Leicestershire CCC is excited to announce the signing of Pakistan international Naseem Shah on a short-term deal for the start of the Vitality Blast.

The right-arm quick will act as cover for Naveen-ul-Haq, who remains in India following Lucknow Super Giants’ progression to the IPL playoffs.

Naseem, who is capable of regularly bowling in excess of 90mph, is due to land in the UK on Tuesday evening and will link up with his new teammates ahead of Thursday’s T20 opener away at Lancashire.

The 20-year-old has taken 191 career wickets to date, including 73 in T20 cricket at an average of 29.75 – conceding at under eight runs per over.

A precocious talent, Naseem made his maiden first-class appearance aged 15, before making his Pakistan debut in Brisbane as a 16-year-old in 2019 – claiming 80 wickets on the international stage.

He has gone on to become an integral part of Pakistan’s white-ball squads too. After making his ODI and T20I debuts last August, Naseem has featured on 27 occasions for his country, including being an ever-present as Pakistan finished runners-up in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup.

Naseem has prior experience in the Vitality Blast, taking five wickets at 20 for Gloucestershire during his spell in Bristol last summer. He was also due to link up with Welsh Fire for The Hundred that year but pulled out following selection for Pakistan’s ODI series against Netherlands and the Asia Cup.

Upon signing for the Club, the Pakistan star said: “I’m very excited to be joining the Foxes for the start of the Vitality Blast. I can’t wait to meet my teammates and help win games for Leicestershire.”

Director of Cricket, Claude Henderson, added: “Having Naveen in the IPL playoffs meant we had to make a quick call and we are extremely excited to have secured someone of Naseem’s calibre.

“He’s proven to be a world-class performer in T20 cricket, and we look forward to seeing him in a Leicestershire shirt shortly.”

Naseem will become the latest Pakistan international to represent the Foxes, joining the likes of Mohammad Abbas, Shahid Afridi, Abdul Razzaq and Umar Akmal.

Expecting him to take a truckload of wickets as long as he stays fit!

Only here for a few matches and then the LPL.

I always worry about injuries and this lad.

Every other thread seems to be about Naseem Shah joining some outfit or other around the world.

And that's the danger.

I get, make as much money as you can while you are playing. But there is the danger of injuries and burnout amongst our players, especially the likes of Naseem who has been plagued by injuries already in his short career.

Its just pathetic. They earn enough by playing for Pak/PSL. Also I understand playing in the UK, But to play every single T20 leauge in the world?

There is a 50 over WC coming but these guys have 0 clue, also PCB is sleeping like always.

Very likely to make his 2023 Vitality Blast debut tonight:

Pakistan quick Naseem Shah comes straight into contention, with Naveen still in IPL action.

No wickets for Naseem yet, 0/26 in 3 overs - Scored 4 when he batted.

Leicestershire thrashed by 8 wickets by Lancashire - pretty dismal start for Naseem and his side.

Our cricketers will join even the Somalia T20 league if they've enough days freed up in their diary.

I wonder if Kim Jong Un is interested in setting up a franchise.

And PcB is on path to collide with BCCI where many of our cricketers are not letting a 3rd choice opportunity in any Mickley mouse contest, What if BCCI gives an indirect order to other boards not to pick Pakistani players :13:

This is a valid point.

Our players are desperate to play in any mickey mouse league as despite the increase in wages, their salaries are nowhere near the top earners of world cricket.

Head Coach Paul Nixon:

Naseem Shah looked sharp and well with the new ball, made their guys jump around a bit playing and missed quite a few times. Thick outside edges that flew for four. So pleased that he's fit and raring to go and looks really confident and positive.

Naseem so far 0/25 in 3 overs vs Birmingham Bears

His only contribution so far

They earn more then enough. For Pak standars the salary for the top pak players is lot of money. Add PSL and other commercial work etc to it. Its pure greed and a lack of vision.

Mixed bag of 3 matches.

Up and down with his form during the stint.

Not at his best.

Just hope he hasn't picked up another niggle - because wickets wise not much to talk about.

Brought in at short notice and produces an excellent performance 1/20 in 4 overs

I believe he's due to play 1 more match for Leicestershire as cover for injury.

Doing well so far although no wickets

Has bowled 2 overs for 11 runs so far vs Durham

Brilliance from Naseem!

So that's his stint at Leicestershire over unless he's required to cover for injuries.

4 wickets in 5 matches but an excellent economy rate of 7.36.

For the moment odi is naseems best format where his old ball skills come into play in the second half of the inning. He’s decent in tests but still needs to mix in more of the short pitched stuff to be consistently effective.

T20 is his weakest format. He can keep the runs down but doesn’t move the new ball enough to pick up the early wickets and we have better bowlers to close out.

Ihsanullah should be ahead of him for t20 purposes
