Tournament taking place in Karachi and Hyderabad, and features departmental teams only.

KARACHI: The country’s top eight departmental sides are set to vie it out for the 50-over National One Day Cup for departments that is set to begin in Karachi and Islamabad from Saturday.

The eight sides — HBL, WAPDA, SNGPL, SSGC, KRL, NBP, UBL and PIA — will play seven group games apiece, before the top two teams clash in the final.

The tournament is currently being shared by Islamabad and NBP after the final was washed out due to rain without a ball being bowled.

This time around, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has divided the tournament into two parts — the first will be played between the departments while the second will be played between the regional sides.

Joint-winners NBP, currently led by Qaiser Abbas, are confident of going the distance once again, especially with Nasir Jamshed set to make a return. “We are confident of defending the title,” said Abbas. “Jamshed might return and join the team, which will give out batting a boost while our bowlers are also ready to tackle the challenges ahhead,” he said.

Meanwhile, KRL’s Sadaf Hussain — who was the top wicket-taker last time around — is rearing to go once more, especially considering his poor run in the recently concluded Quaid-e-Azam Trophy, where . “I wasn’t able to get a lot of wickets in the longest format but I will be trying to top the charts once more in the one-day games.”

HBL vs WAPDA: 55(92) for Salman Butt, very slow. WAPDA lasted 49.5 overs but managed only 161. Ahmed Shahzad probably felt that he is doing no good to his chances by opening with Fakhar Zaman so he demoted Fakhar and opened himself, only to score 11 runs from 45 deliveries. Fakhar also failed though. Imam, however, carried HBL. Imam-ul-Haq and Ahmed Shehzad, however, form a very unidimensional pair. Fakhar has to open for them to have any chance. No game for Asif, probably resting. Junaid wicketless on return. Fahim Ashraf with good figures of 2/30 in 10 overs.

KRL vs NBP: Good start for Sadaf, not for his team though. 3/41, all wickets of top order batsmen. Game however belonged to Kamran Ghulam. 61 with the bat and 5/30 with the ball. I'd have him over Nawaz anyday in the limited over setup because of his ability to strike the ball.

SNGPL vs PIA: Good start for SNGPL, who bowed out in super 8 stage of QA trophy after winning the event last four times. 73(89) for Imran Butt who had a poor first class season. Hafeez got 58 but 1/49 with the ball. Would be interesting to see how he fares up in remaining games to get an assessment of him with his remodelled action.

SSGC vs UBL: 103(98) for Asif Zakir, his 8th 100 in 61 List A games and he now averages 46. 94(78) for skipper Malik too. A bizarre knock of 103(137) from Shan Masood while chasing 337. Couple of wickets for Zafar Gohar.
