When Pakistan was getting beaten black and blue in the world cup, at the same time the much vaunted Shaheens were also getting their backsides handed out to them. All the above mentioned names like Maaz, Arafat, Shamyl, Sufyan, Akif, etc. are part of the Shaheens and they were losing to England B without even much of a fight.
The personnel in the main team aren't that bad (they are average), it is just that their roles are wrong.
Babar cannot bat at 4. He either has to open or not be in the team.
Nawaz is not a number 7 or 8. He needs to be in the top 5.
Shadab cannot bowl 4 overs anymore. No matter which way you look, he has the best strike rate in Pak so he needs to bat more.
Saim cannot open. He's a decent player but T20 opening is not something he has gotten settled in. He's a decent bowler if a team has many left handers.
Fahim needs to open & close the innings if he's playing. Otherwise try someone like Abbas Afridi, etc.
Same with Fakhar. He's not a number 5.
The team is like a lego set; all the parts are there but the way they are being assembled is just not right so the final product isn't what it can be. Give them better roles and readjust them a bit and they will be fine.
Pakistan has to find a formula in which they believe. For me it's in the spin bowling where we have multiple options. Abrar & Tariq are pretty decent and can bowl 8 reliable (most times) overs. Shadab, Nawaz, Saim, & Agha can chip in for another 8 and bulk of the bowling is done. One all-rounder like Fahim or Abbas can also bowl a bit and then they need one fast bowler.
Get maybe two to three people from Shaheens and then realign the roles and we are good to go. Next world cup, however, is in South Africa so we need to have some pace bowling options. Maybe then play two pace bowling (so called) all-rounders and drop one of Nawaz/Saim pair and Tariq/Ibrar pair each.
