Yet another star in the universe of talented Pakistani left arm pace bowlers, Mir Hamza has been making headlines in recent times due to performances in the country's premier long format tournament, the Quaid-e-Azam trophy (GOLD). Playing for Karachi Dolphins, the 22 year old picked up 58 wickets in 11 matches at an average of under 18, with 6 five wicket hauls and 1 ten wicket haul to his name.

His ability to swing the ball both ways and the penchant to bowl with good pace and aggression has earned him plaudits by observers and experts as recently as in the series against Kenya but his talent has been on display since the time he was picked for Karachi Under 19s where he was the leading wicket-taker. He was then picked for Pakistan Under 19s to represent the country in the 2012 World Cup in Australia. He has since made his way to First Class cricket where he has represented Karachi Whites and Karachi Dolphins and featured prominently in the recently concluded Pakistan A series against Kenya.

In an exclusive interview with PakPassion.net, Hamza spoke on a number of topics including how he was inspired by the legendary Wasim Akram, recent improvements in his own bowling, his outstanding performance in the Quaid-e-Azam trophy and the unique qualities he can bring to bear if asked to represent the Pakistan team.

PakPassion.net : How did you get into cricket?

Mir Hamza : In life we all have our heroes and inspirations. My hero has always been Wasim Akram, he’s the man who inspired me and the man who made we want to firstly watch cricket then play the game.

PakPassion.net : What inspired you about Wasim Akram?

Mir Hamza : He was a world class cricketer, a cricketer who will always be remembered as an all-time great and someone who has inspired many youngsters across Pakistan to take up the sport of cricket. From a personal perspective, well he’s a left-arm pace bowler like me and that really made me like his style of bowling. Not only is a he legendary cricketer but his personality is tremendous also.

PakPassion.net : The competition in Karachi for places at the best cricket clubs, academies and First Class teams is intense. How did you get noticed amongst the thousands and thousands who hope for a career in cricket?

Mir Hamza : After finishing my studies I joined the UBL Academy in Karachi. That’s where my cricket career progressed and I came under the scanner of coaches in Karachi and started to get noticed by various high profile figures in the Karachi cricket circuit. I worked with coaches like Masood Anwar and Azam Khan who really assessed my game and looked at the strengths and weaknesses and really helped me mature and improve.

At that age, the competition for places was daunting, but it actually inspired me and made me want to work even harder and want to make a name for myself in cricket. I started to go to the UBL Academy on a regular basis and that gave me a very good grounding in my cricket.

PakPassion.net : So after joining the UBL academy, how did your career progress?

Mir Hamza : I saw the professionalism at the academy and that made me hungry for success. My thoughts turned to wanting to represent Karachi and then Pakistan. I knew it was a distant dream and one where there would be many hurdles but one that I felt I could achieve.

Whilst at the UBL Academy I was picked for Karachi Under 19s where I was the leading wicket-taker and then I was picked for Pakistan Under 19s in 2012. From then I was picked for the Karachi First Class team and have continued to make steady progress culminating in a very good Quaid-e-Azam tournament for me recently.

PakPassion.net : You’ve taken 58 wickets recently in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy Gold tournament at an average of 17.43, which is quite a performance. What do you put that remarkable effort down to?

Mir Hamza : In Pakistan there is so much competition for places. To get noticed you have to be special and I always promised myself that if I played cricket professionally there would be no half measures and I would do my utmost to play at the highest level and for my country one day. I said to myself that you don’t get noticed by taking thirty or so wickets in a First Class tournament, you have to do more than that and you have to be amongst the highest wicket-takers not amongst the also-rans.

Last season when I played regional cricket I took 45 wickets in seven matches which was really pleasing. This season was a continuation of the efforts of last season and I’m glad I’ve had a good Quaid-e-Azam Trophy. I worked on my fitness and on a few technical amendments and it’s worked out well.

PakPassion.net : At the age of 22 you are obviously still learning the game but already you are showing tremendous signs of improvement?

Mir Hamza : Yes it’s very heartening. Both physically and in terms of skills I am maturing as a cricketer. I’m feeling in good shape and as a cricketer you are always developing and learning and if you ever feel that you are the complete cricketer, you can come back to earth with a bump. I’m learning more about diet, more about myself as a cricketer and developing my skills. Things are coming together nicely but there’s a long road ahead.

