Is Shinwari the first player from Waziristan region to make it this far?

Damn did he not only swing it but swung it more then Amir has.

Great bowling by him today. Hope he can carry on from here, would be great if he turns out to be one of the strike bowlers we were looking for.

Is this a sly dig at Mohammad Amir? Who doesn't have a 5'fer in ODIs :P

Which dismissals were due to seam and which were swing? Some posters saying one or the other and I didn't get to watch the actual spell.

A combination of both wasn't just down to swing or seam solely. Swung it in the air, then seamed it off the pitch to hit timber.

His bowling was thousand times better. Think Mohammad Amir's relatives should ask him to bowl as well as Shinwari did.

no its not - he said that his relatives said you are replacing a big bowler like Mohammad Amir so we hope you will bowl like him too

Why cant we be happy with having both Amir and Shinwari?

Brilliant performance today by Shinwari. Ripped the Lankans to shreds. Yes it was vs Sri Lanka, but you have to be special on the day to reduce an international team to 20-5 in this day and age.

Whole Landi Kotal is in celebration, says Shinwari’s father on son's brilliant spell

PESHAWAR: It was the Tatara ground, a rough and jagged terrain surrounded by treacherous hills in Landikotal, where Usman Khan Shinwari, hero for Pakistan in the fifth ODI against Sri Lanka in Sharjah, was able to hone his skills on the cricket pitch.

Usman’s talent and passion for the game took him from Landikotal to the national team where his fiery spell on Monday earned him his first five-for, and that too a match-winning one, in just the second ODI of his career.

The feat brought a smile on the faces of not only the people of Pakistan, but also for his tribal people who have continued playing cricket in difficult situations, without any facilities or a proper sports ground.

“Not only the family but the whole Landi Kotal is celebrating Usman’s brilliant bowling performance against Sri Lanka,” said his father Asmat Khan Shinwari while talking with The Express Tribune, adding that the people are praying for more success for Usman and are hoping that he will bring laurels for the country.

“We have been playing cricket in a very difficult situation in Landi Kotal where there are no facilities for sportsmen,” Asmat lamented.

Asmat, 50 years old, who is himself a cricket enthusiast and still practices with his sons, revealed the playing condition of the ground where Usman grew up playing cricket. “Usman started his cricket career from Tatara ground of Landi Kotal which is not a proper cricket ground and constitutes of a rough and jagged terrain surrounded by treacherous Tatara hills,” he said.

Landi Kotal is a Tehsil of Khyber Agency where the local people have made a ground for themselves 20 years back and named it after the Tatara mountains. At this ground, Asmat told, young aspiring sportsmen have played cricket and football, and that too during the most turbulent times when militancy hit the whole Khyber Agency.

Shinwari belongs to Ghani Khel and represented his village in cricket tournaments which are organized every year among different villages of the agency.

Asmat added that he brought Usman to Islamia Cricket Academy run by former Pakistan national team Player Arshad Khan at the historical Islamia College, Peshawar to further horn his skills.

“He is enthusiastic about cricket like other youngsters of his area,” Asmat told media persons, who swarmed his house in Hayatabad, after Usman’s record performance.

“The whole family is happy that his efforts have finally paid off,” said Asmat. “Unlike other parents, we always supported him to play cricket.”

Usman’s father added that his other son Ibrahim Shinwari has passed the U16 trials and hopes to play for the national team in the future.

“There is a huge deficiency of sporting facilities in Landi Kotal,” rued Asmat. “So far no government has supported the youth in this part of the world. We have, in these mountains, talented sportsmen who should represent the country and possess the ability to bring accolades for Pakistan.”

The first and last were of seam. The rest were swinging across away from right handers and in to left handers.

There you go. Usman is lucky to have such supportive parents.

Nice to read about a, to me unknown place, called Landi Kotal.

Still believe Junaid is a quality bowler and should not be discarded, only thing now is that we now have a proper bench so we can rotate between bowlers efficiently. Each and every bowler is good enough to make it to the starting XI. Only thing now is that we need one more quality spin bowler other than Shadab so our bowling attack is complete.

Raza Hasan is needed and then we can say our spin attack > India's :babar

Raza hassan says hello..
He will soon replace imad and our spin attack will be great.

Shadab
Raza
Harris
Malik

The thing that shocked me the most is that he did all of this on a flat track.

Riaz afridi is from FATA . And shahid afridi and also from same area but ye spent his life in karachi.

Yeah Raza was a good spinner in the 2012 T20 WC.

Only problem is that Arthur wants our bowlers to contribute with the bat, Imad can hold a bat whereas Raza can't. I remember when Raza looked flat in an ODI against Aus in the UAE.

I'm sure raza can handle a bit- as well as hasan though not as powerful

I did not expect anything like that from Azhar Mahmood. But he proved me wrong. He showed us "You don't need to be a great player or have great talent to be a successful coach". Well done boss!!!!!!!

There must be something about him and the way he goes about things that he is able to get the best out of the boys, that they love working with him and the execute everything they have practiced in training perfectly out in the middle.

Leads to questions as to why did our legendary Waqar Younis fail to get similar results?

May be Waqar has big ego!!!!!

Waqar has historically poor PR skills and was not a very tactically astute player even in his pomp. His record as captain is terrible and his leadership skills in the locker room are not noteworthy.

He has a big outswinger, which he got Chandimal with.

Three wickets where he hit timber or pads were mostly seam movement.

Did he play under Wiki? I'm not so sure of that.

Last time I saw him was a t20 game vs Srilanka where Kusal Perrera took him apart. At that time Dav Whatmore was coach with Mohammad Akram if I'm not wrong

This is the funniest interview I've heard in the longest time. :)) :))) :)))

Easily my most favorite player in the team.

Asia Cup disaster means he gets another chance! Ok format was not the same but what has he changed in the meantime?

I'm just happy Junaid will be on the bench. hahahahaha so happy. :)) :)) :)) :misbah

Hahahhaa. Shinwnari is bad, but yeah, Junaid is even worse. Glad he's asked to sit out in the Tests as well. Clearly nobody rates him except Syed1

Trying to bump old threads and get back at me after I demolished you in the last two days?

Try again child

Not sure why did his relatives ask him to bowl like Wahab Riaz in the Asia Cup. :inti

Sharma ji and Dhawan are too good on these conditiona. There was nothing Shinwari could hv done differently. We are talking about very high class batting rather than poor bowling.

Forgot about Shinwari. So many Pak bowlers these days appear out of no where and seem to disappear even more quicker.

Just last year, Hasan Ali looked like another GOAT bowler. Now he is not even in the Test team. Same with Amir, Raees, Rahat etc. Abbas seems to be new flavor and he looks like another GOAT.

There was a time when Pak produced a great talent, they used to rule the bowling for many years. These days, its just for a few months and then disappear.

Demolished? :najam Haha.

Just glad Junaid had to sit out and we didn't see more of his mediocrity.
