In 1st ODI against Australia, Hafeez (the senior most pro in the side) made a comeback after a long time and was given responsibility to bat at No. 3 irrespective of the fact that the younger player he replaced had made 3 centuries and one 90 in last 4 consecutive innings played as No. 3.

But this has not been the ONLY instance. Name any senior player from Hafeez to Malik, Akmal brothers to Younis Khan etc... ALL of them have said multiple times in public that they WANT to bat higher up the order only. And if some of them are put at No. 5/6 (e.g. Malik / Akmal Jr.) they keep on complaining that they are unable to perform because they are not playing at their natural position. I have never heard a senior batsman say that he is willing to bat down the order to take more responsibility (especially in chasing scenarios).

Today I was reading an interview of Dhoni where he said that "I would've preferred batting at four and playing more overs, but felt it was more important to see if somebody else can bat at four and if I can bat at five, and that gives more power to our batting line-up. http://www.espncricinfo.com/india/content/story/1077352.html. And to his credit he was there in many successful chases for India as captain. Before Kohli's brilliance it was always Dhoni who batted with lower order to win matches for his country.

Atleast I don't remember a single senior Pakistani batsmen of current era who has said that he wants to bat lower down the order to make the lower order stronger. It's always the case nowadays that whenever top order fails, the middle order comprises of youngsters - for whom the target becomes out of reach. And in my view, this is not a new problem, but decades old problem in Pakistan cricket. Imran Khan said that top four should be the best batsmen. The current seniors interpret Imran's statement as top four should be most senior batsmen.

Will there be a day when a senior batsman from Pakistan wants to sacrifice easy runs at the top of order and take the challange of batting down the order? Or is it oo much to ask from our beloved seniors?

Shoiab Malik and Shahid Afridi

Malik??? In EVERY interview that Malik has given in recent years he said that he wants to bat in the top order (and called batting in lower order as reason of his non-performance).

Afridi??? Senior (YES) Batsman (NO)

I find it soo annoying when guys want openers to bat at lower order

Shahid Khan Boom Boom Afridi. The guy had 6 hundred as an opener and yet he unselfishly moved down for teams best interest :msd

Inzimam is the one who remain adamant to play in the middle order. He always want to bat at 5 or 6 to play the role of a finisher in the side. Another name comes to my mind in Abdul Razzak who even coptained some matches but prefer to come at no.7 or 8

Afridi and Razzaq have both complained about playing too low down the order.

Dhoni moved down the order to bat responsibly, Afridi moved down the order to bat freely :)

May be I should have bolded the word responsibility in the OP

Modern day (limited overs cricket) demands versatile batsmen i.e. who can play anywhere in the order. In Test cricket, specialist openers are definitely required especially in conditions like England, Aus, SA etc. Limited overs cricket these days is played on flat tracks where batsmen take liberties against bowlers even in early overs - as they can trust the bounce.

Sorry to say, but this is exactly the reason why we are falling behind other nations in limited overs cricket. Specialist positions are 90's cricket. Just see a recent interview of Rohir Sharma where he credits Dhoni for promoting him to opening. If it was Pakistan, he would have remained a lower order batsman because "opening" is a specialist's job..

You're asking 'Name a single senior Pakistani batsman who has ever shown willingness to bat down the order?', so I answered, you got answer, problem solved :afridi

^^

And to add to my above answer:

Same goes for the other way around i.e. demanding an opening batsman to bat lower down the order!!

Simply put, if a modern ODI top order batsman cannot play in lower order, than it points to single thing i.e. he is not a good stroke maker and he will struggle big time in lower order. Such a batsman does not deserve to be in the playing XI at all

But still one thing is missing in Afridi's resume i.e. being a batsman. He was senior alright(the senior most ever), but in his own words he was a bowler who could bat...

yes but hafeez is not an opener... if mathews swings the ball hafeez will be gone edging it to the keeper or first slip...saw him today edging it to the slip cordon at faulkner's pace... he is a tailender who can bat a bit soo he need to be pushed to no.6 or 7...i find it so annoying when guys back hafeez (steyn's bunny) to open the inns...

Funnily enough Inzamam is the opposite. He should've batted at 3 but he often batted at 5 which was plain stupid

Inzi and moyo liked being down the order when they should have batted higher.
