Pakistan’s best shortest format players assemble for National T20

• With the ICC T20 World Cup round the corner, the event provides an excellent opportunity to spectators to watch live in action their favourite cricketers

Lahore, 20 September 2021:

It will be Babar Azam versus Shaheen Shah Afridi, Mohammad Rizwan versus Shadab Khan, Sharjeel Khan versus Naseem Shah, Fakhar Zaman versus Shahnawaz Dahani and Hasan Ali versus Imam-ul-Haq after the Pakistan Cricket Board announced the schedule and squads for the National T20 2021-22, which will be held from 23 September and 13 October.

The 18 Rawalpindi-leg matches, which were earlier planned for Multan, will now be played at the Pindi Cricket Stadium till 3 October, while Gaddafi Stadium will remain the venue of the remaining 15 matches that will commence on 6 October.

Both semi-finals will be played on 12 October with the first match to commence at 1500 and second match to begin at 1930. The first ball in the final will be bowled at 1930.

The National T20 is a fiercely-contested and highly entertaining tournament. It not only provides opportunities to cricketers to stake claims in the national side, but leading performers get a chance to be included in the HBL PSL Player Draft and then picked up by the franchises.

The event starting later this week has become even more important and critical as members of the Pakistan squad for next month’s ICC T20 World Cup will be in action. With each player to get, at least, 10 matches, they will aim to strike form and fitness that can help them be in their best shape when they arrive in the United Arab Emirates on 15 October.

PCB Chairman Ramiz Raja: “Following the postponement of the New Zealand series, the National T20 provides an opportunity to our elite cricketers to maintain their focus and composure, show the world that they have not been distracted by the events of last week and continue with their preparations for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.

“The participation of our finest cricketers in the National T20 will also enhance the reputation, value and significance of the tournament, while providing the next generation of cricketers a chance to rub shoulders with the national stars and learn the art of preparing and performing at the highest level.

“With your enthusiasm, wishes and backing, Pakistan cricket will continue to move forward. Pakistan Zindabad!”

Pakistan wicketkeeper Mohammad Rizwan will lead defending champions Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, runners-up Southern Punjab will be captained by hard-hitting top-order batter Sohaib Maqsood.

Babar Azam, Pakistan’s all-format captain and second ranked T20I batsman, will captain Central Punjab and Pakistan’s ODI opener Imam-ul-Haq will lead Balochistan. Sindh have kept faith in former captain Sarfaraz Ahmed, while Pakistan white-ball vice-captain Shadab Khan will be in-charge of Northern.

In the Balochistan’s squad, Mohammad Ibrahim Snr has replaced Awais Zia, who withdrew from the National T20.

Interesting to see teenage chinamen Faisal Akram who has impressed quite a few in national setup and is part of Pak U19 as well is part of SP’s squad.

Fantastic Squads, really like some of the selections.

With no NZ Series Punjab are the favourites to win any team with this batting would be favourites in any tournament

Babar
Ahmed
Kami
Hafeez
Malik
Umar Akmal
Hussain Talat
Faheem
Hassan Ali
Wahab
Qadir

I’d take these boys to WC, Umar is not in team but should be in.

Umar has failed miserably in the seconds tournament but i guess that was expected he has been out for so long

Not much new spinners then they ask for backup :facepalm , its criminal that Balochistan didn't retain Usama Mir or Shahzaib Ahmed from last years and neither does northern have any new leggie i have seen Northern from 3 years they never play any legspinner even after Shadab leaves maybe insecurity from Shadab.

An excellent chance for players to stake their claim for the t20 WC squad. M. Waseem hinted at changes and this is an excellent chance for a last minute audition.

Should be a good tournament apart from Balochistan all teams look strong

How Kashif Ali can’t get into any of these I just don’t know. Where’s Zafar Gohar?

Zafar is playing country cricket, not sure about his availability for the tournament. Also to be honest he didnt do much in whiteball cricket last season with the ball. Ahmed Safi is getting an opportunity in the tournament.

CP definitely and even SP looking possibly stronger than last season.

Some careful manipulation done here. Azam Khan is the only keeper in his side while Mohammad Akhlaq will probably had to sit out for Kamran Akmal due to seniority plus Kami being a domestic king. No competition for Azam. Most probably Nadeem Khan playing a hand here.

