goswami.’

This is violation of rights of a minority religion, in this case Jains. Just like Muslims have the right to eat halal meat slaughtered by a muslim according to islamic ways, so does a Jain.

Jains are a very wealthy and close knit community it remains to be seen what they do.

This may open flood gates of litigation and states will have to back off finally.

I think the point is that Muslims were singled out in the poster.

It's a relatively minor issue compared to much of what's been covered earlier in the thread, though.

They should had rather said who is working on it or that it was made per Jain ways.

Halal is discriminatory yes but Jains need to tell why Hindus, Christians, Sikhs or Buddhists are allowed to work in the bakery and not only Muslims then this would make sense, you cannot single out.

Also he is arrested.. law was carried out.

Yes indeed, that was pointed out in the tweet I added.

On another note, did anyone see the videos on social media of that Sudhir guy explaining the five pillars of Islam after the FIR filed against him? Found that quite amusing.

1. Village is a public place and no one can be denied entry.

2. They have the choice of dealing or not dealing with a trader.

If by choice means putting a signboard saying that Muslims traders can't come or by choice you mean buyers should be encouraged or discouraged to buy based on religion of trader then that's an extremely worrying situation.

Initial investigation by the Delhi Police Crime Branch has found that an audio clip mentioned in the police FIR against Markaz Nizamuddin head Maulana Saad Kandhalvi, which suggested he had asked Tablighi Jamaat members not to follow social distancing norms and prohibitory orders, may be “doctored” and stitched together using several audio files.

Halal meat means muslim only butcher.

So i guess people have the choice of hiring or not hiring a person based on religion.
