The Prime Minister spoke to U.S. President Donald Trump over phone, according to a PMO statement.
Encouraging anti-India violence will not ensure regional peace, Prime Minister Narendra Modi told U.S. President Donald Trump in a telephone conversation on Monday. The conversation is the first direct communication between the two leaders since India ended Jammu and Kashmir’s special status on August 5.
“In the context of the regional situation, the Prime Minister stated that extreme rhetoric and incitement to anti-India violence by certain leaders in the region was not conducive to peace,” the Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement on the conversation, without referring to Pakistan. “The two leaders recounted the June meeting in Japan’s Osaka where they participated in the G20 summit.
“He [the Prime Minister] highlighted the importance of creating an environment free from terror and violence and eschewing cross-border terrorism without exception,” the MEA said, summing up Mr. Modi’s message during the 30-minute conversation.
The conversation came days before the G7 summit in Biarritz, France, where both Mr. Trump and Mr. Modi are scheduled to be present.
Officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, indicated that Mr. Modi has several bilateral meetings lined up, without confirming if a Trump-Modi meeting is on the agenda.
In July, Mr. Trump had claimed — during Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan’s visit to the U.S. — that Mr. Modi had urged him to mediate in the India-Pakistan crisis that flared up after the February 14 Pulwama attack. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar had subsequently stated that no such request was made by Mr. Modi to the American leader.
In Monday’s telephone conversation, both leaders also discussed the Afghan scenario with the Prime Minister expressing India’s “long-standing and unwavering commitment to work for a united, secure, democratic and truly independent Afghanistan”.