If we are to groom captains, then players who are regulars in the international team and have age on their side should be elevated to captaincy. Instead of Sohaib Maqsood, Hasan should have been leading the team.

Having all (3) of your regular spinners in the same team. So atleast one will have to miss out among Imad, Shadab and Nawaz unless Shadab plays as a batter(which I don't like seeing how he bats at the international level)

Plus Yasir and Kashif Bhatti in the same team when both have no future in international t20s and being on their last legs.

Saud Shakeel in t20s really don’t make any sense. Someone like Saad Khan could’ve easily been used for that slot. Disappointed with most squads here but Sindh is in its own league. Tired of watching the same guys for the last decade.

PCB should franchise this too. Players are playing for random teams anyway. And there is clearly market for T20 cricket in Pakistan.

There is Zeeshan Ashraf as VC in SP, so Azam is not the lone keeper in his team.

Agreed about grooming captains. Imam over Haris is a good move. Hassan was phenomenal in leading CP so could have been a good captain of SP but, there is certain independence given to regions and coaches. SP drafted in Naseem Shah from CP and they thought Sohaib can do the job. Personally I would have liked to see Hassan lead but, on the other hand CP needed a star bowler as well.

Regarding Northern I think all 3 spin bowling all rounders have played together previously as well if I am not wrong. As all 3 are all rounders Northern an easily go with 3 pacers, 3 spinners combo and still have pretty decent batting depth. However yes one can argue that one of them could have been moved to another region.

I think PCB is also trying to maximize local representation as well for all the regions this season so that restricts making too many moves.

While its a valid point of face value because Saad Khan has more shots and is more suited for T20s however, at the same time its a fact that Saud Shakeel is one of the best mid 20s all round batsman in Pakistan so investing in him to improve his shot range and overall stroke play isnt that bad a move as well.

I guess many fans are forgetting that these squads are announced but, promotions from 2nd XI and other changes are allowed just like last year’s National T20 cup. Last year there were many players which were brought into the main teams during the tournament from 2nd xi sides. Its a long tournament and I each team plays 10 matches so we will again see some shuffling.

Too mang international stars in CP, will effect players like Qasim Akram

CP

mubasir khan doing a decent job in second xi. northern desperate for young batting talent, esp given how hopelessly out of form haider ali is.

He certainly is doing a good job. Just noticed they have only used him in one or two matches for his bowling which i think is handy enough.

I dont think Wahab and Imad etc will be playing this maybe i am wrong

The captains of the six participating teams of the National T20 have urged fans in Rawalpindi and Lahore, to rally behind the tournament which showcases the best of Pakistan’s T20 talent. All 18 Pakistan players (including the three travelling reserves) part of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup touring party will be seen in action in the tournament that runs from 23 September to 13 October.

The first leg will run until 3 October at Rawalpindi’s Pindi Cricket Stadium, before the action moves to Gaddafi Stadium, Pakistan’s home of cricket, where the second leg will be staged from 6-13 October.

Nearly PKR9million prize money will be up for grabs in the National T20.PKR5million will be awarded to the winners while the runner-up will receive PKR2.5million.

PKR400,000 will be shared equally between the tournament’s top performers which include player of the tournament, best batsman of the tournament, best bowler of the tournament and best wicketkeeper of the tournament.

The best performer of every match will get PKR25,000 as the man-of-the-match award while the top performer of the tournament’s finale will be rewarded PKR35,000.

Meanwhile, all six squads are packed with quality T20 performers and form a great blend of youth and experience.

Balochistan will be led by Pakistan ODI batter Imam-ul-Haq, the southpaw will rely on the experience of batters like Haris Sohail, Akbar-ur-Rehman and the flair of Pakistan U19 opener Abdul Wahid Bangalzai. Balochistan also possess a quality bowling attack with the likes of Junaid Khan, Umaid Asif, Khurram Shehzad, Amad Butt, Akif Javed, Yasir Shah and Kashif Bhatti at Imam’s disposal.

