Nasir Durrani resigns as head of Punjab Police Reforms Commission

LAHORE: Former Khyber Pakhtunkhwa IGP Nasir Khan Durrani has resigned as head of Punjab Committee on Police Reforms and Implementation.

The resignation comes hours after Punjab government transferred Punjab police chief Muhammad Tahir and replaced him with Amjad Saleemi.

The transfer was, however, suspended by the Election Commission of Pakistan, calling it a violation of code of conduct ahead of by-elections.

According to sources, Nasir Khan Durrani, who was appointed chairman of the powerful commission last month, wasn’t happy with the transfer of IGP Muhammad Tahir.

“Nasir Durrani has resigned from the post citing health reasons,” sources told Geo.

The commission was formed to rid Punjab police of political interference, grant autonomy to the Central Police Office and introduce various other reforms.

The notification of the commission issued in September reads: “In pursuant to the prime minister’s vision for police reforms, for devising and recommending ways and means to provide a police force that is politically neutral, operationally autonomous, accountable and oriented towards professionalism, specialised improved service delivery and enhanced community engagement, in line with the international best practice, the Punjab government is pleased to constitute the ‘Commission on Police Reforms and Implementation’.”

Removing IG Punjab without any proper reason will cause harm . Sindh goverment tried to remove ad Khwaja but court intervened to stop that from happening.

Nasir Durrani resgined because of it and I'm afraid this will go to court like Khawaja case

Tahir is an upright and honest officer so they have to prove these two reasons in court.

I dont know about the new guy. I just know that Durrani is a good guy and he was told to fix the police system in Punjab and there will be no political interference and yet the old IG was replaced with new IG without taking Durrani into confidence. This is not good.

Its the PTI govt that will succeed or fail on its performance so i dont see a problem. If they appointed a guy to hide power abuse or corruption like the Sharifs and AZ do, then i am with you.

Wasnt he involved in Model Town? That should be enough for him to be removed.

I think PAT had reservations over him and that is why he was removed by PTI government. Allegation on him is that he did not took requisite action against those involved in model town massacre.

He isn't involved directly I think. The reason being given for his removal is that he was not taking proper action against those involved despite clear instructions from the government.

These are mere teething problems. They have not settled in properly yet. Durrani can resign and I'm dissapointed he has. But the decision to remove the IG punjab was the right decision. These dheet patwari supporters will not go quietly they must be dealt with firmly.

Yeah they are only supposed to follow orders when it relates to open fire on unarmed civilians like happened in Model Town.

I am not sure as to why Mr.Saleemi was fired. Let the news emerge.


But yes, if he was fired for not arresting Hamza Shehbaz than clearly there was a high court ruling and if he went against it than He would have been served contempt of court notice.

If he was instrumental, than when he was made head of Punjab police Reforms, why did you remove and posted an IG without his input or taking him in consideration?

This guy could had reformed our police, but out PMs interference just to help his own political party or take action against certain political parties, ruined the reforms process aswell.

Really sad about the passing away of thsi guy