PakPassion.net : Having spoken with a number of first-class cricketers about you, they’ve all said that you are one of the very few young left-arm pace bowlers in Pakistan who can swing the ball both ways. Is that accurate?

Mir Hamza : It’s good to know that my fellow professionals are speaking highly of me and there is no bigger praise than getting respect from people in the game and who know the game of cricket. I’ve also read comments on PakPassion about my bowling and it was really encouraging to read positive comments from knowledgeable fans, so I thank those fans on PakPassion who have been writing good things about me. It’s great that a site like PakPassion talks about and interviews cricketers in Pakistan that aren’t that well known instead of just focussing on the big names.

When I started bowling, my natural delivery was the inswinger to the right hander. I never had any problems with that delivery, it just came to me from a very early age and I developed that delivery further in my under 19 days. However my coaches told me that at Under 19 level having just the inswinger could work but if I really wanted to make a mark at a higher level particularly in international cricket then I would need to bowl quicker and be able to bowl the one that moves away from the right hander too.

So in the last two years I’ve been working very hard on my outswinger. At first it was a bit of a struggle but gradually as time went by and with more practice the outswinger is now part of my repertoire. These days the outswinger actually feels like the more natural delivery which is very pleasing.

PakPassion.net : Pakistan has always been well represented by genuine out and out pace bowlers. What have you been measured at on the speed gun?

Mir Hamza : I honestly don’t know because I don’t think I’ve ever bowled where there has been a speed gun present. I’m well aware that in international cricket you need to have some pace behind you to succeed so I’m working on getting up to the 140kph mark. I think I’m in the mid to high 130s but until my speed is measured I won’t know for definite. I’m working on some adjustments so hopefully we’ll get up to the 140kph mark soon.

PakPassion.net : You were selected for the last two matches for Pakistan A against Kenya. How was that experience?

Mir Hamza : It was a proud moment to be selected and playing alongside experienced international players like Saeed Ajmal and Fawad Alam. There were a number of players who have played for Pakistan in the Pakistan A side so it was good to be in that environment and around those players. The likes of Saeed Ajmal and Fawad Alam were very supportive and offered great advice to me.

I’d set myself the goal of playing for Pakistan A this season if there were any matches coming up and to have achieved that goal and played two matches and taken some wickets was very encouraging and a step up the ladder towards international cricket.

PakPassion.net : The next domestic tournament is the Pentangular Cup. What are your aims and targets in that tournament?

Mir Hamza : I want to continue the good form that I’ve been in this season so far, so this tournament cannot come quick enough for me. I’m looking forward to it and I want to be the leading wicket-taker in this tournament after being the second highest wicket taker in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy.

PakPassion.net : People will say that you are another left arm pace bowler, something that the Pakistan team has an abundance of. Do you think you can offer Pakistan something different to what they already have?

Mir Hamza : I think I can. Pakistan cricket is blessed with several world class left arm pace bowlers like Junaid Khan, Mohammad Irfan and Wahab Riaz and it won’t be easy to replace any of those bowlers. My dream has always been to play for Pakistan and not be amongst the many cricketers who never see international cricket. It would be an honour to play alongside the likes of these fast bowlers I’ve mentioned but I think I can hold my own in international cricket whenever the chance comes.

This season has been a breakthrough season for me and my progress has been heartening, but the next step is international cricket and I feel that if the chance comes I will not let anyone down.

If he is effective with this speed he doesn't need to up his speed with adjustments. He might lose his potency like that.

In Pakistan there is so much competition for places. To get noticed you have to be special

The fastest bowler of all time talha is indeed very special at lying!

On topic, he deserves a chance at the WC and he can be our surprise package, plus I would take him over Wahab.

If Ehsan is not available, then this guy is the next best option, along with Sadaf Hussain.

is always exciting to see a young talent coming through, especially a quick bowler.

from the videos he has uploaded on his Facebook profile he does look quite exceptional, wish him all the best.

Talks in a mature way.

BTW I feel there is no need to adjust any further at this age of 22. This can lead to decrease in potency.
Adjustments should he done by the age of 19-20

I like the honesty he showed in the interview.

Certainly post wc he should get a look in

From what I see based on footage I don't think he will learn more untill he is tested, and I doubt he will be tested where he is now

I like the look of this guy. Not only is his natural ball the inswinger to the right hander, a delivery too many of our current Left armers lack, but he has added the one which goes the other way as well. Just something about his general aggression which looks right for a pace bowler.