Balochistan –Imam-ul-Haq: “This event is just like a mini-Pakistan Super League with the quality and competition on display. This tournament will be a wonderful preparation opportunity for the players who are in the T20 World Cup squad as all six teams will go all-out for glory.

“The Rawalpindi crowd is passionate about the game and they never let us down with their backing of players and quality cricket. I am sure they are disappointed due to New Zealand’s withdrawal from their tour, but I request them to turn-up as all six teams will try their best to entertain them with quality cricket in the Rawalpindi-leg.”

Pakistan’s all-format captain Babar Azam leads a star-studded Home City Central Punjab outfit that includes seasoned T20 campaigners like Ahmed Shehzad, Hussain Talat, Kamran Akmal, Mohammad Hafeez and Shoaib Malik who will form the batting fulcrum for the side along with Babar.

Babar who will be captaining Pakistan in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, also has an experienced and incredibly potent bowling attack under him in the shape of Ehsan Adil, Hasan Ali, Usman Qadir, Wahab Riaz and Waqas Maqsood. Pakistan U19 captain Qasim Akram and top-order batter Abdullah Shafique are the two youngsters who would be hoping to make a big impression in the tournament.

All-rounder Faheem Ashraf will lend balance to the side with his hard-hitting batting and seam bowling.

Home City Central Punjab –Babar Azam: “The quality of cricket is very high in the National T20 events, backed by the outstanding pitches at the Pindi Cricket Stadium, the Rawalpindi-leg should produce wonderful entertainment. For us, the event is a great opportunity for T20 World Cup preparations and I hope all players in the UAE-bound squad will give it their all in the event. We have a richly experienced side that is full of international stars, my aim would be to lead Central Punjab to the title and improve on our performances in the last two seasons.

“I want to request to the fans especially in Rawalpindi to turn up and make full use of the 25 per cent attendance, I know there is a real disappointment after the setback last weekend; this event provides us a real opportunity of proving to the world our passion for cricket. Fans should come and support all the six sides, we all are endeavouring to entertain them and the ones who will follow us through the TV and digital media coverage all around the world.”

The defending champions Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are led by Pakistan all-format wicketkeeper-batsman Mohammad Rizwan. Rizwan has a quality batting line-up in his ranks which will be led by him and Fakhar Zaman. Iftikhar Ahmed, Mussadiq Ahmed and Sahibzada Farhan provide further batting depth.

Budding wicketkeeper-batsman Mohammad Haris and all-rounder Mohammad Wasim will be the youngsters to watch out for in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa line-up. Pakistan’s pace bowling spearhead Shaheen Shah Afridi will lead the KP attack, Arshad Iqbal, Imran Khan Snr, Asif Afridi and Mohammad Imran Khan are the other bowlers Rizwan would be pinning his hopes on.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa –Mohammad Rizwan: “The tournament provides us a great opportunity to prove to the world that we are as safe as any cricketing destination, all the players are motivated to go a step extra this time around in the National T20. The Pindi crowd is a passionate crowd which supports cricket and has always come in its numbers to back our national events.

“All six teams are balanced, as defending champions our aim would be to defend our title. We have good quality all-rounders in our squad and that should help us as you do need capable back-up bowling options at times besides your main bowling attack.”

The Shadab Khan-led Northern is another potent squad in the tournament, the winners of the first edition of the revamped National T20 (2019), have a great mix of dynamic batters and bowlers who have the potential of totally dominating their opponents on their day. Shadab will have the services of big-hitting batters like Haider Ali, Asif Ali, Zeeshan Malik and Sohail Akhtar. All-rounders like the seasoned Imad Wasim and Mohammad Nawaz along with Shadab himself lend great balance to the team.

Northern also possess a fiery pace attack with Haris Rauf, Musa Khan, Salman Irshad and Zaman Khan capable of bowling over 140 kph consistently with the wily left-armer Sohail Tanvir set to spearhead the attack with his wealth of T20 experience. Imad, Nawaz and Shadab provide Northern, quality spin bowling options.

Northern –Shadab Khan: “The Pindi Cricket Stadium is my home ground and I started playing here as a kid. The crowd in Rawalpindi has always supported quality cricket and I know while the fans are a bit disappointed at the cancellation of the New Zealand series they would come to the venue to back our national event.

