Younis Khan speaking to the press today:

[Younis Khan's advice to Babar Azam in light of the plethora of advice which was seen to be passed on to him during the 2nd T20I]

"Babar Azam has been our captain for a while in T20Is and also recently been appointed as ODI Captain; It can get difficult for a captain when he is receiving so much advice and also suggestions on field as well; Whether the suggestions are coming from off the field or from inside the field, its meant for the betterment [for the team]; My simple advice to him when I discuss leadership on a one-to-one, which is based on my own experience as captain when I used to have 5-6 former captains around me, is to take decisions by himself and take the initiative in that regard; He does do that now as well but to observers it seems that people from the dressing room or on the field are trying to convince him; When you are a leader, you have to take your own decisions but if your intentions are good then you can change an incorrect decision [based on advice]; I can tell you that I have made a a lot of mistakes as a captain but my intention behind that was right and sometimes such decisions can be changed [with advice]; My advice to Babar is that as a leader do try and take your own decisions; He should not be afraid of taking his decisions and even if the decisions are incorrect, then you can learn from those mistakes"

Why would he advise Babar in public?

To the press, on such questions, Younis should say, "Babar is his own man and makes his own decisions. What you are saying is non sense. He is our captain and we back him 100%."

In private, he should advise Babar what he has said to the press.

Be a professional, Younis.

What he is saying is that this is what he's told Babar - its his way of saying it, I guess.

Yes sir, but it just weakens Babar further to be advised in public on his weaknesses. It confirms what everyone has been saying about him and helps him not at all.

This is just basic media training.

Stop dissecting every random comment and finding something to pick on. I have seen this kind of statement in other sports as well. Don't need to overreact mate.

In other words he is saying don't listen to Misbah if you want to succeed.

I feel sorry for Babar. He's surrounded by seniors and ex cricketers telling him to do this and that and to make matters worse Babar has a dossile agreeable nature. It's hard for him to succeed in this job, no matter how hard he tries, people around will continue to undermine his authority and make his position weak.

What I fear most is if this even starts to hurt his batting at some point.

This is exactly why I had suggested that Pakistan must groom Rizwan for captaincy.

Sachin did well to put behind his similar captaincy stints. I hope Babar continues to follow his footsteps because the similarities are just too obvious to not ignore. Everything is aligning similarly.

In other words he is saying don't listen to Misbah if you want to succeed.

Unfortunately, he still has to contend with the Maliks, Hafeezes and Iftikhars foisted upon him.

I don’t think this is helpful.

Look at the truly great coaches from other sports eg Ferguson at Man Utd. They keep all discussions to the dressing room and never reveal anything outside.
Younis, I am sure, has given the advise directly to Babar. There was no need to share with the press what he has told him.

All it does is undermine him.

Have they been foisted upon him though? To my knowledge Babar wanted Malik and Hafeez back in the side post Australia and Misbah all too happily obliged.

Babars made his bed, now he should lie in it. The basic point is the same, these senior cricketers are there to advise, but Babars final decision should have his authority stamped on it.

That's the official party line but I'm not sure if I actually believe that despite Babar's statements. He knows Hafeez and Malik have a lot of backing and knew he was powerless to stop them as both have made it clear they wish to play on till the T20 WC's.

Looks like a direct response to Rashid and Shoaib's comments on PTV about the on field team discussions we saw during the match and how they feel the senior members (Hafeez and Malik) took over the captaincy role from Babar practically.

Yep what happens in the dressing room, stays in the dressing room.

Easy to say this, but the reality is different.

7 or 8 different people in your ear, a coach with his head in his hands. Not the best environment really.

These things show a lack of leadership qualities and personality. Some people have it and others don't. Alpha males keep people at bay and do their own thing and send the message out that unsolicited advice will not be welcome.

Why does advice and guidance happen in the middle of the series? What do they do before that?

Agreed. Babar isn't an alpha male whatsoever. There's a reason why he insisted for Malik and Hafeez to be in his XI.

To many experienced players it wont help babar he will continue to listen to seniors aslong as they are thier

Too many cooks can spoil the meal.

Babar should make his own decisions. That's right.

Babar can't even make a single decision on TV by himself, its deluded to think he has the power to select players as they guy struggled to even make one decision on the field himself.

Leadership and strategies are both different things. What we need are good strategies from Babar, i dont care if he is a good leader or not. Employ the strategies and that would be enough

Guys like Imad and Rizwan will try to act as wanabe captains to come on tv and attract PCB. In next match we might find the water boy also giving advice

His decision does get respected. Usman Qadir is his friend and he got him selected for australia tour

That's it? That's nothing. The boy is struggling to get a bowling change approved, never mind going against the Malik and Hafeez mafia.

I don't think Babar comes across as an Alpha Male or whatever you want to call it.

He's a nice guy, maybe too nice.

Come on, man! You really expect that? :)))

YK has no business advising Babar even if he asked a direct question. He's a batting coach and should strictly be advising players in that domain. But as I said, that's too much to ask, especially of Younis

The more I hear Babar speak, the more I feel disappointed in him. He comes across as very meek and submissive. His post match interview with the Sky team was so unflattering. Same run of the mill responses, lack of expression and just agreeing to whatever was said to him by the interviewer.