So I take it that most of the interviews are in Urdu(?).
If a player is more comfortable in a regional language than PP will take that interview in the regional language. For example I remember Taufeeq Umar gave an interview to PP in Punjabi.
Not sure what is Mir Hamza's mother tongue. My guess is Balochi but I could be totally wrong.

if Hamza reads Pakpassion i would like him to know that he needs to practice with the kookaburra ball which is harder to swing and reverse swing. if you can swing that you can swing anything. late swing at decent pace is the best weapon you can have.

Indeed. Really hope he is able to get some practice with the Kookaburra ball. Also hope that he can reach his goal of reaching and exceeding the 140kph mark whilst maintaining his skills in moving the ball. May Allah bless him and help him. As he said, its a long road ahead, so he must get his head down and work hard. Mohammad Aamir will be back soon too, so that will make competition even tougher Insha Allah. Therfore, it is of the utmost importance that Mir really works hard on his game is he is to be a mainstay in the Pakistani Team.

Good read boy. I think, I noticed Hamza few years back when he was the best bowler in some Inter Region/Dept U19 tournament.

If any thing, people around him should forbid him ever to look the speed gun - it's spoiling PAK cricket. Try to get control of new ball & bowl as fast as you can, anything around 134 is good enough if one can move the ball late, both ways & make batsmen play at that 5 times out of 6.

Yes as I wrote, the preferred language of the player.

With Mir it was Urdu.

Looks promising. I hope he drafted in sooner than later. Him playing for Karachi may make it easier than, for example, Sadaf Hussain with PCB slightly shifting towards Karachi after Najam Sethi takeover

+1

No need to fix anything. He is taking wickets with current pace and with time it will increase.

One word of advise though, stay away from anyone who would try to modify your action. We have seen what change of action had done to many naturally talented players in past.

Good bowler, PakPassion (if they haven't already) should have supplied him with Kookaburra balls, I would be more than happy to donate money for equipment for up-and-coming talented cricketers. Perhaps it could be something that is incorporated where we are able to donate through PayPal perhaps?

From the first video looks very good. Generate this kind of swing on flat Pakistani pitches that too both ways. With age at his side, he should really be drafted in the national team for tests at least. I hope he doesnt become one of those talents who is wasted in the domestics by PCB

Pakistani pitches aren't flat anymore, they are underprepared, thus aiding slow swing bowlers. In order to truly judge his ability he needs to play for Pakistan or Pakistan A abroad (hopefully telecasted).

Hamza, you're one of those fast bowlers who I'm excited about.

Because apparently we've seen you swing the ball both ways.
It excites us, because no one in PAK team currently can do this.

But keep in mind, it remains to be seen how well you can do it with the Kookaburra ball.

We saw Usman Shinwari swing the ball MILES in domestic, but he couldn't move an inch in international matches. Also, moving the ball late is the key, as even Tanvir swings it but gets smashed because he can't move it late like Asif or Amir.

Be hopeful to play for Pakistan, but test your skills and make sure they're what it takes to be a success at international level.

It's always great seeing new talent coming through.

Hamza seems to be a great talent, and I just hope he can make the Kookaburra sing.

those vids look impressive but Like i said before you've got to swing that useless kookaburra ball we are lumped with. God I hate that thing!! Mir sahib get a kookaburra from somewhere and start practicing!!

Why not go the other way.

Why do we have to use Kookaburra in UAE? Its our home, we should pick balls.

We should use the balls we use in PAK domestic.

I don't think our batsmen would survive with that ball vs international class bowler :yk

It's better using the Kookaburra for our internationals because it's quite widely used. If we use the Grays ball for our internationals, we'll end up even worse when we tour other countries that use the Kookaburra.

So he might be not as good as we think he is. Kookaburra ball will decide his future.

we play with Kookaburra ball and it swing more than dukes ca or mb balls.

And looking at his vidoes yes he can swing but looks like he is bowling slower than 130km/h . There is no aggression what we love to see in our fast bowlers.

From what I can see from Mir videos he has posted on his Facebook page, he looks decent with a good clean action. Foremost he can swing the ball both way at decent pace. Next year I certainly see Hamza thrusting himself in Pakistan side. Hopefully he continues to impress the selector, gets a decent opportunity to prove his abilities.