“We have a quality bowling attack as most of our bowlers are Pakistan regulars in white-ball formats. The tournament will surely help us in the preparations for the T20 World Cup, there would be great competition too as all six teams have good depth and quality players in their ranks. I am hopeful that we can repeat the 2019 performances and win the trophy once again.”

Sarfaraz Ahmed-led GFS Sindh have a solid batting line-up that can post big totals. The top-order of Khurram Manzoor, Sharjeel Khan, Ahsan Ali and Shan Masood (transferred from Southern Punjab) will provide the firepower with Danish Aziz likely to get the finisher’s task, a job he repeatedly performed successfully in the last edition of the tournament.

Sindh also possess a potent bowling attack which will be spearheaded by pacers Shahnawaz Dahani and Mohammad Hasnain with the left-armer Rumman Raees making a comeback after regaining full fitness, Rumman last appeared in the HBL Pakistan Super League 2020 for Islamabad United more than 18 months ago. Spinners Abrar Ahmed and Zahid Mahmood provide further variation and depth to the Sindh squad.

GFS Sindh – Sarfaraz Ahmed: “Our fans have always been our strength and while we are going through another tough phase at the moment, it is the fans who can lift us up, the fans need to support the team and the PCB and show the world how resilient we are. I request the fans to turn up at the venue and back the players as they will be given quality entertainment in this quality tournament.

“The tournament will also provide great practice and preparation opportunities to the T20 World Cup bound players. I am happy with the Sindh combination, the team played well last season and made it to the semi-finals, this year around we are aiming to go better and make it to the event final and lift the trophy.”

ATF Southern Punjab are led by Sohaib Maqsood, the hard-hitting top-order batter had an excellent run in the event last year and was one of the reasons of his side’s entry into the final. Sohaib who is part of the Pakistan ICC Men’s T20 World Cup squad has other attacking batting options in his squad, the left-hander Zeeshan Ashraf and the right-hander Azam Khan (transferred from Sindh) can also keep wickets besides hitting it big. The left-hander Khushdil Shah will be tasked to provide big runs at a high strike rate in the middle-order.

All-rounders Aamer Yamin, Imran Randhawa and Hassan Khan (transferred from Sindh) provide depth to the squad. Sohaib also has a potent bowling attack at his disposal with Naseem Shah (transferred from Central Punjab), Mohammad Ilyas and Dilbar Hussain spearheading the attack. Young spinner Umer Khan and Faisal Akram provide exciting left-arm-spin orthodox and unorthodox options.

ATF Southern Punjab –Sohaib Maqsood: “While there is real disappointment due to the recent developments, it is the fans who will lift us and provide the backing we need. The National T20 is a quality tournament that provides rich entertainment to the fans, I really hope that we will see the fans show their passion in Rawalpindi and Lahore.

“While all six teams are well-balanced, I am very excited about the Southern Punjab squad as their leader. We have prepared really well at the pre-season camp and while I was not part of the camp, I have nonetheless heard and observed a real commitment, hunger and focus amongst the players for the upcoming events starting with the National T20. Last year we played the final and this year we plan to go one step better and lift the trophy.”

if anyone of the batsmen in that line up fails, have mubasir ready as backup.

I cant see any broadcast for this apart from ptv sports. Is it been shown in the UK? surely it will be on youtube

Mubashir is a real talent and they have to find a place for him. Also the nonsense with Shadab batting at any place above 6 is a total rubbish

He is a real talent but nothern have many other talents shadab should be batting at 8

Pepsi has joined hands with the Pakistan Cricket Board as title partner of the National T20. The six-team tournament commenced at the Pindi Cricket Stadium, Rawalpindi today with the opening clash between Balochistan and Northern.

PCB and Pepsi have a long-standing, time-tested partnership which will flourish further with the National T20 title partnership.

The indomitable spirit of Pepsi and Pakistan cricket will be evidenced in this tournament which is in sync with Pepsi’s commitment towards promoting cricket in Pakistan.

Pepsi and PCB will bring an exhilarating experience to Pakistani fans at the stadium and those watching on TV/ live streaming.

