Naseem Shah withdrawn from Pakistan U19 squad

The Pakistan Cricket Board has withdrawn fast-bowler Naseem Shah from next month’s ICC U19 Cricket World Cup to be played in South Africa from 17 January to 9 February.

The National Junior Selector Committee, which is headed by Saleem Jaffar, has named Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Mohammad Wasim Jnr as Naseem’s replacement.

Wasim Jnr took three wickets each in the ACC Asia Cup and on the tour of South Africa, while he bagged seven wickets on the tour of Sri Lanka. On the domestic circuit, he played one U19 one-day match in which he bagged three wickets, while he snapped up seven wickets in three U19 three-day matches.

PCB Chief Executive Wasim Khan said: “The ICC U19 Cricket World Cup is a stepping stone for future stars and a platform for budding youngsters to graduate to international cricket. Naseem has recently broken that glass ceiling and has established his credentials as an international cricketer.

“As such, the PCB has taken a pragmatic approach and decided to withdraw him from next year’s competition to provide this opportunity to another promising cricketer so that he can show his mettle and potential at a global stage.

“This should not deter Pakistan’s chances at next year’s ICC U19 Cricket World Cup as the selectors have picked a side that is experienced and bubbling with confidence to perform strongly.

“Naseem will now remain in Pakistan and continue to work on his skills under the watchful eyes of bowling coach Waqar Younis. Furthermore, he will remain available for the home series against Bangladesh.”

The 2004 and 2006 champions and three-time runners-up, are placed in Group C of the 16-team event and will play Scotland in their opening match on 19 January in Potchefstroom.

Pakistan’s second match will be against Zimbabwe at the Witrand Oval on Wednesday, 22 January, while their third and final group match will be on 24 January at the JP Marks Oval against Bangladesh in Potchefstroom.

The top two teams from each of the four groups will advance to the Super League, while the remaining teams will feature in the Plate Championship. The Super League stage will commence from Tuesday, 28 January and the top four sides will qualify for the semi-finals, with the winners competing for the title on Sunday, 9 February, in Potchefstroom.

Meanwhile, the Pakistan U19 cricket team’s preparation camp will commence at the National Cricket Academy from Wednesday, 1 January 2020. The team will depart for Johannesburg on 10 January.

What Wasim Khan said is what I and others have said on many occasions and the wording is pretty much from the forum. It was a no brainer. Let's see if we have others that can shine, a SF would be a good result.

Sanity prevailed, finally. A post graduate student will not be sent back to middle school.

I cannot believe this was even an issue. The whole point of u-19 cricket is to prepare players for the national team, not to compete with the national team.

Except Waqar Younis won’t even be in Pakistan - won’t he be back home in Sydney?

God to see Mohammad wasim jr selected. 150 kph right arm fast bowler and a big hitter down the order. He is a pathan guy. Very strong and bulky.

Heart breaking news for me , I was only interested in watching the U19 worldcup because of him obliterating young Indian batters ,Lets hope M.Amir Khan can do that.

Yeah same here, now you we don’t know and you can continue with the hype without knowing the answer.

LAHORE: The Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) late decision to drop teenage pacer Nasim Shah from the Pakistan Junior team, which is set to participate in the Junior World Cup in South Africa later this month, is most likely for the reason to avoid further controversy over his age in the international media, well informed sources told Dawn.

Though Nasim had been selected in the U-19 World Cup squad, he was later drafted into the senior team which toured Australia in Nov-Dec 2019 for the two-Test series and hogged the limelight as a rookie fast bowler. When the Junior team was in the final stages of preparing for the World Cup, the PCB suddenly announced that the bowler would not be part of the squad for the mega event as head coach Misbah-ul-Haq and bowling coach Waqar Younis had other plans worked out for him.

On the tour of Australia, some questions over Nasim’s age were raised in the international media but the PCB categorically denied all such reports and said that it totally relies on NADRA’s record and there is no reason to doubt the young pacer’s age. However, some ex-players from Australia, Pakistan and even India still expressed their doubts.

On Monday, reliable sources told Dawn that despite defending the age of Nasim quite stoutly, the PCB did initiate an investigation at its own level after the tour of Australia to set the record straight on the bowler’s age. Sources said that PCB’s doctors in their reports could not ascertain Nasim’s exact date of birth because they are of the view that no reliable scientific way is available to determine that while no international sporting bodies recognizes bone test as the authentic parameter to decide any player’s age.

PCB really need to get their act together on this issue.

PCB statement on Naseem Shah

Lahore, 7 January 2020:

The Pakistan Cricket Board rejects the impression in a section of the media which suggests that fast-bowler Naseem Shah had been withdrawn from the Pakistan U19 squad for this month’s ICC U19 Cricket World Cup due to concerns over his actual age.

The PCB, as part of its standard operating procedures, had rechecked and verified ages of all potential members of the Pakistan U19 side in November before selecting the squad on 6 December 2019 subsequent to which Naseem was named in the side after he met the ICC age eligibility criteria for the tournament, which was set at 1 September 2000.

The PCB, as stated in its announcement on 31 December, had clarified that Naseem had been withdrawn from the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup on the request of the Pakistan men’s senior team management purely on cricketing reasons.

In this background, the PCB is disappointed that an attempt has been made to tarnish the credibility and reputation of an emerging fast-bowler with a bright future ahead.

Why even issue a correction. Why make a big deal about it.

Better to try and sort out how old he actually is.

And look at what age it says in the Talent Spotter.