The guy shows good fast bowler attitude, and a bit of aggression too. I guess you didn't see the videos properly.

Agree with you on the pace though, it's on the slower side but then again, one cannot judge for certain unless tested with a speed gun.

What are the odds that him and Sadaf Hussain will make their debuts on the tour of England?

He's a poor mans Sadaf Hussain. Will move the ball as much as Junaid Khan does in international cricket :)

I hope he is selected in WC after Ajmal is withdrawn he can make it to squad according to ICC rules

Wish him all the best.

He's done well recently in domestic cricket and whilst competition in the fast bowling department is tough, if the selectors look to the future then this lad wont be far away.

Didnt have a very good pentagular tournament. He has the ability but be needs some luck as well.

No way this guy is a 120KPH trundler as some are saying. He is sharp enough in those videos from what I can see...

He is only 22-23, so in time, as long as he continues learning and striving hard (which he has to do to compete with Amir, Rahat, Wahab etc.)...he will definitely gain more pace since most fast bowlers (barring most Indian bowlers) mature around 28-30 years of age. By the time he turns 28-29, he would be at his peak and will def be bowling 10-15 KMH faster (on average)!

What is very important is how he works hard and how PCB manages him...

He is not that good.

Based on what, he is swinging the ball both ways and is yet to play int'l cricket and just took 4 wickets against England in a side game, all top batsmen as well...you have to provide a reason why you think so?

failed in previous Pakistan A games foreign tour

^^^If we go by that logic, one failure or two and then dumped...we will soon be out of cricketers in Pakistan!

You do realise that A team games and foreign tours are more about learning and getting experience playing in other conditions...winning or succeeding is a bit secondary?

actually he was one of the highest wicket taker along with immad in the a tournament with srilanka, not sure though, you check.

The British cricket reporter from the Times described his left arm swing bowling as impressive.
If it was Kooko ball then I will be impressed too. That mean he has worked hard to get his swing working with Kooko ball as his swing was not working before with Kooko ball.

pretty sure it was a kookabura, because if it wasn't England would have caused a massive fuss

I hope Mir finds a backer in some influential person, otherwise he will be left to rot in our domestic system.

Should be included in the Test Squad vs England this summer. There are only a few genuine swing bowlers left in Pakistan and he is one of them.

Has decent pace as well.

11/104 in his first Quaid-e-Azam trophy game of the season after returning from Pakistan A's tour of Zimbabwe.

Brilliant performance.

Looking at the scorecards though you was under what kind of pitches are prepared for the domestic season.

Wholehearted cricketer and someone who I believe is not far away from the Pakistan senior team.

Sohail Khan's place could be under threat.....

Hmmm. The guy who just took two 5fers should be worried? Aren't there weaker candidates?

Either Mir or Junaid have to be on that plane to Australia. These Rahats, Imrans and Wahabs are utterly useless.

If we are waiting for a new Wasim Akram just to show up from somewhere, good luck with that. Short of that, just use the best you have available and Hamza is certainly the one among the new ones, deserve a call up to the national team.

Keeps knocking on the door of selection. Only a matter of time surely before he is called up.

I'm not fully sure but I believe he bowls around 135-140

If that's true then good for us. But I highly doubt it. Have seen him play in some televised domestic games and he seems like a high 120s low 130s bowler.

He was very disappointing when he played a bit in PsL

I know t20 is a totally different ball game but unlike batsmen suited to different formats I think bowlers should still be able to show some baseline level of good ability regardless of format especially when majority of batsmen you are bowling to are still essentially domestic hacks. Ofcourse malik used him terribly too

The good record we see of his is mostly on helpful domestic pitches and recent A tour to England. I would keep my expectations low

It's criminals on part of PCB selection committee to ignore these deserving players they've destroyed so many careers with their infighting, petty politics and personal grudges.

No that is incorrect.

Different formats require different skills, unless you have mastered all the skills you can't be brilliant in all formats, for example, Dale Steyn's effectiveness in Tests (consistent outswing) is his weakness in LOIs where he is too one dimensional and as such isn't good in those formats.

Should play. One of the few who has any idea on how to use the new ball. Saw it in England as well.

Could slot in for any of the pacers we are carring atm really.