Defending champions Khyber Pakhtunkhwa take on Home City Central Punjab in the second match of the day which begins at 7:30 PKT. Pakistan’s best shortest format players will be seen in action in the 33-match tournament.

The first 18 games will be played in Rawalpindi while the last 15 matches will be played at Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium, the home of Pakistan cricket.

Balochistans batting is looking very weak with Ayaz Tasawur at 5, he has a career strikerate of 97 and average under 20

Saud Shakeel or a Salman Ali Agha could be benefiting from playing for this team

https://arysports.tv/hafeez-suffers-food-poison-eating-local-hotels-food/

Veteran cricketer Mohammad Hafeez has been suffering from food poison for the last couple of days after eating a local hotel’s food where he is residing currently.

Hafeez, who is supposed to join Central Punjab (CP) for the ongoing National T20 Cup in Rawalpindi, complained to the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) of poor quality food at the hotel.

According to the sources close to Hafeez, the cricketer is critically suffering from food poisoning.

Remember, the experienced all-rounder is a part of Pakistan’s T20 World Cup squad.

And it gets worst for Hafeez:

Islamabad: Veteran Pakistan cricket Mohammad Hafeez has traveled back to Lahore after his health could not get stable due to food poison.

The 40-year-old Hafeez, who is supposed to join Central Punjab (CP) for the ongoing National T20 Cup in Rawalpindi, suffered from food poison after eating a local hotel’s food.

The star batsman remained ill in the hotel for three days. He returned to Lahore after consulting doctors. He will undergo blood test again today.

not counting babar and rizwan, not a single player has grabbed any authorative performance.... only positive is young spinner Faisal...

Commentators have confirmed that PCB has decided to open a transfer window from tomorrow. Anyone who has not played for his team in this season will be allowed to be transferred e.g Abdullah Shafiq, Musa Khan etc.

As when the squads were originally announced Pak national players availability was not there however, with them available quite a few other players are on the benches.

PCB decides to further strengthen National T20 squads by announcing the opening of a loan window for the teams participating in the National T20.

Players who have not yet played a match in the tournament can move to another squad in accordance with the loan window.

This option is only valid for National T20, with the coaches of all the teams to hold consultations tomorrow for the loan window.

Chief Selector National Cricket Mohammad Waseem and Director High Performance Nadeem Khan will also review the process.

Dr Nauman Niaz was criticizing the PCB for their HD coverage and for keeping Mike Haysman for the domestic tournament ie there is no point spending this kind of money if there is no ROI and if its not cost effective.

Just highlights the risk averse nature of the Pakistani society. No one thinks long term ie if we provide this kind of coverage for 2-3 years, you might successfully get more sponsorship as a result

Meanwhile, the tournament enters a two-day break from tomorrow. A transfer window would be opened tomorrow (Monday) through which the coaches of the six teams can swap players who have not yet made an appearance in the tournament. The coaches will make the transfers in a meeting on Monday. The transfer window process will be supervised by Director High Performance Nadeem Khan and Chief Selector Muhammad Wasim.

This move has been designed to ensure maximum participation of players especially the ones who have warmed the bench so far.

The main question about transfer window is that are 2nd XI players also available because there have been some brilliant Performances.

Credit to PCB who have tried their best to make this tournament worth watching. And I have to say it is.

Coverage has been fantastic, matches have been good, all the star players are playing and now the transfer window aspect should make the tournament even more fun.

The tournament might end up exposing some of the T20I squad players too, which could be a blessing in disguise.

Central Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa fined for maintaining slow over-rate

• Southern Punjab’s Azam Khan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Shaheen Shah Afridi charged for showing dissent

• Urdu version of the media release attached

Rawalpindi, 27 September 2021:

Central Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have been fined PKR 40,000 and PKR 25,000, respectively for maintaining a slow over-rate in the ongoing National T20.

Both teams were charged under Article 2.22 of the PCB Code of Conduct for Players and Players Support Personnel that deals with minimum over-rate offences.

Central Punjab captain Babar Azam pleaded guilty to the charge proposed by on-field umpires Ahmed Shahab and Aftab Gillani and accepted the sanction leveled by match referee Iqbal Sheikh.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa captain Mohammad Rizwan pleaded guilty to the charge proposed by on-field umpires Ahmed Shahab and Imran Jawed and accepted the sanction leveled by match referee Iqbal Sheikh.

