"My words were not directed towards anyone in particular" : Sarfaraz Ahmed apologises

While Sarfraz's behaviour was shameful to say the least, I find it funny how Pakistan fans/media are making way more noise compared to the South African contingent.

Holier than thou attitude.... these same people refer to their short or fat friends as chotay or motay and in Pakistani context the word Sarf said also falls under that category. However, it shouldn't have been said specially when you are representing your country. A slap on the wrists is warranted. Funny that them same "angels" do not have a problem when Kohli curses his mouth off. What Sarf said is nowhere close to what Kohli spews on a daily basis.

You have to chose your words carefully while dealing with different society. Cursing a black person with F word will be less offensive than softly saying the N word. Kohli generally curses (the former) but he knows where to draw the line.

When you go for the latter, you aren't addressing just that person but a community.

Desis use those words. But when you are in international forum, you'll have to remember the cultural differences.

You can always rely on the PCB to mess situations up.

These tweets from Sarfaraz make him look stupid and more concerned about being caught. The PCB should have just added a short apology from the player in the apology email the Board sent.

To be fair I don’t think even sarfaraz has read his own tweets. He doesn’t manage his account, if you see his timeline, there’s RTs during the time of the match.

And why would he call himself black?

Why would he talk about his own mother?

If he was talking to himself why was he facing towards Phehlukwayo and screaming like a dick across the pitch?

He was talking to himself about the player out of frustration. Not talking about himself.

Big K4L4 wrestler

Looks a bit of a wimp but even if he wasn't I wouldn't abuse anyone in a racist manner. Not sure what point you're making here.

Should have posted a video message, instead of having his social media team come up with some rubbish on his behalf.

A very weak apology, but not surprising. Our captain continues to show how he is clearly not the sharpest tool in the shed.

The wording seems to be the sort of drivel the PCB come up with actually.

Weak tweets.

Should have just said it was never meant to hurt anyone or any sort of racism otherwise why would i speak in Urdu and gets unnoticed by the player.

I think he felt the pressure and tweeted (or asked someone to tweet) this weak apology.

Very lame response. He should have directly apologized to Phelukwayo. It seems he was more concerned about the stump mic catching his words then any real regret about what he said.

Sarfraz was pathetic to use such words especially the position and situation he was in but worst are those who call WI team as "Kaali Aandhi" (Black Windflaw) and westerners as Gooras (Whites) in their daily conversation and now behaving as holy cows. Lol! Ay munafiqat bas teri he aasraa hai.

Must appreciate bro - at least you showed up. There could be difference in opinion, but guts to fight a lost battle must be saluted.

I supported him against hate he was getting on this forum by some posters for all the wrong reasons making stuff up like he is not a good player or does not contribute, without identifying the reason for it like captaining and keeping in three format. If you been reading my posts you should know that I have been consistent in wanting him removed from Tests as captain. Of course if he has been saying something stupid I would not support him for that but lol at those who are being all moralistic about this, as I said in other threads players from other countries are probably calling players from sub continent all kind of names under the sun. Sarfraz was stupid to not remember that Mic was nearby.

Come on bhai, this has nothing to do with Kohli. Leave him out of the discussion.

Our club level captain has embarrassed himself yet again and really the curtain should be drawn on the career of Pakistan's worst captain.

PCB did the right thing, no need to make a mountain out of a mole hill like Cricket Australia

So he is calling everyone kaala? Who came up with these tweets?

What would you have liked him to have said?

Nothing.

The PCB release was enough. They could have just added a very short apology from Sarfaraz, of a few words.

Instead the tweets have made the situation worse.

Fair point.

Im sure he feels really upset by this. You've prob met him and the people I know who have said he's a real nice person and this out of character.

He is a nice guy and very friendly, but he's still at fault over this and I feel that by tweeting what he did today has made things worse,

Now this can be interpreted in many different ways. “Sorry but not sorry” is one of them.

I’m not questioning his intentions at all but the whole issue has been managed very poorly. I’m sure these tweets were typed in by someone who is supposed to be educated and knowledgeable.

It is interesting to see the classicists and racists who are coming out in droves to condemn Sarfraz on different social media platforms. If you don't like him as a player then criticize him for it. Don't convolute his poor batting form with his crass comments. Its disgusting to see ppl mocking his speech pattern as opposed to the content of his remarks. They are ethnically stereotyping Sarfraz and calling him out for belonging to the lower middle class and for not being 'educated' enough. That's just pathetic.