Babar needs A LOT of grooming! One would think that after establishing himself as one of the top players in the world, he'd get a sense of confidence, but it really doesn't show.

Babar is simply not meant to be a captain. He is a very timid personality with no spine whatsoever. He also lacks game awareness on the field.

Pakistan should seriously be thinking about changing captains. This whole Babar experiment with captaincy is going to have dire results and I'm worried this will cause an unwanted negative effect on his batting.

Hope he can improve his captaincy and keep up the brilliant batting. Finally a captian who can lead from the front.

Looks like things are about to explode in the dressing room.

YK is indirectly criticizing Malik, Hafeez and Misbah for interfering a bit too much in Babar's case.

No I don't think he was saying that. What he was saying was that Babar needs to stand by his decisions.

Indeed ... and Younis is the right man for this job. Need some stern voice to back Babar and ask other idiots to shut up. Man up and say folks your chances as captain are over, now listen what your captain says if you cannot just get lost forever. Enough of ur advice and drama

Thank u Younis , your are one of those groomed by Woolmer for captaincy.

Just back your captain , he is the right choice now to lead in all formats. Let him play more games and he will get through this... it is not like he cannot do, he has just started and by time , he will learn more. And improve a lot.

Funny that sounds totally opposite to Kohli. Who looks like a cheetah when he’s in front of press.

I don't mind him getting some help but nearly every decision and there was a meeting for that decision. He should make his own decisions, when the game is tight and a close finish than he can ask for some support.

Bowling Iftikhar over Shadab was the wrong decision and it was pretty obvious Shadab needed to be bowling.

Firstly he should never been made captain with seniors in the team The likes of malik and hafeez shouldnt be there because its easy to turn to them when the heat is on Unfortunately thats another wrong decision hes made

2ndly in futurse there should be no round table meetings on the pitch Send everyone that gathers in no uncertain termz back to their positions inc seniors like malik or hafeez He needs to man up on the pitch

The only people that should be having a chat with babar is the bowler Full stop

Doesn’t need any advice from Younis in terms of managing the team. He lost the dressing room within a year in spite of winning a WT20.

Babar doesn’t need to be an arrogant dictator but he needs to have more presence. He is Pakistan’s star player and that should count for something even if the bar is extremely low.

His attitude does not reflect his standing within the team.

Manchester: Younis Khan is satisfied with batsmen performance in the Test series against England and he is looking forward to working with this bunch in the future.

Khan’s short-term period as national team’s batting coach will end after the third T20I tomorrow. Meanwhile, he indicated towards continuing his job in the future while talking to the reporters via teleconference.

“I enjoyed working with batters during this tour and many things I learnt from them and tried to deliver my experience to them. If any opportunity comes to me to continue my job, I will love to do it,” said Younis who was appointed just for England tour comprised of three Tests and as many T20Is.

Former Test cricketer said his prime target was to make good friendships with players to better understand them. “From guiding Mohammad Hafeez on his golf swing to mending Yasir Shah’s hairstyle, I have tried to come as much closer to the players as I can to undestand them properly. I have worked with these players like they are my children and this is what I had learned in past two years,” he said.

Talking about losing Test series, Khan said few session cost them first Test upon which they looked afterwards and tried to overcome weaknesses.

“We played really well in first Test, unfortunately, last few sessions slipped from our hands and we lost that match. I hope players have learned from this exprience,” he maintained.

Khan backed Azhar as captain and expressed confident in him as a batter after he gained his form back with a knock of 142*. “See, for me he has done well in the series. He was under pressure due to his performance but I think that one inning gave him immense confidence,” he said.

“Similar case is of Asad who it really difficult to gain his form back. But I am pretty sure, a single good inning will put him back on track,” he continued.

Adding on, Khan praised Mohammad Rizwan who was named man-of-the-Test-Series for scoring 161 runs and taking 6 catches behind the stumps. “I was very happy for him [Rizwan]. He proved himself and you know whenever a youngster performs, it gives you a special feeling,” he said.

Looking forward to last T20I of the tour, Khan is confident to end the series on a winning note. “I hope we win the last match and finish this tour on a high note. I am confident that our players will bounce back,” he concluded.

What is the way management makes sure Babar will make his own decisions? Brings the previous captain back into the team :facepalm

The panic panel today will consist of Babar, Hafeez, Malik, Sarfaraz and Wahab. This is going to be fun...

Babar doing ok today but Sarfaraz very vocal behind stumps. I am fine with that as long as they dont surround him all the time.

Needs to stand up to the seniors and do his homework.

Looks lost at times when Plan A doesn’t work.

We don't have a clue what real leadership is, I mean look at Kane Williamson nice mannered young man that's totally Babar azam. A leader is who leads from the front be the best man and that alone is the best quality of Babar azam. We don't need Afridi or shoib akhtar kinda guy as our captain all talks and no end product, what we need a guy who can take responsibility and what I have seen Babar is doing fine (7 matches 4 fifties) what else you want a kidney, leave the guy alone for God sake