In two separate incidents, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Shaheen Shah and Southern Punjab’s Azam Khan have been fined 40 per cent and 25 per cent of their match-fees, respectively for breaching the PCB Code of Conduct for Players and Players Support Personnel during their teams matches against Southern Punjab and Balochistan, respectively in the National T20 at Pindi Cricket Stadium.

Both players were found to have violated Article 2.8 of the PCB Code of Conduct (Level 1), which reads as: “Showing dissent at an Umpire’s decision during a Match.”

Central Punjab have opted for 22-year-old Sameen Gul, who has snared 27 T20 wickets at 29.48 runs apiece to provide the youngster an opportunity to display his skills and talent in front of the HD-broadcast cameras, which are beaming the National T20 action across the globe through traditional and new media.

The National T20 will resume on Wednesday after two-day gap with the top-ranked Sindh playing Balochistan and fourth-placed Northern taking on bottom-placed Southern Punjab.

There's zero doubt in my mind that Abdullah Shafiq will warm the bench in Balochistan as well. Watch Sohail Akhtar make it in the middle order while Abdullah serves drinks to Imam ul Haq.

Good to see leggies Moshin and Mir back in the reckoning. Raza Hassan could have been a decent option as well for some teams.

Hopefully KPK can give opportunities to Mohammad Haris at some stage.

If you ever wanted to know why PK cricket is in such a dreadful place look no further than the treatment of Abdullah Shafiq at CP. Two older codgers, that have failed for years taking the place of a young player

How did Musa Khan not get picked up by any team? Are 90mph pacers so common now that someone like him can be left for the wolves?

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Ramiz Raja is not happy with the standard of pitches being used in the National T20 Championship and also the composition of the six teams in the competition. (More Cricket News)

The PCB in an unusual move has allowed a two-day break in the championship so that the team coaches and selectors can sit down and use an open transfer window to exchange players.

A source in the board said that the new chairman had expressed his displeasure over the standard of pitches seen so far in the national event at the Rawalpindi Stadium.

“Ramiz has now given instructions that when the second leg of the competition is held at the Gaddafi stadium in Lahore the pitches should be more suited for the batsmen and big totals should be possible for the teams,” the source said.

For the PCB, the ongoing National T20 Championship has gained a lot of significance before the T20 World Cup after the New Zealand team abandoned its series in Pakistan and returned home while the English board also pulled out of a short series in October before the mega event in the UAE.

^ RR why not just tie the bowlers hands as well. If the batsmen stink at scoring its not the pitches, its the lack of skills. The uae pitches wont be any dif to the pindi pitch.

Players like Abdullah Shafiq, Usman Shinwari and Muhammad Haris get selected for Pakistan but can't get into domestic 11. Similarly players get in PSL like Usman Khan, Muhammad Imran, Aarish Ali Khan, Ahmed Daniyal, Dilbar Hussain can't get into domestic 11 its really unfortunate. Muhammad Imran not in 11 is biggest disappointment of all.

In a move to continue to bring fans closer to Pakistan’s top T20 stars, the Pakistan Cricket Board has doubled the seating capacity for the six matches to be played from 1-3 October at the Pindi Cricket Stadium. This decision has been taken following the approval from the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) and only fully-vaccinated individuals will be allowed to buy the tickets and gain access to the stadium.

So will any of these transferees actually get any games?

Saw this kid Nasir Nawaz batting today. And I was impressed by his quick reflexes and powerful swing.

The basics are built solid. Talent needs to be groomed.

Million times better than Azam Khan.

I just found out that only 2 players out of the whole Balochistan Team in this National t20 are actually born in a city/ town in Balochistan... (Bismillah Khan and one other player). It's annoying to see players playing for provinces they are not from, but to be honest a lot of the time, this has to be done out of necessity (I think).

But why are there so few Balochistan players?

Tension, excitement and thrill reaches its climax as the six Cricket Associations boasting country’s best T20 players lock horns in a dash to the semi-finals of the National T20 in the Lahore-leg matches, which begins on Wednesday and will be televised live on PTV Sports and live-streamed on the PCB YouTube Channel and Facebook page.