Well, these people will finally get what they have wanted for more than a year now. Let's see how Pakistan become world beaters under a new captain now.

I wonder how Qasim Umar Pakistan first black cricketer would feel about this matter and also how Sarfraz has responded to this issue

Except that no one has ever claimed that. The sensationalism of the defenders of Sarfraz's captaincy/performance is funny.

Pakistan will not become a world beater if he is replaced, Rizwan is no Gilchrist etc. etc.

Yes everyone knows that. This poor team will not become a top team with a new captain, and Rizwan is not going to perform like Buttler or Bairstow, but just because we are a poor team and not exactly blessed with WK options doesn't mean that Sarfraz should get a free run.

The team is getting thumped frequently and his individual performance has been very poor. He has no business leading the team.

If we are to lose, why not with a captain who is at least pulling his own weight in terms of individual performance?

I think there are plenty of that type in PCB currently.

Unfortunately supposed to be, are the key words here.

There should be an inquiry into who wrote this pathetic apology. Clearly if it was some professional PR person then they should be fired. If it was Sarfraz then he needs to clarify what he means by unfortunately caught by the stump mic? This should not happen when Pakistan is trying to improve its image when rest of the cricket world has turned its back on it. Think about how much pressure there will be in Ab De Villers to not visit Pakistan because of this episode. This type of behavior is inexcusible from an individual like Sarfraz who is not liked by many in his own team.

I feel a lot of our jokes are kind of racists. Like calling a black person black...or jokes about Pathan or Sikh people being stupid..

The wording is not Sarfaraz's.

It's likely that it has come from some pen-pusher at the PCB who thought it would be a good idea to tweet the rubbish they have.

I feel a bit sorry for Sarfaraz regarding the tweets as he probably doesn't fully understand what has actually been written for him.

This guy has not learnt anything. Can someone please post a screenshot from his twitter likes the first one to be specific.

I am sure Sarfaraz did not man any offence. He seems rather ignorant of racism and things like that.

Let's see who this captain is, who will pull his own weight in terms of individual performance.

I'm not saying keeping Sarfraz was making a difference (because we won/lost inspite of him tbh), but let's see the other side of the story now. Will be fun to watch, how Sarfraz bashers run around trying to find every excuse under the sun to justify the new captain's performance.

If Sarfraz gets banned for a few matches here, I don't see him captaining Pakistan at the World Cup.

Unless I'm missing something, what Sarfraz said was overtly racist.

Can someone explain why it wasn't?

He’s using the same excuse luis suarez did
Actually I take that back , he’s not even doing that

He’s saying he was speaking to himself which is weird , who swears at themselves and their mums and that too in the same sentence

Those people are not captaining test sides and visiting a country ravaged by racism. On this very site derogatory words used against Muslims are banned (rightly so). But when your lt captain utters a word which is clearly associated as racist ( he may not have meant it) you are supporting him? Minimum Sarfarz should be doing is to tender a genuine apology

One of the most pathetic generic replies one can come up with, seems to be penned by some 12 year old.

That is what he has done, apologized.

who knows behind the door how much PCB had to beg for.

I feel for Sarfraz. Guy was certainly not being racist. These comments show an insensitivity to race issues more than anything. I personally think idiots like Sarfraz and Pandya need programs like race and gender sensitisation more than anything else. However, the inertness and the stupidity of the PCB is baffling. Just ban him for the rest of the series(ODI's and T20's) and sack him from captaincy for good. This is a golden chance to accrue goodwill with CSA, ICC with no real damage being done to Pakistan cricket. Meanwhile Sarfraz can be given a break and Rizwan given a chance to show what he's worth and you can test a new captain as well. Win-win for everyone including the fans. Instead these tweets make it look worse than it is. Of course he was talking about Andile when there were only 10 other brown players and Rassie on the whole ground. Who else could it possibly be? Pakistan Circus Board indeed!

Ignorance really from him.

May have got away with it in a street match, but not in most other forms of the game.

With this ’apology’, it’s from the frying pan now straight into the fire

Yes, digging and the hole just gets bigger and bigger.

Someone at PCB really needs to realise how stupid this apology looks, which they've written for Sarfaraz.

To much is being made off this. People say a lot worse in every day life for goodness sake. Forgive and forget.