After 18 matches of the tournament, which commenced in Rawalpindi on 23 September and carries a total prize of over PKR9million, all the sides have played six matches each.

Sarfaraz Ahmed-led Sindh, Mohammad Rizwan-captained Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Babar Azam-led Central Punjab and Shadab Khan-captained Northern are locked at eight points apiece with four wins and two defeats. Imam-ul-Haq’s Balochistan have four points, while Aamer Yamin-led Southern Punjab are winless but still in with a chance to reach the knockout stage provided they win their last four matches convincingly and other results also go in their favour.

Action will begin on Wednesday afternoon at 1500 Pakistan time when Sindh and Central Punjab will go toe to toe. At 1930, Northern will square off against Balochistan.

The winner of Sindh-Central Punjab match will move to 10 points and put one step in the semi-finals, while Northern will prefer to follow in the footsteps of the earlier match’s winner though they are expected to face stiff resistance from Balochistan who will be keen to move to six points and remain close to the frontrunners.

Unsurprisingly, world’s No.2 ranked T20I batsman Babar Azam is the leading run-scorer after six matches. The Pakistan captain has scored 286 runs at an average of 71.5 with a strike-rate of 143. He is followed by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Sahibzada Farhan (220 runs, 36.66 avg., 133.33 strike-rate), Sharjeel Khan of Sindh (212, 35.33 avg., 148.25 strike-rate), Northern’s Haider Ali (208, 52 avg., 141.49 strike-rate), Mohammad Rizwan of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (193, 32.16 avg., 129.53 strike-rate) and Abdul Wahid Banglazai of Balochistan (184, 36.8 avg., 111.51 strike-rate).

Pakistan’s premier fast bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi leads the bowling chart with 12 wickets with an economy-rate of 8.58. Six bowlers are tied at nine wickets apiece, namely Wahab Riaz, Hasan Ali (both Central Punjab), Asif Afridi, Imran Khan (both Khyber Pakhtunkhwa), Shahnawaz Dahani (Sindh) and Haris Rauf (Northern), while Sindh’s Ruman Raees is the only bowler with eight wickets.

The six captains are excited and keenly looking forward to the remaining 12 round matches of the Lahore-leg, which will be followed by semi-finals on 12 October and the final on 13 October.

Aamer Yamin: “After the disappointment of the Rawalpindi-leg we enter the Lahore-leg knowing that we have nothing to lose anymore. At the same time, we remember well how we turned it all around last year after an equally poor start.”

Babar Azam: “This National T20 has been one of the most exciting T20 competitions I have ever been part of and I have no doubts that the quality and competitiveness of the tournament will get even better when we move to Lahore with all sides vying for semi-final berths.

“Central Punjab have not been able to make their fans happy in the last two editions, but we are eager to lift the trophy at our home ground this time.”

Mohammad Rizwan: “We have one simple game plan, which is to play cricket according to contemporary standards. It worked for us in the last season and playing attacking, positive and modern-day cricket will help us in retaining our title and entertaining the fans in Lahore.

“We have achieved some good results in Rawalpindi, but the job is half done and our team understands that. We need to remain focused in Lahore, because all teams will be using the change of venue as an opportunity to regather and fill in the loopholes.”

Imam-ul-Haq: “We may not have achieved the desired results in Rawalpindi, but we are optimistic about our chances in Lahore. Over the last few days, we have identified gaps in our game plan and we will be looking to fill them when we take the field on Wednesday.”

Sarfaraz Ahmed: “The Rawalpindi-leg brought us good results and have put us in a good position for a place in the semi-finals. We cannot afford to be complacent as we still have a long way to go.

“The pitches in Lahore should provide more scoring opportunities to the batters and need to ensure that we make full use of the conditions. While our top-order has been delivering for us as Sharjeel and Khurram are both contributing, we need a bit more from our middle and lower order.”

Shadab Khan: “The Rawalpindi-leg was hard fought as all six teams produced some good cricket. We have gathered eight points and are eyeing a semi-final spot now. We play fearless brand of cricket and it has worked well for us not only this year but in the last two editions too.”
